so right here I had to get my board straight the straightedge so I chose uses known straightedge as I had and clamped it to it and it turned out really good on that 10 decide which way I want to do these but don't straighten each one of the boards before he started right here I've been squaring up the ends because let I'm gonna put it into a mold and right here I had the most trouble to try to decide which way I want to orient the bores to give it the best look and I'm drawing out the parts I'm going to cut off and I take it over to my vice you start chiseling away all the loose woods there that I don't want to be there make sure I get a good bond this took me quite a while I'm just orienting everything to see which is the best matchup I decided finally to go that more cleaning of the wood I missed earlier you I had an old piece of cubicle workstation I guess it is desktop which is really flat I had to use these or put these on it which really worked out really good for me to have that to create this template or a mode if you will you I want to make really sure this is all square before I ever start because in the end when I get done everything comes out of the mold one of make sure it's all square not to mess with all that part later here I'm putting down some table X tape I could use duct tape or whatever you want to use but this is to keep the epoxy from sticking to the base or any that might bleed through keeping that from sticking to that surface there this works really well and I'm gonna go on line the spots where the mold is going to be in the center of the cutting boards I'm going to make sure I put some this tape on the the end pieces it's going to dam up I guess you the end of these cutting boards to the epoxy won't run past that end on the cutting boards on each one of them and again this just this tape works really well and here I'm going to apply some some general caulk getting any seams that might be there just in the event that epoxy can leak out and it generally can find any spot that's open but I want to make sure it's really good and sealed around this edge so I make sure I seal the cracks around the boards where they're attached to the surface of this laminate and I'm also going to caulk the very edge of the live edge to keep it from running out all over the rest of the bore so I won't have so much to deal with later and I press that down onto the table X to make sure I get a good seal I'm just double-checking to make sure I have everything still square I'm going to mix up the epoxy the epoxy that I'm using is a food friendly food safe epoxy it's a one-to-one ratio I'm gonna mix in the cure first and then the base mixing it for five minutes exactly not to exceed eight minutes but as you see I do time it with my watch and mix it a little bit then I add my pigment I'm doing two boards here and one it's gonna be a blue with some white pearl the other is going to be a purple these are my daughter-in-laws cutting boards and I asked them their favorite colors and so this is why I went with the blue and the purple try to give it a water wavy top look when I get done so satisfying to pour this stuff in here I'm adding the purple tent I didn't measure it I just I just guessed what I thought was gonna look good I'm adding some of the white pearl here the white pearl really gives it a luminescent type look I really like this color I have my son with me he's also an avid woodworker he has me alive but here I'm sealing the edges before I poured this is to keep down any air bubbles from coming out of those sides if you don't do this step when you pour it air bubbles will tend to come out from the edges and so we start the pour it's like watching a caramel candy bar get made and I apply heat to get any air bubbles out you don't want to apply too much heat here playing too much heat will cause it to go into a heat cycle causing it to crack and then here you see me put some playing with some designs and so forth he's keeping down these bulbs that come up every so often and once you get certain point these these bubbles are not gonna give any more problems if you don't think correctly I happen to get lucky on this one and things got turned it okay this is the first pour which is about a little over a quarter of an inch I don't want to pour it all at once and this is the this the the second board that I'm making oh yeah that's so cool because I'm mixing these up as you remember I'm doing both these at the same time here you can see where I forgot to seal my edges during the first pour so I thought well I better go ahead and seal the what I can so turns out it was okay but you want to seal those edges this is hickory wood that I got from a vendor here I'm if things dried and I've taken my mold apart it comes apart really really well and I'm beating this thing here I broke a screw in that part and I'm beating this thing like crazy to get it apart but it was a screw hung up in there but I get it all apart it comes up amazingly worked like a dream no no Rita go clean this part give me a fit my planer is just about shot but anyway I'm just gonna plant it down until I get it flat the bottom is already flat I planed those earlier and I can tell you plainer knives do not like epoxy I said why don't haven't changed my belt on this machine it paid a mess this epoxy did I do plan to get some dust collection in my shop I just don't have it right now so that's just the way it is but it planed out really good it may probably this epoxy as it gets on your rollers and don't want to pull your wood through as well he's kind of happen along I could use the sled but it wasn't a snipe wasn't a big problem here now listen to blame the second board that died Hickory is also very hard it really wreaks havoc on your saw blades and your planted in hives in your jointer knives but I want to something really durable for these cutting boards I was really excited about giving these to my daughter-in-laws they're great and I'm sending it down to I started to well I started 120 go to 240 I go to 320 then I go up to a thousand and I finally hit it with a 2,000 get my son this check make sure he feels as smooth as I do this is very this is the this is the payoff right here this is the fun when all projects really you get the reward off anything is that you get that moment that wild factory and you'll see it a little bit when I put the finish on it that you get that but I'm making sure I have it send it now really really well as I say that I can just really see the grain start to really pop on this thing and in the epoxies world I thought man this is going to look sweet and you can see the color the woods difference dark it's it's light it looks like almost like the saw marks there but that's actually the color the wood around the live edge I'm just changing grits and here fisting apply the finish I using miss butcher-block conditioner and man look at that Wow it was just so cool it was just fo so much fun to do these right here they turned out so much better than I even thought they would I plan to go back later put a juice groove in these things and some feet as well but I want to get these to them for Christmas as this is why I was not able to get everything on this is like 10 o'clock at night the day before we I was able to give these to my daughter-in-laws but look at this okay this is just amazingly smooth it turned out so good
