CU20W: Final

final of the 2018 CONCACAF women's under-20 championship between the USA and of Mexico there were eight teams at the start of this competition and now they are just down to the final two with Haiti qualifying for the World Cup USA and Mexico already true it is time to decide which team will be called champions of CONCACAF for 2018 video rainfall alongside cherry Fedak here and here's the road to the final the USA defeating Haiti in the first semi-final on kicks from the penalty mark a 1 all draw their Mexico also tying one all would Canada and defeating Canada in the penalty shootout for three that's how they got here for this one confirmation of the results Haiti not doing themselves any justice in the penalty shootout losing 3 nothing missing all for penalties and Canada and Mexico coming down to some crucial misses in the end that happened on Friday lost the respective national flags making their way out onto the rainy turf we haven't had rain for the competition there the elements have intervened on the mornings and after the matches and night but none for any of the games except for the third-place playoff and for this one still the temperature is 28 degrees Celsius and there's a brain as you can see well I don't think it's 69 percent humidity anymore it should be like a hundred percent now 18 18 miles per hour the winds certainly this is gonna play a factor Kerry fennec that was before weekly international here parents absolutely it's coming down very hard have we've had that for the last 35 40 minutes now that certainly the ball will come on the surface very quickly and it's about getting you touch organized defenders being efficient and forwards expecting the unexpected chances will happen players will make mistakes on this surface and it seemed crowd as a vowel and Martinez in front of this fast crowd here at the atopalm Stadium in Kufa there should be another fantastic show Jerry yeah I was very very impressed with this Mexican side against Canada they changed their game plan there were very high pressing USA making five changes for this game Sanchez Moore's McKeon via quarter and Davidson out and in Girma Rodriguez Torres Pinto and Torino Rodriguez a little bit surprising that Davidson is out yeah thought Davison was magnificent in the last game terrific stuff this will be a very interesting contest Vidia whether mexico revert of what we've seen in the earlier games are whether they'll still try this very powerful very aggressive style of play which they overcame Canada with I thought was a feature of their play and as you've said already Kathy Martinez was outstanding Jacqueline or Val Andrea Hernandez with her three standouts for me they were brilliant all over the field Espinosa doesn't stop working but they're up against the top class USA side that have been in these positions before and they win no change for the Mexicans however despite the injury to well foul in the last game got a nasty head injury there was blood everywhere although for the fingers and on the side of her head she came off and it was a bit surprising that she's on today but I think given the spirit that we've seen from her during the tournament Terry wild horses couldn't drag her off yeah absolutely she's being a bundle of energy got great skills very powerful great left foot moves the ball manipulates the ball very well get her crosses in and gets it a gong scoring positions do us a kicking off in the USA is Sophia Smith and Smith we've seen his and be absolutely brilliant and then both periods of the game when she just drifts out of the out of the guilt but probably one of the best performance performers of the tournament in number eighteen how been outstanding des Miller of course covered every blade of the final getting the honor of carrying the whistle for this one she has been involved in two previous games in Sydney getting the call for this one and here we go the grand final of the 2018 CONCACAF Women's under-20 championship and it is the USA attacking the goal - all right Mexico in the more familiar green and white outfits yeah very competent Mexican side technically very gifted all of these young ladies they're very comfortable with the ball my worries early on in the competition was whether they could stand up to the physical contact of USA in Canada they certainly done it against Canada they were brilliant they won every 50 50 they changed their game up will they do it again today against USA who actually about a struggle up against Haiti should go kick or click over there was in charge of the Czech Republic under-19 team at one point she was also a former Czech national player also took charge of the New Zealand and USA under-19 teams until it was changed over to under-20 and has been in charge of the u.s. for some time now standing coach and taking the team to the finals once again in fact this is the the USA in the 8th consecutive final in this competition Christopher Cuellar son of the famous Mexican player Leonardo kweli are famous during the 1970s plays afro played several times in Mexico standout clashes for me will be held for USA and Kathy Martinez Pickett and or Val on this side big big responsibility on all of these players who will all become the next Hernandez in the middle of the park and Ria's have been excellent how will they please pass there to coolin de Melo has been outstanding for the USA both teams of course coming into this game after spirited draws in the semi-final and winning on penalty shootouts yeah the trusting penalty shootouts you have to say it was a lot easier for the u.s. Haiti just capitulated in the penalty shootout losing missing all four of their shots yes but for Kathy Martinez and the Mexican team it was a lot different against idiot what's been a feature for me in these games and particularly from these two sides is their organization both teams of structurally sound good players in every position but not just that they are technically aware the distances between center forward and center back are always around 35 30 to 35 yards keeping it nice and compact and tight as we say this will be a good competition [Applause] USA on the attack on the left side you're gonna score there from Alvarado well we've seen a joint in the attack at times I mean she is the midfield general there for the US but she's capable of getting forward I'm scoring such as a that's great stuff from Mexico maybe much easier and themselves both of these sides nor they've already qualified it's now about who's gonna be the boss who's gonna take away the trophy I'll send by Ria's two players in there from Mexico that's pintle who came on as a substitute in the semi-final and is recalled for this one this was done for Sofia's mr. chase manages to keep it in two players in sorted out nicely by the midfield enforcer for the USA eight wins one draw for the USA against Mexico Mexico never beating the USA in this competition and not scoring them 27 goals to 4 but significant they Kathy Martinez and one of those four goals in the last game here she is on call Oh got in there Kathy Martinez good save by the keeper again great stuff from Mexico they've upped their game yet again there's the ball inside can't just get their first we can't quite get enough on the ball big smile on her face she knows it was a good chance there's another unsung hero Hernandez number six in midfield for Mexico Mexican supporters have come out in their numbers here call keeper that's the second time now over our door Chantal the draw of Canada on the near side of the field USA with the throw in yes sir picket which made us maybe the smallest play on the field but she's very very fast indeed strong in the tackle de Melo Vaughn Eddie down there by Ria's present there's a sprinkling of Mexican art USA fans that have made the journey down here to Trinidad Tobago to watch this game they've not been disappointed their standard of football has been absolutely fantastic these girls have knocked the ball around like you wouldn't believe girls have come thick and fast they're taught we have a chopped finals vidiian Lopez takes it down ball tries to return the past but it goes straight to howl with those back bosses just to give the USA some more breathing room Kuhlman heads that onto the metal D'Mello with the chance to shoot well she got it into what Sophia Smith but science here for Mexico Ria's has been involved in everything in that center etc position good pass here Coleman can she get the shot off she does Oh chance China said oh what a block that was at the far side Garcia again was there what a chance for the u.s. to go one up there but brilliant defending Garcia and Soto getting involved great for pies was the deflection there was a shot well that came off sort of shorter one what a block that was timely intervention by Soto that could have been the opening goal for the USA in the 12th minute great stop he would have been for the USA here's the touch let's try to knock it in the space to his Kuhlman it look like ya Joe just got too much on it Briana Pinto the n-th top hat player so I mentioned the record between these two countries it means that seems that the past records mean absolutely nothing in this competition not so Haiti have come in with a record of never scoring against the USA they scored they never scored against Canada they scored today and wonder game going true to the World Cup so late chuckle that was thereby help it's gonna be a foul and an apology towards rare something that we've seen already in this game video is Mexico trying to play at the back Alvarado was not good on the ball as we just see that challenge coming in late and they're trying to overplay sometimes Mexico they could be caught wanting Alvarado neighbors have played twice in the 2010 tournament doing so again today USA winning the first encounter who will win the second one that's the important one in this competition by Kuhlman de Melo well competition for Mexico very skillful energetic just really clear player for Mexico short corner again this one she touched it back to her lights not a flag up for offside yeah but there was a player on the line for Mexico correct - that's what the USA players were pointing out there we go again two players on the porch so can't beat that's right I think the trees there prof Lee er - if you're one if you level your oxide USA got calls from Abigail Kim and Ashley Sanchez in the last game against Mexico they also out shot the Mexicans 16 to 4 but Mexico got a call back from Kathy Martinez and that made things a bit different to the last one Martinez still yet to make her presence felt in this game yeah I think with the heavy downpour that we had earlier video it's been difficult for these kids getting a foothold in the game balls coming off the surface or faster Footwear I'm sure would have out to be adjusted before they came out Isabelle Rodriguez she and namesake Karina Rodriguez artifact for the USA give him the way cuz Aras you got tournament scene for Hernandez in the center she spins the pass don't see enough to go all the way back sort of surface it's treacherous for defense to negotiate Hernandez Hernandez again in action cool custom in the middle of the pot for Mexico yeah she's been an excellent performer in this competition bit worried with Alvarado out the back their goalkeeper from Mexico forward to as Martinez goodway's there was the goalkeeper kick down for the goalkeeper for the USA McGlinchey had been called into action already today McGlinn has the faith of her coach jitka clint Cova yeah goomer's had a good talk event she's been rock solid for the USA USA certainly have given away a lot in this competition this is what they took well video they've got people free on the ball Kothari is that bricks kindly well almost did for the Mexican team USA you've pretty much paid played the same formation throughout the tournament Mexico the only side I've really seen that have changed the formation and intensity of their game to suit the opposition they're playing against yes they have settled down now it's fall into Pinto its Rodriguez again back to Pinto there's some trouble Hernandez is getting involved in all of the rules here for the USA and the metal seems to have a little bit more freedom in switching sides yes well what they've done is Smith actually he's gone out the center forward position for the US here giving de bello a free rule in behind a bundle of energy all over the park as we see that free kick there Jamela give at the ball aware given the free kick away these two teams meeting twice at the 2010 tournament the USA won 2-1 in group play and one nail in championship and at least a group play result mirrors what we've seen earlier in this tournament well they also get the one deal win here there was a one-nil win earlier for Haiti what a goal it was that settled the issue in that third place play-off match and took Haiti to an historic World Cup qualification Mexico in the meantime looking to make a little bit of history for themselves never won this under-20 championship lost twice in the finals to the USA the last time in 2014 when they went on the for nil to the USA and back in 2010 when they lost one nil Sydney Leroux getting the only goal in the 86 minutes a real heartbreaker outside against Torres Torres was used as a substitute earlier in the tournament yeah but coming on in the last game showed a lot of industry and was far more incisive on the left side for the United States and has been kept in here yeah she was a bit of a surprise selection for me video to be honest Torres on that left hand side in front of Sanchez USA as I mentioned making five changes the one that most surprised he was Davidson out of this lineup yeah excellent defender gives nothing away very calm and calculated distributions excellent throughout the game also made a debut for the u.s. senior team that's good play by Espinoza in earning the corner of the Mexico yeah terrific counter-attack there three Mexican players blasting out of the defensive area the opposition's are all running in straight lines sorry it's plays for Kluber america ironic when you consider the opposition Tina's will take the free kick Mexican chants go up in the crowd sin keepers coming for it punch as well pressure ease for the moment Casares with the ball back inside and that's gonna be too easy for the keeper though bears thing on the left side for Mexico has coped well with the challenge of picket and Kuhlmann that will get high pressure there for Mexico get close to the port a chance gentlemen find the ball to suit it takes a free kick off of Lopez down at this near side this could be a good battle down the near side here Lopez for Mexico against cumin to strong girls have been taking the free kick there no best surprised about the call against her picking will take this free kick for the USA Stanford player is Pickett USA call it champions steps a little bit but gets a good cross end that could break for the USA and to the BOP stuff and edge of the seats up for the Mexico team has finish that's been the record their history but no one can take away from this Mexican side they played some great football and showing themselves that they can be very competitive history's meant so little in this competition a lot of history has been made with the first Caribbean side going to the other 20 World Cup well a different kind of history will be made here is that gonna happen Kuhlman goes down Mexico will certainly be hoping it is for them for the USA with five titles already going for double six remarkable yeah it is quite remarkable Georgia the quality they've got oh good scale there Martinez makes there from about herida past the shoulder on the far side yes as I said earlier video is still a bit fronting neither side have really settled down to play their stuff for both sides of the coin they have thought about the chance there she's thought about hitting it on the volley there Smith yeah well she's got great natural ability here there she is brings it down and just bounces back up catches around the heart referee wouldn't alternative put to give a free kick for handball mr. the theory on Rhea not you believe there's not being any stoppages at the plate in obviously I've seen a lot of each other in this tournament they know exactly what they're up against she was trying to play from the back there intercepted again by sort or Espinoza work and our socks off again for the team all she takes one under facing quite a few of those already for the day forward to Sofia Smith Kuhlman Sophia Smith has been more muted in her presence in this game but Coleman has had a fabulous start to this one yeah has provided some great passes already will set a chance of self how old bailed out there by the referee Espinoza's having a little stewards inquest into how how that didn't go all the way yeah just asking a few questions there miss Panora case followed by picking that's a good ball another excellent ball by Coleman Oh Arabic much to do there bit too early therefore Coleman who was still trying to get out of the blocks yeah well three girls they set the back of Mexico just step again much to come off u.s. player it's gone to Mexico this is the competition I've been looking forward to hell against Martinez in the middle of the park - were the most influential players on the field for the USA in Mexico rares and Lopez getting in each other's way again looking on USA had the best chance of the game to go ahead as well saved on the line yeah Smith was asking for a free-kick there felt she was capture much attention yes Smith they've been a handball there's picture all on the inside she was well defended Pinto his Martinez for Mexico good skills to disavow pulled back it looked like she was being pulled back by Pinkett and the referee saw it too yeah Carol option I'll agrees it's killed there from the two players how's Mexico that's what they've got these Mexican plays terrific skill sets but Latin American flair for the game but there's no doubt this game they will get tired in the later stages because of the water others ran that we've had chance for Mexico [Music] a wonderful tournament shark Mexico what they were having what a fantastic goal this is turns our fullback inside out when we see it again and then the power she generates for the shot it's quite remarkable as the fans had join it as we see it again big long hopeful ball up there Martinez heads it on but what about that for a finish it doesn't come any better than that in a Cup final looking to be champions what have gold what a start the game and it was similar to the goal in some senses to the goal that wanted for Haiti yes yes all : goes down slipped in the surface dad was a promising looking move here for the USA but Kuhlman unable to keep on her feet well you can't write the u.s. off they work of course what Nils down in their semi-final there's a Mexican fans enjoying themselves there and they're dressed in traditional we're very good that's nice to see proud of where they're from who they represent they've been here all the way through the tournament they are parents and relative areas are the medical team and these girls have not letting them down they've been excellent the Mexican side risen to every task he would go again look at the look at the work that Espinoza's put in Lin with the putt forward for the USA hollow beaten to it by Hernandez but there's very competitive this Mexican side Wow drops back to do some defensive work Pickett forward to Coleman doesn't break for Mexico here chip substantial they certainly are the smaller of the two sides but what what skill they have the Mexico team yeah as we mentioned they are the two oldest teams of the competition on average D'Mello were the shards that the goalkeeper has to dive across the save from going out for the corner could work Alvarado willing to keep there between the sticks for Mexico yes the two water sides get to the final something to be said for experience Christopher quia one of his specialties is all about analytics creates a lot of videos shows the team about their performances their good points where they can improve Farragut it's all been a she's been an outstanding defender for them it looks like her she got her he's winded there they've got a knock in the middle got the wind knocked out of her concern on the face of Christopher Cuellar he knows the importance of Garcia in this defensive unit for his team yes she's been tremendous all tournament Lydia thank god she's all care the young lady she's up and running USA restarting play Mexico have improved steadily but almost a giver they they're a pike Irma if improve steadily all the way as these tournaments have progressed it on the twenty level back in 2014 the Mexico team scored 22 goals and conceded only two in their for his four games and went into a showdown with the United States they lost four nil but kept it respectable to one nail up to the 60th minute the USA
