[Music] for this video I'll demonstrate how to use Stata to do a cross tabulation cross tabulation analysis is used when you want to get a better understanding of descriptive statistics for categorical data typically in the form of frequency counts and percentages so the data that I'm going to use for this example is the growth and enhancement data for Montana students and that is data that has been used to track progress in Montana k-12 schools so we're going to browse that data and we can see that we have our variables at the top of the spreadsheet here and the two variables that were interested in for this example are gender which are labeled of course female and male and then the other variable that we're going to examine is remedial math and either students are enrolled in a remedial math or not enrolled so if they're not enrolled they're designated as a as no and if they're enrolled they're designated as yes so we're gonna go ahead and do this analysis we're gonna go to statistics summary tables and tests and then we're going to go to frequency tables let me just move this over a little bit so you're able to see this so I'm gonna go to statistics summary tables frequency tables and then to a table with measures of Association and so you'll see this dialog box in a row variable we're gonna choose gender in the column variable we're going to choose remedial math and then I'm going to check within row call them relative frequencies and within our within column relative frequencies and within row relative frequencies now we'll do we'll look at some of these other analysis later on when we do chi-square so I'm gonna go ahead and submit that and this is what our our output looks like and so you can see we have our male row 118 are not enrolled in remedial math and 26 are and for females we have a hundred and nineteen that are not a role enrolled in remedial math and thirty-seven that are so this is the percentage of males that are not enrolled in remedial math eighty one point nine four and this is the percent that are 18 point zero six this is the percent of males in just remedial men that are not enrolled in remedial math forty nine point seven nine percent versus fifty percent of females who are not enrolled in remedial math what I've done though is I've put together a little document to help help us to be able to interpret this a little bit better and let me shrink this down so we can fit it on the screen here so we can see here that again if we are just looking at males eighty one point nine four percent are not in remedial math an eighteen point zero six percent are in remedial math so that's just interpreting the males now if we just want to interpret the percent across gender regardless of gender that are in that are not in remedial math we see that forty nine percent of males are not in remedial math and fifty point two one percent of females are not in remedial math so you can interpret the female row the same way as the male row and you can interpret the yes column the same way that we interpreted the no column here so I hope this helps you to understand how to conduct a cross tabulation analysis for the assignment that you'll do for this course
