welcome back happy hookers and welcome to my first crochet podcast if you're new here i'm chrissy and i like to crochet everything beautiful and useful and if you're not new here you'll be surprised to not see my hands from above but my face so that's always exciting i love it when i've been following someone for a while crocheting or crafting and then finally i get to see their face it's strange isn't it it's like where you used to talk on the phone to people and then you have an idea of what they look like and then when you meet them it's often nothing like you thought which is odd because sometimes you wonder what you think they look like so i'm going to keep this quite traditional in the world of crochet podcasts i'm going to talk you through some of my finished objects i'm going to talk about some of my works in progress i'm not going to talk about abandoned projects but i do have a unfinished object i haven't quite put it into the abandoned objects because i'm hoping that you guys can give me some tips on how i can power through so i hope you've got a cup of tea ready i wanted to keep this really chatty i love a crochet podcast where i can just leave it running in the background and listen along so i'm hoping that my followers you thank you so much for supporting me found this useful i'd love any feedback as it is my first time so let's have a look at the first finished object and i'm actually sitting on it so i have made a bubble cushion so i kind of broke two crochet not crochet rules but true of my crochet mantras if you like and one is i don't generally like variegated yarn it's just not my cup of tea however i do really like stripes enter the yarn cake now have i got a yarn cake yes so i used for this bobble cushion um karen yarnspirations baby cakes i think i got it from war warehouse i'm not sure how much it was i want to say approximately five pounds but i will pop a link down below and if you've ever crocheted bubbles which i hadn't you will know that they eat yarn about as quickly as probably my cats which i must warn you will appear at some point especially if something's crinkling or rustling and they eat yarn yet they do make such a oh it's one of those ones where you just want to keep feeling it and the fact that is um the cake with the stripes means that you can do some multicolours so um possibly a little bit um too much for some people both bubbles and stripes i must admit i quite like um just a plain block color but i really wanted to try this it took two of the cakes as i said um better than better than a finished object i think is learning a new technique and the new technique that i learned for this one was actually the crab stitch now if you're not familiar with the crab stitch it's a technique for edging it's often called the reverse single crochet and it is a really nice way to just finish and close the edging up and one thing i've noticed is if you've ever tried to um close or edge something up certainly that's got a little bit of three-dimensionality to it the excuse me i'm sniffing i've got a um a bit of a runny nose at the minute oh i hate youtubers that say excuse me i'm sorry i've got a sore throat but i think it's actually because i've just put the heating on i can't find a tissue so we'll power through just put the heating on it's very cold here um so sorry to ramble on so the um if you've ever tried to edge anything with single crochet it can sometimes do this do you know what i mean it sort of creates a little bit of a wavy sometimes you've not got enough stitches or you've got too many and because it's trying to get it extremely flat you get you get that however i think the crab stitch allows a little bit more tolerance because it's almost binding over the edge a little bit like a blanket stitch because it's creating that piping effect and you've got a little bit more texture i don't know if you can see if i give you a close-up you've got a little bit more texture you don't particularly get those ridges i mean it's obviously not perfectly straight because it's a cushion the corners popped out a little bit more etc and the great thing about this technique is it's really easy to go straight into the stitches now i do did have to edge the sides if you like which would have been these with a row of single crochet before i attempted the crab stitch because i wanted to make sure that i was definitely getting the right amount of stitches in there um to suit the height of my double crochet so if you'd love the pattern for this um that's wonderful please let me know if you'd like a pattern for this i haven't actually written it that's why i'm saying would you like it because i took a 12 inch um cushion polyfill from wool warehouse i think they're about two three pounds and i essentially made the first row stretched it a little bit and worked out that was probably going to be enough and then and carried on measuring it along however i appreciate it can be quite useful to simply follow a pattern so if you would like that and it will be very easy for me to write it up in terms of video tutorial i am planning on a video tutorial for this i have done one for the bobble stitch i believe i will double check that first however liked many crochet or crafters as soon as i'd finished this what did i do i went straight onto wool warehouse and i bought myself i think three more cushion fills they are still sitting in the cupboard over here um because you know good intentions i was on to the next thing and the next thing um but christmas i'll talk about christmas later and i know a lot of you probably thinking don't mention c word however um i think for crafters it's perfectly acceptable to get ahead with christmas um and i have got a little sneak peek of some things we're going to be talking about later cool so the bobble cushion um really happy with this um definitely want to create a few more i think i will persevere with the bubbles once again and even though they do eat a lot of yarn because they are just so nice and certainly in a block color it's going to make a really interesting feature and plus you can use the bubbles to create 3d pictures in that and there's something i've been working on and i'll show you in a minute um that i i've actually messed up so i'm going to be showing you it in the stages of trying to create it so finished object number two and the beauty of having a podcast number one is all my crochet projects up to now finished objects so i could absolutely amaze and pull out ten finished objects and it will be amazing the downside with that will be in a month's time when i choose to do another crochet podcast or however long i'm not going to have anywhere near that volume so i'm just going to show you two finished objects today um main ones that i've been working on so actually this one's wrapped up in tissue paper so if i undo it it's possible that a small furry friend might appear so baby blanket time now i have just posted a tutorial to this baby blanket online however i made two mistakes unfortunately one is my hands kind of veered off camera a little bit and so i do apologize and i also had a comment and all comments are welcome whether they're positive or negative i had one comment that i was actually going too fast and i've always prided myself on my tutorials being slow and steady and designed for a very an early crochet or a beginner to follow along comfortably and not have to keep stopping and starting so i do think i am going to record the baby blanket video because i don't want to set a precedent that my videos are a little bit um a little bit rough around the edges so bear with me and if you have watched it please do comment and give me any feedback on on whether you thought the video is useful so this blanket oh it's so soft can you see how drapey it is this blanket is probably i would say about a meter by 800 millimeters so it's kind of just perfect for laying in the bottom of a cart or laying over um the baby and the seat the car carrier the little the little rocking thing and the blanket was knitted in where is it a really nice oh i've got it here a really nice blend of bamboo and i believe it will be acrylic or polyester yes 50 bamboo 50 acrylic and it's by james c brett's innocence bamboo rich dk now bamboo yarn can be traditionally quite expensive and if you've used it or you have anything made of bamboo you will know why it creates such a soft luxurious feel to it and i do think that it is definitely worth it it's also going to um prevent the bobbling that you can get um with an acrylic once it's being if there's a lot of wear contact lots of times in the washing machine whereas i do think that adding that little bit of bamboo gives it a little bit more of a premium feel to it almost like a luster but also it's going to be less susceptible to bubbling which with baby blanket i mean that's going to be going through the wash a lot of times so once again wool warehouse i use three balls for this baby blanket and it is very simply one of my favorite stitches now the pattern for this is up on my website so if you have found the video a little bit too quick please do hop over and take a look at the pattern on my website now i don't know what this stitch is called and i've been on a crochet forum i can't think what it was i've been on an online crochet forum and i've asked a couple of times what this stitch is known as now there's different variations of stitches in twos and this stitch which is a set of two is a single crochet followed by a half double crochet and then we skip so and then we go single crochet half double crochet skip and then on the way back in turned rows we are placing that single crochet and that double crochet into the previous single crochet which is almost um kind of like where our hole is if you like just get that right so single crochet uh double crochet a single half double and it creates these little squares let me show you a little blocks can you see that it's a really nice pattern now i know that um people often work this with a single and a double um and there's lots of different names for them um across the internet but i've never actually found anyone um well i have found someone that uses this and there's a lady called yarn and chai which is quite amusing because i'm called crocheting tea bizarrely and i discovered her um a couple of months ago and thought how bizarre yarn and chai crochet teeth liquid kind of sister channels um she uses this stitch combo quite a lot in um some of her hats and scarfs baskets bags and i i really favor it but i i just can't for the life of me think what the name of it is but i love the half double crochet if you've got a favorite stitch please let me know because i absolutely love the half double crochet so single and a half double crochet and create this lovely baby blanket perfect size and wrapping it up ready to send to its um lovely recipient luckily she doesn't watch this channel so she's not going to know um or guess that it might be for her so if i pop that back over here so like i said um bamboo baby blanket in dk um i used a 4.5 millimeter hook which gave it just enough little a little bit of room with the dk to drape um but not too loopy and holy so that it's it's likely to snag um with little fingers and little nails on so um cool so i'm just gonna have a little sip of tea that's why it's called crocheting tea because i do love tea and in fact if anyone is looking for a tea recommendation there is a company out there called bird and blend tea they used to be called bluebird tea i think they originated in brighton and i love different teas not so much fruit teas but i like variations of black tea roy boss green tea and they do these amazing loose blend teas my favorite three at the minute are they've got one called fairy tale of new york oh my goodness it is such a magical christmas tea it's strange because it's a loose tea with coffee beans in and i think it has some cocoa shells and you wouldn't believe that you could drink a cup of tea that almost tastes like you're drinking a bailis it's it's very very strange combo that it's got coffee and but it's a tea and i also love another one called lazy boy which has got coconut in really nice for the evening and caffeine-free and then also um earlier on in the year when they did their easter collection and one called carrot cake which is lovely and just got loads of lovely spices and and really really nice so if you are into your tea and it's not just loose tea they do sell them with tea bags or little pouches that you can pop the tea in like um you know your own little tea bags that you can fill up and do check out bird and blend because i definitely recommend it so shall we talk about coasters because i am obsessed with coasters my instagram handle used to be called crochet chrissy before i set crochet and teal and once i started getting obsessed with coasters it was sort of like oh i think you're more close to chrissy now strangely enough as i maybe move on to my cushion obsession i could be called cushion chrissy maybe that what could be a theme for a month is in fact if you can think of something cool that i can crochet that's beautiful and useful that begins with the c pop a link down below and i'll i'll consider crafting it up and making a tutorial please don't put cardigan though because i've got a cardigan hidden in that cupboard as definitely an abandoned object um so garments especially larger ones head wear on fine hat scarves all of that garments are my nemesis they're my kryptonite at the minute and i do need to overcome that fear so um the flat circle coaster i'll show you them because they're not just finished objects there's ten thousand of these babies ten thousand of these spinach objects i'm actually making these for my mum at the moment oh i've just dropped it yeah so my mum has requested um a few of these she's actually going for these ones in grey now these ones in my video if you watched it i make them with haha i made them with siddhar number one chunky and the mustard i mean oh mustard this is just such i don't know how many years it feels like mustard just been up there in popularity for colours of um of garments and accessories however these are a little bit thinner and a little bit flatter and my mum really likes some that i had on the side and this is possibly becoming my new not my new favorite because it's a different weight of yarn but one of my top three it is let me find one with the sleeve on sheepy soft fun now i realize i might be a little bit late to the game with sheepies because i'm pretty sure there's been people raving about cheapy soft fun for many years but i love this oh my goodness it has a sticker with the center so that you can pull and start working from the center of the ball has anybody tried to do this on their own without this technique because i don't believe all balls are made for using out of the center like i know technically the way that they're they're wound they should be um however and and if you start from the center then it stops the ball rolling about the lounge and if you've got cats that's really handy the ball stays there and the yarn just comes out the middle however if most of the time you go inside you pull it you pull it you pull it and it goes all over and you end up with this big messy bit which once you've used up is fine but i mean that's just a complete usp for me um this is also um how would i put it i don't think it comes unwound you know how um some some yarns come around and then they start to split um and if you're maybe doing quite a tight stitch or you need to be handling it a little bit more say you're doing the bobble and you're going back and forth over a small bit you need a yarn that's definitely going to stand up to that and i've definitely found that sheep is soft fun it's cotton and acrylic blend 60 cotton 60 acrylic which again it gives it that kind of nice premium feel of the cotton however unlike the cotton because a lot of cottons definitely for me come around it's soft so it's got that little bit of a bounce it's probably going to be a lot drapier than cotton i mean if this were made in cotton i'm not sure it would definitely drape as much as that um based on this um so really really like it sheep is softball and i've got a few different colors um of that and i plan on definitely making um a few different things so actually let's talk about pom-poms i mean pom-poms and we've been making them since we're about five years old haven't we so i am this is a little bit off topic of um crow shape but definitely fiber related i am in the process of making a christmas tree making a christmas tree out of driftwood i'll pop a lovely picture here of what i mean stolen from pinterest clearly i've had this driftwood i used to live in yorkshire um in scarborough so i used to forage for uh driftwood and my mum was getting to the point where she just needed me to um take my driftwood and i mean i left home 20 years ago and i still had stuff in the garage so um so i'm in the process of making anyway this driftwood crochet triple crochet this driftwood christmas tree um which is quite exciting because it means i've got to drill some holes get some notes put it all together and i do want to put chris traditional christmas decorations on but i wanted to put some pom-poms on because i wanted it to have that rustic wooden feel blended with my crafts because that's very much kind of um you know my my cup of tea and that's definitely the look i like so i decided to take the plunge and get on board with ah these pom-pom makers i think you can get them in hobby craft i bought these from amazon they weren't particularly expensive um if you've used them please let me know could you work out how to use them straight away because i definitely looked at it and thought i have not got a clue how to use them they're actually quite easy once you realize that you just open the sides let me use the bigger one you open the sides like this and then you wind your yarn around that that's crescent and then you close it and then you flip over and you wind your yarn around this crescent and then you flip over and then you hold it um yeah you just sort of hold it you take your scissors and snip around and then because of the two pieces it's got this lovely little groove that goes all the way around that you put your yarn and you pull it and you put your yarn in and you pull it tight and then you go ah and it comes out in the middle ah i love that noise i made that a lot for magical things appearing so pom-poms yes so i've only made two so far and i keep noticing that one of them keeps going missing from my basket so i'm sure you can imagine who which is yet to make an appearance i was really hoping that she would debut on camera um so yes pom poms brilliant shall we talk about a pattern no before we do christmas i want to actually show you a confessional crochet confessional i love crochet magazines and my favorite i think is probably one called simply crochet um i read them on the ipad i actually use an app called readerly or red delete it must be readily which is really handy because subscriptions to magazines can be very expensive can't they and i think for readerly you pay 7.99 a month but it gives you access to thousands of magazines and you can also share this and set up profiles so i share it with my parents share it with my partner um across everything you know all kinds of hobbies sports health fashion science technology it's brilliant if you if you like magazines then it's definitely for you so i have simply crocheted through that and i think that this pattern came from simply crochet so i'll put another picture up here by the magic of video editing i wanted to create this beautiful granny square summer cotton there's the cats i can hear them summer cotton top um so i changed the colors slightly and i started to use um i started to use drops muscat girls a little bit of growling drops muscat 100 cotton but mercerized so it's going to give that really nice lustrous feel so i decided i was going to use um a lovely um sort of apple apple lime green um almost like a cornflower blue and then this really nice minty green on the outside and then white and they're they're an offset granny square that you create so you've got your your one there and then you're just going down two edges to create your square simple enough how many did i make oh my goodness look at all of these probably 15 15 of them anyway it's actually uh looks a little bit like a stingray doesn't it or a jellyfish i simply can't be bothered to carry on i know that i've got to weave all of these ends in and i know that i've got to attach them all together and i know that there's really super clever crocheters out there that can weave their ends in and join as they go and kudos to them i'm not putting them down i'm actually saying it because i'm really jealous and i wish i could do that and i wish i was that person but alas um i i'm not so i have about 855 ends that i need to weave in and no matter how many times i tell myself oh that's a wonderful job sit down with a cup of tea in the evening when you're watching um maybe watching something you know call on netflix and you can just start weaving them in and i just haven't so um and then the weather changed and nobody's going to be wearing soft cotton loose t-shirt jumpers so they've gone in a basket now they've gone in a bag if you buy things from wool warehouse if you live in the uk though i do apologize if you don't um you get these lovely um muslin bags with ribbons on that yarn comes in which soon become extremely useful for either keeping your project keeping your project back together um but also your project bag that you can then do this and then you can do this and then you can go i don't want to face it i can't talk about it um hello you might have seen a kitty there i was going to talk about the basket weave stitch but i think i've are you coming out i think i've lost my basket weave um swatch i do think if you bear with me i might be able to just sneak it out of the cupboard um so the basket weave i hadn't done this in egypt no i hadn't ever done the basket weave and i was very inspired if i just move my easel and give me one second and i will attempt to find it because i know it's here where are you here we go right i've got a few things i should probably talk about at this point so um the basket weave who inspired me so there's a lady called lindsay noon nunes i think it is um she has a crochet podcast called lottie and albert if you're um if you're familiar with her and she is taking part in something called the traveling afghan project where a collective of crocheters all over the world have got together each designed a square for an afghan and they essentially make their square attach it to the the afghan that's been posted to them and then post it on and you can follow along now i was a bit late to the game but i still wanted to have a go at the um the basket weave which i had seen before um but i was never really not confident it's not the right word i have you this uses something called the front and back post stitches where you essentially have to go round the post of the stitch and i had tried it before um in a garment that's probably why because i tried it in a garment because i'd heard that you can use them to make cables in the same way i think the red arrows have just gone over we're quite lucky to live near where the red arrow acrobatic plane team are so um we do hear them quite a bit yes so i tried the um i tried the front and back post to make faux well not faux but to make um some ribbing in um i think i actually started to jumper yeah garments like i said and i didn't get on with it and i think it just put me off however that's trying to connect up lots of them into um you know weaving back and forth and if they're out a little bit this is my impression of a uh i'm sorry this is my impression of a front post stitch trying to replicate a cable being out of sync anyway however this is quite simply uh rows of threes in crisscross so i filmed a tutorial for this because i really wanted to go you know do the crochet in t way which is slow steady take time to um to mention all the little things and tips that you might need rather than just telling you how to do the stitch it's how to hold it how to turn it where you might miss a stitch things to look out for that's that's definitely my favorite with my tutorials and while i was filming it i was really excited about the travelling afghan so i was you know all guns blazing saying how i just created the first one and i was gonna set myself a mission to by christmas day i was going to be sat with my traveling afghan on my lap um enjoying some christmas drinks and i got really excited and i created the next one which i think looking at it is possibly the lemon peel stitch this is actually a really nice um a really nice stitch for a washcloth or even a blanket actually this again sheepish this isn't the cheapest soft one and then more of a traditional one here and then we were up to here and then once again we were off to the next thing i possibly think the baby blanket came on so i have three i could continue i you know i wish i'd not set myself this christmas mission um not because oh no i don't wish i hadn't set myself the christmas mission i wish i hadn't filmed the tutorial for this because now i'm going to post it and i'm going to feel like a massive hypocrite i'm going to have to put underneath in big text just to make you aware um i did actually completely sack this project off um i will not be finishing this by christmas and please forgive me for my shameful um expectations so the basket weave do you think i should put it up the video regardless of the fact that i bang on about the the traveling afghan even though i'm not planning on taking part in it let me know so that's a it's a part unfinished part abandoned part oh i don't know i don't know okay so one more thing one more thing and then we'll talk about christmas and then we'll wrap it up because i'm at half an hour and i don't want to on my very first youtube um get a little bit too excited and um just keep going and bore everyone to death and so if you are enjoying this please do give it a thumbs up because it definitely um it helps the channel it helps me know if people like it if you don't like it that's absolutely fine i need to understand what people want what do they want from me so back to um cidar number one so we've talked about bubbles and we've talked about sudan number one chunky and we've talked about things being useful now useful for me can also be decorative i think there's various levels of decorative come to mind and i wanted to create a seasonal decoration for christmas i wanted to create a wall hanging i was inspired by this because back to the driftwood christmas tree i had originally bought some wooden dowel that i was going to use for the centerpiece of the christmas tree scrap that i'm good not going to i'm going to use a metal rod that i can screw and nuts on so i can kind of hold the um the pieces of driftwood apart so i thought oh wall hangings my mum used to um teach me my mum used to do macrame with me and they don't a lot of people call it macrame and i've always called it macrame and now i feel like i've been taught wrong how do you pronounce it macrame or macrame macrame for one macrame for two so wall hanging so the dowel and the thought about the wall hangings and i thought about the bubbles and i thought i'm going to create a tasseled christmas wall hanging with a christmas tree made out of bubbles can you see there we go so this is the start and obviously the tassels all come off here and i wasn't sure if i was going to do tassels um just tassels with bubbles or just plain tassels with the yarn like this or whether i was going to comb it out and fringe it a little bit like if you've seen my how to fringe a coaster um i'll pop a link above it's beautiful or fringing if you're into asmr watching combing out a fringe i think i watched my own video back about three times um and i know that feels a little bit self-absorbed but it was just so satisfying watching the fringing um fringe and then continue and then a wooden dowel and then a hanger however i've made a massive error with the way that i've done my bubbles um and i think i did it when i was quite tired and i suspect what i've done is i've crocheted into the wrong part of the top of the bobble causing all of my bubbles to slant giving the illusion that i've got kind of uneven sides here i do actually have the same amount of stitches here and here but it's just one's getting hidden behind the other here because it's it's going that way so that's just a little bit of insight into the um the pain sometimes of trying to design something yourself which i encourage you to do but realizing that even though i've written it out and you know what i can actually show you how i have drafted um the design for this i'm a visual person i love working with crochet grids and patterns um so this is how it has been drafted out i've kind of my calculations of where my bubbles are going to go and my stitches and you know what my turning chains are going to be etcetera but i've just realized that um either i've gone into the wrong part of the stitch or i need to re-calculate how i'm going to do it so i'm not going to pull it down i made that mistake so many times i'm not going to pull it down i'm going to just fasten it off and leave it because i need to compare because if it still doesn't look right on the second one hello we have a friend if it still doesn't look right on the second one i'm not going to know if it's the same as before why are you so cold i need you to come out of the trolley girl um sorry sidetrack moment come say hi to the viewers hello this is little mo she's the naughty one oh yeah anyway so yes so that's the last thing let's talk about christmas yay right onwards two years ago three years ago we attempted to put our christmas tree we had gotten um poppet our eldest rectal she is a bit of a beast at about eight to nine kilos um and we came home and the lights didn't work luckily they were battery-powered um and we found the lights the wires like this you know they'd definitely been there given the snip and then later we'd find her in the tree the baubles scattered down the hallway so we just scrapped the tree um because i was coming home and finding a cat that looked like she'd been to a fancy dress as ziggy stardust with a face covered in glitter scrap the tree and i decided we'll just make small christmas items and decorations to put around the house so i crocheted a santa and a christmas tree and i'll see if i can find the patterns for these because these weren't mine patterns and well this definitely wasn't my pattern this is definitely if you if you go on pinterest and type in christmas santa you're going to definitely find this little fella and he is just um i'm not a huge fan of um crochet toys and the amiga roommate i did start when i first learned to crochet make a lot and i have actually got a little dumpling cap there is it there is it there there pointing i'm actually not pointing anywhere near it it's like a weird illusion um which again if you google dumpling cat that's a really easy one to make um however they're just they're a bit like weebles anyone remember them weebles wobble but they don't fall down no they're not like weebles they needed to be like evil so i had to this year stabilized them with some um wooden slices and the glue gun and i'm hoping that this little chat now isn't going to fall over and also the cat can't go oh and then he goes tumbling off the mantelpiece like this so christmas tree um i mean i don't really think this is anyone's pattern i mean i would say a crochet cone is definitely open source i don't think you can claim a crochet um cone as your own pattern um i mean you can certainly create a pattern using it but i don't think you could um you know complain if anybody else used a similar pattern um for theirs so um a christmas tree cone i could probably um find a nice cone pattern um and draft up a little bit of something for christmas if people are interested now i'd like to create a couple of larger ones of these in maybe like a white and a grey and then actually put buttons on them and steer away from traditional christmas colors because although i do like the red and the green i think it's lovely when you um when you have things that are suited to your um your color palette in your lounge so our color palette in our lounge is beige cream and beige and white and having seen come on darling my cat you can probably see why because it means that her hair bless her little face her hair doesn't really show up because my living room is the colour of my kitties so my plan is essentially if i match that with my christmas decorations by making them similar colors i just think it'll have a really chic feel a bit like um for autumn autumn we call it autumn over here in the uk full um when people have their pumpkins i know you can get white pumpkins but when people have black and white pumpkins and you know different colored and they paint them and various things rather than having just you know the traditional oranges and things like that so i think i finished i'm going to leave you with um one little thing so i've talked about t um i thought i'd leave you with something else that i really enjoy um i'm a big reader and i'm on goodreads i'm not sure what my goodreads user name is um but let me know if anyone is watching this on goodreads please um pop your username down below and i'll definitely follow you um and recently i've been enjoying um kind of light-hearted thrillers probably written for females i would hazard a guess so i'm currently reading a book called um i reading called the perfect couple now i can't remember who it's by i think it's by someone i'm not sure i want to say tm logan but i don't think so i think he's written the holiday um i'll pop a lovely heart of the book here um really really enjoying it i'm reading on my kindle otherwise i could show you the physical book so if you like um if you're always looking for a good book
