Crime, Poverty & Despair In The UK's Most Dangerous City.

[Music] by one of the residents here of birmingh literally they were asleep they had no idea they were like traumatized me this is the entrance to one of the recreation areas here in Birmingham welcome to Birmingham the UK's second largest city with a population of 1.2 million in climbing Birmingham ranks as the UK's second largest city with a crime rate percentage higher than London let's explore Birmingham and find out whether or not it really is one of the most dangerous places to live in the UK first impressions of Birmingham city center not bad at all all of the shops seems to be open and running the streets are clean feel fairly safe as well no complaints thus far let's dive deeper into this city and find out whether or not the reputation that Birmingham has is warranted let's go can see the mixture there of the old medieval architecture there with the ball ring the modern shopping center just behind it old and new some absolutely beautiful architecture to be found here in Birmingham city center stunning old Victorian style buildings Birmingham was mostly built up during the 18th and 19th century during the Industrial Revolution here in the United Kingdom so throughout the years Birmingham has always been an industrial Hub within the United Kingdom Britain was built on the cities like Birmingham Bristol Manchester Liverpool where the Industrial Revolution was really [Music] buffed you can see behind me another tremendous building here in Birmingham city center I'm really impressed by the architectural beauty of Birmingham I was not expecting to see architecture on this scale there lies the statue of Queen Victoria here in Birmingham City [Music] Center even in the second largest city in the UK right in the city center lies some new developments however they are empty and abandoned so as beautiful as Birmingham city is Birmingham does have an underbelly with one of the highest crime rates in the United Kingdom the crime rate percentage is actually higher than London Birmingham certainly scores as one of the most dangerous places to live in the United Kingdom Security on the streets of [Music] Birmingham not only is Birmingham home to some of the highest crime rates to be found in the United Kingdom is also home to some of the highest rates of homelessness and poverty well guys that was Birmingham city center as you all know most people don't actually live in the city Cent so let's head out to some of those residential areas and explore where the people of Birmingham actually live see the gentleman there just behind my shoulder clearly under the influence of some sort of substance there he was just completely killed over like a zombie I think he might have been on the monkey dust well guys I've been joined here by two of Ben's American viewers say hello to Isaiah and Maddie hello hi hi so guys what is your what's brought you to Birmingham today and what you what's your thoughts uh we were we were recently uh we were recently in Norwich which is um when we were there it was sunny um friendly welcoming this is sort of the otomy right the opposite really um so to see the Polar Opposites it's really uh it gives you a better uh view of Britain but um yeah was it what you was expecting not at all this no no no not at all this is uh much dirtier so are Americans aware of the situation in the UK with you know areas like this very sort of deprived and poverty stricken I would say not at all in fact almost the opposite almost every American at least that I know yeah wants to be more like the UK from what I've seen here beautiful castles and fairy tale L exactly like Harry Potter I'm sure there's like dragons flying around here somewhere St George will be over there somewhere slaying yeah yeah exactly but you've touched base on the ground now guys and you've seen the realities of um life in Birmingham for some people and it's it's high open and the shopping isn't it yeah no really is it's sad it's honestly sad because I can see Britain is a great country and just to see some places like this be forgotten is really sad oh bless you guys yeah no it is sad well thank you ever so much your time there m and is I really appreciate it thank so so much well guys I'm in one of the residential areas of Birmingham and I must say I am shocked at the deprivation the poverty and the amount of homelessness to be found on the outskirts of Birmingham truly shocking SES look at all that in the bush there behind me guys Birmingham just seems to be like one big rubbish dump the moment you step outside the city center there just rubbish and crap everywhere I've never seen anything like it well there you go guys fill your street with friendliness this is the entrance to one of the recreation areas here in Birmingham do you think you'd bring your kids down here for a play in the park here it's just some dumped it's like a fullon old Lori flatb look it's the wheel arches right in the middle of the Nature Reserve or Recreation ground here in Birmingham mate what is that about what's that about insane is it uh the hansworth area of Birmingham is absolutely renowned for violent crimes holding some of the highest crime rates in the United [Applause] Kingdom rubbish absolutely everywhere as I said the recent article WR about Nineveh Road here in Birmingham stated that the rats are the size of dogs and that there's piles of rubbish that have not been cleaned up in over a decade absolutely shocking scenes here in Birmingham look at that it's as tall as the bins it's 3ft pile of rubbish bags well guys as you know birmingham's an absolutely huge City so we've headed over to one of the residential areas s Oaks to check this area out and see if the reputation of Birmingham is warranted let's go you can see there's a stark difference with the amount of litter and rubbish on the streets that's my first impressions no signs of mattresses or sofas on the streets currently I believe the Celio area of Birmingham holds a high population with the students of Birmingham there's a few different uh universities within the city and I think a lot of the students are housed in the celo area so as you can see guys we're walking onto the main Celio High Street area of Birmingham now there's definitely a different feeling in Cel Oaks as opposed to the hansworth area where we were just previously certainly a STK contrast to the hansworth area Cel Oaks on Surface seems quite nice 99% of the shops are open and busy the streets are clean so we're walking down the streets here the residential area of C Oaks it's just a wash with students the students everywhere it must be one of the main areas for the digs for the student accommodation so I'm with one of the locals here one of the University students will so how is CIO yeah it's all right mate uh I'm in my fourth year now so I've been living living here a few years um yeah it's decent like uh in in the daytime it's it's it's peaceful it's all right um but yeah at night it can get a bit dodgier like uh quite a few drunk people and some homeless and stuff but uh in general it's okay like um I there are a few stories I know like of uh like the police getting involved with some altercations and stuff really yeah so well even even myself like my car has been broken into before like I just wow down on this road yeah literally just up here like I came down uh one morning got in my car like to get in my car yeah and my windows just smashed in oh my goodness yeah people like Nick stuff I've seen people walk down streets like trying people's doors and stuff to see if they're unlocked like in the evenings and stuff yeah it's it's a bit like that sometimes I mean mostly it's all right but that that kind of stuff does go on yeah definitely yeah I know like I know a house just in the street over where um they were literally sleeping and someone came in their room at night nicked their car and then drove off in their car yeah whilst they're in the room yeah literally they were asleep they had no idea and then next morning their car's gone and uh their laptop's gone like everything like they could tell someone have been in their room so yeah of course they were like traumatized me that is that is traumatizing isn't it yeah it's tough wow I wasn't aware of that sort of stuff so would you say Celio is one of the main hubs for the the the uh student residents Yeah so basically all these houses you can see around here literally every single one is rented by students really like all these signs say toet and stuff they're just up the whole year they just keep them rolling like rent for one for a year and then go so they don't even bother taking the signs down they just yeah yeah there is pretty much on every single house isn't it they're too L too L too L too L literally all these all these people walking past every single one they all go to the university of Birmingham crazy and how long have you got left of your studies I'm almost done mate I got like a couple of months left and then I'm done so I can't wait to to be done be honest well fair play will thanks thanks ever so much to
