in 60s was a memorable era for me as a player and the commentator witness and Marvis cricketing events and played alongside some great players in that decade among them Freddy Truman and Ted Dexter and Kenny Barrington of England in the West Indies West Hall and Garfield Sobers Lance Gibbs and Rowan Kenai South Africa Graham Pollock and in Australia Neil Harvey and Alan Davidson and many others as well well for the purposes of this video we've researched the BBC archives to find as much good quality stuff as we can for incidents and players now bear in mind that the actual quality of the film in the 1960s wasn't as good as the 70s that wasn't as good as the 80s and now we're into the 90s which is very much better sometimes we don't even have a complete sequence but I can guarantee you that just a glimpse of these great players and the incidence is well worth having on your video first though let's have a look back at another era back to the 50s 1956 to be exact and Old Trafford and Jim Laker a unique cricket match there was a series where Ian Johnson skip at Australia first test at Trent Bridge was drawn the second was a smashing win / Australia on a green top at Lord's and the third was a dress rehearsal for Laker and lock they played it Headingley and they got 18 wickets in that match so on to Manchester England made 459 and in the 10th over of the Australian innings Jim Laker came on to create cricket history and this is the amazing film story of how Jim Laker balls Australia first ago is common McDonald he's waiting and emiliĀ“s davis has given him out yes I thought he must be out that's the beginning and Australia's 48 for one becomes 48 for two as Harvey is clean bowled by Laker Lakers sorry teammate Tony Locke helps with one wicket but then it's Craig LBW Laker and without adding a run Makai is out caught Oakland polled Laker and he's caught by appealing to the umpire Nemours Davis good night Australia sixty two four five and there's no stopping leakin Keith Miller goes next caught Oakman gold Laker seventy three four six become seventy three four seven as the Australians collapse Richie Benaud has a go but he too becomes a victim of Laker he's going to be caught by Statham archers Lakers next capture one Archer stumped by Evans and then Maddox is bold lekha eighty-four for 9 with Laker bowling himself into cricket history and he makes sure of it by bowling Ian Johnson and so takes nine wickets for 37 runs something no Englishman has ever done before against Australia and as Australia follow-on laker is at it again once more it's party bold Laker the next day during a brief spell in play it's buck gold Laker it's Burt go fight lock rain Rob's Laker of further glory but on the last day he's back and craves out gold Laker yes I stink sir yes now comes the breakthrough the tires caught Oakland bowled Laker next to go is Keith Miller out for a duck bold Laker leap Oh victim number six is Archer court Oakland bold Laker fun all this time McDonald is batting well but when he's hit 89 he too becomes bold Laker seven wicked so far Laker now it's been old old Laker be building a hundred ninety eight for eight and all they bowled Laker and 30 minutes later Linfen two falls to the leg trap the old Laker he's cookie called him busy is he out no yes he's out he's given out waiting for the appeal and Laker get all ten that's the question everyone's asking as he falls to Maddux if he's out 10 wickets to Laker and it's Australia bowled Laker he's taken all 10 Australian wickets a feat never done before in any Test match anywhere it's the sporting performance of the year after draw at The Oval England won that series 2-1 in the period up to 1960 England were unbeaten at home there was a drawn series then in South Africa to all the three new win against the West Indies for nil over New Zealand and in 1959 victories in all five tests against the Indians overseas they lost to Australia in 58 9 that was four nil but they beat West Indies in 59 60 with a single victory in Trinidad in 1960 the run continued with a three nil win over South Africa and the following year Australia returned when I was Captain after draw dad's Boston Neil Harvey took over at Lord's for what turned out to be a heart-stopping victory then came Fred Truman's match at Headingley and what a performance on an interesting-looking pitch a straighter won the toss and battered England gained what was a useful first innings lead and then Fred in the Australian second innings took five four none in 24 balls here he is now at the start of that spell he bowls to Neil Harvey who's on 53 2 and Alonso to Hardy and he's caught at cover point by dick stop are they out for next up both Tillman for 53 of failure 99 of 331 runs on ellentube urge it was the field forever they'll be on he's a very good picture one could see the spin working oh it goes back purge lvw bow down and naught and Australia 102 for 440 runs off Truman to O'Neill O'Neill Kadri now Davidson receiving his first ball from Truman appeal briquettes behind the widget given not on most of the appeal coming from the crowd who are now pretty excited Truman two sips filming the better I truly Australia's captain clean biodiversity Stallone to monarda Makai he's got behind the widget and Truman has taken five wickets for no ride no fun frustrate her there England won the match and squared the series to that point but there was some fun for Australia in the following game at Old Trafford and the final day Alan Davidson hit 20 from one over from David Allen and shared in a 98 run stand for the last wicket with Graham McKenzie and what had turned around that was after three wickets had fallen for two runs at the start of the day's play in the end England needed 256 in all the win and Ted Dexter almost blasted a straighter out of the game with a wonderful 76 one of the best short innings I've ever seen here he is now taking strike with the score 154 1 go behind the way you Dexter caught behind by crowd off there now for 76 the England captain Peter may walks out with 106 runs required and eight wickets in hand minutes later he's on his way back to the pavilion for a duck Earl by Benner and now been a rarely takes come on as he's bowling to brown close and he's got behind square leg Dahl those inevitable he's green bold Subba Rao bold as bold simply magnificently this afternoon yes he's caught by Simpson let slip Murray Colt Simpson Bell Benner Ben is now taken five 453 553 yes he's our del BW Barrington ouch lbw build Makai for five and this is now 171 for seven Oh magnificent catch by Simpson what a fine catch these pauses zip caught by Meno in the slips crewmen Corp ennoble Simpson for eight and England are 193 for nine and I don't think this new ball will be needed or not for very long t-ball Australia have won and they've kept the ashes there was some good team performances at Old Trafford that afternoon and what about that second slip cats taken by Bob Simpson Simpson was the best slip fielder I ever saw that catch I reckon was a perfect example of why he has that rating the ashes were retained by Australia and the series was won 2-1 after a draw at the Oval in the final Test match England lost to nil in a series in India in the winter they then beat Pakistan in Pakistan 1 nil as a warm-up for the home series between the two countries in 1962 where Tom gravely made a comeback her again there was no greater pleasure in cricket playing or watching than to be there when grave knee was at his elegant best he was a wonderful all-round batsman we join him now batting against nazim al Ghani he's on his way to a delightful 97th for I think no right three there's 100 partnership afraid Nazim has been rather costly it's gravy's 50 this is mama Burlington now that's gone up to the side screen that's Paul that's his 12th Paul he's done some beautiful straight drives Oh our fish but is the third man nassim chasing it down he won't get it all runs more on three to seven thirty three hours but he's kept on in going 96 not out your big berkey runs across and stops that so it shows a play England who won the toss to look at their score scoreboard number six it's half it's number three gravity that was a 4-nil win for England over Pakistan no better way in which a team could limber up for a five-match Test series in Australia out there they were to come up against Alan Davidson he's a great left-hand all-rounder and over the years he'd posed so many problems for batsmen he poses them now for David Shepherd no scope this time quite harmless here's the fourth ball it's a vicious late in swinger Davidson shouts Shepherd out for North in England are none for one and before the over is out Davidson misses Dexter's off stumped by a whisker worst follow soon after lunch Davidson striking again what a bowl between back-to-back England 19 for two David really up Waveney Park kids by Fred thickness and uncertain starter faces Davidson and he's caught behind the leg grants caught behind by German at 4:15 and Englander on the slide six wickets time for 292 Davidson has a go at Fred crewman holds the stage only briefly a wild Yahoo comes down with icicles on it safely into the hands of O'Neill England have lost eight wickets now for 324 a great left-hander firing away at bran stay them stroke not quite in the textbook no wonder Jim Swanton reported for his paper but the England fast bowlers batted as though conscious of what would be expected of them with the ball flew to number 11 now Coldwell and he goes to court by Benno in the gully so England lead by only 15 after all that's marvelous stuff from Davidson he got six for 75 against England in that test but he was matched by England's Fred Truman he was five or 62 gave him than the chance to win the match and take a one-nil lead in the series Bob Simpsons the batsman here feeling the full effect of Truman's control of pace and swing Simpson is out 4:14 the first Australian wicket Falls at 30 but when O'Neil comes in to bat versus to follow Truman with his tail right up has O'Neill edging and Qadri slip catch lowdown as a gem it's a great personal achievement for Freddie truman and Colin Qadri to dismiss Simpson O'Neal without addition to the score venno edges and is superbly caught by cadre at first slip humans figures are now for 453 and the Australian table has sags an 8 for 228 the lovable Truman is obviously full of admiration for cardigans brilliant cats Truman boughs and McKenzie is bold without scoring Australian 9 for 228 England made 3 for 237 to win the match with Shepherd Dexter and Ken Barrington stars England went on to New Zealand easily won that series 3 nil then in 1963 at home they were host to the West Indies John Edwige made his debut to Dexter and Lance gives with to the stars the latter taking five 459 and six 498 first though here's a look at Ted Dexter he's facing Charlie Griffith oh it's all right it's just clear we've been put up a great hand but he cleared him come down to the side screen for four runs oh what a lovely snowfall rug Oh energy out here he is I'm Ali is hectic of catches caught Passover's and that must have turned the auto congratulation and applause because Frank Worrell himself has taken the ball and he's gonna bill his slow ones now this is fairly unusual that's a full pitch and it's going for four my spendable pitch will dispatch five extra take them up to 40 something is fit for Frank while locals normally bills medium-fast over the wicket another full pitch and another fall if I'm not wrong and that's the thing Dexter's been in exactly two hours he's now hits six Falls and that's another fall lovely spoke at how the Crowder enjoying it - oh nice kgs gonna be coded extra cover so your kiss captain Broncos is our fire here it's Gibbs now to Dexter oh that's going up on the next time might well be caught by hunters underneath it and he's a magnificent cat was he sick no he's listed I thought he had it in his hands for sex the googling let's take our textures gun off the engine masters gunshot they caught my wallet Dexter's gone 473 the same combination accounted for David Allen and now Fred titmice faces the West Indian off-spinner is that after Bo's alphabet alphabet that bad I think another one for Sobers oh he's gone too coming out for five 202 for nine I think you might have a swing before very long the non are now it's butcher oh well every chance of a swing Enda statham the end of England in their first he was 205 all outs the second innings Gibbs was again among the wickets quite quickly at 162 here's Kenny Barrington taking strike diddle by that - Mangum is out cold by Gibbs for eight and he's got behind gun cupboards put my my the very very funny he's got oh is he dad he's not put my hunt okay without Porto go port or sad moment for English hopes and peasant output Hickok by photos oh my goodness me David Allen falling to Gibbs to give him that return of six 498 11 wickets in the match Lance was a great spin bowler he followed Jim Laker under the world stage having made his debut at the Sydney Cricket Ground in 1961 and that tide test series and that was after it became clear to Frank Worrell that the Australians had worked out sunny Ramadan Gibbs took eight wickets in their debut match and never looked back he was a baller with great command of spin and flight and the batsman often found themselves a foot or so short of where they wanted to be in driving the ball this was a great series to watch she was made more so by the fact that there were results in four of the Test matches and in the other at Lord's there were four ways the game could have gone when the last ball was being bowled Colin Cowdrey better with the broken arm the three balls remaining Derek Shackleton was the batsman there are eight wickets down and six runs are required for victory oh yeah it ran he's going to be run out he must be you'll never get there he's out he's run out Shackleton's run out with Qadri can still come in Shackleton has run out and a caught the run doesn't count so it's still six runs to go and two balls and Qadri with one hand is going to come in well he didn't win the race there Shackleton David Allen was up to him very quickly I don't think he realized five runs needed for a tie six for a win car G resumes nineteen not out what tactics he can be suggesting I just don't know everybody clambering round by the side cadres given the orders which ten text is obviously sent down and we'll see see what's going to happen to balls to go then very dark six runs needed to win the copybook test as fuzzy citizens holding our alum now and he's going to block it and the orders obviously are to save this game which has come so close and the last ball of this test match coming now where's Hall Hills up one finger to maybe Phillips new nods one ball left Paul will put everything into this look at him just gathering his last breath yes they're sucking in there and David Allen's heart beating unheard out very fast mouse ball now it's a pro what a wonderful finish that was to one of the most marvelous games of cricket I've watched this took us on to edge piston with Dexter and Sobers the main I catches they are in flamboyant competition in the game where England squared the series there's Ted Dexter off the mark probably four to possibly history I think they'll be content with to you so here's Griffith the game to Dexter oh what a wonderful stroke that's going right up for four right up to long on nice stroke you won't go to the boundary though Lance Gibbs chasing it is - Dexter what a good stroke that's coming absolutely dead straight and will run down before the pavilion that's his third drive of the morning and Laurie gray I'm powering his second Test match oh very up his shot indeed but fortunately for Dexter safe and it put up puts up the 50 there's Ted Dexter with 29 just me hope for England's sake getting into his stride I'll stare out there the fatal thing to say Dennis yes I'm trade he played that one oh he's playing that ball wide admit on not a very good steak made right across the line and Sobers to Barrington oh look at it team Bell got off inside edge of his bat came back at him and bang to desired buh-bye servers now for nine in England 72 for three at so bestest charity how was that yes he must be out right I'm afraid I must agree to you you had a very good view made no stroke in the ball swinging at him and he was dead in line between wicked in with you I had service depart the audiences are quite clearly that hair the slick from here going up to one hundred and seventy two four six and here comes parks Court male bold Sobers for twelve earning to close these out yes is LBW got of a good view of that one those they'll be W bill Sobers 455 wonderful balling wonderful balling by Fred truven in that game twelve wickets in the match and a massive victory for England by two hundred and seventeen runs the last two tests were a triumph for the West Indian pace bowlers West Hall and Charlie Griffith at Headingley West Indies won by 221 runs Mickey Stuart's the batsman Charlie Griffith Ebola daddy's got the art in time to see him caught in the golly by kids and Stewart is out called gives birth with it for two and England are thirteen for one all from the football end to build a bonus he's cooked he's caught by hunter parsnip bonuses out in the 19 for two buh-bye 32 between let's go pop right back many across one indeed so we're so Charlie Plymouth is on a hat-trick now what a moment is this everybody clustered round except cover point Philip Sharpe to stop the hat-trick against Charlie Griffith tried another York oh please course oh they'll put salt made incident shot out for naught it is the 2id stance and parks personnel so money can because he's caught by Gibbs falling forward in the valley couldn't avoid that bun Gibbs grazes elbows he flings himself forward and catches that so Parks is out port bike gives off Griffith for 22 England of six to nine four six and Griffin has now taken five for 20 and he's caught him he's caught Ronald caught that catch the bangs on his out poor quarrel Wilkins for 25 and England are 87 for seven and going to look as if he didn't believe it see what he does is this one better terrific melt he's got everything up and he's caught both eyes rival is whole net peeping in the air and Truman is out porthole bill games before of England now 93 for eight Sobers coming up that's it he's hard LBW and that gives his third wicked and tippins's out ldw well gets in for 33 England 172 for nine locked both physically all out 174 Griffith followed with another nine at The Oval six 471 in the first innings and here he is now bowling - Ted Dexter what a fine return catch by big Charlie Griffith it's the end of Ted Dexter and this is the new ball which Griffiths got now and they're calling up a few more slips right across it and over it and closed his eyes though with a new bowl pitch he got 446 England 216 rivets to shop and he's gone behind Joba doctor fix the free and you have the torque of the 24 for six there goes for Truman team buh-bye big Charlie Griffith out for 19 in England a 252 for 7 he caught up his brow can I has he been given out I believe means being given out it was a really vicious as simple a given image we think he's been given out by say puller that delivery by Johnny Griffith just about as vicious as anything I could remember being seen bold against another polar collared immediately on another conference between Charlie Griffith came back to his mark and was all it did bid on and that is caught by landscapers bonuses out ports kids bold Tobi's in virgin olive oil Oh Edwige his poor family of Griffith for 12 and England once again this game suddenly swings 31 to Charlie Griffin wondering what Bandhan is going to do do next what's he going to do to Barrington he's coming out my dusty roads tonight before just the one scoring strip he's had a good series for England primary mill servers so it's trying to cover the parks and he asked Robin of these be given out yes it looked out from here he was back on the back court he came back probably would have hit middle and legs something like that so Charlie Griffith is struck again cute boxes out 223 he's caught by service at second snip human is our pork service the whole five in England a hundred of 96 for seven and how do I get the card on and has lost first ball from home no criminal I'm the prodigal again the middle England's last man Derrick Akal tea these pose buh-bye Mario got the record number of victims in the test series and his Chum has come out in the crowd to congratulate West Indies won the series 3-1 triumph or that great cricketer Frank Worrell who retired after the oval match his career spanned both the 50s and the 60s he is not only a wonderful batsman but a great captain and leader of men and molder of teams
