Cricket The 60s Part 1

in 60s was a memorable era for me as a player and the commentator witness and Marvis cricketing events and played alongside some great players in that decade among them Freddy Truman and Ted Dexter and Kenny Barrington of England in the West Indies West Hall and Garfield Sobers Lance Gibbs and Rowan Kenai South Africa Graham Pollock and in Australia Neil Harvey and Alan Davidson and many others as well well for the purposes of this video we've researched the BBC archives to find as much good quality stuff as we can for incidents and players now bear in mind that the actual quality of the film in the 1960s wasn't as good as the 70s that wasn't as good as the 80s and now we're into the 90s which is very much better sometimes we don't even have a complete sequence but I can guarantee you that just a glimpse of these great players and the incidence is well worth having on your video first though let's have a look back at another era back to the 50s 1956 to be exact and Old Trafford and Jim Laker a unique cricket match there was a series where Ian Johnson skip at Australia first test at Trent Bridge was drawn the second was a smashing win / Australia on a green top at Lord's and the third was a dress rehearsal for Laker and lock they played it Headingley and they got 18 wickets in that match so on to Manchester England made 459 and in the 10th over of the Australian innings Jim Laker came on to create cricket history and this is the amazing film story of how Jim Laker balls Australia first ago is common McDonald he's waiting and emili´s davis has given him out yes I thought of it by bowling Ian Johnson and so takes nine wickets for 37 runs something no Englishman has ever done before against Australia and as Australia follow-on laker is at it again once more it's party bold Laker the next day during a brief spell in play it's buck gold Laker it's Burt go fight lock rain Rob's Laker of further glory but on the last day he's back and craves out gold Laker yes I stink anywhere it's the sporting performance of the year after draw at The Oval England won that series 2-1 in the period up to 1960 England were unbeaten at home there was a drawn series then in South Africa to all the three new win against the West Indies for nil over New Zealand and in 1959 victories in all five tests against the Indians overseas they lost to Australia in 58 9 that was four nil but they beat West Indies in 59 60 with a single victory in Trinidad in 1960 the run continued with a three nil win over South Africa and the following year Australia returned when I was Captain after draw dad's Boston Neil Harvey took over at Lord's for what turned out to be a heart-stopping victory then came Fred Truman's match at Headingley and what a performance on an interesting-looking pitch a straighter won the toss and battered England gained what was a useful first innings lead and then Fred in the Australian second innings took five four none in 24 balls here he is now at the start of that spell he bowls to Neil Harvey who's on 53 2 and Alonso to Hardy and he's caught at cover point by dick stop are they out for next up both Tillman for 53 of failure 99 of 331 runs on ellentube between the two countries in 1962 where Tom gravely made a comeback her again there was no greater pleasure in cricket playing or watching than to be there when grave knee was at his elegant best he England's Fred Truman he was five or 62 gave him than the chance to win the match and take a one-nil lead in the series Bob Simpsons the batsman here feeling the full effect of Truman's control of pace and swing Simpson is out 4:14 the first Australian wicket Falls at 30 but when O'Neil comes in to bat versus to follow Truman with his tail right up has O'Neill edging and Qadri slip catch lowdown as a gem it's a great personal achievement for Freddie truman and Colin Qadri to dismiss Simpson O'Neal without addition to the score venno edges and is superbly caught by cadre at first slip so it's still six runs to go and two balls and Qadri with one hand is going to come in well he didn't win the race there Shackleton David Allen was up to him very quickly I don't think he realized stroke that's going right up for four right up to long on nice stroke you won't go to the boundary though Lance Gibbs chasing it is - Dexter what a good stroke that's coming absolutely dead straight and will run down before the pavilion that's his third drive of the morning and Laurie gray I'm powering his second Test match oh very up his shot indeed but fortunately for Dexter safe and it put up puts up the 50 there's Ted Dexter with 29 just me hope for England's sake getting into his stride I'll stare out there the fatal thing to say Dennis yes I'm trade he played that one oh he's playing
