I enjoyed it thoroughly when we got a new Kate I loved the color of that kid and when I got a tracksuits they were beautiful as well it was something very different it was something very festive for me as a player something very new for me as a player and as opposed for every team as well [Music] [Applause] the Melbourne Cricket Ground one of the most iconic sports venues in the world and host of the 1992 Cricket World Cup final between England and Pakistan what a magnificent start to this marvelous death cream the World Cup final 1992 the MCG staged the final match of a Cricket World Cup that had been dramatic and exciting closely fought matches spectators in tens of thousands and innovations that catapulted cricket into the modern day era [Music] well it was Creek entertainment wasn't it it was cricket appealing to the masses the white ball the black site screens it was color it was it was palladium it was fantastic it's what cricket needed and it delivered crowds were great that's some good matches what's really unusual in one of the best places in my opinion my opinion to pick of it at the 1992 World Cup had everything even had a decent song [Music] and you Watson it was the Cricket World Cup that changed the one day game innovations to make the matches more exciting more competitive and easy on the eye for the players and fans alike the interest that was created was massive where the interest for the game just took off and it went through the roof whenever we see the footage he I you to start feeling yeah that was a great time the fifth Cricket World Cup launched facets of the game known and loved today coloured clothing white cricket balls black side screens and day/night matches the tournament held for the first time in Australia in New Zealand truly had a feeling of something different it was very exciting for me as a young cricketer getting into the world cup of white balls colour clothing and the black side screen it took me some time to get used to the white ball to control the white balls because it's a lot more than the red balls especially first 15 to 20 years 9 teams faced each other once in a round-robin group with the top four teams progressing to semifinals and eventual final expectations were high for the hosts Australia who were the reigning champions having won in India in 1987 time greats Richie Benaud well the World Cup is the pinnacle Twyman all cricketers globally that's a chance for us all to come together and form of our countries against all the best players from all the other countries India was also amongst the favorites having won the Cricket World Cup nine years earlier on English soil four years previously their showing was also strong at the 1987 Cricket World Cup expectations were high [Applause] [Music] having won the World Cup once but then had he taken to one day cricket could make changes they told they had a good young team dad then okay then young Tendulkar coming up other than his captain and so on and they were really quite confident going to Australia England arrived with a strong and experienced squad with strengthen both batting and bowling Pakistan were led by Imran Khan and his steely determination to succeed during the final chance of his career Sri Lanka in Zimbabwe were the new emerging nations and then there was South Africa reinstated into international cricket after the end of apartheid in 1990 [Applause] [Music] I'd Linda fight to keep them out of it no that would send the end of apartheid and I had genuine democratic government there it was marvelous to see them back in the fold and I've always been a significant force in world cricket since South Africa was led by Kepler vessels who'd played 24 tests for Australia during the apartheid era he joined a short list of cricketers to play for two countries being pulled up to that 92 World Cup because we knew quite a long time before we actually went that we were gonna go so there was an enormous bulla and there quite a tennis ball that I must admit the fact that we were there after 27 years of sport in isolation was almost good enough in a way that took pressure off us so first to perform was just a bonus [Music] this was the Cricket World Cup played as the league with all nine teams facing each other once in the qualifying round robin stage first up in the opening game with the hosts Australian New Zealand playing at a packed Eden Park New Zealand won the toss and chose to bat getting off to the worst possible start [Music] I believe in folded through wisely struck that look to me as if that ball hit the inside of the batter then came back one of the studs the alarm bells hadn't rung with me in leader really at the fact that we're playing New Zealand in New Zealand we could get hijacked here at 3 453 New Zealand was struggling and needed inspiration from their captain Martin Crowe and he delivered to read back and he's got it down between two fielders Martin Crowe is is one of the great cricket thinkers one of the few people that I've known in cricket who can see into the future Crowe introduced spin with the new ball and then great match was introduced as a pinch-hitter against the new balls crows batting so organized technically but so adaptable so able to play one-day cricket as instinctively as he was to play Test match cricket fragmented oh what a glorious shot Crowe fought the Australian attack that his partners felled regularly during this extraordinary innings as New Zealand approached 200 at Chris Harris run-out could have jeopardized their chances or chance runner is gone the Harris we're thinking by crow he kept coming once again at corner that cover position makes a bright side mother run out of his time Chris Harris we knew that meant for men they're probably better cricket team than us they've proven it time and time again but we also knew that we had eaten Parker parsley New Zealand still had Martin Crowe at the crease who kept on coming at Australia and with 99 on the board he gave the home crowd at Eden Park what they wanted a century [Applause] your best batsmen should place as many deliveries as possible in all honesty and that way he can control the game and he was our controller he had that ability just to work the ball around he ran well between the wickets you know he was the real package New Zealand's score of 248 gave Australia a real challenge thanks mainly to Martin Crowes master class he made sure it wasn't about an individual hundred officer making sure that we got a credible title to say to Australia are you good enough as Australia began their innings Martin Crowe unleashed his off spin a Deepak Patel to open the bowling a surprise tactic in one-day cricket no it was a fantastic innovation that Martin Crowe and Warren Lee's came up with it was certainly very unexpected he's right out off spinner Martin Crowe is captain of New Zealand was the first innovative captain that bold a spinner to open the bowling and that sort of took a couple of hours to get used to what do we do here do we attack him do we working around what what we've never seen this before Australia's openness began well but Jeff mass was dismissed with the score on 62 with the 45-foot when you're losing wickets it's different wonder create because every time that happens your momentum slows again Dean Jones then stepped in adding 30 runs quickly to mount pressure on New Zealand have picked up the run rate for Australia there Jonesy you know he was a go-to man really and one that create he'd played well for unfortunate got himself out and then of course we hit it was a submerged log from there but the pressure on the New Zealand feel this the short bound really didn't travel he's on his way Australia did not look comfortable and soon lost their captain Alan border border does take some risk near that the fields been in the air we just put too much pressure on ourselves my loser wins in the middle order I never blind the tail when you get into those circumstances it's more you know what should have been done we got a reasonable start at the top of the order the middle order just fill away at which I was once over and up down but not out David Boone kept Australia's hopes alive with an excellent hundred every century been a very good ending for Australia whilst he's always got a gritty little player like David Boone at the crease you're always worried because in one day create you need one guy to stay and you can bet around them and boom he set himself the task of doing that but with the straighter on.200 Boone was run out by Chris Harris and New Zealand sensed an upset [Applause] that's where the game changed we felt comfortable after that once we got burning out we felt that you know we could go on and what they put the pressure on our tile which that we left them too much to do so you can't blame them for you know the wickets for you you know you know in a rush of the air in the air and that's gone so you may well be Australia greed is hit in the air that's the end of the game that's it 30,000 new zealand supporters a fair percentage of them are going to make a - to congratulate their team as they head off the ground but was euphoric inside the dressing room it was WOW do we just sort of do that you know if we just caused the biggest upset of the World Cup on day one a great tournament opener we'd set the precedent for a month of dramatic and exciting cricket action for both players and fans across the world it was great it was just exciting you know I mean in Australia Day night cricket floodlights sign again that could be six that's a big one hit we were going happy to wear anything that was representing South Africa we weren't fussy I think these days the guys are must be tight-fitting in this and that there we just wants to play it was something very different it was something very festive for me as a player it was fun all around [Applause] [Music] the 1992 Cricket World Cup started with the defeat of Australia by New Zealand in Auckland a day later England was up against India and expectations were high for both sides for one cricket legend the tournament's new formats and innovations were improving the spectacle of the game [Applause] one day cricket is different to test for it so why shouldn't you then with colored clothing the white ball and if you're going to played a night games if you did the white ball makes so much sense so yeah it was just a snow the step in the direction some innovations were coming from the teams themselves with players like both am opening the batting as pinch hitters I've been banging on the door to open for quite some time and I felt that batting at six six down the order quite often you went in for the last couple of overs if you were playing well and if you weren't you were playing badly is a number six gets used to then you go out there and use it backs to the wall stuff with the tail so I said that I'd love to have a go I got the opportunity I think it went pretty well against India Bothan was out for nine but better results would come from his new role in England's next matches Graham Gooch combined with Robin Smith in a 120 run partnership as England put the pressure on India I remember Robin Smith hit in one of the biggest sixes I've ever seen [Music] must Robin Smith's innings of ninety-one was the cornerstone of England's final score of 236 England had made their statement we got the start we wanted to know India a dangerous side you know there's some quality players up see Tendulkar was around then and Kapil Dev paid you know so you never know India struck back with an opening partnership of 63 between Ravi Shastri and Chris free Kent later Sachin Tendulkar's impressive 35 made an important contribution to the innings we were very much in faxes we didn't really play as well as we should have we had the experience during that period we had everything but it just wasn't coming on our side take any chances runs in takes the bales off himself it was a close finish with India's final score of 227 nine runs short of England's 236 India had looked tired having been away from home for a considerable time he went three three-and-a-half months on a tour of Australia we've not done that well in the Test match series you know you're plagued with injuries you know then you can have problems but having said that you know I still thought India you know had a pretty good team to go the distance after that to fate India recovered by baiting Sri Lanka and then faced us trailer at the Gabba in Brisbane in one of the most exciting matches so far in the tournament [Applause] starting well Kapil Dev struck early and had a Strider on - for thirty-one I always thought again he's dragged the bar back under east answers winning the World Cup is you start playing well somewhere during the tournament a David Byrne and Dean Jones partnership steadied the Australian innings the middle order providing a much-needed recovery we went to the game that was a must-win for us you know the planning and the preparation we're as good as it can get this was a match India had to win but the pressure for Australia at home was also proving hard to handle I don't think we went in there with huge confidence like we have done in other World Cups where we're thinking you know if we get it right you know there's not too many teams that can stand in our way we've gone for that one this is in the air this could be it is Oh [Applause] in court with the straggler on 235 Allen border was Kapil Dev third wicket prompting a collapse of the Australian Tales do so that's a run-out walking off the ground you sort of think we've made 237 yeah that's that's an offender will score in my opinion at that ground yeah you always walk off thinking I'd like a few more but you're comfortable in reply India's openers Chris recant and Ravi Shastri went cheaply in partnerships with Sachin Tendulkar and Kapil Dev the captain Mohammed Azharuddin settled the Indian innings and I started to look impressive when you had such stars you know like other and well Kapil was there and of course you had such an whose you know burst on to the international scene so yeah there was certain expectations but cricketing is like that you know some days you're up and some days you're not lighter as a routine went for 93 K was followed by sanjay mins Rekha it made the Australian attack sweat before he went for 47 he's gonna be out Charlie hey Jeremy dragon that could be the end [Applause] right [Applause] after Pro Barca was run out the game went down to the last ball of the match India needed four runs to win well I suppose you boys thinking that hitting a boundary that can be done we first hit that you think on your part your mouth Hobie takes the cash good throw over stunning i imagining it 1/2 or yeah interrupt the cats but the sale was good enough when the father was not fast enough misako one one time the feelings after that match probably more relief than anything else that you were back in them in the tournament albeit just India had lost and was eventually knocked out of the Cricket World Cup losing three more matches I take it it was a case of being in Australia for too long I don't think they were confident they were a demoralized lot at that stage and therefore it was no real surprise that they weren't even able to qualify having won unexpectedly in 83 they were very high expectation and the country went through quite a depressed phase after 92 India's neighbours and rivals Pakistan arrived in Australia lean and mean under the leadership of their inspirational captain Imran Khan we were the first team to learn in Australia we played something like ten matches before and I think that is where Imran was so clever because he wanted to see how the players will shape up to this strange environment because Australia gets to your system Pakistan's record in the round-robin was inconsistent they lost to the West Indies in their opening game but then went on to beat Zimbabwe next up was England in a game they had to win the Pakistan match always comes into question because we play the ad laid in very um I've laid conditions dark dank and the ball moved around them and our medium pace and pace boulders boulder Pakistan out I think just over 70 runs bit of gas overcast condition the ball was sealing around hand 70 food all out and I thought as a youngster okay that's it for us for this World Cup there were I'd be losing em and then divine intervention and they were Saved by the Bell and either games at one point each and eventually that point one point help us to qualify for the semi-finals against New Zealand that met with save Pakistan in fact they won the World Cup for them that point saved Pakistan's campaign and helped them qualify for the semi-finals at the expense of Australia I remember him not telling me or telling the team at that they said look this is God helping us Australia's Cricket World Cup campaign was not going to plan having lost their first two games and then defeated India by only one run two weeks into the tournament they faced England and Ian both them something about Australia brings the best out of these three always did he just loves taking on the Aussies and beating them both of them striking no I wasn't the hungry simply because I had a back injury and then coming back from that surgery I've never gonna be the same cricketer but I still could do a job Australia had lost four wickets but their skipper out on border was settling in Graham Gooch turned to the one player he knew could make a difference Ian both well the great falls out of Boulder if I remember Nick Wambach was having a girl in bold poly and he gave us this little shuffling dance and they did a strange little thing there yes I did I thought what that was yeah I enjoyed it and also around the opposition and I just like one in the oppositional and that's what they loved him so much both enrolled as a pinch-hitter was finally a revelation he scored 53 as Australia's attack desperately tried to pin back England's run rate is the sort of thing that both do to try and annoy the Australian bowlers throughout North Korea if some players have the wood over teams and Ian always reserved these best performances for Australia we've got four wickets in that match if I remember as you say took out the captain and took out the heart of the Australian team that's 53 and both them both them eventually out for 53 but the damage was done and Australia's chances of reaching the semi-finals were in jeopardy the Pakistan South Africa game was one of the most memorable matches of the tournament not because of the contest but for one special moment the South Africa Pakistan match in Brisbane really grabbed the imagination of the South African fabric and it always goes back to the Jonty Rhodes dive we had literally two games left of which we had to win both to qualified we met at first it wasn't all from a batting point of view that easy not easy at all skipper vessels dismissed for seven runs with South Africa on 31 oh that's our caught behind surely a here our that's gotta be out the strategy for one that we invent was totally different to what it is now for me it was pretty much a build for the first 15 I was trying not lose wicked serve around 60 after 15 and then because he used two white balls reverse swing didn't really come into it so you're you're attacking overs were from say over 35 to 50 with wickets in hand so that that was how the game is played South Africa was for 411 after mark rush Muir was caught off moosh dark army the same balls got some swing there was like a lot of balance available post-tax and the game was under knifefish right throughout on a lively wicked south africa pushed on to a total of 198 with just six wickets down oh that should have been caught it's gone straight to his hands and this sort of fielding must be driving in Ron man South Africa eventually scored 211 from their full 50 overs but was it enough we were probably 20 or 30 runs short in the last couple of hours because we had literally had no idea where the ball was been bought Dave Richardson walked off and just went sorry guys I must have looked stupid but I didn't know where the ball was going South Africa had to attack Pakistan's openers to have any chance of progressing further in the tournament their attack was making an impression in a match they had to win we played really well in defending that type of Bowl all the fuel in law we realized the strength of the South African team you know especially their bullying because the conditions suited them really well in zoom Amal Huck was Pakistan's new batting sensation at the 1992 Cricket World Cup young and hungry his batting could turn a game quickly that's apparent Terrapin can't get its support strength in Zoo mom had just entered international arena and in bronze straight away picked him as another match winner Imran Khan's instincts were correct and his young protégé took on the South African attack with a partnership of 85 alongside his captain Imran Khan in the mum and Imran Khan were betting really well together they were achieving the required rate and for us all was that you know we needed a wicket quite desperately punished by the brilliance of youth flair and experience South Africa needed a breakthrough into man could be run out and Rhodes has demolished the stands the run head was was a typical jaunty rice runner I was running towards the wicket tooked over my laces and some guy took a great picture almost feline low center of gravity better man you could not find in junkie roads there's quite a lumbering runner so I backed myself to to beat him to the crease Jonty Rhodes knew there was a chance decided not to throw suddenly I see at the corner of my eye that he was getting home quicker than I'd anticipated so for me the fastest way to get to the stumps over those last two meters was through the air he gets there first and wipes everything out it's like the greatest cricketing moments of all time you know that dibbs a mom ran out was the turning point and I've probably turned the game around Pakistan's batting collapsed after Inza man was run out and they eventually lost to South Africa in a rain effected match by 20 runs South Africa went on to qualify for the semi-finals winning two of their remaining three matches they joined New Zealand who topped the table by winning seven of their eight matches and England joined them after their solid campaign of five wins and two losses Pakistan made up the final four by winning all of their remaining three matches qualifying by one point ahead of Australia and the West Indies it was exciting I thought was brilliantly organized in Australia every team played each other once first in the top four went through I thought that was a very fair way of format in the tournament so if you finish in the top four out of those seven games you deserve to be in the semi-final [Music] semi-final was one of them greatest met that I've covered in one day Krieger against New Zealand V Pakistani at the time you always very confident that we can beat them well Imran cam it was he make from the head I keep Javed I had Pais the Cricket World Cup had now reached the semi-final stage and New Zealand the winners of seven out of eight round-robin matches faced Pakistan from then on Pakistan was Pakistan the real Pakistan under Imran Khan it's going to be a great battle right was inequity was very simply comes in for the first ball 75 [Applause] we knew that any team playing at home and if the only winning streak the bound to lose one because there's so much pressure on them expectations are so high [Music] swing-and-a-miss well there's the nervous remark right patch he's been the style of the bat for New Zealand one with Matt and pro they were players within the earth we knew that could hurt us but could they handle the pressure you know could we be being if we posted a score could we defender Matt gray pitch was a bit of a deep to us because he was so punishing and he was so damaging to the opposition and you could see when you lose key players the opposition's reaction today my great match was sensational during that 92 World Cup we're quite afraid of his of his caliber and and the form that he was in but he was undone by a beautiful slow delivery by our killer the match didn't start well for New Zealand having lost two openers for 39 runs and it was time for Captain Martin Crowe to shine beautiful stroke he just waited on it Matt Groening's is simply outstanding I mean best player on the biggest occasion and he did it again and this was Imran Khan this was was he mad cream this is a pretty damn good bowling attack that he manufactured around that ball here absolutely fearless and rising to the occasion we run some more there as four runs in Aaron Martin Pro sort of formats champions play the best game when it matters most and what a game we played in fact right throughout the world cuddles outstanding that's gone into the stand yes woman cries sit [Applause] shorter boundaries New Zealand's run-rate gathered pace under the partnership of pro and ken Rutherford who led a merciless onslaught against the Pakistan attack this is a tremendous partnership building up here they really did build this understanding of how to have momentum and what we needed to be competitive what we needed to win and into the gap and no third man that'll be fair [Applause] in the midst of his innings Martin Crowe became injured but carried on with a runner had he pushed himself too far during the tournament Martin Crowe pulled a hamstring and we didn't know to what extent how bad it was but it was to the point where he needed a runner and whether that was the stress of having bettered so long so often on the tournament had come to pass and that was just too much for his body to handle of course we'll never know but the fact of the matter is he did Crow's heroic innings of 91 put his team right back into the match eventually he'd go on to be voted undisputed man of the series outstanding innings there was a player that I liked after Viv Richards it would be Martin Crowe because Martin Crowe was technically so good sidon stylish player and he would take on on the opposition take on fast bowling like nobody else during his era he was outstanding and what a knock he played I mean you know hitting was seen for six oversquare leg was a special shot [Applause] sex they played hard nothing's best thing happened for us Martin Road got injured while batting was 90 odd and then he got injured and that helped to cause it separate for 261 Gavin Larson and Ian Smith was still there as New Zealand reached 262 per 50 overs game on [Music] it was 30 more than we thought we needed and we were pretty confident going into the halftime break except I'd pulled hamstring and I had to tell the team that if I was to play in Melbourne I had to put my you know put my hammy up and try and rest it and basically 72 hours and therefore John Wright had to go out and kept in the side 262 was a big chase for Pakistan but Inman can not impressed and told his team to dig deep we gave a speech the boys said look you've got to strike back like a cornered tiger a goner tiger is the one within attacks defining moment Imran Khan says to his team commas and fight fight cornered times and they'd see Martin Crowes tournament innovation of having spin bowler dip back to tell open the bowling paid off almost immediately against Pakistan we'd realized that we had to come up with something different Warren Lee's had left a bit bored and bring evils in my room and Sid notes that and will tweak with him and see see how you feel however not one to be outdone by tactics Emran can't came up with an innovation of his own nimrod made that massive decision to promote himself up the automatic at number three imagine a captain making that decision in the semi-final of the World Cup he wanted to make a statement this is me this is my time and I'm gonna win this World Cup for us I see well let's hit hard down to third man [Applause] you know if you don't disguise it well enough those guys are leaked it for breakfast and lunch and dinner and he did and he played some great shots little bit sometimes you know probably them quite mean to place at that finer the third man or whatever but hey when it's your day you're rock and rollin it's very very firmly structured on pushed up by Danny Morrison family's dad you're not really meeting to move his feet much certainly not deciding to I was working away nicely with Imran and we got a partnership going and Imran I think was the first time they did he was batting you Oh this time Danny Morrison dropping short and his rather in complete control of the shop we needed aggression upfront because in those days to get a total of 260 was extremely steep in modern day times it'd be like getting a 300 target so we had to get going straight away which we did we thought to ourselves well we only have to get rid of these guys only have to get rid of one of these we only have to open one end up but I'm voice' we keep saying it for about thirty five overs you know and and and that makes a tutor that's coming back for it could be a good catch it is yes it was a good innings it could have been lot better and I've played one in the air against the wind and Danny Morrison took a very very good catch actually I distinctly remember going I knew that that era of real confidence of saying we're on our way to Melvin Rama's Raja went for 44 with his team to 484 the tactic of holding and getting the innings established had worked they were led by Imran Khan now that's power you know when um Ryan speaks everyone sort of listens and and he he ruled that team he went up and down the batting order because he backed himself to be the man betim too much into the terraces what a magnificent straight-6 that was you know you're playing 50 over cricket and it gets dominated by batsmen really and on that pitch was a bit like for a lot of those guys playing in Pakistan you know it was brown it was shaven it was pretty benign and pasted off the ball was ideal at that point Javed me and dad stepped in to partner Imran Khan good shot beautifully placed by the end but there was a problem with Pakistan's premier batsman a month or two before the World Cup he got used to eating betel nuts and chewing tobacco which really damages inside the membrane off his stomach every time he ran a single or a couple of runs he would couch on the ground he will get hold of the handle of the bat and he always looked in pain Imran Khan was eventually caught by Chris Harris his impact on the match had been huge and cued Javed main dared to join in zoomable Hawks in a match winning partnership in salmon was struggling I think early on in the world carry batteries number three but in Ron and we all knew how great talent he is so Umbreon said okay instead of him batting at number three I'll go at number three he should come at number five or six because then ball will be the slightly older and he able to kill me he showed in that semi-final the inning he played about 50 or of 30 balls and he won us a game out of nowhere between the two fielders just four and the sky is a dangerous batsman this maze mr. mayor babe you got media data in that match when I was batting Imran advised me to play my natural game so I played my natural game Javed he was at the other end told me to defend a few as well and occupy the crease he was the senior player in 1992 he knew clearly did you walk in a plane to do my job you killed to be so low with it it's gone right over that fielder for a moment the way he played dealings you know it was total aggression sensational hitting against the wind you know wind can be a real problem for bowlers and batsmen in New Zealand but you know he just took it took it to a different level enzym enzyme that innings brilliant in the mammal Hawk played the innings of his life but it nearly didn't happen but for the brilliant captaincy of Imran Khan at four NZ was throwing up all the night before he didn't want to go and bat he's got that one away right into the middle of the gap for so it was a big blog because Imran always felt that in Zee had the talent to pull it off I think the odds are certainly in favor of Pakistan at the moment everyone had basically to force him Braun wrote down the playing eleven without the name of Inzamam hawk just as he was about ten yards outside the dressing room came back again and and asked in zu7 bit Oscar Nikolai Ehlers negative merit ability through mercy for Abu he loved he said to me that no matter how sick you are feeling you have to play my of course obliged I took a few breaks during my innings against New Zealand to help me but to begin with I didn't think I'd be playing at all but everyone had confidence in me and he thought if I scored our team would win we gave Ron Baker you select confidence committed beautiful DVD Jaeger score gotta get over a team energy 60 year Pakistan was on for for 227 when in zaman was run out [Applause] that was a crucial body blow to us that he came out and did it so quickly airport pressure air bolus with ahead and head pressure have made us changed the bowling plans which we had done before in the brilliance was now in sight my job and against Pakistan and xme finally they just wanted it more a dad gamer feel too late I think I couldn't sleep for about couple of days opportunity to sell for instance shell-shocked that we have qualified for the finals Pakistan was through to their first ever Cricket World Cup final for their captain the ambition to win it went beyond the sport that he loved my motivation was not personal ambitions or you know person success my my driving force was that I we needed to win the World Cup to build the Cancer Hospital [Music] the second semi-final of the 1992 Cricket World Cup took place at the famous Sydney Cricket Ground for the South African team and had been a journey of great pride and joy there was incredible thing about playing in 1992 even though there wasn't yet a democracy there was so much support from the entire country the reception from everybody across all cultures and races was incredible and I think that support had been throughout the tournament [Music] apartheid had kept South Africa out of international sport for two decades the man who played an influential role in ending apartheid was the former Australian Prime Minister Bob Hawke I think the fact that we did lead the fight against a power load and I recognised the role of a straight I think that gives them a feeling of particular warmth towards Australia so there is I think underlying Eve it's not even was not openly expressed I think there's an underlying affection for Australia because of that and we both play now aggressive cricket and attractive triggered it was an exciting time for South Africa now back playing international cricket their team was led by Kepler vessels at the 1992 ICC Cricket World Cup well a very special time from a South African sporting point of view back for the first time after so many years into a big international event so it was daunting at the same time but it was also very excited no one knew much would be at the South African team per se going into the night cup we knew your favorite about kepler vessels I know me personally I played with Kepler here in Queens and obviously for Australia for number number of years I knew that they'd be a very well-prepared and disciplined don't Korea team the South Africans lit up the round-robin stage winning five of their eight matches the highlight being Jonty Rhodes unforgettable run out of Inza Marmol Huck I'm not interested in term and could be run out and junkie Rhodes has demolished this dance well we started really well and once we've beaten Pakistan we beat sabab where and we were really we're really on a roll welcome to the hcg for this second semi between England and South Africa Kepler not too worried about the rhyme it is a calculated risk but you know if it rains while we're bowling it's not too bad as a problem comes if you're buried tonight that rose it'll be a good game weather conditions look a bit suspect but don't worry about now you gotta get on with it in the air and why there if had have been a third slip you would have taken a catch how about a good delivery we didn't have a vase day at the tournament I won the toss under helpful the conditions decided to ball first which which was a good decision but we just weren't as good as we were the ball during at different times in that tournament good shot straight down the ground that's what is there for England's openers settled in early with Ian Botham enjoying his role as a pinch-hitter send out to get on with it it was an aging team who were fewer was getting well I was certainly well into the twilight of my career the back end the body was finished but I still could do a job so yeah I enjoyed it oh well Paul being appeal if o'clock behind has given him out he's given him out that didn't look back Gooch is on his way it was a tight game saffet always tough to beat you at very competitive in your face type cricketers South Africa rattled Ian Botham who lost his wicket not long after Graham Gooch England was in trouble early in their innings at 39 4 to Graham hit then stepped in and got a lucky call temple of missiles nearly had a heart attack there at firstly we involved a few wide feet no balls one of those Nobles resulted in me catching Gromack at first look when he was on nought so that was very expensive a mistake that costs us cost us dearly it was tough luck Hicks partnership of 71 with Alex Stewart help push England's run right up and gave them the advantage into the net straight over 20 roses here got him brilliantly done Alex Stewart was dismissed for 33 I always felt we were winning that game that was a thing and what people do forget is that South Africa slow down they're overweight when they were bowling and I think nanny Bowl is it 45 46 O's top whack South Africa's slow run rate didn't deter England's middle order who scored impressively to keep their run right up so I think we had a pretty decent attack Graham hick really played well and there weren't many people scoring at a strike rate of close to a hundred in limited overs cricket and way back in 1992 we weren't expecting boy Lamar for 200 I mean they were a good England were a good side if they got going you bet there was that lovely touch of clash about his play no better example than that stroke away for extra pay South Africa's slow over rate continued as he was dismissed for 83 Chompy roads in the way anything close to him is going to be more down as he eventually at 6:10 p.m. the scheduled close of play for the first innings the players were called off the field after 45 overs it's gone again that could be sex that's a big long hit just bounces over the fan spread over 3 two-fifty was a good score and with a good bowl inside you know with our variety and our fielding was good as well we thought we would protect that so we were confident and the players coming off the ground after 45 hours that's a disappointing aspect you say 45 hours but I've done very well six for 252 then I still felt that we restricted England to a total that we could get and our run-chase our ranches wasn't a bad one we were sort of on target rain was always gonna be a problem those words proved ominous as South Africa began their run chase welcome back to the fcg well we've got a game on our hands here that even though they were only permitted 45 overs by the South African six for 250 to England that's a terrific score and I can tell you it we know easy target for the South Africans to reach [Music] [Applause] England's first breakthrough came when Kepler vessels was dismissed with South Africa's score on 26 he's gone that's the negative thing we wanted professors up to 17 it's one forensic England supporters who were getting a name for themselves as the balmy army had more joy when Dangermond Peter Kirsten went next [Music] [Applause] Freitas as that day in German South Africa the big scorer in this World Cup Whitaker study is de Freitas with South Africa wobbling at to 461 England's fans went wild the Brahmi army actually probably started in during and that nineteen eight that World Cup in 1892 these guys follow us around all over straight down the square like it's gonna be out as well not a problem at all Graham hate glasses war isn't this wicked Jonty Rhodes stepped in to post South Africa's second highest score of 43 just when they needed it way to go down there finally I'll have to reach the boundary I got 40 odd in the game but I don't remember hard like them I slashed a couple over to have slips and inside aged a few timid wicked son ran really hard I mean it's a big it's a big field that's Sydney at the SE G and there was a lot of runs available I think we've been bogged down a bit in this sort of middle period so the run rate had gone up quite high [Music] [Applause] [Music] Rhodes was eventually out but South Africa was going steadily David Richardson joined Brian McMillan to maintain the momentum product but at the weekend David Richardson they were going quite well the game could have gone either way hey brother again throws why he said we had which were burning South Africa still in this match and the right guy when the situation is [Music] in the forty-third over at the end 42 South Africa would need 251 at the end of 43 South Africa would need 252 it was only 12 minutes of rain but it was enough to ruin South Africa's hopes of reaching the final in an incident that eventually led to the introduction of the Duckworth Lewis system as the rain started to fall I knew in trouble because I knew exactly how the calculation was going to go and that once we've been off the field for like 10 or 12 minutes whenever we went back in on we were getting stronger and that's exactly what happened which which is unfortunate when play resumed South Africa's batsman Brian McMillan and Dave Richardson were confronted by this score but has gone up that South African 820 did win from 7 balls there was confusion even the school board and the in Chapel has some further information yes Ritchie yeah we got a strange situation here because Alan Jordan has just come back to me and said that the the umpires have come back to him and they've changed it to say that there was only one ball remaining one-day cricket as you know there's a time span for it as time allocated and you can't go over that time of course when it came to the end of the match when it was really close and there was a bit of a rain delay and whatever and the recalculation come out and they wanted 22 off one ball everyone said what ridiculous rain delay but people do forget what happened earlier in the game we're now under pressure they slowed it down the peons have no sympathies for self because they use it as a tactic they're entitled to do that and did it penalize mini and probably crystal delivery pushed away to midwicket he was saying all the players are disappointed with the end the prayer the semi cricket ground so in the team run in the disappointing philia still wonderful match the supported by macmillan kepler vessels the manager ray Jordan and their South if it's a pipe very well we aimed the weather beat them well the end of the match was very emotional it was the end of a two-month stint of full of pressure and full of highlights and a few disappointments as well so for it to come down to what was an altitude 22 runs of one delivery was was naturally devastated I thought you thing I really remember was Marik Pringle standing on side of the sort of outside the dressing room at the scg holding the Bannister and tears literally he was crying South Africa they got to the semi-final they told everybody were back and we're here to stay and they played the game with a lot of flair a lot of thought and they were a definite plus point for world cricket and for that tournament England the victors here at the scg and the second semi-final of the Benson hitches World Cup of 1992 you say goodbye from the Sydney Cricket Ground England through to their second consecutive Cricket World Cup final [Music] all that stood between them was Imran Khan and his cornered Tigers when I got l-man and I think me and Pakistan team caught in fact the whole Pakistan thought of time the World Cup in us [Music] Melbourne Australia was the final destination for the 1992 Cricket World Cup the host city welcomed both the England and Pakistan teams after a dinner reception that didn't go quite to plan it was about 600 800 people there both teams there the night before the final compulsory it just wouldn't happen and it shouldn't happen then we went along to it and you're preoccupied you want all your thing about the final the next day and we're paraded in sat down and then in the wisdom of Korea Australia they decided to have this comedian oh that's funny is anyway I won't go into that my head started spinning anyways it ought to be there I'm thinking about the funnel I just said I don't need this and I got up and walked out myself really and obviously very proud of our heritage of our country of our Queen and all it stands for we thought it was completely in bad taste and we just got out when he was performing we just walked straight out I remember very clearly the Imran looked over the stage and had a bit of a chuckle saying look this only the Colonials on the left myself born in Barbados Deerman Reeve born in Hong Kong Chris Lewis born in Guyana Robert Smith will preserve his only convert the Colonials that was left there in a room out 10 minutes into this show as we went down the staircase to get in the cars to go to the ground for the final the world's press was oh good then Prime Minister Paul Keating and said well I don't like impersonators probably any more than the English cricketers day but it may not see a problem and I just turned said well my heritage my country like you we have a heritage and I'm only feel a bit better this was England's third World Cup final and Pakistan's first for both teams it was a nervous occasion I woke up early I had early night obviously to the worker finally you know you're not supposed to have a late night anyway it's a wanker final is the ultimate read for any sports person you try and treat it all said translator is just another game well it was more than just another game obviously because you don't get to meet World Cup Finals Pakistan's appearance add much to their inspirational captain Imran Khan his leadership and man management skills had gelled together a tight unit of committed and competitive players who had one goal to win the Cricket World Cup Imran was an extremely honest leader and picked the team on merit I was saying breakfast in the morning and I saw the newspaper I went straight to the sports page in the heading was I want was seen to ball fast I want him to ball Express and that was coming for him Ron hunt that gave me so much confidence as a young cricketer when Imran Pat you it meant you played when Imran said sorry you're not going to make it to the playing 11 we knew that even if we went anywhere for help will not get it because Imran was the last loss word on everything when he was the captain [Music] Kamran Khan had inspired his team to play like cornered Tigers throughout the tournament so you've got your tiger on again you want him to play like corner Tigers yes that's that that's the motto recently and they've done a great job you know they've played like Tigers especially the younger boys you know they haven't been overwrought by any situation to goddess in in the corner he said I want you to fight like this I said fight like what skipper he said find like corner Tigers you know what happens when Tiger gets cornered he attacks back Pakistan now faced England in the final at the famous Melbourne Cricket Ground led by Graeme Gooch England had been one of the strongest sides throughout the tournament we had a good team of experienced curriculars there was no novices in our team they'd all been playing for a number of years we had a lot of skill and depth [Music] we'll but I still remember Imran Khan telling us when you'd come out after doing the toss that the captain looked just a little bit nervous and it was gram good we're delighted to be here on to the full house at Melbourne our object to reach the World Cup final we obviously like to win it but we hope it's a good game of cricket the World Cup final 1992 88 fails into whatever it was at the MCG I'm not sure how many Australians are actually supporting England I think no probably more siding on the side of Pakistan because the Australian England rivalry anyway but we had good support we had really good support the match did not start well for Pakistan they were 2 for 24 when Derrick Pringle one of England's most consistent bowlers lined up Rama's Raja I felt you know with the two new balls that were swinging I was I was a threat and this always must feel that yes looked as though it had to be desperately close Steve Buckner took his time I still feel that the ball that hit me and got me out leg before wicket was a little high because they did my time I've seen it out about the height of the ball but Steve Buckner deciding the balls on target after that Pakistan's two most senior players Imran Khan the captain and his deputy Javed me and Ed Duggan quite frankly they'd been rivals there was no love loss at all it was deep mutual respect but also in definitely edge big edge when he tried to consolidate here that long partnership between Java and Imran it's such an extraordinary partnership they lose some early wickets and Java in one going along at one or two and over and carnal eyes himself a tried grin him and Mia that blocked blocked look this is a one day final obviously the idea was to have wickets in air during that partnership Derek pingel had two Appeals for LBW against Javed turned down there's another one which must be very close and the Englishmen are astonished this time as well was a brave decision hahaha yes he'll be W but he wasn't on your mouth when you appeal for no BW it looked out he looked out at the time as well I did figure pretty adjacent to against Javed but Steve but in the rule that they weren't you got to go with that decision sometime it works for you sometimes I don't it got worse for England when their captain Graham girge dropped Imran Khan's on 9 later he went on to score a crucial 72 runs a difficult warning the grand porch and sky de Bourgh to me at midwicket and I didn't get hand on it really which was a crucial moment in the game and the rubber the green and little brakes that you need to turn matches didn't go for us and it went for them the gutsy Javed continued to give crucial support in a brave innings before the start of a match he had ignored medical advice to play I think the doctors advised him not to play and yet because Mir doch being my dad he said no I will play no matter what happens for me at this time to the left Javed Miandad may be distrusts out there by illness but he still we're photos I mean he was struggling Imran was struggling he had a battle during during the World Cup he used to take injection in his shoulders painkillers and he bowled but again these guys were the true greats of the game he's got that one away beautifully nice and far before you know they turned the game million job in the end dad supreme street fighting batsmen a guy you'd you probably put your money on to bat for your life Javed's problem worsened during the innings so he had to call for a runner as he continued with Emran the partnership was worth a vital 139 runs before the sink Javed was out for 58 Javed has gone to the reverse sweep to both on a point gets the wicket and Javed Miandad who for the last half an hour or so others innings has been distressed and needed a runner those guys dug deep for their country and they put in the performance that made the difference with Javed gone semi final hero ace batsman and raw talent in zoom Armel Huck was again inspirational nzu seems was really the spirits of Pakistan that he at the time he had to come but he didn't have a good education unique he came from a very poor background he was the spirit and the quintessence he boiled an essence of what that is than cookie to that moment represented in zou mom's exciting bedding inspired the MCG crowd who really got behind him and once more for the Pakistanis is the man it was amazing how suddenly all these Australian supporters who bought tickets thing and their team was going to be in the final sorry about that we weren't William they actually suddenly all became Pakistani supporters so we felt well actually we thought we were playing Karachi I don't know that mcg but it was terrific atmosphere it was Ian Botham who ended Imran Khan's incredible innings of 72 with Pakistan at 4-4 a hundred and ninety-seven who is bonded so well [Applause] that really was the critical innings because that partnership got Pakistan first out of trouble and then allowed the likes of NZ and was a Makram to come and blast the opposition that's good hit that's going over why I've got 33 of 18 mg got 30-plus about 15 deliveries so in the end we got to 249 50 overs Pakistan are 6 or 249 Imran Khan had inspired his team with his batting now it was time for his bowlers to take the fight to England she was still able to galvanize those around him and in particular was he Mike Rann who he told not to worry about no balls just ball as fast as you can [Music] gone he's given both them in person I think I can say good fear of contradiction is far from impressed by that I was getting that caught behind of my shirt Pakistan crowd think it's marvelous finishing go right in that final [Music] [Applause] he's allowed appeal from Pakistan was he my friend given the benefit of the doubt then we got DC out I prepared anything I just heard the bit of noise I went to the appeal and so did the team I actually was quite furious and one of the best career bats I've had in my career a mattress smashed its splinters in dressing I got Nick's on me and both him and he still see as he did Nick it both up in their apartment press I was furious because she worked so hard for that money both 'im out for a duck and his last Cricket World Cup was soon followed by Alex Stuart [Music] [Applause] it was tough it was really tough and we got off to a slow start and their bowling attack was was pretty special I hope they could swing the swing the new ball well after the loss of both Graham hick and Bryan Gooch England there was 69 for for Neal Fairbrother and Adam lamb launched an impressive recovery so Imran Khan turned to his strike bowler Wasim Akram aza wicket-taker I did not want him to ball as a run container I wanted to use his or was to take wickets I remember that delivery I bowled to Allen lamb he was planned or two balls remember to white ballsy child and I think Quran said this partnership is building up to top on the players are batting so we need a wicket perhaps so to England at nine skills of them they you've you've got a marvel at those skills and those sort of little passages play turn the game better got Ellen then and I think me and Pakistan team caught and wake up the nice next up was Chris Lewis who stepped into was he Matt Graham's line of fire a defining moment in the match for the tournament's best bowler I wanted him to ball fast and to get us breakthroughs had a chat with him Donna Pradhan he said in swing Len still there subtract Lewis from that this was about drivers I can't figured Christmas when he bald in dipper quick one coming off the weekend so quick I think was Eve had that art I think he's the one of the best left um simpler I ever seen he ball fantastically well he was a good rhythm he was happy bowling quick and then his bowling with control as well it was a devastating spell that tore the England the middle order apart from then on there wasn't much resistance particularly after Neil Fairbrother was dismissed for a defiant 62 as a unit we clicked brilliantly and in in in important matches we got our egg together with Pakistan poised for victory Emran convolved the final ball of the 1992 Cricket World Cup performance because the greatest moment for Pakistan well a Pakistani prayers and prayer on the ground to give thanks for their victory after 15 years of being rivals representing different cultures and as this embrace between job Edinburgh if you read job ads wonderful very generous autobiography he says you know it was too deep for words it was beyond words what was going on between us [Music] 1992 World Cup he's been an outstanding success it's two ways of looking at disappointment reaching the final losing all three some pride only played in three we've reached the final in all three so he must've been doing something right if you want me to pick an image of our companies in Ronkonkoma trophy because that was a mission you mustn't drop it we had the best captain I plated that that I can promise you he believed in hard work and if you do hard work you've engine succeed that was in mantra and we followed a sponsor all the way to the Delta I would just like to say that I feel very proud that at the twilight of my career finally I managed to win the World Cup thank you [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] you
