celebrated authors throughout history have shared their secrets to writing from strict daily routines to creative and compulsive quirks I'm going to share five of my favorites with you and then show you how to cultivate a practice of your own blending old school customs with today's new tech bonus there will be brain scans and we'll talk about the best time of day to write first we have William Wordsworth a renowned English romantic who often found inspiration for his poems during long walks in nature I picked this one not because I am particularly like jazzed about William wesworth but more so because this is how I find most of my inspiration when I come up with ideas for my story for my plot lines my characters most of them are coming during my walks my long walks it's enjoyable for me to kind of have that time to unwind maybe listen to music and when I get going when I get moving my brain kind of follows in lock step and um sometimes I come up with something good next Emily Dickinson wrote most of her work late at night in the Solitude of her room Pablo naruda the Chilean Noble laurate was known to write in green ink as it symbolized hope and love for him not sure if this one's true but I do find it really interesting and Beyond poetry we have writers like Neil Gaiman who pens each initial manuscript with fountain pen I love that I think it's so cool that he actually takes the time to still hand write um his works and so many of them were started in that way and then he uploads everything to his computer and kind of gets cracking on editing and all of that but his first draft you know according to Neil by hand and the icon Sylvia Plath had a disciplined routine of writing every morning while her children were still asleep easier said than done I'm sure these diverse approaches to writing highlight the creativity of each poet's process each writer's process showcasing different ways in which writer's work can come to life but as Tech evolves there are lots of tools that can help us write poetry or longer works and compile all of that into a book or collection with ease today I'm focusing on poetry um because this is kind of what I've been writing in the mornings mostly and I want to show you how I've been using the remarkable to my my favorite new toy this tablet to write poetry in the mornings as a way to flex my brain get off my phone first thing in the morning and last thing at night before bed was one of the best things I've done for myself this year for my sanity that whole scrolling brain problem I'm not a doctor but this has helped me so much um with that tech neck issue that I was definitely dealing with not a doctor but just saying um getting off the blue light lasting at night it can definitely be helpful for people I'm working on building my novel throughout the day at different times and like I mentioned when I go on walks I usually get ideas and I'll run back home maybe pull up the manuscript right but mornings are mostly for random thoughts that I'd like to include in my newsletter or maybe a fresh poem or two to get the wheels turning this is saving me so much time and keeping me very organized especially compared to when I was writing my collection for self-publishing and trying to stay sane with all the documents open merging all those files at one point I had half-written poems from various notebooks scattered all around my house and something just had to change writing allows us to express emotions thoughts and experiences in a profound and meditative way here are five ideas of how to use the remarkable to or any tablet or just Penn page to write and edit your work in Creative writings prints that will eventually become your signature routine one experiment with different forms if it's poetry explore different poetic forms such as sonnets Haiku freee whatever you like if you're writing a novel maybe this means playing around with some dialogue one day Exposition another trying out different forms and learning how to master them to get really really good at them that can help you discover new ways to express your ideas which leads me to number two number two is read and learn from other poets reading the works of other poets can inspire you and help you grow as a writer so study different styles and techniques to expand your poetic repertoire yes you've probably heard me mention this in other videos it's so simple but it's so true so as for the remarkable you can download PDFs or ePub files of inspiration and research right to the remarkable right to your tablet so that you can refer to everything all at once in one place it's not as extensive as say the Kindle library but it's great for sending a couple documents or examples back and forth Um this can really help with like peer review number three is to adjust your bandwidth and flow if you only have a specific window in which you can write set a timer uh but preferably with a relatively calm chime or sound to it that won't completely bug you out try as best as you can to carve some time whether it's a week ahead or whenever you know you're going to be free so that you can sit down and write just something that's not too difficult for you okay I'm about to take a super nerdy detour but on the topic of finding time to implement your routine it interested me that all these examples of famous writers routines varied so much I know tons of writers who prefer the morning and also many others who swear by writing at night but I poked around at some studies to see if there was a scientifically backed recommended time for optimal creativity the thing is these results seem to vary too however there were some interesting takeaways from the Journal of neurophysiology from the American Psychological Society where they did a bunch of M scans on the brains of healthy Sleepers at different times of day this was from 2013 so phone usage is probably a whole different thing now but the study is still cited in a lot of places I'm not a scientist and none of this is medical advice and if I'm interpreting any of this wrong you can let us know in the comments but basically there were many scans where functional connectivity seems pretty similar morning verse night but when we look at these different areas it seems that the consensus is that the prefrontal cortex is most active right after waking up which is something that other studies like this one from the NIH say might be due to a decline in melatonin after sleep and while the studies don't talk about writing specifically I'd be willing to Guess that this is where a lot of people speculate that creativity is more tapped into right after waking is a very common thing that people kind of latch on to right they encourage writing around that time like the concept of morning pages so anyways the first study concludes that medial temporal lob functional connectivity changes dramatically over a normal daily period of wake pretty straightforward the center of the brain is known for memory of facts and events and there were also lots of other things outside the scope of today's video but my unscientific take is that keeping your brain healthy and sleeping well are the foundation for optimal anything since this first study didn't even include people with sleep issues which is probably a lot of us there are these variants throughout the day right but ultimately no one's saying hey you this is what you need to be doing as a creative person it's more like hey here's what healthy brains do and across the board studies agree that your brain is more alert the first thing when you wake up whether alert translates to better writing is not for me to decide but I do think all of this was interesting because whether or not you're writing on a tablet or with pen and paper or even your notes app I think that what we've learned is people tend to enjoy having a routine whether that's morning or night where they feel they can easily achieve a flow State and stay in that flow state in a comfortable way the key is not to force yourself into a routine that isn't realistic don't set your expectations crazy high start small but keep it kind of consistent and now I know that some of you don't like to stick to routines because it hampers the creativity that's fine write whenever you feel like it change it up every single day but the key I think about routine is that it's consistent for you it works for you and that it begins to feel like a natural extension of your day-to-day life edit and revise don't be afraid to edit and revise your poetry as you go and then more fully when you feel it's closer to done so there's different like stages of this take the time to find- tune your work making sure each word serves a purpose and contributes to the overall message of the poem or longer work so first thing in the morning like sometimes I get these random thoughts that just dream of Consciousness style uh pour everything onto the page and sometimes it's really weird it makes no sense sometimes I don't even use it but getting all those random notes that are jumbled up onto the page it can help me really just get out a lot of things that were maybe that are in my subconscious or that I've been stewing on or that were keeping me up at night and all of that even if it's not very good writing at all trust me a lot of this like it makes no sense but circling words that I want to keep or change Crossing out things that are unnecessary that editing process can help some of these things turn into something that ends up being like kind of good and part of good editing is to embrace feedback so share your poetry with others be open to receiving that feedback constructive criticism can really help you improve your writing and refine your poetic voice the remarkable is a great place to make this happen so swap tablets with a friend Circle highlight leave notes in the margins find your tribe find people that you're comfortable sharing with and get feedback that will transform you again you can send this to your trusted friends emails as well from the remarkable if that makes it really easy for you to get and receive feedback number five use your favorite writing tool with the remarkable my favorites are the calligraphy option and the mechanical pencil option for the pen for poetry um I use all different things usually I just use the pen when I'm writing for fiction if you're writing in a notebook make sure you have a couple options on you for some people this is their sacred time to get fancy with Fountain ink and I don't know quill maybe whatever feels right to you whether or not you have a tablet or just stick to pen and paper there are ways to sprinkle new tech interior routine without relying on the harsh blue light all the time I'd recommend having a daily exercise routine to get the blood flowing before you sit down to right taking breaks going for long walks whatever it is that's when I get my best ideas consistently writing is a journey of self-exploration um self-expression and it's important to just let your creativity flow and enjoy the process of crafting beautiful verses or crisp Pros that means something to you I've been working so hard on this and I'm so excited to finally share it with you I don't
