Crash in Bournemouth Airshow 2021

a plane ditching into the sea at last year's Bournemouth Air Festival today the pilot and wing walker tell us about their escape and why they're performing again he's just the most skilled pilot I know um he is my hero their display was a highlight on day one of this year's Festival also tonight [Music] foreign good evening I'm David Allard a wing walker who's plane dramatically came down into the sea at last year's Bournemouth Air Festival has described the pilot as her hero Kirsten pob Joy said she had complete faith in David Barrell who was forced to ditch the plane after it developed a mechanical issue amazingly the pair came away with only minor injuries despite the plane flipping as it hit the water today Kirsten and David spoke exclusively about their experiences to Briny Leyland as they took to the sky to perform on the opening day of this year's Air Festival foreign the wing walkers have long been a favorite of bournemouth's Air Festival and today they received a warm welcome a year on from a dramatic ditching it was caught on CCTV here you can see the plane coming in from the left flipping as it hits the water how did that feel that impact a bit like hitting a brick wall but then obviously you get the sensation of tipping over and then yeah we were then submerged underwater David had realized all was not well a few minutes into their display last September we do a maneuver which is called a 360 and then out of that we we climb slightly so I increased power but the engine didn't respond so I quickly realized there's a problem and the first thing I do is shake the wings get Kirsten's attention and get her down into the front seat and I was down within a couple of seconds uh you just you just have to follow all this at first David hoped they could fly back to the airport but the situation worsened there was oil streaming past the cockpit so I thought okay well obviously we've got a finite time left I can feel Dave behind me in the cockpit doing everything he can to to save me and I know that he's going to save us um because he's just the most skilled pilot I know um he is my hero David says the engine stopped close to the entrance to pool Harbor dodging dozens of boats he glided and ditched the plane in a small space in the water he and Kirsten were quickly rescued and treated for minor injuries there was a family that helped us out the water and I never got a chance to say Thank you so if you are watching thank you so much we spoke to that family the Barden horse the following day they'd been out to watch the air show in their dinghy the pilot himself was just fantastic he had such a little space to work with and he was able to control that plane and and landed on a Sixpence really I mean 10 yards to the other side of him there were very Rocky our crop in front of him was the chain ferry to the left there are a few big posts of marker boys an air accident investigation Branch report into the incident is expected to be published later this year David and Kirsten say they are excited to be back in Bournemouth sharing their passion and not at all put off by their experiences this is just me being back at one of my favorite shows it's just another day
