[Music] hey everybody welcome to the coyote Country Lodge I'm David herring host of the TV show coyote country and on this episode we're going to talk about what's the best rifle caliber for hunting coyote there's been a ton of the bait about it over the years but I'm going to give you what I think is are the best rounds for hunting coyote so I'm going to start off by eliminating three that are definitely not good and that's going to be a 22 long rifle 17 HMR and a 22 Magnum although there are a lot of fun to shoot they definitely don't have the energy and they have a lot of bullet drop so less you're planning on shooting a coyote 10 times those three are not good rounds for killing coyotes so let's move on to what is so we're gonna start at the smallest that's going to be a 204 it's a very fast flat shooting bullet it's not going to do a ton of damage and that's the bottom-line goal so when you're out hunting coyotes depending on what you're going to do with them after the fact that's what you need to kind of take into consideration right now the smaller the diameter bullet the less Pelt damage is going to do so if you use your deer rifle you know a 7mm or something huge you're definitely going to blow the coyote up so if you want to save it to mount it to stretch it and stain on your wall or if you want to sell it to a fur buyer you need to protect that pelt not blow huge holes in it so a 2:04 is definitely going to do that they're really good rounds I think under 300 yards it's a lightweight bullet I think they start losing a lot of energy once you get past that but they shoot very flat up to that point moving on you're going to have a 1022 and that's what Gabe has that's what he's been shooting is a great very accurate round shooting a 50 grain v-max is what he's got in his good energy very accurate ballistically it's real close to a 223 and that's the next one up in this list a 223 is probably the most common round you're going to find when you're out hunting coyote you can find the round anywhere it's a great round there's different bullet weights I think you're going to want to stay in that 53 grain 55 rain or even if you can find a 50 grain I don't like going up into that 75 range stuff because I think you're going to start doing a little more damage with them but it's a really good round it shoots pretty flat and you're going to have a lot of really good accuracy and reach up to about 350 yards with it I don't like shooting stuff further than that because these bullets are light they start losing energy and that's where you need your penetration when you start getting out there so moving on from the 223 you've got your 22 250 that's my favorite round that's what I shared the reason for it is it has a lot of muzzle energy I'm shooting a 50 grain v-max and it's shooting at 4,000 feet a second at the muzzle it shoots very flat very straight very accurate round I wouldn't hesitate to shoot out to 500 yards with this thing I have yet to do that I think my furthest shot on a coyote that I killed was about 450 yards typically you know that's not my goal my goal is not to long-distance sniper rakaia it's to get it to come in as close as I can that's where the disadvantage to my around is once I get within a hundred yards that bullet is moving so fast that I will definitely blow holes in a coyote and that's where a two to three I think is going to have a little better Vantage over my rifle is when you start getting close it's not going to do as much belt damage when you're under a hundred yards with it beyond that menu getting your shot men stuff when you're even closer but sticking with just a rifle ammo 243 I don't know it's kind of about other than it's just a really good crossover round you can hunt deer with it and you can take it out hunt coyotes it doesn't do a kind of damage they have a decent amount of energy but the bullet definitely drops because it's a lot heavier bullet at that point but those are the basic calibers that I think are great for hunting coyotes ballistically I want to compare a 223 and a 22 to 50 for you guys real quick so if you sight your rifle in at 200 yards that's what we're cited in that a 223 at 300 yards drops about 6 inches at 220 or 22-250 drops four inches moving out from there is where you really start seeing the big difference in bullet drop between those two calibers at 400 yards a 223 drop 17 inches and a 2250 drops 13 and it starts really magnifying the further out you go like I said you can hit targets that far but it may not be lethal shots that's where you definitely need a faster bullet at that point to carry that energy for the penetration you need so either one those are both the the two most common calibers both great rounds so that you know those are the rounds that I would suggest to start looking at different I was going to perform differently so you definitely want to look at that take that in consideration also but guys be like
