hey what's going on everybody so sharing a quick update hopefully this this sounds fine I'm not hooking the mic up or anything um just want to share a quick update as far as kind of my life goes um it translates really well to you know the the topic we've been discussing for a while now which is friendship and a comment that I've got quite a few times is regarding you know co-workers and you know potential friendships there so a lot of people say hey um you know if you're working so much then you can just befriend people at work and stuff like that but um I've always had the thought that co-workers are just your friends at work they're not really your friends outside of work and something that confirmed that I think for me happened recently so on the really good news side is I just accepted a job with a different company um and I'm really excited about this company um they're still in the pet food space so they kind of lead in in the industry or they're part of the pet industry that they're in um as far as pet food goes so really excited about that but on the flip side comes you know the negatives associated with giving your two weeks and living a job and I haven't had to give notice of my leave you know or notice of resignation in over six years so I was with my now my previous company for the last six years so devoted a lot of time and energy into that company you know Miss some important things with with family for sure and missed things um as far as certain holidays and things like that so really put a lot of energy into this this company that you know reiterated time and time again the importance of you know work is like a family which the more I guess healthy way to look at work is is kind of work is actually a team not really your family um my wife actually worked for this great local place that described you know that team mentality as really important as opposed to claiming that your family because just like you know in your personal life it's really hard to hold family members accountable and so if you look at your team that way I think it kind of skews the perception of how how you treat each other in kind of that working relationship and so I guess I'll just tell the story about when I gave my two weeks notice um last week so you know I went I went into it with the assumption that hey I've given six years to this company and um based on that fact that you know we have this mature working relationship and understanding and when I give my two weeks as hard as it is the company will be very supportive of that and that'll help transition out of the role and things like that so once I found out that I was likely going to be getting the role that I accepted with this other company I immediately worked to basically remedy any potential issues that might pop up during my transition so I created a few different transition documents some Sops so some of the work that I was planning the next person or even other team members could really quickly take over and even with me leaving within a relatively short window they you know it would limit the suffering basically of all the workload that I had transitioning onto existing team members or others so um honestly I put a lot of effort into putting all of that together I spent a lot of time during the weekend when I wasn't working to do that um and even nights during the weekdays and you know I did that because I respected the company and the people that I worked with and then management and things like that so again I had the idea in my head that when I quit there will be an understanding of you know hey I've done a lot for the company um so hopefully I want to make this transition as seamless as possible so um when I went into the office that day I don't go into the office that often but I let my manager know I'd be going into the office that day so we could cut we could have kind of a one-on-one and I pre-prepped my stuff thinking like oh it would be insane if they sent me home today and it would wouldn't really make any logical sense but I'm still going to pack just in case something crazy happens right and so um I went into my then manager's office and let them know um you know there's this company that I really admire and really admire everything they stand for and I I've accepted a role with them and kind of ripped the Band-Aid off quickly and initially my direct manager was happy for me which is great appreciated that but she had to call our director for our team um attended tuned it deep into detail but from what I've gathered from other people who have left the company and I've talked to directly this person has caused quite a bit of heartache and issues with people and multiple people have quit two people in the last year have quit just because of this one person but it really shows you how a single individual can you know kind of ruin an organization or at least a team of in an organization pretty easily um so I knew it probably wasn't going to be the best conversation but my manager called this person um and they needed to connect with HR real quickly to see next steps and about a minute later I was told that I would have to be walked out of the building so escorted out of the building essentially immediately so really unexpected for sure from my perspective um and I'll kind of continue the story and then elaborate on why it's unexpected but you know I said hey can you please just give me five minutes to go back to my desk I have all of these things that I've put together for you and I can forward those things to you um right away just hold up for five minutes and this will obviously be a big help for you these coming months especially in Q4 so I went back to my desk started sending these things and within maybe 30 seconds my manager came around the corner and said hey I have to physically watch you pack up um yeah the director said she had to come over and watch me essentially literally standing over my shoulder watching me put my stuff away whatever I had left and sending that email so it was fine to send the email to help the team but um you know after that I need to be on so um cherry on top was I was told that if I took too long or did anything shady whatever that means they would be having security escort me out of the building so keep in mind like I said I had been working for this company for six years I have given a lot of time and energy into this company um to be frank made I've helped make the company millions of dollars with you know not that much in return must be totally honest I mean I'm sure a lot of people can identify it uh with that but um yeah at that point I was actually just in shock you know being told that I would be escorted out of this out of this business that I couldn't say bye to anybody I couldn't say bye to any of my colleagues I couldn't ping anybody real quickly just to say anything I could do nothing essentially that I was you know told to immediately leave the building and not only that I had to physically be escorted out of the building um and to be totally honest it was the most humiliating thing I've ever gone through for sure at least in a like a work or a business setting it was just wild I mean I'm really glad that on the way out this was at around three o'clock so people I'd either gone home for the day or they were in their office or in a meeting or something so we didn't really run into anybody on the way out but the whole way out I'm like physically so confused and another thing that frustrated me is all the way down so I was on the 10th floor on the way down on the most awkward elevator rides you've ever been in elevators are already so awkward now imagine you're getting walked out of your job that you spent six years at um so we get to the bottom floor and then um you know my manager at the time says oh shoot I don't know if that email went through but at this point after giving them all the respect in the world and getting none in return especially from the director who threatened to call Security on me um I was fine if the email didn't go through either way um right after they said that it did go through but I was letting them know right away hey I'm not going to be willing to go back upstairs I've been threatened to be physically removed off campus um and it's kind of disgusting me to think about especially after everything that I did for the company for six years straight you know for the company that says we are a family you know we treat each other with dignity and they they have all these values they uphold which are just words on a piece of paper they don't actually mean anything and anybody else that's left the company or companies like this company can attest to that um it's unfortunate and I think the thing that was the hardest afterward and really bugged me because I worked closely with so many of these people for so long is right after I left one person from the team directly who um like I have on Instagram and stuff he's a really nice guy he reached out and said good luck you're gonna do great in the next job so then I expect okay well I have all these managers and I have directors who I've worked with in the past and all these people who one of them said hey you're like a son to me and things like that so that's kind of hard but um it's been a week and I've had zero people reach out which is a real bummer to be honest so six years of you know spending time out working outside of work and going to happy hours and making sure to remember important things about these people and Foster those relationships as much as I could in the workplace was for not there was no purpose to any like yeah I helped my job because communication is so important but the fact that I felt like oh these people are kind of like my work friends and things like it's really sad that not a single person besides right after I initially quit the only person that reached out was my direct team member nobody else reached out not not one person which by now they all know they'll probably all day the next day um so yeah that kind of sucks to be honest not the greatest feeling on Earth um and I didn't waste six years because I learned a ton between them and I've gained a lot of knowledge and obviously all of it helped lead to this job um which to be totally honest if I'm looking on the bright side of things it's a positive that I left when I did and not spent another six years with these false assumptions that oh yeah when you leave people are still going to care about you and things like that that's just not the case there are companies that exist where they truly care for instance the company my wife worked at probably the most graceful exit a company could ever have regardless of if you're going to a competitor or whatever they treat you like humans not like um just a money machine or whatever the case might be so yeah it's unfortunate but I will say it did confirm the fact that I had been thinking like this is not we're not a family at work we're not actually friends things like that like this is just things that we're told by leadership and we tell each other to get through the day maybe but the reality is that's just simply not the case so I'm fortunate for sure um and I'll still probably be um you know not mad I would more say like let down I would say um just based on kind of everything I already explained but um yeah I don't really know what else to to say about that situation I just want to be transparent and say um the comments that I've got hundreds and hundreds of with the whole you know friends at work thing um that's just not the case again there are organizations and businesses you know that people are closer together and you know you spend more time outside of work and you care a little bit more about each other which the company I'm going to the Saving Grace is their culture is incredible and I'm super excited about that and really excited about what the company stands for and um bettering the lives of of you know people's pets dogs and cats especially having dogs it's probably one of the most important things to me so it's really exciting but also a really Bittersweet time during this transition so I start there next week I've already had multiple people from the new team reach out so really excited to get started um yeah it'll update you along the way there I'm not going to say the names of these companies either one because I don't think it's any value add to like try to out this other company and things like that because I've had really good experiences with them too in the past and I've made some pretty awesome changes there so I can't say that I'm gonna waste my time saying that and then I won't say the new company's name just because I haven't started yet um and I don't feel like that's my place right now so um yeah super excited so I just want to share that with you guys and maybe you share kind of how your experience has been quitting and maybe the anxiety attached to it because that was a whole other component um you know I was nervous to to quit obviously um and the interview process with the other company and all those kinds of things so if you can share your same experience when you're going through that same kind of transition maybe from one job to another or the interview process while you're at an existing job or anything like that um I think it'd be really helpful for people so um yeah I hope everybody has a good rest of the week and talk to you soon bye-bye
