eight, eight new At ten, a Bay Area couple took their car to an East Bay Walmart Autocare Center. But while it was there, thieves jumped behind the counter, stole the keys and then took off with the car. Live coverage tonight from ctv's Dave detailing outside the Fremont police department with how investigators were able to track that vehicle down. Dave Good evening, Michael. It was actually the car owners who were giving police updates as to the live location of their car, all thanks to the car's GPS tracking app. Still while the car was recovered, they say this was the last thing they were expecting when they took their car to be serviced at their local Walmart . It just didn't look like our car anymore. This was not where Josh Shea and Linda Tan left their car on July 26th. And the people surrounding the Kia forte are not who they left it with. All the cops were around. And yeah, so it definitely looked like a crime scene. I think it was a crime scene. Their license plates were removed. There were metal pipes in the trunk and even a cooler with a laptop were found. If it happened to me, it could happen to anyone. It all started at the Fremont Walmart Autocare Center on Osgoode Road for what was supposed to be a routine service, something as simple as an oil change. You would think would get done. Like the keys were in their possession. It would. It's something so simple and so easy. I wouldn't think that our car would get stolen. The couple said. A Walmart Autocare Center employee called them saying someone took the keys from behind the counter and left with their car. I was in shock. I actually asked the man if he was joking or not because he was rambling over the phone and I told him to slow down and I just thought he was joking. I thought I was on a show or something. They weren't being punked, but they immediately switched into CSI mode. Linda pulled out her phone and with the Kia app, started tracking the car. It showed from one location on South on 880. Then it went to another location and then it ended up here. Here is the Lucky's parking lot on Mallory Avenue, four miles away from the Walmart. Linda tracked the Cars movement, giving updates to police. But when they arrived, the person behind the wheel was gone and so were the car keys. It's more about I don't know what it's been through. It's honestly like something that's been taken a strange person has driven it away. It's been a I don't know what has happened during those few hours that the theft had it. The couple is now hoping Walmart will step in and help. Right. A scheduled oil change gone wrong. They need to do something about this security system. They need to make sure that this doesn't happen to other people. And at the same time, they need to do something for us at the same time to and we did reach out to Walmart's corporate headquarters. In a statement, a spokesperson said in part, We are grateful for the swift action of law enforcement in retrieving the customer's vehicle and will continue working with them as needed. Now, the couple did tell me that there is surveillance video from Walmart of the incident. Still unclear if it's been shared with investigators, but Fremont police say they are actively looking into this case. But still there have been no arrests.
