you, Sal. We're keeping an eye on this fast moving fire on the island of Maui burning homes, forcing people to evacuate. KTVU Amanda Quintana at the Oakland airport where flights are scheduled to take off from Maui this morning. You're hearing from people who are visiting and people who are here and they live there. Amanda yeah, that's right. So there are three flights to Kahului from Oakland today. The first one takes off in just a few minutes at 7:00. Some people that we've spoken to here say they're trying to change their flights, trying to go somewhere else. But a lot of people that I spoke to say they hadn't even heard about this. They probably just woke up for their flight and headed here right away. So they didn't even know the news about these fires. But many of them say they were not worried. But one couple I spoke to was in tears as they were in the line here saying they live in Lahaina, They were on vacation here, and now they are headed back early. All they know is what they've seen on the news. Intense videos. This is the town of Lahaina. You could see heavy smoke and high winds. It's the front Street area. The history downtown area, very popular for tourists apart moments and stores have burned down. People have been evacuated. The Coast Guard said they had to rescue a dozen people who jumped into the water to escape the flames. Steph and Kimo Kirkman say their home it's in the middle of all of that smoke, Fred Street, Honolulu. We live right up the line and we have a house and our dogs are stuck in the house. We don't know if our house is up or we don't know if our animals are alive or not. So we're heading back now. The fire in Lahaina is just one of the wildfires burning right now. There are also fires in the upcountry area of Maui overnight. The fires have spread, fueled by those high winds. There's also brush fires on the big island, but there's not a lot of information being released because phone lines are down. Internet is down . There's also no 911 service right now in a West Maui. I'm seen on social media, people trying to get in touch with their family members that live in their area and just can't find a way to get in touch with them. But chemo and staff, they are on their way there. They're not sure if they're even going to be able to get to their house because they say the whole area has been evacuated, but they are just praying that their dogs are somehow okay, maybe that their home was spared or their dogs were able to get out.
