so you're trying to get a gamepad or controller recognized on your windows 10 or 11 pc and it simply isn't working that's frustrating generally all controllers are plug and play for pc you plug them into the back or front of your tower it installs some drivers and you're up and running in a couple of seconds however unfortunately sometimes that's not the case and we're going to remedy those issues today this is your controller captain we've reached 6 900 feet go ahead and start flicking the sticks and mollywoop in the back battles you don't like back paddles how about those rear buttons we've tested almost 100 custom and premium controllers and we're only at the beginning you need a thumbstick guide or tutorial on how to overclock your controller check out the controller playlist bing bong controller captain out now as for connecting a controller to pc you have four methods the most common and consistent is going to be a wired connection via either usbc or micro usb next up if your controller and pc support bluetooth you can't connect wirelessly via bluetooth even 5.0 which is the latest technology if you plan on using xbox controllers wirelessly you can get the 25 xbox adapter for windows pcs and that uses xbox's dedicated wireless connection lastly a lot of third-party controllers will have a usb dongle which is generally a dedicated 2.4 gigahertz connection giving you more consistency and peak connection speeds than something like bluetooth and operating on its own frequency so it doesn't get interference from other devices in your room for this video we are strictly going to focus on the wired method considering if you're having an issue getting your controller even up and running on your pc wired is definitely the way to go and you might be tempted to plug into a usb 3.0 port or 3.1 port don't do it resist the urge unless you're doing some kind of data transfer so you're using something like an external hard drive to transfer files for gaming peripherals such as keyboards mice headsets and controllers usb 2.0 is not only just fine will give you the same speeds but also generally give you more consistency i know that sounds weird and counter-intuitive because usb 2.0 is an older technology but it's what controllers have been working on pc with for 20-30 years so just go with it next up if you're using some kind of a usb hub or splitter stop using that plug your controller directly into your tower if you're still having issues don't plug into the usb ports in the front or side of your tower plug directly into the ports of your motherboard in the i o or back of your pc now if you have a controller with a power switch or toggle like this one even though you are plugged in you may be getting power to your controller seeing the front lights be illuminated however it is not going to work with your pc until you turn it on weird i know still having issues of course you are we've only just begun with the troubleshooting let's make sure you have the latest and greatest drivers come down here to the windows start menu or press the windows key on your keyboard and type in d e boom it'll populate device manager hit enter if you do use your controller wirelessly via bluetooth go ahead and expand this drop down as you can see i've recently had three wireless controllers connected to this pc go ahead and right-click on each one and hit update driver and scan automatically for drivers unless you have a local file for the update saved on your pc then you can browse to that file right here next up in sound video and game controllers expand that drop down and you may have controllers in here if you do right click and hit update driver but down here i have xbox 360 peripherals and you're probably thinking kevin are you playing with a 360 controller no most modern controllers will spoof your pc into thinking it's an xbox 360 controller in order to get maximum compatibility for it this is especially true if you're running a program like ds4 windows which specifically takes playstation 4 and 5 controllers and tricks the pc into thinking it's an xbox 360 input so you can do things like read the polling rate and find out what your input delay is go ahead and right click and hit update driver if you have a very old or retro gamepad you're trying to use on your pc it might not be compatible with windows 10 or 11. are you screwed absolutely not find your launcher of choice i've got a few down here origin epic steam we'll do steam go ahead and right click it right click on the actual program go to properties and over here in the compatibility tab check this box that says run program and compatibility mode 4 and go ahead and select yourself windows vista 7 8 whenever your controller lasts worked now granted this most likely will cause some issues with the actual launcher such as steam but if you're trying to run a controller from the civil war this might be your best bet next up you can run the device and hardware troubleshooter in order to do that hold down windows and i key which will pop you into your settings go to update and security click on troubleshoot everything's up and running with my drivers but if you're having any issues right here you will have a box that says run the troubleshooter you can also go into additional troubleshooters and click on keyboard down here this will look for hotfixes and updates generally for keyboards and mice but also for other usb peripherals such as controllers next up if you're having an issue where your controller works and then all of a sudden shuts down it's most likely your pc is cutting power to your usb ports we're going to go back into device manager expand usb controllers or universal serial bus controllers now go through all these and right click go to properties go to power management and unclick this box that says allow computer to turn off this device to save power next if you're still having issues find your controller right click it and disable device wait a few seconds and then re-enable the device next up your power settings may be to blame hit the windows key on your keyboard type in p that's it that's it just p power and sleep settings will pop up go ahead and click on additional power settings make sure you have high performance selected then go to change plan settings change advanced power settings expand usb selective suspend and make sure that this is disabled for both on battery and plugged in with this little drop down hit apply and then hit ok if you're still having issues back in device manager you can right click on your controller uninstall the device and then when you plug your controller into your pc it will do the initial setup installing fresh drivers for you last but not least you can google yourself some kind of a driver tool that will scan your pc for all hardware plugged in and all software drivers and then give you the latest and greatest patches i generally steer clear of these because a lot of them are loaded with malware and generally through a little bit of diligence and troubleshooting you're able to dissect what driver is out of date yourself and then install it without having to install yet another program on your pc so kevin we've done all that stuff how do we test that our controller's working in the windows 10 or 11 settings menu go ahead and type in controller and you will see set up a usb game controller now either double clicking on the controller itself or hitting properties will pop open this menu right here and as you see this is a diagnostic program as i'm moving my left analog stick it is reflected same thing with the right oh little stick drift there each button i press is illuminating one of those red lights and that is showing that this controller is working on this windows 10 pc what if you're having issues in steam whenever you plug in a generic or third-party controller a lot of times it won't be working in steam and how you're going to remedy that is launch into big picture mode and then in the top which you can't see because my face is in the way i'll move down here i'm going to click on this little cog icon which is for settings of course go over here to controller settings and check all of these boxes right here and as you probably know nintendo has swapped the a and b or cross and circle buttons of a playstation to where select is over here and then go back or cancel is down here so if you don't like that you want to go with a more americanized console layout then you can leave that unticked and then this is the important one over here generic gamepad because guess what that's what we're using it says 360 controller but it's not it's a fly digi apex 2. so 90 of the time this will fix your issue you'll be up and running with your gamepad or controller no problem and when you hit identify or if you can hear that noise but it's vibrating on my desk very violently over here in preferences you can rename the controller you can also choose if you like to have the vibration on or off over here and calibrate if you're having any stick drift which right now it's showing my input slightly up and to the left on the right analog stick reduce the dead zones right to the point where you're actually registering or you can do an auto calibration that works as well now click on base configurations and go to big picture configuration you can do this for desktop as well however you should always be launching games that you plan to play with a controller or gamepad in big picture mode as it is a console-like experience that lets you browse your library with a controller and also make sure that steam is pushing the latest and greatest drivers for a controller and if for some reason on god's green earth steam is not doing what it usually does by giving you the default button bindings for whatever controller you're using go over here to default and then click over here with your face buttons it tells you hey do you know what you're doing no we don't but we're going to do it anyway and basically you want to make sure the a or cross on a playstation controller and b and circle on a playstation controller are going to be select and back not only would that let you navigate the steam platform but also that will actually remedy a lot of problems in games as well oh this is wild is there a mod on this game or something this game is from the 90s granted this is a remake but i do not remember it being this insane with the movement did i just wall bounce get out of town charlie brown but as you can see um this controller now works and it didn't before so that's that's good just one of those days i guess yeah it is brother hopefully one of these steps fixed your issue and you're now up and running with your controller on your windows 10 or 11 pc drop in the comment section below if you're still having an issue
