[Music] God accomplishes his why's good gracious will in our lives despite our ignorance of the details so this evening we're in Genesis chapter 40 we're gonna go through the end of the chapter so through verse 23 this passage will actually go fairly quick I want us to see the overarching picture I think that is demonstrated to us all the way from Genesis 37 to the end of chapter 41 and reminds you of the the reason that Joseph has been brought to Egypt Joseph has actually not been just sold into slavery it's not merely that plain though it would seem that way to the person of the flesh Joseph has been sent to Egypt Joseph has been sent to Egypt to be the saving hand of God for the people of Israel for the sons of Israel and for Jacob himself it is going to be through Joseph that God provides this initial salvation for the people of Israel to save them from the famine that's going to be in the land and so God sends Joseph into Egypt to be a savior and he sends him into Egypt to be a savior through suffering God brings Joseph into a position of power and authority in Egypt through suffering and that's how he attains to this position where he's able to save the people of Israel this evening what I want to talk to you about tonight is the conquered obstacles in the perfect plan of God I'm going to talk about conquered obstacles in the perfect plan of God there are certain things that God just he overcomes he overcomes in our world in order to accomplish his perfect plan and a lot of times what we can think is when I'll mention these these three obstacles that God always overcomes but normally it's those three obstacles that we get so anxious about we get so worried of because we don't have any control over those things and yet we see time and again that God overcomes that obstacle every single time I don't want to give it away just yet we'll get to those here in just a moment but let's just suffice it to say this this little summary statement you can write this down to start your notes god is accomplishing his perfect plan God is I put that in the present tense because he is still doing this God is accomplishing his perfect plan you mean in my life yes in each of our lives God is accomplishing his perfect plan you might say to that well my life doesn't look so perfect I didn't say our lives are perfect I said God's plan is perfect God's plan is perfect when I say perfect I mean at least three things there I mean that God's plan is wise that and I don't want to talk about God in the way that we talk about our own mental faculties but but in order for us to understand it I really don't know how else to say it but God's plans are perfectly thought-out God doesn't think thoughts in succession like we do we have to reason and we have to think out thoughts and we have to stack reason upon reason and come to some sort of conclusion God doesn't reason that way the Bible tells us that God knows he just knows there doesn't have to be any reasoning he's not having to come to logical conclusion he just knows he declares the truth because he is the truth well not only is God's plan perfect in the sense that it is wise it's perfect in the sense that it's good it is good and not not good in the Santa Claus sense it's it's good in the sense that it is righteous it is just it is the right thing that should happen I don't know if we always like that because we see the way that our lives play out when we say there's nothing good about this this can't be right but in the end we know that because God is sovereign over all because he holds our life in his hand because he is the one that holds us fast because he is wise and he is himself good therefore his plan must be good it must be righteous it must be just it must be indeed the best thing that could possibly happen the best thing that could possibly happen now we could go on for four years and ages about how this world is playing out in God's good plan the best way that it could possibly happen there's a ton of questions that start getting raised want to make that comment but we'll stay in the text for tonight not only is God's plan perfect because it's wise and it's good it's also perfect because it's gracious its gracious sure God does everything with with perfect knowledge he does everything with perfect and pure motives and it's always right and it's always just but God is working a plan out that's gracious I mean he is treating us not as our sins deserve in fact he's treating us as sons and daughters of himself he's treating us as his heirs as joint heirs with Jesus his plan is gracious for all humanity God did not allow dot have to allow any human beings to live and yet he did even even people who reject him unto an eternity in hell he still allows them to have a life and he still gives them those good and gracious gifts that people enjoy every day he gives people these graces all the time but then for people who turn to him in faith God gives a special kind of covenant relationship grace to them and God's perfect plan in this world is gracious because it includes all that was necessary to redeem sinners like us you think about all that was necessary to provide us with forgiveness of sins resurrection from the dead everlasting life in a kingdom that has no end you think about what that costs God you say God is accomplishing his perfect plan it's wise it's good it's gracious in every way when you look at Joseph's life if you don't continue reading you would think how is that wise how is that good how is that gracious that Joseph is going through all these things but what do you need to remember you need to remember that there is an end to these things just like there is an end to our life we know the end outcome of our life don't we if you are in Christ we know the end outcome of our life all everything else is details how life plays out how we go from this life to the next all those things those are details but we know the end of our life the end of our life is resurrection from the dead everlasting life in the kingdom of God everything else is just it's details in the middle but our eternity is secure and it is glorious God's plan is good it's wise it is gracious and we can't see right now you don't you don't see the end of life we don't see eternity right now with our eyes we have to see that by faith see when Joseph is in prison when he is in that pit when he's in that cistern do you think he sees himself as second-in-command over all of Egypt the one through whom God saves the people of Israel do you think he sees himself that way he hadn't read Genesis 41 yet he doesn't know these things yet he knows the dreams that he had when he was 17 years old where his brothers and his mother and his father are bowing down to him but he doesn't know all the outcome of his but Joseph continues walking with the Lord through the eyes of faith so when our life goes into the pit how do we need to view that we need to view that through the eyes of faith the the eyes that say God is right now in this moment he is accomplishing his perfect plan that which is wise and good and gracious I don't feel it but I know it I believe it with faith amen so let's look at this passage together in verses 1 through 19 we're just really gonna divide this into two sections verses 1 through 19 you see that Joseph's gifting is tested Joseph's gifting is tested verses 20 through 23 you see that Joseph's gifting is validated Joseph's gifting from God is tested and it is validated now contrast this with chapter 39 in chapter 39 what was tested with Joseph's it was not Joseph's gifting that was tested it was Joseph's integrity Joseph's integrity was in test it was tested you remember how the section begins it talks about Joseph's enslavement Joseph is enslaved in Potiphar's house that middle section in chapter 39 that's Joseph's harassment he's harassed by Potiphar's wife she tries to seduce him but Joseph has held fast in his integrity by the Lord's presence he denies her and then she falsely accuses him and where does Joseph find himself at the end of Genesis 39 he finds himself imprisoned enslaved harassed imprisoned where are you God what did in chapter 39 tell us where God was three times in the first few verses three times in the last few verses it says and the Lord was with Joseph when was he with him in enslavement in harassment in imprisonment where do you think the Lord is in Genesis chapter 40 the Lord is with Joseph the Lord is with this man of his choosing so let's look here and let's see Joseph's gifting be tested verse 1 through 19 it says sometime after this so sometime after he is in prison let me point you to this fact it tells us in Genesis chapter 40 that Joseph was thirty years old when he was appointed to the governorship of Egypt he was thirty years old the beginning of chapter 41 tells us that two years after this event is when Joseph was appointed to the governorship which tells us that Joseph is out how old in Genesis chapter 40 tells us that he was 28 years old let me ask you when was Joseph sold into Egypt how old was he he was 17 years old when he was sold into Egypt so he has lived as a slave and a prisoner in Egypt for 11 years 11 years to the time where this happens Joseph had 11 years of potential doubts 11 years of potential opportunity for his faith to fail but we're gonna see right here at the end of this passage I'm gonna point you to three obstacles that God overcomes to accomplish his plans you see that lived out right in Joseph's life God accomplishing his plans despite all these problems that Joseph seems to face and we'll see that those problems are actually the exact same kind of problems that we face look at verse 1 again says some time after this Joseph being 28 years old you can fill in the blank it says the cupbearer of the king of Egypt that is Pharaoh and his banker committed an offense against their Lord the king of Egypt I have no idea what they did but either the king was mad enough or these guys were bad enough that it wound up with them in prison says in verse 2 and pharaoh was angry he's burning with anger with his two officers the chief cupbearer and the chief baker and he put them in custody in the house of the captain of the guard in the prison where Joseph was confined so that that cup bearer in that Baker in that order they find themselves in the same prison where Joseph is confined and you'll see that both of them both of them actually play a critical role in the plan of God though they don't know God though they don't believe God they are used by God to accomplish a critical part of this this historical narrative of Joseph's life to bring him into power says they find themselves in the prison where Joseph was combined verse 4 the captain of the guard appointed Joseph to be with them and he attended them they continued for some time in custody I don't know how long that was it could be anywhere from from a couple of years a couple of days to five or six maybe even eight years it could be a long time that Joseph attends to these men and cares for them it doesn't that sound ironic though Joseph is the prisoner and yet Joseph is the one ministering to the prisoners in every place of slavery or imprisonment Joseph has found himself the Lord has elevated him through his gifting and through his blessing God has used his gifting to elevate Joseph in every place that he has ever put him now look down at verse five it says and one night they both dreamed the cupbearer and the baker of the king of Egypt who were confined in the prison each his own dream and each dream with its own interpretation now pause you for just a second up to this point in the book of Genesis we have this understanding that every dream recorded in this book to this point every dream is told to us that it is from who it's from God does that mean that all of our dreams are from God that's not what that means it means that every dream recorded in Genesis is recorded from God okay so all these dreams are recorded from God Joseph will tell us later on that every interpretation every right interpretation comes from God because God knows all things God controls this dream life of these revelations that he's giving to these men so each dream each its own interpretation look again at verse 6 when Joseph came to them in the morning he saw that they were troubled here had a dream I mean we got to put ourselves in these guys shoes here have you ever woke up from a dream and what ever you dreamed about got you either sad or excited or mad or fearful and you wake up and you can't tell if you were actually asleep or not because the things that you are feeling from that dream seemed very very real here dreamed about somebody else and in that dream they did something that made you mad and you wake up and you're mad at that person you know like you need to go to them and you need to say hey I need you to know this you hurt me when did I hurt you in my dream you hurt me and you just you feel it and in the pit of your stomach it says that these guys had these dreams and they were troubled you know that word for trouble that's used in the book of johna to talk about the sea as the sea was raging and it was troubled and tumultuous it's talked about in second chronicles as as a person that was throwing a tantrum just this rage of anger says that that's the kind of emotion that these guys were going through they were absolutely terrified they were troubled by what they had dreamed verse 7 so he that is Joseph asked Pharaoh's officers who were in with him in custody in his master's house why are your faces downcast today they said to him we've had dreams and there is no one to interpret them and Joseph said to them do not interpretations belong to God please tell them to me what does that tell you about Joseph you see in the in Egypt and in other ancient Near Eastern cultures there is a long historical record about the the art of interpreting dreams there were people who made a living these magicians in Egypt magicians in the Near East they made a living off of interpreting dreams and signs and omens and they had these big long books to try to decipher dreams and things like that and it says that the the cupbearer and the baker their trouble and they said there's no one to interpret the dreams all of these chief men in egypt they're not gonna pay us attention they're not going to know I know that we've even had these dreams they don't care about us there's no one to interpret these dreams Joseph corrects their theology doesn't he he says do not interpretations belong to God God is the one who knows all things it's not the magicians in Egypt it's not the wise men in Egypt you're not going to get the knowledge of God from the books of men these interpretations belong to God now notice what Joseph says these interpretations belong to God don't they and then he says please tell them to me what does Joseph recognise about himself he recognizes God's presence with him he recognizes God's giftedness in him Joseph recognizes that he hasn't ascended to this level of leadership in the prison or Potiphar's house apart from the presence of God he knows it very well he is assured of the presence of God and he says on God's behalf I am his man for you so tell your dreams to me now it seems like the language of the Hebrew actually seems like this interpretation that Joseph gives is actually very rapid that Joseph is not having to hear the dream and then go and pray and then back and tell the interpretation God is giving Joseph a mind of discernment and interpretation on the spot God's gifting with Joseph was extremely powerful look at verse 9 so the chief cupbearer told his dream to Joseph and said to him in my dream there was a vine before me and on the vine there were three branches as soon as it butted its blossoms shot forth and the clusters ripened into grapes verse 11 Pharaoh's Cup was in my hand and I took the grapes and pressed them into Pharaoh's cup and place the cup in pharaoh's hand verse 12 then Joseph said to him rapid succession then Joseph said to him this is its interpretation the three branches are three days in three days Pharaoh will lift up your head and restore you to your office and you shall place Pharaoh's cup in his hand as formerly when you were his cup bearer only verse 14 only remember you can underline that remember me when it is well with you and please do me this kindness this has said this faithful love show me steadfast love remember me and show faithfulness to me he says to Pharaoh and so get me out of this house verse 15 for I was indeed stolen out of the land of the Hebrews and here also I have done nothing that they should put me into the pit verse 16 when the chief Baker saw that the interpretation was favourable he said to Joseph I also had a dream there were three cake baskets on my head and in the uppermost basket there were all sorts of baked food for Pharaoh but the birds were eating it out of the basket on my head and Joseph answered and said this is its interpretation the three baskets are three days in three days Pharaoh will lift up your head from you and hang you on a tree and the birds will eat the flesh from you I think that the chief Baker may have been rethinking his idea of sharing his dream with Joseph at that point he sees that the the interpretation for the cup bearer is favourable the cup bearer according to josephus interpretation is going to be restored to his office to return to being the cup bearer for Pharaoh everything is going to be all and well if Joseph's interpretation is truly from the Lord if it truly comes to pass you got to be thinking that the Baker is hoping that Joseph's a false prophet at this point he's hoping that Joseph is a false prophet because his interpretation of his dream is much different in fact it's the exact opposite three days time what is Pharoah going to do he's going to lift him up out of the pit as well but when he lifts him up out of the pit the Baker that is he's not going to restore him to his position he's going to lop off his head and then he's going to impale him on a spike he's gonna hang him on a tree this man is gonna be treated as a treasonous rebel I don't know what exactly he did to Pharoah but whatever he did Pharaoh's gonna show no mercy if Joseph's interpretation is from the Lord how do we know if Joseph's interpretation is from the Lord if it comes true it's the test of a prophet verses 20 through 23 what you see is not Joseph's gifting tested you see Joseph's gifting validated let me give you the test of a prophet Deuteronomy chapter 18 verse 22 and this actually goes for people in our modern days these people who stand up and say the Lord revealed me the demise of the coronavirus I know exactly how it's going to be put away well if it's so listen to the man if it's not so never listen to the main again these men who say that they have received from the Lord the time of Christ's return if the Lord does not return on the day that they say he will never listen to that man again he is a false prophet even if he tries to justify himself and and crawfish his way out of it he's a false prophet listen to Deuteronomy chapter 18 verse 22 says when a prophet speaks in the name of the Lord if the word does not come to pass or come true that is a word or that is a word that the Lord has not spoken the prophet has spoken presumptuously you need not be afraid of him now what if the word that the prophet has spoken does come about you need be afraid of him and why why must we need be afraid of him because he speaks on the Lord's behalf he speaks on the Lord's behalf if Jesus says child your sins are forgiven that is a word from the Lord isn't it presumably so but if the Lord says this which is easier to say your sins are forgiven or rise up and walk and he turns to the paralytic man and says be so that you will know that the Son of man has authority to forgive sins I tell you rise up and walk what is Jesus doing in that moment he is putting himself through an immediate test of a prophet with an immediate proof and if that paralytic man gets up what has Jesus proven to be he has proven to be a messenger from God and you know you know what happened the paralytic man he gets up rolls his bed up and he goes out immediately what Jesus says homes about he proves himself to be a prophet now what about Joseph what's gonna be true about Joseph look at verse 20 through 23 it says on the third day which was Pharaoh's birthday he made a feast for all his servants and lifted up the head of the chief cupbearer and the head of the chief Baker among his servants so he says hey it's my birthday we're having a drinking party it's a massive feast that word for a banquet er a feast as a drinking bout Pharaoh's throwing a big party for all his household and he says bring out those two guys that are in prison so he lifts them up out of the pit verse 21 he restored the chief cupbearer to his position and he placed the cup in pharaoh's hand but he hanged the chief Baker as Joseph had interpreted to them as Joseph had interpreted to them that word for as could be translated according to just as Joseph had said what does that prove about Joseph Joseph knew that the Lord was with him but now Joseph is validated at least in the eyes of that cup Baker or that cut bearer and in the eyes of the Baker Joseph is validated as a man gifted and empowered by God he has validated as a prophet of God now I don't know that the Baker's thoughts were very long because he seemed to reach a quick demise the cup bearer though he continues on in Pharaoh's house for some time in fact he continues in Pharaoh's house for two years before he ever says a word about Joseph look at verse 23 yet the chief cupbearer did not remember underline that again did not remember Vey the car did not remember Joseph but forgot him he forgot Joseph he has obviously heard a word from the Lord he has been face-to-face with a prophet from God and yet because he got a good gift he suddenly forgets all the Lord's benefits how many people in this life live that way Oh God lift me out of this pit lift me out of this problem I promise I'll do the right thing I promise I'll get into church and I live my life right and then suddenly the problem goes away and they say oh my prayers been answered and they just go about their merry own way and they forget to show steadfast love to the Lord who delivered them and God's deliverance given to them will stand as judgment against them that they should have believed in God now the cup bearer he's received good benefits he's been face to face with the Lord's man and yet what does it say he did not remember Joseph now I hope that you realized at this point that that key phrase there remember remember Joseph pleaded for it didn't he he says remember me and show me steadfast love to Pharaoh so that I can be delivered out of this pit I'm hearing wrongly shouldn't be here I've done nothing wrong I was sold as a slave I've been mistreated Joseph knows that he should not be in this pit according to the way the world works so show me steadfast love and he's putting his trust in a man here but what does the man do forgets him presumably so the chief cupbearer said sure Joseph I'll remember you and Joseph is banking on this here's somebody who knows my name here's somebody who will help me out but the cup bearers are stored and suddenly he just forgets about Joseph he didn't care about Joseph in the beginning at all anyway he only one what he could get from Joseph that's the way the world works that's not the way that God works in the book of Genesis I hope you remember this that when we see that term remembered most often that term is employed to talk about God remembering his promise and then coming through with his fulfillment Genesis chapter 8 verse 1 but God remembered Noah and all the beasts and all the livestock that were there with him in the ark and God made a wind blow over the earth and the water subsided amen God remembered Genesis chapter 9 verse 14 through 16 we still enjoy this benefit God says when I bring clouds over the earth and and the bow is seen in the clouds I will remember my covenant between me and you and every living creature of all flesh and the waters shall never again become a flood to destroy all flesh when the bow is seen in the clouds I will see it and remember the everlasting covenant between God and every living creature of all flesh that is on the earth why is it that the waters of Hurricane Harvey ever stopped we need to remember that the only reason that hurricane Harvey stopped pouring water on us and did not kill everyone in the world is because God saw his rainbow in the clouds and he remembered he remembered his promise made thousands of years ago that that bow in the clouds would be a sign to him of this covenant relented to destroy the earth with water Genesis chapter 19 verse 29 so it was that when God destroyed the cities of the valley that is Sodom and Gomorrah God remembered Abraham and sent lot out of the midst of the overthrow when he overthrew the cities in which lot had lived why did God show grace and mercy to lot it wasn't because of the righteousness of lot it was because he remembered Abraham further a little bit into the future from this passage Exodus chapter 2 400 years of slavery in Egypt in the these Hebrew slaves are singing praises to God and crying out their lamentations to God as they're making bricks to build Pharaoh's tombs and pyramids listen what it says Exodus 2:24 and God heard their groaning and God remembered his covenant with Abraham with Isaac and with Jacob God saw the people of Israel and God knew boy aren't you thankful that this is true let me tell you that when we sin against God as people who are who are saved by the grace of God through faith in Jesus Christ when we sin against God you know the reason why God does not destroy us in a moment it's because God remembers his son hanging on that cross God remembers I'm so thankful that God is not forgetful when it comes to his promises God remembers his covenant promises to us Bible says that God was with Joseph let me tell you proverbs chapter 18 verse 24 it says a man of many companions may come to ruin but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother there is there is a kind of friend that sticks closer than even a blood brother that kind of friend is exemplified in Jesus what a friend we have in Jesus that's a song we sing love it now let's look over arching Liat josephs life here then let's see some obstacles that God is overcoming let me remind you of where Joseph ends up second in command over Egypt he is the means by which God saves his father that God saves saves Joseph's father and his they're brothers even the brothers who sinned against him Joseph realizes this that God has sent him into Egypt for salvation Genesis 45 5 and now do not be distressed he tells his brothers or be angry with yourselves because you sold me here for God sent me here before you to preserve your life Genesis 50 verse 20 asks for you you meant evil against me but God meant it for good to bring it about that many people should be kept alive as they are today Joseph understands at the end of his life when this is all coming to the conclusion how the plan of God has unfolded in his life and then he knows how to rightly interpret the events that took place why why did God have Jacobs Joseph sold into Egypt because God sent Joseph there for salvation for all of Israel why did God have have Joseph staying in the house of Potiphar and then wrongly accused and sent in the prison let me tell you God had Joseph wrongly accused and imprisoned in Pharaoh's prison so that Joseph's gifting from God could be validated because it will be God's gifting of Joseph God's gifting to him to interpret dreams that will be the means by which Joseph is rescued out of this prison in Genesis 41 Joseph is the only one in all the world who can interpret Pharaoh's dreams but where was the gifting of Joseph proven I tell you the gifting of Joseph wasn't proven in the palace it was proven in the prison that's where his gifting was proven it was proven through hardship and through the most difficult time in his life and it would be through the gifting of God that God would elevate this man for the salvation of many for God's glory to fulfill his promise to Abraham that he would make him a mighty multitudinous nation so God was going to use the gifting of this one man proverbs chapter 18 verse 16 says this says a man's gift makes room for him and brings him before the great proverbs chapter 22 verse 29 says do you see a man skilful in his work he will stand before kings he will not stand before obscure men that's Joseph Joseph will very shortly in two short years he will no longer stand before prisoners he will stand before the king of Egypt so how did God do this did did Joseph know all this while it's all going on did he know about this surely Joseph knew that God was with him but Joseph didn't know how all the details were going to be working out let me tell you the first obstacle that God overcomes in accomplishing his plan obstacle number one God is accomplishing his perfect plan despite our ignorance of the details God is accomplishing his perfect plan despite our ignorance of the details obstacle number two and them before I go there let me just encourage you because I don't know the details of my life either and a lot of times I pray and I said God tell me God tell me God tell me more and more and more and it's as though the Lord says you don't need to know you need to trust you need to know that I'll accomplish my will despite your ignorance it's not your knowledge that's going to accomplish my will it's going to be God's power it's the same is true for everyone's life obstacle number two that God overcomes God is accomplishing his perfect plan despite the harshness of the situation God is accomplishing his perfect plan despite the harshness of the situation if you're going through a hard time right now that that's quite the comforting word isn't it to know that God is working right in the middle of that harsh difficult situation doesn't seem like it could get more harsh than it did for Joseph but where was the Lord the whole time the Lord was with him he was with him enslavement he was with him in imprisonment he was with him in betrayal Joseph being betrayed by the cupbearer obstacle number three that God overcomes God is accomplishing his perfect plan despite the failings of others and we could lump ourself in there too you could say God is accomplishing his perfect plan despite all our failings maybe that would be more appropriate way to state that God God doesn't need us to play the perfect part in order for him to accomplish his good will his will is not dependent on our good works his will is dependent on him the glory of it all is that God doesn't need us but that God uses us and that God accomplishes his wise good gracious will in our lives despite our ignorance of the details despite the harshness of our situation and despite the failings of others and even our own failings God is still working God is still accomplishing his plan amen now I know we I don't know if we've ever seen that song here before we used to sing it growing up there's a hymn we said we will understand it better how's it finished by gene we want there you go everybody knows that we will understand it better by and by by and by when the morning comes well it will understand it better then the Apostle Paul says that today we we see as in a mirror dimly but then we will see perfectly we will know as we are known because we will see Jesus face to face one day will we'll be able to read our Genesis 41 but we may be living in Genesis 40 right now now let me just give us a couple of scripture verses here as a balm for our worries is a healing ointment for our worries let's talk about the way in which we are we were saved Ephesians chapter one verse 11 in him in Jesus we have obtained an heritance having been predestined according to the purpose of him who works all things according to the counsel of his will amen you were part of the will of God the wise good gracious will of God you part of it Romans chapter 8 verse 28 all the details of your life working together says and we know that for those who love God all things work together for good for those who are called according to his purpose all the details the enslavement the harassment the imprisonments the betrayals the forgetfulness the failings of others God's working it all together for good for you because he loves you because he's called you according to his perfect counsel and will amen what a comforting thought God is accomplishing his perfect plan do you pray with me [Music]
