we live in Compton Compton California I Drive an old truck my trailer is beat-up and when I pull in some songs I'm like I'm kind of embarrassed but I'm like oh well we got here you know we didn't have no major issue the sport itself is a predominantly white sport and they don't expect for blacks to be in it so I think I kind of wanted her to do it to prove them wrong I'm gonna go get Lacey this is a Lenny winter horse because she gets her times done in time and make some money at time so this really is like my job she somehow dragged her me rope over here so I got to go get it I'm the driver I'm the bank I'm the supporter the cheer team I do a lot okay well click it pull it down make sure it's tight and then hook this one right here um I've been running on four six six six it's iffy cuz I started out 12 five years actually five years yeah five years when I really went over different rodeos and stuff a lot of people are like oh my gosh you ride horses what do you do it loves to act what do I do it says therefore everything is do you dance with the horse no I don't dance with the horse I just trail riding barrel race [Music] well I've been with the horses since 68 and my family been doing the rodeos for a while I got I got bull riders right down in my family for cotton you know it is a lot of gangs in Compton but but the horse community no matter where you from if you own a horse you know the gang members they respect you they don't bother you they don't they just see your ride then they want to stop and talk they want to pet the horse a you might be from a neighborhood you might be from a red neighborhood but when you come to the horse stable everybody is one when a lot of people expected something kids to be negative ghetto I would say as I said don't judge a book by coverage just because you heard Compton is ghetto come to students know it's really a friendly town in my perspective because everybody knows everybody [Music] wait no no no no no too yeah - what shopping yeah that sounds like did not pay - thank you Compton is considered a very bad area neighborhood which I didn't know nothing about Compton until 20 years ago when I purchased a home this is going on that's going on it's shooting its robbery is this is that or whatever but I happen to move on a block that were mostly older people that have multiple homes on the block and they school me they sit down and they talk to me we like we clap we said on the porches and we talked we ate dinner together and they I was the youngest one on the block and they talked to me so I won this and that's where I also got my buckle my first time going out to some of the competition's a lot of the press I oh she's just look at this little african-american girl oh she's not gonna do nothing and when I go out and they feel in a safe showing she like she's been in my daughter's it's like oh my gosh she came from Compton doing her stuff she didn't come in a place at first you know everybody was kind of standoff they stay over there we stay over here and once they seem that she can ride and do this and do that now they all want to come and talk to you and see who she own oh come on by my place now they tell us different Jim Thomas to come to they sometimes people look at us like the world look at me like I don't know what I'm doing when I pull out the China tonight oh who is this new girl and then when it's on the field is like oh she's really good and the dirties gets we get to talking the artist gets to talking and some some of the parents don't expect me since I am from Compton to be coming out there for four is ready to compete are ready to get first place second place and I respect that I have three of them yeah three of them right here which is first place winner for the Jim Ken as I deal with majestic Mavericks I don't know what the vision but yeah they us about where she come from where she get the horse from you're not saying that you saying that there is no you see what I'm saying you're saying it ain't no difference and I want you to tell the truth that what we experienced then sometimes we don't have gas money but we piece our points up to get to where we got to get to for her to go am i lying and the summertime we don't feel empty am i lyin it's hard it's tough I work two jobs I work two jobs to make sure she keeps everything that she need and I don't want to tell her no but unfortunately I had to explain so it's like either this or this you pick and you choose what do you want to do what do you not want to do but I can't do both and my trailer is not a 30,000 dollar trailer no I don't have a $50,000 truck but it gets us there so that's what's important so I asked her either do you want a car you want a horse and she told me no I want a horse cuz I want to run barrels so her car money does that horse over there we just happened one of the people we know decided that they didn't want to race anymore they had a horse and we negotiated a price and they agreed upon it and that's how she got our new horse but no I'm not paying thirty thousand forty thousand for horse and if it gets at that point I guess we just won't do it don't let a negative problem be your downfall take that negative problem into a positive problem and build from it and grow from it because if it wasn't for Bernard bright getting me out the house and telling me no you're gonna do something besides sitting on the couch watching TV I wouldn't be here turn the negative so positive and don't give up she don't have to thank me for this because just the love that I have for her and she want to do it I want to make sure she has seen to her eyes level with it obviously get in the Las Vegas arena in a far south place riding in the air probably hopefully riding with Allen Taylor sherry sorry if they still like around writing it I hope to be riding with them as well as give back to the community and let it be known that yes I came from here and I'm not gonna give up on y'all I'm gonna come back and give back to those that want to get out of their environment [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music]
