Very cool to see turbines in such a casual environment like that!

I love the lack of bullshit in this video. No long-winded intro detailing the guy's entire autobiography, no extraneous talking, none of the annoying "make sure you click that like button and subscribe if you wanna keep up to date with my channel and get more awesome content.....," but still fun to watch. Just 8 minutes of content, and a quick thank you. This is what more channels should strive for.

I discovered this youtube channel maybe a year ago. Lots of us I'm sure have had some coursework on gas turbines at one point or another, but few have ever been exposed to internals of a working engine, so I figured you all might enjoy this.

Jay, the guy that hosts the channel, is a very knowledgeable gas turbine technican at S&S Turbines in Canada. While there are very few equations or anything of that sort on his channel, he does a great job of explaining the engineering justifications for a lot of what you see in the engines he shows.

i just had that light bulb moment. I knew how these worked, but the hammer just dropped on my head as I just connected a few dots.

Thanks! I generally have only seen diagrams so this was interesting.

Thank you for introducing this channel! I work near industrial gas turbines. The OEM's do the maintenance, and they are pretty good about packing their parts in and out. It is fascinating to see, as he put it, the "graveyard of turbine engines" with different components and failure modes. Haha, if OEM's have a graveyard for their large equipment, they aren't letting me browse around.

7200 RPM, a bird, a rock, dirt from the runway, ash from a volcano, hail from a storm...bent blade=out of balance=vibration=pieces/parts flying everywhere=disaster in a fraction of a second. No more window seats for me.

So if you were to drop a screw in there like this, it actually wouldn't ring if they were in working condition?

  • he mentions at 4:17 that the blades should be loose so there's no resonance and they don't ring when you tap on them
  • the one he shows at 4:41 are corroded and stuck, which makes a nice tune
