[Music] just what is a IC card and why do you need  it well an IC card is simply an easier way   of negotiating the Japanese Urban transportation  system uh if you are arriving in Tokyo you will be   confronted with uh a map uh which shows a patchwork  of 20 to 30 um different transportation systems   and they crisscross each other in a way that  is extremely confusing for a foreigner so uh   and also uh each transportation system is owned  and operated by uh a different company and that   has a different ticketing system and a different  pricing structure so you can save yourself from   a lot of time and trouble by simply using an IC  card because an IC card is universally accepted   by all Transportation companies although it  doesn't permit you to buy tickets at a discount   it does save you a lot of time uh time that you  would otherwise have to use to line up at ticketing  machines calculate how much it costs to go  from point A to point B and then handling coins   um trying to figure out how to use the ticketing machine uh so on and so forth so you can save   yourself from the trouble of going through all  of that just by simply getting an IC card and   then you simply tap in when you go into   a station and tap out at the turnstile when   you go out of a station and the correct amount is  automatically deducted from the balance of your IC card so now there are two different types of IC  cards there's one Japanese people use on a   daily basis and there is one that is tailored to  tourists like you and me so the former they're   called suica cards or pasmo cards and you may have heard those are no longer available   because of a shortage of chips however the  latter cards the ones specifically designed for tourists to use those are still available so  what is the difference between them well with a   regular IC card there is usually a security  deposit uh usually 500 yen when you purchase and   active the card that security deposit  is refundable at the end of your trip when you   turn in your card you get back the balance on  your card uh along with your security deposit   Now by contrast the foreign tourist  cards those are only available to foreign   tourists because when you purchase you have  to show your passport those cards do not do   not have a security deposit and there is no  possibility of getting a refund at the end   of your trip so you have to use up the balance  and then the another difference is with the   regular Suica or pasmo cards is they don't expire for five or ten  years I'm not sure which it is but it's a while  with the foreign cards the use period is 28 days   after which the card expires and whatever  balance remaining on the card uh is [Music] lost and you can get them at um almost all  international airports for instance I flew   into Tokyo Haneda a week ago and most  international flights arrive in terminal 3 as I uh got through customs uh I was confronted  with an information kiosk and beyond that uh   there was the JR monor Rail um entrance on the  left and then the Keikyu line entrance on the right   you can get um the welcome suica card from  the vending machine over   at the JR monorail section and you can get  pasmo cards uh over at the Keikyu section now I   got the pasmo card simply because I saw the  line for the pasmo card first uh but the the   two cards are essentially interchangeable  uh and the only difference that I can see   is the appearance and uh in my opinion the uh  the pasmo passport card is just slightly more colorful so where can you uh recharge these   cards uh basically at any train  station where there are ticketing [Music] machines please insert your ID card in the [Music] train recording ticket information  please pleas do not charge [Music] complete at the end of your trip if you still  have a balance on your card um again be sure   to use that up in addition to train stations  or buses you can still you can also use them   um at convenience stores or coin lockers  or um vending machines for drinks now here's   a pro tip if you if you want to if you have  multiple IC cards and you want to use them at   a convenience store remember uh they only allow  one card per transaction one way to get around   this is to break up the transition break up the  transaction into the number of cards you have   well I think I've just exhausted every single  topic uh regarding IC cards I can think of um   if you have any questions just leave a comment  below I'll respond to it as soon as I can that   is all for now folks um thank you for watching if  you have time check out some of my other videos   about Japan and uh other places uh until then  I'll see you in my next video thank you and [Music] [Music] goodbye
