announced their partnership with amd and nvidia and apple support is coming soon but we have a big news following the release of their fear convolution reverb they are releasing a beta suite of new and original plugins featuring a wide array of classic and modern audio effects the first beta suite release will be the modulation bundle featuring three essentials phaser chorus and flanger effects and you can be the first one to try for yourself just sign up here at gpu dot audio slash beta dash sweet dash sign up the link is going to be in the info box down below the beta suite will be released soon so get your hands on it first hello everyone welcome back to miss best tv hope you're having a great day today we answer another one of your questions can i use a clipper on the two bus and if so should i use it before or after compression that's a good very common question let's start with part one can i use a clipper on the two bus well you can use pretty much anything you want anywhere in a mix but let's put it this way i personally am not a fan of using a clipper on the 2buss for the same reason as to why i'm not a fan actually i advise not to altogether of using a limiter on the two bus i feel that some people if i say yes you can they're gonna just try to use the clipper the hard clipper like they would do a limiter not to clip the two bus and vary against that because you know you shouldn't use a limiter not to clip gain staging and all that but clippers are slightly different than a limiter um you can definitely use a clipper whether it's soft clipping or hard clipping for collar on the 2buss i just feel you need to be kind of advanced and experienced to make that decision because it can result in a kind of saturation that can be masked easily so unless you have a very very reliable and high-end monitoring system you might not hear the distortion especially on a full mix that a clipper can cause if you push it hard and you might have bad surprises later on when maybe you already release your song and you check it on a small speaker or an iphone or whatever your song is going to be played whatever crappy media is going to be played on you could have a bad surprise and hear oh snap you know that chorus or those big tom hits are distorting because of the clipping so yes you can just make sure that you absolutely know what you're doing of course don't push it too much you wouldn't want to clip like three four five db on your two bars with a clipper whether it's hard or soft and just make sure that you're not audibly distorting because there's clippers are gonna add distortion but it's harmonic distortion and it's masked and it's totally fine everybody does that we all do that just make sure that it's not audible distortion how you do that if you don't have a monitoring system like mine you're gonna have to listen to it a billion times on as many speakers as possible so this is number one part one of the question the second should i use it before or after compression where you place your clipper in relationship to your two bus compression changes dramatically and it also changes the purpose as to why you're using a clipper on the 2buss generally speaking clippers and saturators all right let's take for example my hg2 they like raw transients one of the great things that clippers do is being able to reduce the nominal level of those spikes those peaks right while maintaining the perceived loudness of those elements that you're clipping usually fast transients kick snares but also vocals or acoustic guitars so if we follow this thought process and we think that the clipper is the best tool to achieve that specific task you wouldn't want to do the transients before hitting a clipper because you wouldn't take full advantage of what you're using the clipper for okay so if you put a compressor before that you're kind of doing that okay of course it depends on the settings because for example if you use very slow attack time the transients are going to pass but you're still changing the envelope while personally i just like to feed a clipper or a saturation box raw transients but we can use clippers after the compression on the two bus it's just the purpose at this point changes you're not really using it with the intent of getting a better crest factor and less nominal level on the spikes at this point you're using it to add density and harmonic content so maybe you could use a soft clipper and kind of drive it fairly hard this of course is genre depending you wouldn't do it on a ballad you would do it on a rock or edm or even a hard trap song like that but more for color which is it is still going to shave off a little bit of nominal level but that's not the purpose because if that's the purpose then you're doing it backwards and you should put it before compression for the reasons that i explained before i think this answered the question if you have any other questions
