I don't believe it 19 you just remember one thing at our first meeting you must be good to me a classic match Mike Wallace with Tina Turner up close with the queen of rock and roll a revealing look at the life of a musical legend from packed stadiums to her palatial home on the French Riviera this is my bedroom you feel like you deserve all this I deserve more and the real reason Turner canceled a multi-million dollar tour with Elton John I made a mistake when I needed to show him how to play Proud Mary the mistake is you don't show Elton John how to play his piano plus Tina Turner unplugged and never-before-seen performance [Music] I'm Lara Logan welcome to classic 60 minutes when it comes to live performance Tina Turner has long been considered simply the best with her distinctive voice and raw sexuality Turner is more than a rock and roll icon beyond a remarkable talent and power on stage offstage she's a woman of courage and substance and that's what Mike Wallace first found in 1996 and then again as she embarked on what she called her farewell tour in 2000 for this story we dug into the outtakes and found more about her journey from poverty in Tennessee to the public success and private hell of her abusive marriage with Ike Turner and we found more about her comeback one of the most spectacular in music history but perhaps the biggest treasure was a song she performed just for Mike we'll get to that later first Mike Wallace meeting Tina Turner back in 1996 I had never been to a rock concert before I met Tina Turner and I confess I had no intention of going to one but what ed Bradley was unable to do this profile I jumped at the chance for this lady is a legend I don't believe it but you just remember one thing at our first meeting you must be good to me I'm gonna be good to you why would I be otherwise yes make sure you be good well that was surely no chore for she is a joy to be with offstage and simply stunning when she's owned [Music] and in Europe today she is a bigger star than she ever was in the United States I had no idea that you were such a huge star in Europe yeah no one in America knows that I mean people are always shocked when I exploit people say what are you gonna go to Vegas I was there already success in America and what I find with my homeland nothing lasts very long Europe is different you're right there with him until you come back and that's where we went to talk with her and her home in the South of France wild she worked on a photo shoot for Harper's Bazaar magazine her love affair with Europe is only the latest chapter of a remarkable life alive by now an oft told tale born Anna Mae Bullock in Nutbush Tennessee Tina's parents sent her to live with relatives when she was only three don't know where what kind of a town is not pushing Church hostage in house school house outhouse highway number 19 the people keep the city clean they used to chop cotton oh yes at how old maybe 8 18 st. Louis musician Ike Turner discovered her unique voice he hired her he married her and renamed her Tina Turner they would be the Ike and Tina Turner revue for the next 16 years tina created a reputation is one of the most dynamic performers of her time why light created his own reputation as one of the most abusive husbands in show business he was jealous wasn't he oh yes extremely berry oh but it wasn't just me he walked everyone around really yes what was his problem in life he just just had an uncontrollable temper when you left him you were kind about made for Hollywood folk yes I lived with people I had no way of paying them and there's work was needed and never as far as I can make a bit of self-pity no I'm a happy person normally because you know what can you do once it's done you just must go forward and that's that's how I've lived my life she struggled on the lounge circuit for years until 1984 when her comeback album private dancer sold 10 million copies and garnered four Grammy Awards the greatest single moment of my career is right now [Music] [Music] knowing the violet history with Ike and her age for that matter I had to ask the question you never want to ask any woman did cosmetic surgery play a part in her remarkably youthful appearance it's a difference in cosmetic surgery and correct corrective surgery right well let's talk about cosmetic for beauty I have had basically my face bashed in and I never did anything about it I just went through my life cuz I was alright and then I started to have problems traveling with my sinuses and I found that how my nose had healed many times and the whole Abbasid you know yes many times but it's never really really broken but I guess damaged to a point that is start to heal and the healing process started to interfere with the sinus sinuses so when they went in to correct it I ended up with I liked it I ended up with another nose it's different you have to look quite a long time to see it was the difference and I put my breasts back in place and that's how when we return the private life of a public figure Tina Turner invites Mike Wallace into her home in the south of France this is my bedroom good good huh you feel like you deserve all this I deserve more [Music] if Living Well is the best revenge no one beats Tina Turner as Mike Wallace discovered in this classic 60 minutes after she left Ike in 1976 she was flat broke and literally was a maid for rent cleaning friends houses in exchange for a room her extraordinary comeback in the 1980s changed all that and her autobiography which followed spelled out for the first time the years of abuse from Ike abuse graphically portrayed in the 1993 film what's love got to do with it she says that freed her for her life abroad Mike Wallace got a rare glimpse into Turner's private life when she invited him to her home on the French Riviera back in 1996 her home in the south of France has breathtaking views of the French Riviera a spectacular pool and all the creature comforts she needs this is yours this is my bedroom but what a way to wake up stage is the television I'd say it's very difficult to watch television and you feel like you deserve all this I deserve more and hidden away on the second floor a Buddhist shrine this born Baptist credits Buddhism with giving her the strength that she needed to get through the rough times and she continues to chant daily I'm nothing and go in the morning again I'm building a goal node and getting them out and if you do it long enough you become less stressed ready and know she says she does not have a magic exercise a diet routine I've never exercised I dance and I work in the garden and I work in my house and as for her legs market research by the Haynes company showed she has the most admired legs in America they paid her 10 million dollars to be their spokesmodel for line of petit ho [Music] as for the man in her life her only serious relationships in psyche is urban back he's a german-born record company executive 16 years younger than Tina I'm not in love with the rock action I'm in love with a human being is she the boss I think I think she's the boss yeah I'm second to the boss but she's the boss and the boss gets all the toys she wants there is her customized Lamborghini Jeep good driver and on tour a chartered private jet we joined her on route to a concert in Budapest [Music] [Music] if there was a telephone call something a lot of that country growing up you know it's arriving in Budapest just a couple of hours before show time she goes directly to the concert stadium for her pre-show routine in her dressing room she settles down in front of a mirror to do her own makeup as for her distinctive wig she says she's always handcrafted them you make those yourself yeah so I don't have so many are difficult you and who else who helps you you said the hair comes from Africa no does Italian hair I've been doing these wigs for all my life I've always done now that's why they've always had like they didn't come off the rack so to speak it's almost the atmosphere out there is almost like a heavyweight championship fight a Tina Turner formula for performing I feel that if those people are out there to see me that I must perform for and sometimes there's a lot of improvisation because I get it from from the crowd the hair the legs the voice all part of the legend [Music] your public persona is wild to a certain degree raunchy exactly exactly and yet you say these that you're not really that way and that you'd like only to pretend that you're sexy true yes let me just tell you how I'm about that what I give off on the stage and a man would approach me hey Tina baby and I never liked it but I can't correct it because that's what I do on stage it's my work I think people don't take singers as serious as they do actresses some actresses do worse things that I've ever done a stage and they are treated with respect [Music] [Music] can you imagine that you will reach a point when you'll say as far as performing is concerned enough is enough I could say it now but I don't think it's the time most people think that I I could not retire right now I could I'm pleased with my life with with the journey I'm perfectly fine out if I never win a stage again never in my wildest dreams that I expected how this many people here in England she says she plans to do smaller more intimate concerts in the future with the help of her guitar player James Ralston she left us with a bit of what she means [Music] [Music] all right thanks good when we come back Tina Turner decided to go on what she said was her final tour and Mike Wallace decided to join her plus a never-before-seen moment from that private concert Turner performed for Mike [Music] when Tina Turner decided to embark on what she called her farewell tour back in 2000 Mike Wallace couldn't resist meeting up with her again as Tana prepared to say goodbye to the road Mike Wallace found a woman at peace with herself and surprisingly direct about her failure to tour with Elton John that tour fell apart Turner told Mike at a rehearsal for the vh1 divas event the beginning of this last time around for tina was her appearance on vh1's divas 99 show she was set to perform her trademark version of proud Mary with another rock and roll legend Elton John a longtime friend of hers with whom she was planning an elaborate world tour the plan she says that died that the divas show rehearsal I made a mistake when I needed to show him how to play proud Mary the mistake is you don't show Elton John how to play his piano but she did and Elton John's reaction you don't tell me how to play my piano Oh Lord it just exploded it was like the past slapping me back in the face so then he stormed off he just went into a rage which he apologized lady he said he was wrong he said I was wrong I was wrong I'm sorry but she cancelled the tour and the multi-million dollar payday that would have come with it he's not like Jagger or like some of the other people that's professional enough to give a bit when two people are working together to make it work he's just very sensitive very very sensitive we wouldn't have been happy I think oh I think you probably would have been yeah yes instead she recorded a new album then set off on her farewell tour okay can I have your attention ladies she says it's her Lance but she treats it as though it served very first [Applause] [Music] but you do it but around it are screams and lights and glitz and noise and musicians and dancers and it's a play it's an act for the moment it's it's a small movie so to speak all the stuff and the action and the playoff between me and the girls it's life on this stage for that two hours and sometimes the music is loud and sometimes it's not I need that on stage I need bursts of life that's entertainment for me [Music] when the tour winds up she looks forward to settling down quietly with Erwin Bach in Europe where she'll have the satisfaction of contemplating just how far she has come from Nutbush Tennessee in the old days when American audiences were just not all that interested in the ex-wife of Ike Turner and the life she looks forward to now I reminded her he's all white you live in a white world you do live in a white country with a white guy your work is mainly like those of white rock bands correct yeah like this might be hard for you or people to understand but I don't think about color erase I don't think I ever thought that much about the difference even when I lived in the South I mean back in Nutbush Tennessee and beyond going to a back door never bothered me I don't remember ever ever being I don't remember being called a [ __ ] but a few times when it happened I just kind of feel well yeah I'm black I am I am considered a [ __ ] so it never bothered me you know what makes me ask about that is you said to me that you felt that you in a sense belonged now over in Europe more than in the United States yes Kenneth's more and it's more comfortable for people of color to live in Europe than it is here Mike I've never bothered about my color I never had that thing about being black if the whole world was like that maybe there would be more harmony and love maybe I don't have a problem with being black in a white country or being with my people it's I'm okay where I am I don't even think about it and she says that only now as she becomes completely comfortable with her career so comfortable she says that she'll walk away with not a single regret you said I am in the best place I've ever been it's it's like serene days this kind of like everything is over I can't get emotional when I talk about it it's almost like the war is over it's all finished you've arrived you got there [Music] so don't expect much more from her in the future than an occasional performance [Music] one's less like this [Music] and more like the one she left us with at her home in me [Music] tina turner's been off the road since that tour in 2000 she's limited her public appearances to charity events and award shows but is the queen of rock and roll rarely retired if anyone knows how to stage a comeback its Tina Turner I'm Lara Logan join us next time for another edition of classic 60 minutes [Music]
