hey guys it's Justin Wilson logistics and today we're going to show you how to do a pre-trip inspection that's outlined in the CDL drivers manual now a good pre-trip inspection is important and every driver knows you have to make sure your equipment is safe to be on the road around other people we want to make sure that by doing a good pre trip inspection you and all the other people on the road make it back safe to their families so when pre tripping your truck you want to do it the same way every time get in a good routine so you don't miss anything the way we teach people top to bottom left to right like you're reading a book some keys to remember for your pre trip anytime you're checking metal components make sure they're not correct then or broken if you're checking something rubber such as a tire or a hose you're checking for no abrasions bulges or cuts everything on your entire inspection needs to be checked to make sure it's properly mounted and secured and if anything has air or fluids you always make sure that they're not leaking so the sections that you'll want to check on your vehicle are the front of the tractor and the engine compartment the driver door fuel area the trailer you'll perform a complete external light check and you'll also need to do an in-cab inspection which includes your tug tests your service brake check and also your air brake tests also you need to check your couplings section so let's go ahead and let's start at the front of the vehicle as I walk up and approach my vehicle I'm gonna check for overall general damage to any part of my tractor I'm also going to get down and I'm gonna look underneath my vehicle and what I'm checking for is I want to make sure I don't see any leaks so I don't have any puddles underneath it I don't see any hanging wires and I want to make sure that I don't see any metal dragging on the ground nothing like that I'm also gonna make sure that my truck isn't leaning heavily from one side to the other which would indicate that I have a problem with my suspension or perhaps that my load is shifted inside of my trailer then I'm gonna go and pop the hood and I'm gonna check the engine compartment so as I'm approaching my vehicle on the passenger side of my engine I'm going to be inspecting my general hoses I'll also inspect any general electrical wires that I see what I'm checking my hoses and all my wires for is to make sure that they're properly mounted and secured they're not cracked or broken the electrical wires aren't spliced or frayed or exposed anything made of rubber on my hoses no abrasions or bulges or cuts and if they have fluid or air they're not leaking I'm also going to check anything unique to this side of the vehicle that's not found on the other side of the vehicle right here I have my coolant reservoir it's not cracked it's not broken it's properly mounted secured it's got the cap on tight up top and as you can see it is filled to the manufacturer's specifications at least above the minimum fill line it is not leaking I'm going to inspect my water pump you can always find your water pump on whatever vehicle you drive by following the lower radiator hose this is my radiator there's a hose coming off the bottom of it on this side I can see it it's fairly good-sized and it runs right up into this unit here so I know this is my water pump it's not cracked not broken it's properly mounted and secured with no missing bolts or mounting hardware and it's not leaking it's also belt driven and it's important to know that if you have items that are belt driven that they are belt driven if you have items that are gear driven you need to know that they're gear driven since I have a belt I need to make sure that belt is not cut or frayed or missing I also need to make sure it has proper tension I'll do that by taking my finger pulling on it making sure there's no more than 1/2 to 3/4 inch of play the belt is right here on the front with a pulley system I can see that it's belt driven has proper tension all the other items over here on the passenger side of the engine that I would inspect the same as I would do any other part of my vehicle I'd be inspecting all around my entire vehicle such as tires brakes suspension items for the purposes of this video we're just going to stick to the driver side of the entire vehicle as I approach the driver side engine compartment I'm going to start at the top and I'm gonna go left to right top to bottom left to right I'm going to be inspecting all of the items unique to this side of the vehicle first I'm gonna start with my alternator I'm gonna make sure it's properly mounted and secured it's not cracked bent or broken all of the wires the red and black electrical wires that are connected to it are connected securely and they're not cut or frayed no exposed electrical wires there's a belt on the front it's a belt driven item so remember you're checking belts to make sure they're not cut and they're not torn the proper tension is between 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch and I'll tug it with my finger to check that next let's talk about our power steering components I have my power steering reservoir it's properly mounted secured it's not cracked bent or broken it's not leaking it's filled to the proper manufacturers specification and the caps on tight there are hoses coming off of the reservoir I'm going to check that all the hoses coming off of it are properly mounted and secured at both ends no abrasions and no bulges no cuts and they're not leaking any fluid if you follow the hoses it'll take you to some other power steering components that you need to be inspecting remember as a general rule of thumb with using common sense power steering the hoses will go to other steering if you have air lines they're going to go to things that have air if you have something such as a fuel line it's going to go to something that has fuel so if I follow my power steering hoses it'll take me to things such as my power steering pump now power steering pumps are hard to find on some of the newer trucks they're usually tucked behind the frame and if you don't know what you're looking for it's easy to miss follow your hoses the hose goes right down behind the frame and you can easily see that it goes right into the power steering pump your power steering pump is gear driven it's important you know that it's properly mounted and secured it's not cracked bent or broken and it's not leaking any fluid the hoses coming off the bottom go to the power steering gearbox it's properly mounted and secured it's not correct it's not bent it's not broken it's not leaking there's another hose coming off of the power steering gearbox down here check it the same way you would the other hoses and it's gonna go back to your power steering pump as well your other steering components your pitman arm your drag link your tie rod end you're gonna make sure all of those are properly mounted and secured they're not cracked or not bent they're not broken all of them have their Castle nuts with the cotter key in place at each of those three locations that we mentioned you're going to check your suspension the mount for your spring hanger system and your Springs is securely bolted to the frame there's no missing bolts it's not cracked or broken your spring hanger itself where your Springs actually rest and hang are properly mounted and secured at both the front and the back with no missing bolts they're not cracked they're not broken your Springs the leaf springs are not shifted they're not cracked they're not bent they're not broken none are missing you've got two u-bolts the u-bolts are clamping everything together your u-bolts are properly mounted and secured they're not cracked they're not bent they're not broken and they've got the nuts on the bottom tight so you know they're not gonna fall off you have a shock absorber your shock absorber is properly mounted and secured at both ends it's not cracked bent or broken and it's not leaking next let's talk about our brakes my brake hose which is operated off of air it's properly mounted and secured at both ends it's not no abrasions bulges or cuts and it's not leaking the brake hose takes you to your brake chamber your brake chamber is properly mounted and secured it's not crack not bent not broken no missing clamps or other mounting hardware and it's not leaking air whenever you check your brakes it's important that you note whether you have disc brakes or whether you have drum brakes if you have drum brakes you should have a slack adjuster with the push rod if you have disc brakes you may not have a slack adjuster with the push rod you could have a self adjusting system this truck in particular has disc brakes there is no slack adjuster and push rod for me to check but if my vehicle did have a slack adjuster and push rod I'd want to make sure that whenever my wheels are chocked and my brakes are released I could pull no more than one inch by hand I'm gonna reach in here and I'm gonna check the disc itself disc brakes have rotors and pads so that disc the metal disc is not cracked not broken not chipped free of oil or debris that might make it to where I can't stop whenever I do apply my brakes I'm gonna check the brake shoe and I make sure that pad is not worn dangerously thin which would be less than a quarter of an inch it too is properly mounted secured it's not cracked bent or broken and it has no missing mounting hardware it's free of oil and debris my inner and outer rim I'm gonna make sure that there are no cracks or illegal welds everything's properly mounted and secured not cracked or broken my lug nuts I have ten of them all are present none are missing my lug nuts themselves once again made of metal not cracked bent or broken properly mounted and secured they're not loose which would be indicated by watery trails running off of them or powdery metal powdery residue which would indicate they've come loose if there were cracks around the bolt holes it would mean that they were over tightened so I'm checking all of those things I'm making sure to check my hub seal my hub seal is right here in the middle all the bolts are present properly mounted secured it's not cracked not broken it's not leaking and it's filled to the manufacturer's specifications my inner and outer tire my side walls as well as the tread I'm gonna make sure that none of it has any abrasions bulges or cuts it's properly mounted and secured and beaded to my wheel I have no less than four three seconds of tread depth on a steer tire my tread depth is evenly worn and there are no major chunks missing I'm gonna make sure this isn't leaking I'm gonna make sure it's filled to the proper inflation for the manufacturer between 100 and 110 psi is what we want and I would check my tire inflation with an air gauge at the valve stem I'll make sure my valve stem is properly mounting secured it's not crack not bent not broken and the cap is on it and it's not leaking back behind the frame you can find your air compressor the air compressors right here it's a gear driven air compressor you want to make sure your chat you're checking to make sure it's not cracked bent or broken it's not leaking and you want to make sure it's properly mounted and secured every truck is gonna be a little bit different and they change year to year so although it's right here on the Peterbilt if you had a Freightliner you were inspecting that air compressor is generally going to be found in the same general area but lower tuck down behind the frame you might not be able to easily see it so remember check to see where the airlines are coming and going and it should in general be pretty much below your windshield wipers and tucked behind the frame
