you blues and gospel spawned everything to come after rhythm and blues rock and roll heavy-metal hip-hop all came from gospel and blues in the roots that's the core of the American Museum the Blues is is the spirit is the core is this sinew this is the part of the Mississippi Delta you know they say that the roots of all American music is blues and a lot of that music started out right here I don't know there's something in the air down here I guess I love this time it's wonderful Clarksdale feels just like home Lord's Dale is the j-dog customer for me I played a lot of festivals here I love the church on festival I good afternoon folks my name is crankshaft I'm on tour from Minneapolis Minnesota I got CDs for sale for 10 bucks up here it's kind of an honor system type thing if you throw money in the tip jar there I grab one through this suitcase over here the town I moved into in 2007 had a city run car show and I thought it would be fun to go set up as a one-man band at the car show and busk for tips it was more like tongue-in-cheek than anything but now I'm doing it full-time most people like what I'm doing so I'm staying busy around home and busy enough to be able to travel and hopefully break even where I'm traveling so a lot of my influence for what I'm playing is like 50s and 60s you know Memphis or Chicago or you know adult the music from the 30s and 40s at 50s and 60s rough like rhythm and blues and rock and roll that was obviously recorded too loud on equipment that wasn't set up or capable to like capture that noise it gets over driven you can feel like the liveness about that and I think that's what I really like about like the deep blue sea nor the juke joint scene it's amazing how I got started closers 1 the blue second was at my church you know and he died I did too using a lot of people's came from all over the world to his using they they disclose they they knew my dad I heard about my daddy when they heard he had a song a song was playing music and when the feeling was over they came to me and asked me that I know this man about name of Robert we lost my dad and that's where I started from that's how people's got me going because I really has a long white wig I guess old for you but you know he has a plan I tell people what God has for you it's for you can I just get that I don't care what it is if you might not get it but one day you want our but he has for you you get it some people's I said like to see him they see the glow red but they don't know the story they see the glory but they don't know the snow they don't know to go to high school and you don't have nothing to do out here but I see trouble it's out here for kids you know and then once you got trouble deciding for kids no house nothing to do well deck on bring on trend of getting in trouble when I was growing up a lot of things what we did well my ticket was I was painting pictures or pastel and pictures or the little kids around there shooting marbles but now it's a whole different trend you got kids now they don't I feel they not having it fun we had they picking up tussles and going around when you don't want to be tough and bad now you got the penitentiary why don't you you you there was such a couple on my mother was iris in home mom and now I'm a dad died in 72 my mom took her nine kids all by herself devil took me along the way and I couldn't stand that she worked so hard I worked to start working early and the young age of being a grown-up like a lot of kids that was out playing when I was in the house cooking cleaning making sure everybody else was right at home I grew up fast and my thought was to go to school to go to college I don't think my mom asks what to make something out of yourself and that was my goal to make something myself oh I'm from Columbia you know well I came here to charge the battery up I try to do like every year I'm feeling home you know this is this is awesome with it look first of all you're doing awesome thank you for for being here appreciate it thank you very much there's not as that much blues going on in my country you know yeah there there's blues but rock blues and I'm like a when I was a young guy I used to hear the rock and roll bands you know from England got that kind of stabbed sampling and that I when I hear when I hear the mother waters I just different world and I'm in the blues because of that Arlen barn side jr. came Brad that that what that's at that's what I'm trying to do now I went to the church the Baptist Church right here in clouds in Mississippi like two years ago and and day they got the real blues inside Church once once I hear the sounds that women Oh buddy Oh buddy was I I can stop crying like 1 hour crying crying crying like oh Jesus Christ was awesome and they they just was there saying to me don't worry the good Lord strong through you just feel it blues is nothing Butterfield I use a Elijah when he was up running from a half Jezebel you know she want to kill him for all the stuff he had done and he was running trying to get away from then he goes and get tied set up on the Jennifer tree and asked the Lord to take his life now if you want a bag just and we don't Jezebel nothing at all these died your head with the blues that's all the game of the moves that's all the hay with the poop biggest influences for me would be dock Boggs he's a known banjo picker from Kentucky 20s 30s he wears his bones on the outside of his flesh that's what they say it's intense and the first time I ever heard his Spencer under the subs really son Smithsonian Folkways stuff it's just I don't know it hits me here and that's where he was coming from his heart so he goes from his heart to my heart and that's what I believe real music is all about that's what blues is about anything is coming from your heart I'm I'm 35 years old when I was 10 years old I was the Michael Jackson and stuff I love that too you know so Michael Jackson ice-t 2 Live Crew all that stuff as well this old hip-hop like that went from there to things like Black Sabbath you guys got like Tony Iommi from Black Sabbath who's in the old blues it's just kind of just one big old thing you know it's music man such thing as a genre of music call if it touches you learning nothing wrong you want to know if you're decent enough come to Mississippi because I used to play here just for tips drive all the way from Oklahoma eight hours and play here for tips and I can make it because they like what I do in that tip they don't have to tip me they got plenty of music here they don't need another one so no BS no nothing you either know how to play you don't know how to play you're either and it all boils down to hitting hard hitting it at the heart and making them move they want to shoot whatever dance if they want to take it up and do that they want to do it they don't have to you know it's just great music when a lot of guys get together you know just have a great time you know and drill music you know what I'm saying and you're feeling that music you know and that's that's what we'd be trying to teach the younger the younger group that you know it's the love of the music it's really not all about you know how much I'm going to get paid it's about the love of the music some people there's a great speaker some people's a great singer some people's a great musician but he gave me a gift to be an artist and then painting their sets out stage eight years old first thing I ever did was afroman good guy out of three strokes and then after all that I just do little patch there pictures when I was about seven green long in there I used to get the cardboard boxes cut the copper box that refrigerators and paint a pastel picture on that cell for about 50 cents back in those days it's not for doing this a long time I'll practice every day I'm 51 now and I do it every day now it's just love it I believe once you keep loving in from kids up there that a little break gonna come one day please oh my god people have dreams different dreams man just so happened to be on the book of Revelation I was fascinated about reading it so our family decided to do something about it so what I wanted to do was to sums it all up put it in pictures and kind of illustrate it I like to see it maybe on display something like that maybe travel with it the word God that people actually look at it maybe it might change something they got to be seen this must be so what is what is what is it with the blue the blue this is all of a cessation it's a personal experience this is all true the soul through your heart that doesn't blues about that's a blue spot praying to God say relieve this pain in my soul relief relief I want to relieve that the Blues are feeling good but but it's not it's not as that like a simple thing is something that goes through you in your heart I tell people that blues would never go anywhere news is going to stay
