promises in those truths that we live the way you want us to live god in freedom in truth in love and grace and peace and mercy and your righteousness god even your righteousness god i pray father that you would clothe us [Music] with who you are spirit of god don't let us leave this place unchanged we have come here for you it is all about you god even when we don't feel like it even when we don't trust it god we trust you and we thank you in jesus name and everyone said amen i mean you guys can have a seat thank you well what a powerful time of worship i know i soaked it in and gonna take it with me all week well i know we say it a lot around here but city church exists so all people can believe and thrive in jesus and that's not only true here in san antonio but we desire that all across the world and we do that through our social action efforts and our partners i know several weeks ago many of you guys showed up to show that support through our annual love run 5k and i just wanted to take a moment today just to share how incredible and impactful that day was we had 475 people register and on that day we had people from across the nation join us virtually and hundreds of you showed up that day to show your support and you guys lined up at the start line and what i loved is that many of you guys gave all your energy all your love there was so much laughter and of course donuts and so it was just so great to have you guys out there every vendor every sponsor every volunteer and every participant every step you took was a step to run for love now in addition to just physically showing up for our partners we were also able to raise additional funds for them see we support them all throughout the year but we were able to send them an extra financial donation and what i loved to see that day was we had our partners our representatives and that day while you were standing at the start line they got to see your faces see you show up and in addition they received a blessing from you all financially and this past week i got to talk to them and share this great news share photos of you of our event and they were so grateful and so am i but guys they wanted to share something with you so check this out city church you guys are awesome we were out there for the love run this year and we had a great time and we want to thank you for the blessing from the proceeds and with your guys help we're able to continue to do what we do and serve families with kids and the most important thing we can do while we're helping them get back on right here and you don't always get to see the behind the scenes thing and they don't always get shouted out and they don't always want to be shouted out because that's why they're behind the scenes but the people who made that video his name is chris and he kind of like is like a more handsome version with me with like hazel eyes and it's like i look like his stunt double that's the way that we talk about it and uh yeah and also and then gabby took the picture she looks like my little sister from new york hey i'm walking here but um they did an amazing job with that and i appreciate that oh there he is right there good job chris he hates it so much so thank you so much for doing that i get a chance to kick off this series teach us how to pray and i love talking about prayer not because it's something that i'm strong in because it's something that i've had to learn it's something that i've had to work on because i wasn't raised in the church but we're not just talking about any kind of prayers part of what we're connecting to is the greater things that jesus promised us that we could pray jesus promised us that we could do greater things even than him we could do these great things and one of the ways that we do that one of the main ways we do that is through prayer prayer is a big part of how we do these greater things and if you want to hear jesus's words for it he says it better than i could jesus said very truly i tell you whoever believes in me will do the works i have been doing and they will do even greater things than these jesus did some pretty cool stuff so he's saying you could do even greater things than those it's amazing because i'm going to the father and i will do whatever you ask in my name so that the father may be glorified in the son you may ask me for anything in my name and i will do it one of the important things he talks about the greater things one of the important things is who's going to do the greater things whoever whoever that means all people anybody you're whoever you're all people do you believe that do you believe that you could be the kind of person just regular old people like you and me could do these greater things because when i was growing up and like learning about jesus and all that stuff i thought prayer and greater things were for like spiritual jedi right they were for like people who were like way set apart but i'm here to tell you today like regular people like you and me we could do these greater things and prayer is one of the ways we do it but you can't just pray anything to see these greater things done now when i talk about prayer i usually say prayer is like pizza even when it's good even when it's bad it's good like it's really hard to mess up pizza right i usually say prayers like pizza and it's better to pray something than to pray nothing but praying anything isn't how we do the greater things so whether you're out there in the video cafe watching online sitting here watching this later whatever you are the kind of person you are the whoever that can do greater things but we got to learn how to pray for these greater things because prayer is a big way that we can do that and prayer is actually hard we struggle to pray prayer is not natural somebody has to teach you to pray just like somebody has to teach you how to change a tire or shave or put on makeup or anything like that it's not natural and so we're going to learn how to pray right the way that jesus taught us why do we struggle i think there's a lot of reasons that we struggle to pray for some of us we're just busy and we just i don't really have time to pray you're just kind of getting through the day you're surviving for some of us we're intimidated we don't know how to pray and we think maybe it has to be this formal process that we just don't understand for others of us we're a little skeptical about prayer and we're kind of thinking i don't know if there's anybody up there listening so i don't feel comfortable doing it for some of us we've been burned we feel like we've been burned we feel like we prayed the right things and god didn't hear us or we prayed the right things and god wasn't listening or didn't care enough to do what we asked them to do and for some of you you're just skeptical of this whole thing of like oh these are praying to some guy in the sky right that's ridiculous and you might not know where you are with this jesus thing and i just want to tell you even if you're super skeptical even if you've been hurt by prayer i am so glad that you're here today i'm so glad that you're here to hear about what we're talking about and exploring faith because you're welcome here this is a safe place no matter where you are with prayer and in this series what we want to teach you no matter where you are whether you're burnt out whether you're skeptical whether you're too busy wherever you stand with prayer this series is designed to help us pray like jesus prayed and so i want you to stay with us for this whole series because it's really good it's really really good and the decision we're not the first people to want to pray like jesus the first people that asked to pray like jesus were his disciples and so a little context they were traveling with them they'd been traveling with them for some time and they were hanging out with jesus day in day out they saw these greater things that he did and one day they were like okay i want to learn how to pray like this guy they'd seen him pray a lot so i said we want to pray like jesus so this is what they said they said lord teach us to pray just as john the baptist john the baptist was alive then taught his disciples to pray they wanted to be taught how to pray now the disciples were praying it wasn't like they weren't praying but they wanted to learn to pray like jesus which means that jesus was praying a little bit different than they were however jesus was praying it must have been unique it must have been powerful enough for the people that had been rolling with them for a couple years to go i want to learn to pray like that there be something different about it they must have seen what came from jesus's prayers and said i want to pray like that so they asked him teach us how to pray and it's not just for his disciples then it's for us now we can learn how to pray like jesus the kind of prayers that achieve these greater things that he's talking about so jesus starts and he tells us what's happening he says when you pray do not be like the hypocrites for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on street corners to be seen by others so jesus starts first with the do not don't pray like the hypocrites and he's referring largely to the religious the jewish religious leaders of the day that pray to be seen and jesus doesn't have a tolerance for pretenders jesus doesn't like people who aren't keeping it real because prayer is not about impressing others that's not what prayer is about okay have you guys ever like seen somebody pray that's concerned with impressing others like you show up to a meal and uncle joe is there and it's like uncle joe will you please bless the meal and uncle joe was like oh jehovah jireh lord of hosts yahweh king of all things and then 15 minutes later you're like the food is cold uncle joe the food is cold let's listen come on okay i'm the only one that's felt like that but when you're praying to put on a show you're praying to impress others and jesus like don't pray like that that's not how you're supposed to pray that doesn't impress god like saying the right thing or doing these formal things like standing up in front of people getting recognized for prayer that's not what jesus is looking for that's not how he prayed so this is what he says why why don't we want to pray like that he tells us truly i tell you they have received their reward in full so when you pray to impress others if you impress others that's the only reward you get that's it you pray like that and people go oh my gosh that was an amazing prayer thank you so much that's all that you get that's the only reward it's not a reward like oh god hears these prayers right it just means you've impressed people and we don't pray to impress people because you don't pray to people right the reason to pray is not to impress people that's not what spiritual growth looks like that's not what doing greater things look like so these impressive and important sounding prayers aren't the kind of prayers that jesus is listening to it's not praying like jesus so after he tells us how not to pray he tells us how to pray this is what he says but when you pray go into your room close the door and pray to your father who is unseen okay this is so significant this is so significant because jesus is calling god the lord of heaven and earth the creator of the universe father and he doesn't say pray to my father he says pray to your father so he's bringing us in he's bringing us into this family he's saying pray to your father who is unseen so go to a private place go somewhere where you can actually talk and pray it's like when you're talking to your friends it's structured it's not so structured and formal he's saying go to if you needed to have a serious conversation with a friend what would you do an authority figure that you respect somebody to talk to maybe a parent maybe a coach maybe a grandparent how would you have a conversation with them would you bring them in front of everybody and say wonderful grandparent of whom i adore you probably wouldn't you'd want to have a private conversation with them and that's what jesus is saying hey god creator of the universe amazing he's also your father which is amazingly significant we'll get to more about that later but have a conversation with them in your own voice you don't have to figure out this like prayer language that's all formal like you're reading shakespeare from a book right where it's just like oh the these and the vows do i have this in the right place what's it no no he's saying go have a private conversation with no with nobody else looking at it so you're not worried about impressing anybody else make it natural natural i can't tell you how many times i've been hanging out with people and they're like hey what's up man yeah hey how's it going hey do you want to pray and it's like yes our god who art in heaven right and i'm saying that's not what jesus is telling us to do he's saying go to a place where you're not distracted have a conversation with your father in heaven that's the kind of prayers that jesus played prayed and if you want to pray like jesus you got to keep it real with god if you want to pray like jesus you got to keep it real with god because he's god he sees everything anyway all right then he goes then he continues then right this is this is the follow-up what happens so if we pray prayers that impress other people all the only reward we get is impressing other people when we pray prayers to the father when we go in secret when we have the private conversation then your father who sees what is done in secret will reward you private authentic prayers will be rewarded by our father in heaven god listens and so you might be thinking well what's the reward part of the reward is just that god meets you there he meets you there in that place and you have the private conversation with them that you need to have and that's really important it's critical to have a conversation with god and to see him as a father so jesus is completely changing the game here of how we look at god instead of this distant deity that we're making sacrifices to it's a father we're having a conversation with in private it's incredible but because he's jesus he continues with do nots and what we should do and so this is another good one when you pray do not keep on babbling like pagans for they think they will be heard because of their many words all right now pagans is kind of a weird word it's not one that we say very much but jesus is kind of referring to people that are the non-jewish spirituality that they see like because there's a lot of different gods in those days and so he's talking about non-jewish spirituality here and they pray differently they repeated the same thing over and over and over almost like chanting and things like that he's like okay don't do that a lot of words doesn't mean that the prayer is good and here's what i want to say it's a little different for us today but i'm noticing more and more that we dabble in other spirituality we just dabble in some of the other things like maybe tarot cards maybe astrology maybe like kudanderas maybe like like light magic or voodoo like there's other things out there that we kind of dabble in and we think it's harmless because it seems harmless but i want to tell you that that is actually dangerous when we dabble in this other spirituality out there because what you're doing is you're seeking spiritual solutions from other powers other than god and it's not dangerous because there aren't other spiritual powers it's dangerous because there are there are other things out there that you don't want to mess with and you're inviting spiritual darkness into your life when you look at these you're inviting that spiritual darkness into your life and i want to tell you let me give you two good reasons one is when you invite something into your life that you don't totally understand you don't know who or what's coming with it it's like okay i loved like 80s and 90s teen movies when i was growing up right like can't hardly wait weird science all these things they always have a scene where it's like i'm gonna throw a party and just bring a few friends over and then it cuts to their house destroyed and it's on fire and a million people are there and you're like oh no this is out of hand you know what i'm talking about when we seek other spirituality that's what happens we think okay i'm just gonna call on this thing to fix something but you never know what's coming with it you never know what other darkness is coming into your life and the second reason is you're potentially making a deal with someone you don't want to make a deal with some of these dark spiritual things that are out there you don't want to owe them anything because we assume they operate like god they operate like jesus where they don't ask anything of us but these spiritual these spiritual entities whatever they might be they will ask for something in return and it's probably a price that you're not willing to pay and i'm saying this not to like lecture you but like man i've seen this wreck people's lives and again we and because we think we're just dabbling and it's harmless it's like oh what's the big deal doing this thing you can invite things into your life that you don't want to be there and so when jesus is talking about don't pray like the pagans this is what he's talking about don't pray like that all right he goes on and he says do not be like them for your father knows what you need before you ask him he's referring back to all the words repeating repeating repeating i know other people they like to manifest stuff in the universe right it's like i'm just manifesting that i'm going to do this you don't have to keep repeating it because your father knows what you need before you ask him okay this brings up a question when i read this i'm always like well then why are we praying maybe you've thought that before maybe you're at home and you thought that well if god knows what we need before we ask him why are we praying i don't have a perfect answer but follow with me on this one okay jesus is saying this because he's trying to change how we think of prayer he's trying to change our paradigm he knew we would ask that question because i'm sure his disciples are standing there like okay so why are we praying but he's preparing you for what comes next because he's changing how we think of prayer he's moving it because so often we think of prayer as a laundry list of things we need we think of prayer as god i need this god i need this god i need this god i need this and we can treat god a little bit like a genie i know that i've done it so jesus is having us think differently about prayer to change our minds because what he's coming to say and it's it's very different it's very different so after all this right gee i love jesus they asked him a question and he's like okay here's how not to do it here's how to do it here's how not to do it here's how to do it okay and now i'm going to teach you how to pray he prefaces everything i love it this is what he says and jesus says this then is how you should pray and he gives him the model now he's going to give us what i call a prayer pattern and you may have heard of it the lord's prayer so maybe you grew up saying it some of you probably know it by heart and it's a prayer pattern i don't think jesus was telling us repeat these words every time because he just got finished saying don't keep repeating the same words over and over that's not going to make god hear you and it's okay to pray the lord's prayer but if you want to pray the kind of prayers that lead to greater things follow this pattern that's what he's telling us to do follow this pattern all right our father who art in heaven now i use the formal language here just because that's how many of us learned it but our father who ought in heaven i want to say father is a huge deal and in an era when a lot of us have father issues it can be hard to think of dad as a father because our conception of a father might be negative it might be like well my father was never there or maybe my father was distant or abusive or whatever it is but god is a father who is always there for us and he loves us and if god is our father you know what that means you are a child of god you are a child of god say say i am a child of god okay say it like you believe it i am a child of god do you understand how cool that is to be in god's family and you're saying you pray to your father this is a big deal god isn't some distant guy on a throne ready to strike you down he's your dad who you could have a private conversation with all right this is so big so he's blowing their minds about prayer the disciples would have been picking their brains up off the floor at this point they just would have been like okay this is how you pray that's crazy but that's how jesus is teaching us to pray and that's why we have this series he's teaching us to do this all right next he says hallowed be thy name all right he is our father but he is still the all-powerful creator of the universe we still got to show some respect right he's still the guy who created all of this he's still god he's our father but he's powerful and it's okay to to acknowledge that i think sometimes we don't acknowledge some of these things because a lot of our society has become informal and that's okay but this part is just saying like show god who he is because when we pause to reflect on who god is we gain a better understanding of who we are and why we're here if you understand that you're a part of this big story of an all-powerful god and he made us option a not option b not option c we're not the backup plan he was like you're my hands and feet in the universe when we reflect on that it gives us better perspective on who we are when we think of god so he's our father but it's also hallowed be thy name all right don't rush a big thing that jesus is telling people don't rush in these prayers you don't got to get through it if we go by this if we're praying and we're going okay god hey how you doing okay yeah halloween okay and here's what i want to tell you about okay we're missing some of the benefit of prayer we're missing some of the benefit of what prayer is designed to do and jesus tells us exactly what that is the next thy kingdom come thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven now if you're not down with the thighs that's okay your kingdom be done your will be done on earth as it is in heaven and this is why we don't need to rush because prayer is about giving control over to god this line is saying not what i want but what you want see the purpose of prayer is to surrender our will not to impose it it's not to tell god what he needs to do is to go okay god tell me what i need to do not to convince god what we want but to ask him to move us to do what he wants see that's not easy because we think about prayer as changing our situation but jesus teaches us to pray prayers that change us if we want to pray like jesus and pray the kind of prayers that can do greater things this is what jesus is talking about jesus teaches us to pray prayers that change us we think about prayers that change our situation but jesus is like i want you to pray prayers that change us your will be done that's hard to swallow right your will be done not my will your will be done we're worried about our problems we're worried about all these things and it's normal to worry about all the things of life it's normal to worry about those things but one of the problems we have with your will be done is sometimes we don't think your will includes what's best for us that's your impression of god the father maybe you had a father that didn't like provide maybe you had a father that wasn't there that wasn't accessible and so when we say your will be done we assume that excludes us but his will is to take care of you we just sang a song about clothing the lilies right how much more important are you than a flower how much more important and how beautiful are those flowers see what jesus is telling us is that when we play pray your will be done that includes taking care of us now we might not like some of the answers okay have you ever prayed a prayer that you didn't like the answer to but i also learned from the great theologian garth brooks that sometimes god's greatest gift are unanswered prayers okay think of some of the prayers you prayed have you ever looked back at the prayers and be like thank god you did not answer that one oh thank god because we prayed some wild prayers especially when we're teenagers and it's like good just let me do this and then you're like oh i dodged a bullet and so often they're about relationships aren't they so often the friends are about and it's like just let me end up with this person and i won't ask you for anything else god and now you check their facebook and they're like oh oh i dodged a bullet thank you jesus some of god's greatest gifts are unanswered prayers that's why we say thy will be done he knows what he's doing people and you don't i'm sorry it's hard to swallow but you needed to hear it we're worried about our problems do you trust that god's going to handle those things for you if you don't you're going to pray different kinds of prayers so this is what i'm going to ask you to do i want you to start praying prayers that say your will be done not mine your will be done not mine and i want to tell you all right you got you got to listen to this one are you actually ready to pray that kind of prayer because these prayers are dangerous these prayers will turn your life upside down in good ways and maybe initially not so good ways sometimes you pray these prayers in your and you end up you look back two years later you're like why am i in kansas city driving a truck like what when did this happen and what am i i mean everything's good but how did that happen right sometimes this is the nevers i remember visiting san antonio my wife's family lived here we visited like when we first got married and i was like i'm never gonna live here but i started praying that i will be done and now i moved here like 14 years ago and this is home my kids are san antonions they love queso and the spurs right like they're not california kids i could not i could not and my kids are actually here right now so it's funny that i'm talking about them i could not in good conscience get them to root for the clippers so much pain so much devastation i couldn't do that i couldn't do that these are dangerous prayers it may bring about things that you don't want now but you'll look back on and know that it's the right thing because you pray that i will be done because god is going to hear it these are dangerous prayers because god will hear it that's kind of crazy right god's going to hear this prayer but it's dangerous because you're going all right god thy will be done all right so if you're ready if you're ready to pray these prayers follow what jesus said i recommend going through the lord's prayer and putting it in your own words find a way that you would say it authentically but listen to what he said find a see a secret place go away without a distraction because how often is your prayer life praying in traffic lord do not let me use the middle finger today how often is your prayer at dinner being like all right god is good god it's great thank you for the food we ate right like after you oh we should have prayed or praying at bedtime we're doing in a rush and we're moving around and we're doing stuff right so often our prayer life is that okay your prayer life doesn't need to be that take some time i'm gonna okay i'm gonna tell you wake up early wake up a little earlier why did you laugh don't laugh at that no wake up earlier and give yourself some time to set aside to talk with god because i promise you think of the important people in your life think of the people you love if the only time they got with you was you calling them while you were in traffic that wouldn't be a good relationship you would take you take time to sit with them you take time to hang out with them take time to go in secret and talk to god and put the lord's prayer in your own words it's a pattern and i didn't get through the whole thing we're going to continue talking through some of these things as we continue this series to teach you how to pray but just just do what he said just follow it he's telling us how to pray like him because this is how he prayed you read through jesus story and time and time again jesus retreated to find a private place to pray jesus retreated to find a private place to pray he does it he practices it so let's do that put jesus prayer in your own words and if you aren't ready if you are ready to pray because this is serious like god is going to listen to you he's going to hear you and he's going to do it if you aren't ready to pray this prayer i want to ask you what's holding you back what's stopping you from saying your will be done do you not trust god feel like god has hurt you are you still skeptical all of those things are okay but i want to ask you what is it because that barrier is going to hold you back from doing the greater things that i know you want to do whatever that barrier is going to hold you back from doing the greater things that i know you want to do and so if you're in a situation like that one be honest with god man get mad at him if you have to because you're maddie didn't answer your prayer be like god i don't know if you're there but show me that you're not that's fine whatever you need to say keep it real with jesus keep it real with god when you're praying and do that and a simple prayer that somebody prays and jesus honors that we see if somebody just says help me with my unbelief it's somebody who's like i have faith but help me with my unbelief jesus do that and your life could change if you do that to pray like jesus it's time for you to pray the kind of prayers that will change you your will be done not mine let's pray lord we come before you as people many of us ready to pray the dangerous prayer many of us ready to say your will be done not mine your will be done and we know that that's dangerous because you're not a safe god greater things require some risk sometimes and so you're going to take us god i pray that your blessing is over every single person who's praying that prayer and i pray that you show up this week in an amazing way for all my brothers and sisters whether you're watching online or in the video cafe wherever you're watching my prayers if you're not ready to pray that prayer i pray that people can keep it real with you this week god they can find out the barrier what's keeping them back from connecting with you in a deep deep way and to pray like you've asked us to pray and for those that have not yet believed i pray that they can start to see you and they can start to believe in you in your name we pray amen amen hey thank you guys one of the things that we did because it can be hard to get started is we recorded a number of prayer videos talking about how we pray so if you go to city.church pray or there's a qr code on the back or the the handle of your seat you can find some of these prayer videos that could be inspiration for how to put it in your own words there are a lot of really good ones there our prayer counselors are going to be down front these people are great at praying for people that's why they're called prayer counselors so come down and pray with someone
