hey guys my name is Rylan Russell and I'm the worship and media arts pastor here at Central Baptist Church in Owasso Oklahoma lot of you guys saw the multicam multi-view that I put out showing our guys working behind the scenes you had questions about you know what cameras do you use what kind of settings all these different things and I thought I'll just put together a video show you some of those details and we'll get to it right after the intro just kidding I'm not putting together an intro for this video but I will go over a few things hopefully pretty quickly and answer some of your questions mainly what cameras do we use why did we choose those cameras the infrastructure for our streaming and multicam stuff our ATM switcher and then I'll just talk to you about some of the philosophies and reasons why we've done things the way we're doing them here now before I get started I want to say that if you're looking to do a big multicam setup like we have here for the purpose of streaming live like Facebook live or something like that I want to just encourage you that you don't have to spend money like we've done on this type of thing to stream live what we found is that streaming live is not going to reach very many people because Facebook is is not meant for long-form consumption of our services so our goal with this was not necessarily to be able to offer this amazing live stream but it was really to be able to capture live in a multicam environment what's happening so we can go back and pull maybe a certain song out or a certain moment of the preaching without having to go back and edit things together so I'll roll just a few clips of stuff that we've produced here and this is all been live on the fly everything in camera no color correction no sound correction and and then we'll get to some of the details here you go [Music] [Music] [Music] versus [Music] let's lift our hands to our Father so there's three reasons why we decided to go with the Panasonic G line of cameras for our worship center stuff it's not your typical broadcast camera setup but for us three considerations for us were number one image quality number two would be cost as always for a church and number three was Oh flexibility that's what it was so for us as a church image quality was number one and these guys provide an awesome image quality number two costs a lot of these cameras if you're just starting out get a g7 and you know you can get that on eBay for gosh I bought these for three hundred dollars without a lens sometimes with a lens and then flexibility ties right in right there because these are interchangeable lens cameras you can you know set your shots up however you want Berndt based on what lenses you're gonna buy for us it was really important to not have these cameras locked down to only be used in the sanctuary we need to use these on interviews on different events things where we can take them out and if you get a PTZ camera or something like that you're just locked down if you get a giant broadcast camera like we do we recently actually just upgraded one of our cameras we're gonna try out I'll show you here in a moment more of a broadcast style camera but we needed the flexibility to be able to take these cameras and use them other places as well so now let me take you back to our switcher and mostly you guys are going to be probably familiar with this if you've looked at it at all but we use black magic stuff and I'll show you that right now okay so now we're sitting back here in kind of our media booth where our director would sit and call the shots we've got our a Tim studio HD it's not the 4k that does the 8 inputs and we've got our Hypertech studio many it's what it's called that records the actual feed to these SD cards then you can just take that out and upload YouTube and then we've got for our inputs we have camera one is right here in front of the sound booth I'll show you a picture of that one camera two is up on the wall and it is actually on a best score or something or rather that you can use this little remote our director can to move the image around and position that one so it's like having a third camera operator right there which is really handy then camera three is a wide shot that is right up here it's a g7 camera four is our roaming camera this is a gh five but honestly gh4 looks just as good for what we're doing in here we've got to 70 to 200 is to 2.8 on a meta bone speed booster and that gives a great image they run this on a monopod that they just walk around with so that way gives them a little extra stability to get those certain shots roaming around the other thing that we have was this a $5 little number pad and what's great about it is you can use it to call up your preview and go to different shots with enter and do the crossfades and stuff like that and that's just you know a cheap way to do that instead of getting 2x keys or you know the actual interface from black magic I did everything trying to save money one other thing that's really been helpful for us you see this little iPhone that's really old there's some app that we use that I have it set to where the alarm flashes the whole screen at them 30 seconds or a minute before the service starts I think telling them to start the recording and I will put a link to that in the description as well if that's something you've struggled with and it's been helpful for us so that's kind of a rundown of the can and now I just want to talk to you about little tips and tricks and philosophy of why we are doing things the way we're doing them right now okay so I just wanted to interrupt for a second back him off was putting the stuff together and realized I forgot quite a few things to mention so here we go cost how much did I spend to get our system to where it is now I went back and added it up pretty thoroughly and I think it's around $9,000 now and this has been over the process of about three years that I've you know constantly look for deals and that includes cameras cabling tripods converters everything that we would need and including you know the ATM monitors you know everything the other thing I didn't talk about that I said I was going to was the HDMI wireless transmitter if you look at like broadcast HDMI Wireless stuff it's pretty stinking expensive like thousands of dollars well a guy by the name of Caleb Pike over a DSLR video shooter com he's a youtuber he recommended this little naira SPRO unit I'm gonna link to his video because he explains everything and has a parts list and that's exactly what we use we actually are about to we have another one that we're going to be using on one of our cameras because I've got this new toy it's a cable cam that we're gonna be hanging in our sanctuary and testing out to use and it'll broadcast a signal wirelessly to something else I didn't talk about was you know your framerate options another reason we went with these Panasonic cameras was that they can output over HDMI a lot of different frame rates you can do 1080p at 59 94 you can even do I believe 24 P exactly or 23 9 8 but we don't do that I wouldn't advise that really because getting your PC or your Mac and display to hook up with that takes a lot of effort so what we do right now which is probably going to change is we use 59.94 I and to get to that you have to be in the AVC HD recording format but we're not recording so it doesn't matter I mean it will output that and then our marshal CV 502 camera that is on our drummer we have another one that we don't use currently on stage I can do that as well now something you might also consider are the converters we use the the MDA checks decimate errs I tried the Blackmagic converters and to change the frame rates to make them match because the ATM has to be exactly the same frame rate it's not gonna work you know you can't just throw a GoPro up there and think it's gonna work another option that you got that we tried that we didn't actually love but for some people it might work great is this little camera right here it's called a Z camera D 1 and it has the same exact sensor the Micro Four Thirds sensor as a gh4 and while that looked great for us it was just more worth it to get a g7 yeah I picked these effort under dollars each guys something like it has a great image but the functionality is not quite there so another thing I didn't talk about was getting our stream online we use a program called a piece of software called just broadcaster if you go to WWF prod Castro comm you can buy a license for either YouTube or Facebook for $40 a year we got in on that early it was 20 bucks and we got it for lifetime and the last thing I want to say before I go back to the other video is that things will change right a year from now I'll have different stuff but for us this works right now so hopefully it's helped back to the video so there's a lot of different ways to go about this and a lot of different types of cameras or gear that you can get to get a great image for us this is one of the cheapest ways that I've been able to do it tip number one look for used gear I've had great luck with eBay buying these cameras lenses and then you know being able to get them for gosh half the cost sometimes but you really do have to watch so check out for used gear Facebook marketplace things like that the second tip I'd have if you're gonna go this route check out vintage lenses I mean there's some great vintage lenses and if you've got a lock down shot somewhere you can get you know 50 millimeter one-point-eight Prime and just adapt it onto your camera for you know fifty dollars and have a great looking image the third tip that I would have is you know involve your youth in this because I've had so many of our students that have gotten involved with this and really have have blossomed and been able to help us a lot and taking a lot of ownership in this thing and it's been really cool to see the last tip that I would give you is just to reiterate that to me the live stream the Facebook live kind of thing is not necessarily what should be your end goal what I would do is take these multicam recordings that you're able to get and repurpose them for for certain types of posts or instagrams or anything like that we've had great success with those reaching our community whether that's sharing a certain song or clip from a sermon things like that so I'll try to link all the things I've talked about and some of the stuff that I didn't even talk about in the description below if you have any questions just ask in the comments thanks guys
