here we go live from Las Vegas Nevada for NBA Summer League 2023 welcome to Chris Martin Show as we record this on Sunday evening which you will hear on Monday and we will go through 10 things that have taken place since we last spoke we arrived here on Friday we will go through what's going on in Las Vegas we will go through the basketball we'll go through what the Grizzlies did in their first game and get you ready for their second game in addition to that we all got to meet Marcus Smart for the first time there have been other Grizzly characters out here as well as many sightings as the entire NBA has descended upon Las Vegas Nevada for summer league and what is a bigger event than it has ever been before than it has been before we're gonna do 10 things we'll cover it all let's do it turn it up foreign [Music] the show on camera in Las Vegas you see us we are actually in my room uh right now and bold move I will tell you the reason we have never done the show on camera before is because it was probably it was probably a bit it would have been a huge mistake to do it on camera in years past but we are now all responsible we are now all washed up and so we are able to do shows on camera even at night time it doesn't even make any difference uh but this has been an eventful weekend so far and we've got more to get to before I get anything welcome John Rose to the show John cause I'm dope this is not a sunglasses in Advil no no no no this is just sunglasses because I just want to look dope I will say you are doing way better than us Devin because if I would have been in Utah and then to this well Dallas before that too oh yeah Dallas before that well I will say but the hard part to me honestly is the time change like it just doesn't feel right you know when we uh earlier today I had gone over to the MGM Grand because I had uh recorded with Kevin O'Connor a ringer podcast and Rosa and I were hanging out at the Grand for a minute and then we came back it's six o'clock and it's like man my day especially with the kids like winding down at 8 o'clock walk in Memphis yeah everybody's kind of winding down from the day and it's like totally bright outside everybody you know we're sitting in traffic it's just all it's also discombobulating honestly and then yeah when you eat is all screwed up like everything you just don't have time to adjust all turned upside down no no you can't because like I mean full disclosures you said we're recording this Sunday night right now it is after 10 p.m in Memphis right now that's right which would be absolutely like all right I guess I'll turn the TV off and start laying down in bed and maybe I'll fall asleep in an hour or so we're getting ready to go support Vegas and we haven't eaten dinner yet so we're here we haven't eaten dinner yet we're recording the podcast tonight before the events of the evening all right a lot of stuff is going on we got 10 things 10 things 10 things number one all washed up Las Vegas now all right so we have come out here to Las Vegas and now I am proud to announce that we are all officially veterans yes we're veterans in the game call me Carl Landry you start to learn PJ Tucker or something bro look one of the things that we talked about throughout the year and one of the reasons that Marcus Smart is now a Grizzly and Derrick Rose is now Grizzly is the need for good Veterans for to influence the young guys and for them to look to to see uh you know maybe prior mistakes that were made or they know the ropes they know what it's like now and I I do believe that this is the first year that we have been out at Vegas summer league that we have all come to terms with what we are now where we fit in the landscape of this yes and the decision making that goes into how we feel for the course of the next two or three days and therefore four uh when we got here on Friday we went to Marcus Mark's press conference and then we were hanging out and went and got something to eat then came back and I'm proud to announce Rosa and I were back in our rooms by 10 30 p.m which is incredible loser actions and deeds in Las Vegas Yes and yet we were up bright and early on Saturday morning getting coffee and feeling great yes Mr CVS over here yeah by Saturday morning and the same has gone for now last night was a little bit later uh but what we have found is that when everybody is like hey do you want to go to the J Cole concert hey the baby is playing at Drea's I'm sure hey this is going on tonight Jack Arlo tonight y'all got it the shack is DJing at uh the Encore Beach Club uh The Chainsmokers are playing at XS tonight like all of these different things there's a million things going on and one of the things that we have learned is that if you say yes to that then you go and then you end up drinking and then the performer does not show up until 2 30 or 3 in the morning yes plays for about 30 to 40 minutes and then next thing you know you are coming back to your hotel at 4am and you live with the incredible disappointment of what has just taken place because you know you were about to pay dearly for that for four days straight and it wasn't that fun yeah for me for me and you and you felt old there the whole time anyway for me uh like even like last night I was in bed by maybe like two o'clock but like I was on the hit the sausage y'all come to my room drink tequila with a couple people in my room by the way drinking my room they left I was I was asleep by 2 am unbelievable like usually that's what I'm most proud of you Dad it usually like unbelievable that goes from like we're drinking tequila in the room to yo y'all trying to slide and I go to bed at 5am 6 a.m yeah and I wake up and I'm like I have not disappeared for 24 hours straight like last year that was great yeah no that's that's been great I also say first time ever I have gotten um eight hours of sober sleep in Vegas just like the Grizzlies bro we're all we're all evolving we're better we're now we're now old and we have now understood the errors of our youth and now we have paced ourselves in order to bring you amazing content content on a daily basis um you know look the well let's just move to number two so one of the things about being alert and available all the time is that now you're going around all these different places and we have got the sightings and oh my God we are staying at the Encore Hotel and in between the Encore and the wind which is next door the NBA world has descended upon I have seen so when I went to wimbayama's game the first night um Rosa and I walk in and we are standing literally directly next to Jayco which was shocking considering you know many times when I've been around performers like that um there's like an aura around them but more importantly than the aura there are massive human beings surrounding them keeping you from getting anywhere near them it was so bizarre that J Cole was just like standing there like a regular guy yeah amongst people and I was like this is crazy like uh I told I told the story on the mismatch with uh with the O'Connor that when Drake Came to FedEx forum he had like five Orlando Paces surrounding them yeah and it was like literally the five biggest meanest looking human beings I've ever seen in my life as if to say don't get anywhere near this individual don't even don't even look at him J Cole was just like in the mix he's just kind of walking around mad at the people uh he's been here he's been bouncing around being an ambassador for the Grizzlies and the like um I I have now ridden the elevator with Miles Bridges wow Anthony black wow Dylan Brooks that was fun and who's the other one there was I think there was one oh Cole Anthony and Cole Anthony that's like a c-list of elevator people I haven't read the elevator with anybody but I have as I've been walking around I've seen their exposed drawer I've seen um I saw oh speaking of coaches I saw Darvin ham today yeah I sold Darvin ham and Mike Bibby I've seen I've seen tons of NBA players I've seen uh seen uh the agents a bunch of agents that I know uh some League Executives um and then easily the greatest sighting of my life at Summer League was last night I am playing a video poker machine by the way this dude runs over to us when this happens he Sprints over to us I had to he leaves the machines you will never believe who's sitting right next to me I mean it is the most shocking it is of all the people in the world it also just lets you know that truly everybody is out there anybody in basketball by the way like nobody with him okay he didn't have security no okay no alone what do you mean no hunched over playing the video poker hunch like a little like yes Coach K [Music] no no when I was in college we we Coach K basketball and Sega Genesis like every night and that's all I was running through about obviously he has been coach Team USA he's been one of he's probably the most high profile dude I think I honestly if you were going to say who the most recognizable coach is in the world gotta say college coach for sure in the world any coach seriously I don't know if there's anybody more recognizable than Coach K worldwide I mean it's probably dirty world world yeah but worldwide it'd probably be a soccer as as well in America you can't even Guardiola I bet you can't name a soccer coach by the way Pep Guardiola Jurgen klopp oh God shout out look look bro if we're talking about in America American coaches I mean the guy coach for 40 freaking years ESPN every single night yeah do you think your mom knows who Bill Belichick is yes 100 yes I think your mom knows uh no yeah my mom I think coach my girlfriend's also a good barometer I'm gonna text her and ask her she knows her coach my mom would recognize Coach K before she recognized Belichick but she she does know Belichick he really might be the most recognizable he looks like the Duke logo dude that's why as soon as I saw him I was like oh my God is the real question was he playing like Max credits I don't know was he like was he like 75 cents if Coach K was playing yeah there's a difference though Coach K has Mill ions on the freaking Wonka machine he was caddy cornered to me so I I wasn't looking at his machine oh my God per se uh you know other things that have gone on here besides all the societies oh we saw our uh buddy cash nasty the YouTube saw him out here um it's just been uh honestly like everybody has descended upon the city and so everywhere we go and everywhere we look you see somebody else um the other thing you've seen Chris has got Marvin Bagley a few times yeah bro I got to tell you a story about Marvin back after the show the other thing that has been so good about being responsible is we have partaken in better food this year than we have in years past because it's usually just drunken people round around find a hot dog find a piece of pizza find whatever we can at the store that's next but the sports bars to win that whole uh restaurant was really good Charlie's yeah we did that quickly one night but we did Carmines which is very famous in New York family style Italian we did that over at Caesars and it was oh my gosh amazing so much food absolutely amazing that was great uh Rosa and I went over and ate at Wolfgang pucks at MGM Grand today and that was outstanding awesome um and so yeah we've been able to at least get to some good restaurants uh thus far while we're in Vegas so that's something we haven't partaken in before but thank God and so and Devin told me that they have a one Oak oh my God so I would so you'll probably love this so apparently I went to my store yesterday's fish with my guy that owns it right next door to this Paul George's had a grand opening for his Barbershop oh wow so right next to the store there's like a bunch of people outside so he had uh Terrence man on the Pod today you Keenan Martin was over there I walk out the store I just see a bunch of NBA legends just hanging out because now Paul George's barber shop now is in Los Angeles he's recording recording the pot in the barbershop that's pretty cool so that's pretty oh we saw Kevin Hart recording a podcast Resorts World in the middle of the afternoon at two o'clock in the afternoon that was weird the only person's face I think I have seen more on like Billboards or things out here other than Gordon Ramsay is Kevin Hart birthday weekend up and down the strip there are the advertisements for Kevin Hart stuff other thing is you know so one of the things is when we're when we're going out to eat and we're getting all these Ubers and whatever um I am I have been incredibly irresponsible in the past about turning in any kind of expenses but now I've become much more responsible about that and we learned yesterday correct because somebody should do it for him now so he's responsible so I'm putting aside all of my receipts and one of the things that we learned is while I've been paying for meals and I'm going to turn in these receipts and whatnot that roser's receipts oh come on don't call me out on Monster energy drinks that he evidently turns into the finance department at our work upon me and Devin realizing that he turns in receipts for four dollars it is the most because I buy like two or three at a time so is it 13 worth of energy the fact my breakfast I mean pretty much the fact that Rosa turns in to our finance department Monster Energy Drink receipts is the most insane thing okay I have ever I cannot fathom our finance department looking through his receipts and seeing that he is written a Monster Energy they've told me food Monster Energy food food beverage food beverage you're not entertaining anyone eat food and beverage I mean that's wild as hell I want so badly for this to become a thing and look you're gonna get mad at me well they're probably going to now I'll be like we're not expensive come on I 100 want them to tell you that you cannot monsters and you fight it and we're going to court that no and you claim to the finance department that that was your breakfast and so that if you were turning in waffles it is you turning in to Monster energy drinks with 300 grams of caffeine each fifteen dollars worth of milk they're like they're like they're like 150. my Monster energy drinks every day I don't drink coffee in the morning I drink water down the street and get them uh yeah I'll walk right down yeah there's a little shop like right over like two minutes from us walking amazing it's literally the block over amazing yeah amazing So for anybody out there that's expensed things you just called me out good Rosa hasn't defeated they've told me she's like turn it in turn in everything for Kim and everything you can do a finance department Kim Karen they're all gonna be like what the hell yes when they listen to this show too and we know it's an outrage we know it's an outrage we're sorry that you have to deal with it Devin and I did not know we did not know until he told us yesterday that he expenses Monster Energy what's next what's next what's what's next my gambling losses I told you I told him I would give him 20 bucks if he went and bought condoms and put entertainment expensive entertainment yes he wrote what what's the opposite of Magnums so lifestyle lifestyle bro nobody wears condoms are trying to spread his seed in Las Vegas this guy's freaking Nick Cannon unbelievable unbelievable this is gross this is really taking a turn all right all right look number three the grizzly Summer League game all right so look speaking of people we saw Jaron Jackson Jr walking into the game with Dylan Brooks was the weirdest thing ever and funny I mean and then turn around and looking at me like bro you know what you're doing what you're doing so why they just they're boys I guess they're homies it had just been announced like the trade had just been announced and then Dylan Brooks came in and he was uh I mean every Grizzly assistant and Zach climbing and Taylor Jenkins and Zebo and the players that were on the court and everybody it was like Dylan was still part of the team yes if you ask the people at NBA social they were tagging Dylan Brooks and putting Grizzlies players hanging out trying to get y'all to collab you're like you know he's just doing the same stuff he was doing just kicking it with our players so wild I don't remember Dylan being at a bunch of them when he was on Earth he was there last year they were releasing on the court yeah they were dancing they didn't dance on the court but they did they did take a photo Zebo Dez Jaren and Zaire took a photo while the game was going on for that so there was Desmond Bain there there was Jaren Jackson there there was Dylan Brooks there there was obviously the front office guys were all there you told me Tillman's in town children's I think he got here today maybe throw up the X um any other Grizzlies yeah that's pretty much it though okay and Roser told me that John tweeted out but is he searching for Zaire slander because he only follows like a hundred people now I think it's because like so we posted that photo yesterday and there was people inside Grizz Twitter there were there was cropping out Zaire oh they were cropping cropping zero out of the phone [Music] got like a hold of it and he's like yo it's gonna be easy not the right thing it's just motivation from from 12 ski the zero slander is crazy can't wait for my little brother to provide himself when you get the chance to so yeah can I pull off brother no really I can't pull it off I can't say brother you can't say brother does not sound right yo boy regarding the game the game was not very good no it was tied going into the fourth quarter against the Bulls and then the Grizzlies were able to pull away in the fourth quarter Jackson for three and make some plays yeah GG Jackson they had obviously told GG Jackson to stop dribbling because I don't think he dribbled the ball no game Jake loravia decided okay then alterable oh my God the 50 crossover step back airball three was yeah it was something it was like all right come on he was trying to dump on people too I like I like the the aggressiveness like four hard tumbles yeah he did um but loravia look not his best game at all with the three for 13. um Lofton went to work when they didn't have that big uh singulu or whatever look at me like yeah yeah when they didn't have him in there dude it was just Loft and throw it to Lofton that because that guy actually was able to pick it up to handle was there was two guys in Phoenix Suns the jerseys that came and sat next to me and Rosa nerds on the step back three or I'm sorry on the walk-in three at the very beginning of the game the ravia like throws it back to Lofton he steps into a three and hits it and these guys they're nerds like nerds he's like he's really like that he's like that he's really like that and I said Rosa we gotta go find something I can't do this we got up immediately he's like he's like you think we can go get it if we can go sit down there there's media seats I'm like let's go you know what's funny bro you say that because you know that's like 95 of NBA Twitter I know like he's like he's really like like he's really like that he's really like that he's like that he's really like that that's when like uh oh he's like that Legion Hoops or yeah NBA Central or House of highlights should have tweeted out three pictures of Kenny Lofton Jr and said imagine three Kenneth often Juniors on the same team what that would be like yeah I will say this uh thank God for Jalen uh for Dale and Terry who was the draft pick last year for the Bulls he was five for 21. for them shooting daylight FDA All-Stars FTA All-Star uh I I hope Roddy's better he's one for six from three Roddy was rough loravia was rough Kenny Lofton was amazing he's he's like that um and really nobody else I mean GG knocking down the three threes was cool but it was a pretty lame game to be honest and I'm more hopeful for the next game yeah I'd like to see Kenny playing under control bro like because Rose you saw him that you did bro he was kind of like a chucker sometimes at the beginning of the Season he was he got better and better as it was a dismal debut but I will say I have never in all the years I've been coming to summer league and it's a lot have ever seen anything like I saw on Friday night for one by Yama by the time the game prior two was going on which featured a Jabari Smith Jr game winner and he was absolutely awesome for the Houston Rockets in their game scoot Henderson and Ahmed Thompson had everybody buzzing and then both of them got hurt in the game which is incredibly disappointing because that has been a overarching theme of what has taken place here when you've got two of the biggest and brightest stars in this draft class that everybody was looking forward to getting to see played in this summer league both of those guys got hurt in the first game didn't even make it through the first game um but the place is slammed for that game which was Portland and Houston and then the Victor win bayama thing was going to be taking place after that and the buzz in that Arena as he was walking out to the court yeah and in warm-ups and Roser and I were in the base on the Baseline and then we walked to the very top of the upper deck literally the last row of the upper deck and virtually every seat in that entire Arena was filled for a summer league game to see this guy and he was dismal he's like two for 13. he was a mess now he got dunked on too he did get dunked on now I will say the the Britney Spears hit me one more time yeah being put in the background of that dunk on the internet was absolutely hilarious uh now he has bounced back and he had 27-12 today and everyone is buzzing about how unbelievable he was and I believe that was I think the plan was that he was gonna play the first two so that was probably the last time yeah that he will play here but women uh Jabari Smith who I mentioned prior to not only did he have 30 plus in the first game and hit that game winner hit 38 today yeah he had 15 I I told you he had 15 four and four in the first quarter he was absolutely unbelievable he you know he reminded me so much of Jaren in the sense of the length and the ability to do stuff with the ball and that his defense could be ahead of his offense and that team was such a mess of a team last year he you know he's on with a bunch of Chuckers everybody just takes crap shots maybe the worst position for development you could ever be in last year on that Rockets team especially after coming from an Auburn team that had Pig guards and so he he was actually asked about why he's playing summer league and he said I'm 20 years old and we won like 20 games last season so why would I not play and try to get better if we're really young and play with these guys and try to develop some chemistry I love that kid coming out of college and I've still got all my stock and he uh he did not have the rookie season that impressed a lot of people but he has been amazing here in summer league thus far uh a lot of people buzzing about Chet Holmgren and Cason Wallace for Oklahoma City uh because Chet has caught his bearings you know what I mean it was rough you were in Utah it was rough at the beginning yeah it was rough um he was trying to dribble too much in Utah bro he was uh but he is long and he is not a he's not a shrinking pilot he blocks everything he plays hard too and he's not he he's not scared of contact no right he will get in the mix and so I think uh man that Oklahoma City team they are coming because geez do they have some young Talent on their team in between chat and then the kid from Santa Clara Jalen Williams the other Jalen Williams giddy gilgious I mean and now they're adding case and Wallace and people that were buzzing about uh yesterday who was really good uh and so they've kind of been uh some of the talk of course that kid we saw last year from Dallas Jayden Hardy um just is a bucket he's an absolute bucket for sure uh chiante George kid from Baylor um he had some big he had some he had some big ones in Utah uh at least one big one uh big second half in one of their games and then he had 33 and 10 assists just kind of running the offense through him and my God I don't care I don't care what court you're on if you've got 33 and 10 assists you're doing something yes man and he was knocking down threes and you know that will hardy did such a good job of putting Walker Kessler marking in and the other guys in good positions to play their best last year kids in a really good spot to be able to succeed and he could absolutely be one of those middle of the first rounders that it like people are like how how did that guy last that long uh because what did he end up going what George I think he's probably like what what did Utah end up with like 13 or 15 something like that I think is where he went maybe it might have been even a little bit lower I think it was lower than that because Cason Wallace was 10 and that was the Oklahoma City one and I think that was that that was a trade where did chiante George end up getting drafted it was in the top 20. I believe yeah um look I'm not trying to put him in this class but we know there have been a bunch of from the aforementioned Paul George to Kawhi Leonard the Amazon there have been a bunch of really good players that have come from that like 13 to 17 range yeah in the past and kante George maybe another one of those it's possible certainly um he was just absolutely Sensational another one to replay I think we play them in the next couple days Imani Bates had 27 today what 8-12 shooting bro yeah he played crazy this is perfect for a minivage 27 points 8-12 from the field six or seven from three when did we play this tomorrow tomorrow Monday yes yeah tomorrow easy money summer league is perfect efficient summer league is perfect they're gonna put Roddy on them and you know hey you know the funniest one that has taken place here is Orlando Robinson for Miami yeah he had 36 11 rebounds four blocks no four assists two blocks and with three or four from three and he's a seven footer overtime Elite now and I was talking about meeting the Thompsons and he was like oh they're great it's like they're great the family's great you know obviously he's uh he's very interested in what's going on with all the OTE guys and how they're doing but he's working there now um but Dave later was that he was at DePaul and then he left and he was back at the pole he said I felt like Dave vellino was around to Paul for a long time um anyway it's good to see him there's another guy that I saw uh while we were out here but anyways those are some of the guys that have gotten a lot of Buzz yesterday there was a million people at that game and then a million people trying to get in after that game was over it's crazy yeah it was wild I I there are so many people at Summer League the thing has just become like bigger and bigger and bigger and bigger deal and there's no seat there's no season no seriously no there's no seeds at these games even if they're not big games it used to be that we would sit I don't know halfway up at Cox Pavilion seriously yeah they're like have to go on the intercom after the game to say yo if you move yeah if you're leaving you gotta stay up like that's how it is if you're leaving you gotta stay out somebody's gonna take your spot like that's how I slammed it is in there I'll also say people from all around the country and all around the globe descend upon summer league and not trying to be full of ourselves actually yes to be full of ourselves shout out Mo the amount of people though that have either stopped me or said kind things when they've seen me walk by has been absolutely out of control um so cool whether it's our local show whether it's a mismatch there's been so many people I've met Fathers and Sons that are out there I've draws the other two are Monster drops Lakers Jazz Blazer yeah Suns and Lakers are huge huge but I mean like look I think that once it gets going people will start to pay attention to what's going on and look I'm I'm for them putting any Stakes on those regular season games yeah I I just hope it encourages guys to play more you know when you team that up with the when you team that up with the uh having to play so many games to get Awards I think it's another way to hope that guys are playing I'm for any kind of change because last year's regular season sucked that was trash West C is the group yes that's the group it's uh Kings Warriors t-wolves Thunder then Spurs oh that's great yeah that's that's the that's the one yeah and that's a draw yeah I mean because like you know you watch you you know those even Oklahoma City and the Spurs because of the young players on Oklahoma City and one pajama oh that's jet one by Yama Oklahoma Oklahoma City could be good like they can for sure for sure that would be good chat and wimby definitely is fun yes so you know you know what I'm for anything that is going to cause more competition and for some reason that the a regular season game becomes more than just one in 82. and so I think that at the beginning it's gonna be fun I think people I I don't think fans are going to care deeply about winning the thing because the result of winning the thing is that your guys get 500 Grand and nobody cares about basketball players getting paid more money they will in they will eventually make it make some Stakes like it matters like either you get a draft pick or it affects the playoff standings in some way or something where it affects fandom where a fan really wants his team to win it and not for bragging rights because there's no nobody gives a crap about oh well my team won mid-season like who cares but if it does mean something like have it means I yes it's regular season games but if the stakes are that it means something towards fandom it means something for the players now so you've got that down right there's a reason that the players should care and that's because a lot of their roster 500 Grand will make a big difference but there has to be a reason for the fans to care beyond just hey you should care yeah and so they'll eventually make Stakes with this that's what I'd guess but look I'm in favor of anything they can make the regular season encourage guys to play more and be more interesting because last year's regular season stunk and so I'm fine with it at least it you know they're Stakes there is even if they're made Upstate they're staked yes to those games that make it more fun uh especially if you're you know on those Tuesdays and Friday nights the other thing is I liked it there on Tuesdays and Fridays I don't mind that at all I always like when we have Friday games yeah because if we've got Friday games you still kind of get your weekend yes those Saturday games just split your weekend in half right because you can't really do anything for the second half of Saturday at all and so and then you're tired on Sunday yep right because you have the game the late night before um anyway it's uh number six it's been super fun being out here and the reason that we got here early on Friday was because Marcus Smart was going to be meeting with the media for the first time there's Boston people there there were Memphis people there and it was the first time we all got an opportunity to meet Marcus Smart and everything that the Boston people had told me was absolutely true he was so awesome absolute best I understand why all the media loves them I understand why all the fans love him and I'm here to tell you Memphis fans are going to be absolutely head over to heels for this guy not only as a player but as a guy and hearing him talk and here hearing kind of what he brings to the table for the Grizzlies anyways I had a chance to sit down with Marcus Smart for a one-on-one uh when we first got here to summer league and this is how it sounded hi we're here with Marcus Smart the newest member of the Memphis Grizzlies thanks for coming on all right take me through the day of the trade because you didn't talk about that that much at the press conference but I can only imagine as a member of the Celtics you're seeing all that first wave of news come through and you're like oh Malcolm brogdens trade it all maybe I should text him maybe I should call him whatever and then by that evening you realize you're a Grizzly so take me through what your day was like well it was it was crazy so I went to play golf I wouldn't play golf came home had a like a massive headache like just just pounding got my hair braided I fell asleep last thing I remember is they're finalizing the Malcolm Brogden trade um and then about two hours later my fiance is waking me up and saying I've been traded and I'm like I woke up and I was like stop playing like my head's hurt like it's not the time to be playing games so I went back to sleep and she's like no you got to get up like you've been traded I'm like really I said but what happened to the Malcolm music then she told me you know everything it fell through and I was like oh okay and then instantly right then there we started looking at the house so how did you find out how did she find out so she found out um my agent called her but she also seen it from Shams she's seen that Shams said that uh the they fell through it the Celtics have wait the agent couldn't get a hold of you yeah so he called the girl yeah I was knocked down so he's and she was just like oh why is why is blue trying to call it hello you ain't even got to say it we've been treated okay and she it was like she just had a feeling like we it was just a the day was just it was a weird day for us but uh but yeah that's how it happened and I woke up and then like I said we just started looking for houses in Memphis important details what did you shoot what did I shoot for no that day golf you said I went and played golf and then I had a terrible head that's what I'm saying that's what I'm saying I told you the whole day was messed up about two years now yeah two years yeah me and my friends would go out there um anytime we can and I love it but then you were drained so you were just passed out I was just passed out the whole thing did you cry I did cry you did I have cried I have cried you know I've cried uh because you know um the special relationship I had with the guys you know I grew up with Jalen and Jason you know their whole career and all those other guys even now you know and uh you know we like I said before a lot of those guys Al Jalen a couple of Jason and those guys when my mom passed away they were there you know so they've been through been through tough times with me so it was tough um and not only that I've been there my whole life so that was tough but um I also cried because I was excited as well because now I get to you know like I said start a new journey in my life you know um I've done everything that I could do with that team um you know Jalen and Jason are great players and now it's you know their time to to Really you know grow into their own and you know that's okay that's what it is but like I said it was just tough leaving those guys what was your opinion of the Grizzlies because let's just be honest you guys have killed the Grizzlies every time we've played for like the last five years and so I'm thinking to myself hold on now does Marcus Smart think that we're bombs because it has been the biggest problem if you asked any Grizzlies fan the Celtics games have been the worst games yeah oh yeah two times a year it's just been a problem you guys have probably played much more competitive games against a lot worse teams but for whatever reason the Celtics have always had the Grizzlies number and so I've wondered what your opinion was as compared to maybe the league at large no we trust me nobody in this league thinks that Memphis Grizzlies are just bugs I promise you that if you guys did we never thought you guys we we actually we actually we actually had so much respect for the roses that we had to come out and play because we know if we didn't then it'll look bad on us and it could turn ugly for us so uh that's the respect that Memphis Grizzlies has and that's respect that they're going to continue to yeah and one you guys know like you a lot of those games there was like a game on a Super Bowl Sunday yeah a lot there were a lot of a lot of games Bad Boys a lot of bad words for the Grizzlies when you think about those teams and you see them and you see how young they are and they know now you've been in the league for nine years and you've been a voice for a team that's been in the NBA Finals um I know you said you kind of like figure out your role with the Grizzlies but who they're counting on you to be a veteran leader for the team that a team that needs people to look up to who were the guys that you looked up to like who were those guys to you when you first came into the league what do you think back so for me you know I came in um right before they uh traded Rondo I got to talk with Rondo for a little bit nothing crazy you know what I'm saying the time that I was there Brandon Bass was one of the guys on the team as well and surprisingly not tayshawn princess my team at one point I actually played with GPS so um and you know but I've had a bunch of good vets but Isaiah Thomas is a really good friend of mine he was a really good vet to me Avery Bradley was actually a good vet but uh you know I've I've had great vets throughout my whole career you know that you know really cared for it you know what I'm saying like nah don't do this do it like this or this is how you need to go about things or this is what you need to do or you know don't worry about that it was you know everything was motivational to get you ready to take that next step in your career and so it was great so to for me to be in that position and to come into a team who's very young who's very talented who's very hungry and is very close to doing something special to be able to be that vet it's you know that's an honor well and you're a guy that's overcome stuff in your own life and you have not never been bashful to talk about it you've seen the news with the best player with job right until you know kind of what your walk into I mean where Jazz gotten suspended he's made some errors in judgment he you know he apologized and now all he can do is the actions are all they could do back it up but when you think about you and Rose coming in and people think like hey not only for Morant but all those young guys on that team that you guys can have a profound impact on them do you think that is a do you think that's a responsibility that you have now like that you are not not the one that keeps everybody in line but that you are that veteran leader for this team like has that been expressed that like Hey we're bringing you in because we know what you're about definitely it definitely has and you know that's who I am you know that's who I was with Boston and you know that's that's one of the reasons why you know my name and uh my reputation perceives me so much is because I am that guy you know but I'm also not the guy to just talk about I'm going to go out there and show you my actions as well and then you know to have a guy in D Rose coming back to Memphis you know what I'm saying who's very loved we all know what he has done in his career and what he's done here when he was at Memphis University and things like that and just the the the connectivity that he has with the city that's going to be more just as important than anything than anybody actually realizes um and you know with a guy like me and D Rose who's played who's been through it we have our names and our reputation carry weight so you know when you got a younger group to be able to follow you actually got somebody you can look up to you know it's hard to look up and follow somebody that is trying to do the same thing you did and hasn't done anything better than you you know and it's hard you know so um it's it's definitely a responsibility that me and D Rose have and trust me we definitely going to take it take that put our hard hat on and get to work what was your impression of Taylor we loved him loved it I loved it I loved it he reminds me of one of my AAU coaches and that's a good thing you know what I'm saying so um just the way he he approaches the game you know it's theatrics on the sideline you know really enjoying you know his team success and uh and those guys so I loved it I that are out here you can go to um you can go to the Michael Jackson show you can go to The Beatles show you can go to all the circus oil so late things but like in terms of like ax um they're epic comedians that have been out here Theo Von was out here uh I saw um there's a bunch of there's a bunch of there's a bunch of like Comedians and that kind of stuff and but in terms of like the big ax and the prices I have never never seen anything like ever that's crazy I thought because I mean I guess the prices on that but like even like bottles of water like I just want a bottle of water it's team that's not like won a title then it's like all right what's the worth of the guys that have won the title right like you know if you're sitting around your Frank Vogel like hey what do I get what a Nick nurse do I get right like it's like yeah you can't set the market at something like that it's crazy so at least now like the highest paid guy but one of the things that I've talked I talked to about uh Kevin on the mismatch is it's very weird for the first 20 years of me covering the NBA I never knew what any coach made ever and now it's like become popular to like report these things and I know it all comes from Agents but they're reporting what these guys make and I do wonder what effect that has on the coaching profession because I'm not sure that coaches all new what each other made could be a bad thing right could you not be a good thing I mean when you're talking about that kind of money being thrown around I got no problem look I've always said it doesn't affect their salary cap just paying whatever you want so we got a good coach yeah and if you can get a great coach to pay them right but uh you know now you see that kind of like it's kind of like Nick Saban being the highest paid college coach it's right it's all you know I mean like that's that's the right thing and so I'm glad that Popovich got that contract because if somebody's gonna get paid that kind of money it needs to be him or spoolster yeah right yes those are the guys that need to get paid that kind of money um anyway bro gonna be coaching five more years how old is he now he's in his 70s yeah Popovich is sold huh Popovich is old How old How old if he if he coaches out this kind 74 he coaches out he'll be 80. 80 years old his birthday is January 28 1949. I wonder who has been coaching all right hold on 1996. I'm gonna look up the oldest NBA coach ever Brown huh QB Brown there's Papa this is the oldest ever bro is that true yeah at 74 at 72 he became the oldest NBA head coach ever damn he took the honor away from [ __ ] Brown yeah yeah I was like you he was old as hell when he was with us Brown was 71. when he coached the Grizzlies oh 405 yep and when Papa fish turned 72 he took the he took the moniker away from [ __ ] Brown that's correct QB Brown is a two-time NBA coach of the year 1978 and 2004. Popovich doesn't feel as old nah he looks like jigsaw though I know I tell you this but he yo but he but he he doesn't dye his hair you know he's around the same age as Saban yeah that feels crazy coach k76 is that right he's the same age as Pop they said I read this this story on Nick Saban's Youth Camp yeah and they said that he at his youth camp they're like it is he talks to these kids with except he doesn't curse but what he expects from his players he expects from these campers and he said it's because these kids parents are paying for their children to get the Alabama football claiming through one of his attorneys he never resigned as the men's basketball coach he's requesting a return to power at the Helm of the program yes there was a letter from his attorney to West Virginia's of presidents Gordon gay uh said that uh and then Metro News uh also reported that there was a rebuttal from uh WVU to huggin's lawyer who apparently is working independently from other Council that has been in communication with the school leaders in recent weeks he lost his job in June one after each day he was put in handcuffs he had a blood alcohol a .21 oh my God my God was bless three times yeah the legal limit yeah per the arrest complaint when it asked for repeat ing by officers to identify what city he was in Huggins did not state that he was in Pittsburgh the next day it was announced that he was no longer the coach and it said that uh today I have submitted a letter to the president vice president Ren Baker our mobile buddy informing them of my resignation and attention to retire as the men's basketball coach immediately read the statement from Huggins and then it says um in Friday's letter to ghee however this new lawyer says coach Huggins does not desire litigation rather he's simply looking for a correction of the clear breach of his employment agreement with WVU so weird the whole thing yeah is weird and who knows what this new lawyer is like who knows but just drift off into the sunset of bubble yeah bro this is now just yeah I mean he already had the homophobic thing on you know the radio earlier in the summer it's a mess I hate to go I hate
