Ugh, I'm still not over Congratulations, but curiosity got the best of me and this was a solid video. His quest is misguided though - I'd say there isn't one big reason BTS are as successful as they are now, rather a near miraculous constellation of smaller reasons.

Overall good. Great catches On what makes them popular: social justice, social media, great lyrics, talented members, High fan interactions (them interacting with fans and fans interacting with each other). I’d add natural actors. They have that stage and screen presence that translates from maga HD content to grainy hand held footage. And that they get along with the other members incredibly well and have made sacrifices for each other that continued their success.

But really BTS makes you happy. You are who you most want to be when you listen and watch them. And it’s more important than any statistical or data driven point.

Man, I haven't watched one of Dave's videos in a while. 😬 Sorry, Dave, if you're reading this. I like that rather than reacting to videos he's reacting to articles and reddit posts about them, it's like watching my own inception into the fandom. For me, the quality of the rap line first caught my interest. From there I discovered that I liked their whole discography and then I discovered mountains of great content that showed off their cool personalities and before I knew it I was invested.

I've never been a fan of a boy band before. Is it common that people ask why are they popular?

hey it's your boy male feminist here today we're gonna be taking a look at the worldwide phenomena BTS see t-f BTS are the biggest or at least the most interacted with boy band or group of any kind in the world to get across just how successful they are billboard has this chart called the social 50 the social 50 basically as I understand it measures the kind of interactivity of fans with the social media BTS have been number one on this list for a hundred and twenty three weeks they are beating out how see Billy Eilish black pink EXO ariana grande this is insane the scale of it if you go to their Twitter 400,000 retweets 500,000 retweets the scale of this is insane so it's just a bunch of cute Korean boys this is a ridiculously large group and what's most interesting to me about them is the scale and obsessiveness of their fan base let's get them to 600 mil three months ago they succeeded with that clearly see they're working towards getting them to 1 billion views they're all obsessed with the numbers and trying to get these guys incredibly successful why is this happening today we're going to try to figure out how they got to this insane level of success and more importantly which one of these attractive Korean boys is my bias if you're not familiar for the uninitiated bias in kpop the member of an idol group that is your favorite this term is derived from having a bias towards a particular person to start with we should probably figure out how they got started how they got that successful compared to other kpop bands but also which one of the members is the coolest hopped onto the kpop wiki BTS also known as bangtan boys and beyond the scene is a seven member boy group under big HIT Entertainment as I understand it big HIT Entertainment hadn't really had that many huge successes or anything there were a small indie company supposedly huh I found this article which should help us a little bit here's how each BTS member was discovered and signed a big hit we can figure out how they got started and learn all the members at the same time okay and that way we can decide if you haven't heard of BTS you've probably been living under a rock or you've just recently woken up from a coma let's take a look at the origins of BTS and how each member was discovered number one most importantly RRM now I remember this dude from the songs here's the cool deep voice and he's the rapper so so far he is my favorite kim nam nam june kim namjoon giving them June fell in love with rap after hearing epik high's fly for the first time when he was in sixth grade I know that song wait a second is this the same dude this gives me a lot of hope having grown up to be perhaps more of a nerd than this dude I can relate I can really relate he began rapping on his own and he started a career as an underground rapper under the name wrench Randa I'm sorry what and now the bus is please go I don't know I'm just loving rap and all the bosses yo can go take a nap no and all the bosses please go take it now clearly this is a lyrical genius we are dealing with still better than I was when I started RM decided to join a rap crew called yo-yo which consisted of some of the top underground rappers he started his career trying to do the conventional hip-hop kind of thing da with his reputation growing RM was invited to audition for an underground hip hop agency this is where he meant untouchable sleepy who was a judge at the audition sleep he was so impressed by our M's rapping skills he saved his phone number and passed it along to producer King Shi hai you he's the founder and co-ceo of big HIT Entertainment okay through the introduction RM ended up auditioning for big HIT Entertainment and became the first member to join BTS in 2010 so he was the first member okay we're moving on number 2 Suga originally from hi goo career Min Jung ji aka sugar was active in the underground hip-hop scene as a producer and rapper going by the name of gloss he began performing in high school and made a name for himself gloss the hardest rapper of them all and I want to talk about having a good rapper name it wasn't just his rapping that was getting attention was his hair sugar had begun to establish himself as a producer composing beats for local artists in his hometown of high gear he has produced and written lyrics for a variety of tracks on all of bts's albums so he's a rapper and a producer I can relate to this game or was he a nerd in school though that's not quite nerdy enough oh is this the audition I can see it are you gonna have to sing as well yeah that's super awkward having to stand in front of a bunch of executives and be sexy although reports indicate that sugar wanted to be just a producer he was convinced into joining BTS in 2010 to this day sugar jokes that Banksy Hyeok tricked him into joining the group well he was still a trainee sugar was one of the four BTS members who were often seen dancing for glams live performances of glamorous I've heard this is relatively common where smaller artists will support larger artists as backing dancers to kind of get used to being on stage and stuff like that also made a brief cameo in the I'm Dewan music video next up Jaeho don't think this one's a rapper we've had two rappers normally they have two rappers in everything I think prior to his debut with BTS song who's sure aka j-hope was a dancer he had always loved to dance and he even joined a dance crew called neuron in his hometown of Gwangju career sick moves bruh because of his love for dancing he auditioned for JYP entertainment although he passed the first few rounds he eventually got cut from the auditions despite years of training however j-hope was almost left out of bts's lineup until RM convinced big hit as well as j-hope himself that BTS needed him he returned to the group in the rest is history huh sounds like RM is a bit of the kind of leader next up jin it's an attractive man the fourth member to join BTS Kim Seok Jin aka Jin had a different casting experience from the other members Jin was originally casted on the streets by SM Entertainment SM Entertainment have done some huge artists write FX SHINee EXO FX are brilliant by the way he never followed up with the company because he thought it was a scam and they were a massive freakin entertainment company that's hilarious he got Street custard again when he was a college student a representative from big HIT Entertainment saw Jin as he was exiting a bus and convinced him to audition for big hit Jin had no prior experience singing or dancing because he was an acting major big HIT Entertainment had other plans however and he ended up becoming a trainee for BTS rumor has it that Jin became the singer that he is today through hard in practice that's really cool if that's the case the maknae of the group Jun jungkook maknae for all you scrubs out there is the equivalent term of being the youngest member though he's the baby of the group am i pronouncing maknae right my name he's the money of the group audition for the third season of superstar K in his hometown of Busan Korea although he was eliminated from the auditions various agency recruiters saw something special in him to his his audition excuse me - geez speak up a little bit excuse me jungkook was scouted by seven different entertainment agencies including jyp fnc and starship entertainment the reason he chose big hair which was a smaller company at the time over the other major companies was because he was so impressed with RM and his rapping skills so RM has a lot of that would be fact for when it comes to the formation of BTS V so this is the cool one huh that fricking Axl Rose headband kim taehyeong aka V has stated in multiple interviews that he grew up with hardly any money he was raised by a family of farmers in high GU and his childhood dream was to pursue music so a little farmers boy with that dream in mind V picked up playing the saxophone in high school helliya his father encouraged him to learn an instrument if he was serious about pursuing musics and that's what really stood out to me in BTS the fact that they had large saxophone solos one day he followed a friend to a big HIT Entertainment audition he'd only come to the audition to support his friend but someone from the rookie development team saw V and urged him to audition so he called his dad got permission and then auditioned on the spot it was the only person to pass the audition in hi goo that day that's gotta sting a little bit and 7 Jimin oh the final member to join BTS Park Jimin had a natural talent in dance one of his dance teachers urged Jimin to audition for big HIT Entertainment I could after being encouraged by his teacher he went an audition he passed the audition in Busan and moved to Seoul to become a trainee jimin became the final member of BTS because of his natural skills it looks like a cute little leafy type there a current I gotta say I'm sticking with my guns our RM is looking like the the bias right now particularly with that photo so what about big HIT Entertainment how did they get started founded in 2005 and 2007 big HIT Entertainment was near bankruptcy due to the success of early groups bang was able to keep the company afloat and later created the group BTS in 2013 varying reports consider the current total value of the company at roughly 1 trillion Korean Won okay that's about a billion dollars still almost a billion dollars from a freaking boyband essentially many consider the company's profit in both the Western and Eastern markets big hits relatively lenient policies towards their idols creativity and innovative music styles to be a cornerstone of the labels success why does that help them to be more successful than other artists I'm assuming what they mean by that is giving them more creative control over the songs they make maybe these guys are experimenting more I don't know that's an interesting fellow so now we've kind of established who they are why are they so much more successful than all the other Korean boy bands by BTS so pale famous feminine perfect why are they so perfect oh my guy many of the things that worked against BTS ended up becoming their strengths internationally they did not have a viral hit or a national song I think this was actually a good thing a viral hit like psy is great while it lasts but it's not really sustainable and you don't really build a good fan base BTS doesn't have a viral song but they do have many Stan attractor songs and built a large loyal fan base many armies don't even think DNA is their best song but they still made it chart for a month on Hot 100 Christ I can't think of any other boy bands that have massive viral hits though but that's an important point that it wasn't just trying to focus on a viral hit a viral hit will kill your career get a job one of the biggest appeal nowadays is that they are an amazing underdog story BTS a group from a no-name company who through hard work and talent gained popularity to rival the big three that's a powerful story that everyone loves also although there are many idols in small companies BTS stood out because the members are very talented in telling their stories sudden lighting change sorry the light went out I don't know if this makes sense how can telling the story be effective to anyone who isn't already interested enough to want to translate the lyrics and read them instead a variety we get a lot of personal content made by BTS in the form of bangtan bombs run BTS and other social media what's a bangtan bomb - gasps surprise birthday party so this is the two rappers hanging out around a birthday cake JK rubs yeonggi's but before he spanks him is there another reason they're successful with the okay so yeah I'm just gonna guess this is really chill vlog e stuff that's a crazy amount of views just think of the amount of work freaking Logan Paul had to put in to get those kinds of views he would have to freaking shoot himself against a window in front of a bunch of kids to get those kinds of views whereas these guys are making a cake so okay it's been half the video and it's just this dude sleeping I'm clearly going the wrong direction with my content if you really want to understand my BTS is so popular I feel like you need to see the fan culture because it's the frenetic fan base that's been pushing BTS forwards if you search BTS on Twitter what kind of stuff do we get Jesus Christ how much is being posted all the time so all this was posted in the last hour and 34 new results yeah that's a pretty intense audience why is BTS so different from your usual celebrities artists or groups one that sticks out to me from other groups visibly is that they are the best performance if they are the best if most people tend to rate them the best then that's a good reason for why they are so successful they are more entertaining they are better dancers or better singers and stuff like that it could be the case although I'd be surprised that a small label was able to get the best people a lot of this stuff that I'm reading isn't really giving examples of other artists that are not as good in certain ways I've given the army a chance let's give the BBC a chance see if my tax dollars are going to good use they've produced material around various themes starting with the school trilogy that's interesting I've made songs with the odd ones out and Jaden animations both of them have had very successful videos talk about school I have had a very successful video talking about school I feel like when you bring school into a topic and you and that goes out to young people it's so relatable to them perhaps that is part of their success that they chose to focus on a theme like that well many k-pop songs are about relationships and love BTS cover subjects that other bands may not like bullying elitism and mental health ah that might make more sense actually the fans who are hardcore enough to listen to the music and translate the music to understand it will then find lyrics that are more relatable okay I can I can see something there if that's the case if other large kpop bands generally always do talk about love and relationships if they're talking about things that are more relatable particularly to the kinds of people who have the time and lack of friends perhaps that it takes to be this invested online that helps you to find new friends and if they're talking about issues like bullying and mental health which those kinds of people will have perhaps that relates so much that makes people want to support yoga told BBC Radio 1 I think was so lucky to be born at the right time without social media we wouldn't have been so successful pop culture expert kim han-sik says BTS are actually managed by quite a small agency and are allowed to do what they want a bit more they are really successful because they know how to interact with their fans where do they interact with their fans online I have seen them just posting a bunch of stuff in it's one way but where do they have it two ways that what is EXO's Twitter like AIDS so this is like the next most popular boy band at the moment from Korea Jesus look at the scale difference these guys on they aren't even at a hundred thousand retweets what is veal eyes it's like a Korean streaming thing this is owned by some of the labels or something so it's just a big South Korean live video streaming service it allows Korean based celebrities to broadcast live video and live chat with fans what records of BTS broken first kpop group to speak at the United Nations okay I've got to see this there's gonna be some peace and love to the whole world kind of stuff Thank You mr. secretary-general that's our M it's my boy we truly have the best fans in the world they're some of the only people who can say that with statistical backing I used to look up at the night sky wonder you God stop let's speak it like the rapper kind of voice II still look out a night sky in wonder BTS has become artists in those huge stadiums and selling millions of Ellen's right now but I am still an ordinary 24 year old guy we do play a rivas but I'm just a normal fella he comes across very kind and thoughtful I would imagine the average person there are some people are gonna be cynical about it and to be fair how can you ever know when it gets to this level of success if someone is going to be affected by that kind of Fame we started to hear remarkable stories from our fans all over the world how our message helped them overcome their hearts is in life and start loving themselves those stories constantly remind us of our responsibility there they said it reminds us of our responsibility they are taking responsibility there the implication is we are hugely successful we have a responsibility to try to do good with that there are a lot of people say I am NOT a role model I just make what I like one side you might have people like BTS who are at the United Nations and two other side of it you might get people like Eminem if they're just releasing what they want and they get that successful it's not up to them to become a freakin United Nations ambassador I like to ask all of you what is your name what excites you and makes your heart beat I'm just imagining all of these fricking world leaders and stuff listening to a boy band member say what makes your heart beat no matter who you are where are you from your skin color your gender identity that would help mentioning gender identity and race that's currently a huge issue young people really relate to that kind of stuff if they're talking about that more frequently than just here that will contribute I really want to believe that this is earnest it's difficult when it's when there's a company behind it I know that over there the term Idol is just a word for successful it's more of a kind of descriptive term to me calling yourself an idol is like saying I am a god anyway religion are they religious I wonder if that helps in American atheist hell yeah my boy it's funny I was actually getting a little bit invested they're like oh please be an atheist yeah I think this is the dude I can relate to the most so I think we've got we've gone through quite a lot of the different factors that have influenced this potentially to end I need to confirm my bias wait that's bad isn't it I need to check whether my bias is accurate I'm gonna see who is the coolest member once and for all and see whether anyone is cooler than RM if not he regains the title yeah okay I like the humor I love my they are funny yeah BuzzFeed has found a format that works throw puppies at famous people very touchy next comment over there is this fanservice why what's this they're just still sleeping in a room is that the content this looks like Korean variety show kind of editing Riot Games V live okay so they do this kind of stuff on V live this is fascinating this is like freaking TV quality content going out on a streaming site in Korea there is a show called Running Man which is hilarious my sister showed it to me it's a variety show and this is so reminiscent of that kind of stuff in that show it was a bunch of comedians would get in some celebrities and they do kind of games and stuff like that this is like a slightly lower budget version of that but still the same kind of quality they've done a lot of stuff Jesus Christ okay they've got 13 million followers 19 hours ago five million plays the chat is still going on live-streaming I think that's a big part of it you know to EXO do stuff on here nowhere near the same kind of numbers if EXO does the same thing why is it that BTS is so much more successful I thought I had something that but this is an important part of what made them successful it looks like V live that's super interesting I think I'm gonna call it you may have a couple of cheesy phrasings and how in his speeches but he's clearly a good rapper and seems like a good dude RN is officially my BTS bias and with that this video must come to a close yeah the track I likes was a dope can't play you any of it because they'll take all the money from this video with here's my boy RM in a nice I had the Vox with misinterpret let's phrase it that way just for watching fellas if you are familiar with BTS or like pop in general I'd be super curious to know specific examples of what other bands do not do that BTS do do I really want to understand this what makes people like things hope you've all learned something today most importantly my bias thanks to any army who are here I hope I didn't her if ik Lee offend you see time hey there fellas my sister Hannah so as you all know for every single video I ever do now as you all know this is the period where you guys correct me and tell me all the horrific things that I got wrong in the last video so if you notice anything wrong I got in this video make sure you put it down in the comments and I'll atone for my sins and the next one so yeah the first mistake I made in this video was having a tiny image of a member of BTS in the background for a small segment of the sponsor video yeah thanks for that since that meant a large amount of the comments were just about that bold of you to assume that I'm smart enough to notice your mistakes yeah I guess I didn't really think this through maybe you're all idiots oh yeah here's one that I saw a few people saying are things you did wrong doubt yourself yeah that's about it you are not a failure you're super talented and inspiring person all things you've said wrong oh the gyro failure all that's so kind let's hear what I said do you feel like a failure me - do you feel like a failure logically I know I'm not a failure however I feel like a failure and that's what counts also there was the the problem of in the sponsored segments I mentioned this dude senior developer at Microsoft using an Apple Computer anyway on to the actual mistakes in the video there was one section where I was talking about prohibition in America it was a really good video thing that there was an eleven billion dollar loss and I said that that was less than the hundred billion dollar loss from the dude in app who dude who sold it thank you I forgot to account for inflation so it turns out 11 billion US dollars in 1930s monies is around 160 billion u.s. dollars today see assume that the websites you're reading could account it for inflation yeah I didn't think about that when boyinaband doesn't account for inflation or that relatable moment if he owned 10% of the company in the beginning that doesn't mean those amount of shares would still be worth 10% as the company most likely created more share there is the potential that it wasn't 10% because they may may have made more shares than that hope that makes the dude feel a little better about himself yeah yeah he's still lost out on a horrific amount of money I know the mistake I made I said the hungry had a hyperinflation of currency and they were burning their money it was so bad turns out they were burning their money because of a currency reform Thank You speech free rolling stock so they did have a massive hyperinflation after the war but they also decided to burn a bunch of money when they changed their notes over okay corrected I don't remember a lot of comments saying Davy did something dumb just saying one trillion equals one thousand billion a hundred billion does not equal one trillion what you're referencing is a one point this was a trillion dollar company so that would be a hundred billion dollars mistake however this dude had 10% share in Apple a 10% of a billion is a hard way 10% of a trillion is a hundred billion you're wrong pie booga you're wrong pizza pie three four eight and you are wrong zack freaking monday definitely not a mistake on my part for not making that clear also they pointed out when I was looking at the biggest company a few people said I was just looking at the wrong thing I was looking at the map of the revenue rather than the market cap right so Apple is near the top I was kind of right about thinking that difference between market cap and revenue silly me and then a bunch of you pointed out not a mistake but a fun little story that probably should have included a dude who had like a [ __ ] ton of bitcoins on an external hard drive that he ended up throwing away and several of you were saying that he tried to dig through a bunch of dumps to try and find it so yeah if you want to see me make these mistakes and more head over to that video if you give me your information it was really useful for those people who provided the sources made it easy for me to double-check cheers for watching and I'm also here alright bye thanks
