China may be able to gain more leverage over Russia during SCO summit, says analyst

I think that for China and bringing us back to this to this SEO form China has a big opportunity uh at this meeting in the sense that it's been a founding member of SEO as a dominant member of the group and as Russia becomes more dependent on China for support economic support and so on it's China's gaining more leverage over Russia and I think that might make it easier for China to carve out even more influence and carve out more influence vis-a-vis Russia within the SEO so even though this Summit will be a virtual meeting I think that Beijing will have an opportunity to step up and really become one of the key players within this group especially as Russia's relative influence uh begins to what begins to receive so that's something to watch out for in terms of what president XI has to say in his remarks at this Summit that could go a long way I think yeah I want to pick up on what you're saying there because no doubt the developments out of Russia is something China's watching very closely and as you say it does certainly help some of that economic dependence in a way but China also needs a strong Ally in order to achieve its goals so how do you think it's really watching this situation well you know I think that it's tough I mean the china-russia relationship is is complex right now I think that China likes the fact that uh Russia is more dependent on it the leverage that it gets from that but I think China doesn't want Russia to become a ward of the Chinese State much like you know North Korea on some levels have become so dependent on on China that that makes it difficult for Beijing it prefers not to and not to see that but you know at the end of the day China can depend on so many Partnerships around the world not security Partnerships for that matter but it has close commercial ties with so many countries because you know the world wants to engage with with China at least commercially given you know what China is in terms of the power particularly as an economic power
