[Music] foreign I remember the night like it was yesterday the night a man from Ivory Coast cemented himself as a legend but there was a day in my life I knew I'd never forget I was sitting in my living room with my family and the football match was on Chelsea versus Liverpool it was titled the 20 million pound shootout a chance to compete in Europe's Top Flight the Champions League two of the most vital days in Chelsea's history in 2003 a man by the name of Ken Bates sold Chelsea Football Club for a fee of 60 million pounds to a Russian billionaire how did this one man obsessed with perfection obsessed with Glory take a team that was riddled in debts on financial crisis to cut glory and the brand on par with the likes of Real Madrid and Manchester United so ladies and gentlemen boys and girls sit back relax put your seatbelt on that's right foreign [Music] before 2003 Chelsea were making a slow rise in football once again in the summer of 96 Dutch Legend rude Hurley was appointed as a player manager and he added several top-class players to the side the team emerged as one of England's top sides and gained a reputation for playing neat entertaining and attractive football That 96-97 season Chelsea made sixth place in the league their highest placing in seven years but it was their journey in the FA Cup that finally brought Victory to the West London side they won the FA Cup beating Middlesbrough 2-0 Chelsea's first major trophy in 26 years [Music] [Applause] this is petresco [Music] Zola that's it any dude has faded two for Chelsea copies this that's it the FA Cup belongs to Chelsea long last 26 year weight for a major trophy is over a green finale to ruther's first season as manager after that Chelsea won both The League Cup beating Middlesbrough two-nil once again at Wembley and winning the UEFA Cup winners cut with a victory over stuttgard after a goal by their main man Zola but I was on a warm night in Monaco where Chelsea faced off against entered the New Millennium they brought in only one single trophy the FA Cup once again and that would be their last Taste Of Glory for a long while solar [Applause] James no was it it has been given the FA Cup is back in Chelsea hands foreign [Applause] comes Italian manager Claudia Ranieri now Ranieri didn't waste no time and made a few signs of his own but even those players and all those goals wasn't enough to help as Chelsea only finished sixth place the very next season only little to no improvement was made Chelsea finished in sixth place once again the fans were beginning to grow tired of Ranieri and the players but it was on the final day of the o203 Season where the tide had completely shifted Chelsea will battle it out with Liverpool in a thrilling match dubbed the 20 million pound matchup two teams fighting for a place in a champions league and compete against Europe's Elite Chelsea desperately needed this win as will be the huge difference in them staying up as a top ranieri's team have qualified for the champions foreign [Music] Abramovich was born on the 24th of October 1966. he started various businesses and one of them was selling rubber duck in his apartment with with his first wife he then spread out his wealth and moved over into trading an oil in 1995 Abramovich and his partner Boris berazovski acquired a controlling interest in the large Oil Company sivnev each partner paid a hundred million dollars and rapidly turned that investment into billions by 2003 Roman was richer than ever so we set out on a mission to buy a football club he wanted to buy a club in England after he was impressed with the sport following the Champions League match between United and Real Madrid in April 2003. in an interview with the BBC he said his reasons for buying a club was that he was bored and wanted a new challenge now there were a few clubs on his radar such as Manchester United Tottenham Hotspur and even Portsmouth City but it was Chelsea Football Club that attracted him for two reasons the great matchup versus Liverpool on that final day and also the situation the club was in Chelsea were in a major financial crisis as they win 80 million pounds of debt and in comes Roman the Savior who buys the club from Ken Bates for 60 million pounds after just a 15-minute phone call and now the new owner of Chelsea Abramovich is now the richest owner in premier league history his vision his goal to make Chelsea a worldwide brand on par with footballing dynasties such as Manchester United and Real Madrid but first stop conquer England and now we enter the most aggressive transfer market football had ever seen let the Abramovich era begin the first signing Glenn Johnson for six million pounds up next we have Jeremy and Wayne Bridge for seven million pounds Damien Duff for 17 million pounds Joe Cole for 6.6 million pounds Sebastian Veron for 15 million pounds Adrian Mutu 15.8 million pounds Alexi smearton for 3.5 million pounds Hernan Crespo 16.8 million pounds Neil Sullivan for 500 000 pounds the man himself Claude machielli for 60 million pounds now a lot of money was spent but that only meant Ranieri had more weight and pressure on his shoulders to deliver a great season for the new owner because one thing about Roman is that he doesn't do well with failure and that is something that will come to see within the coming years Chelsea still held their own during the season and ended up finishing runners-up in the league below the invincibles Arsenal their best finish since the old first division in 1955. after being knocked out in the fifth round of the FA Cup to Arsenal and the quarter-finals of The Carling cop to Aston Villa Chelsea really only had one trophy to fight for the champions league but unfortunately they just fell short losing to Monaco in the semi-finals left Chelsea trophyless That season on May 31st 2004 Abramovich would fire saudio Ranieri something that would become a trend for him all of English football waited for who would be the next man to achieve Roman's dreams [Music] I'm not one of of the bottle I must I think I'm a special one after successfully winning the champions league and the league with Porto Mourinho had his eyes set on a new challenge English football and challenge himself he did the man who led Chelsea to arguably their greatest ever Premier League season because what I'm saying is true I'm European Champion so I'm not one of of the bottle I must I think I'm a special one that sum of 2004. Mourinho brought in kesman Alex pettichek Thiago Mendez the Dutch Winger iron Robin Paolo Ferreira Ricardo Carvalho and last but not least DDA drop bar Mourinho set up his side with a preferred formation of the 433 where at the time most teams used the 442 he rotated the team quite a bit so there wasn't a set starting 11. in goal we had the brilliant Petra check next up we have Ricardo called value at Center back teaming up with Captain John Terry at left back we are William Gallas with Paula Ferreira covering the right hand side just ahead of them in the defensive Midfield we have the most important piece to the puzzle Claude mcinally filming the center mid-rolls were Frank Lampard in an underrated Chelsea player Thiago operating the flanks we have the Irishman Damian Duff and iron Robin and up front we have the ivorian striker DDA drug bomb now let this season come in the two richest football clubs in the world it is what they call in the movie business a summer blockbuster and Jeremy's away here for Chelsea the Johnson making a run Drogba looking for Ida Johnson he's got there fast and Chelsea scores this is Ida good Johnson for the Blues straight away have instincts as to where Damian duck wasn't he's picked him out perfectly he's round the back Damien done Frank Lampard has probably won this game for Chelsea all the [Applause] Stephen Gerrard the Liverpool Captain sees it flick in that's a long throw and he's gone through [Applause] who was bought as a club record signing party whips it in and Judy flaps at it it's either good Johnson back in [Applause] entire casement of all people Chelsea win their first silverware under Jose Mourinho but the manager is not Pitch side to see it and join in the celebratory party Bridge state is a European match for the 50th time transfer Cash number play on to William and Cole trying to get there turning early towards either good Johnson he's turned maletti [Applause] the perfect start give it to Chelsea by Ida good Johnson terrible shooting counts is deflected and kicked out Costco Chelsea Two Barcelona now [Music] so on towards Damien dark goalkeeper John 3-0 [Applause] years ago on this ground Chelsea scored three times in nine minutes against Barcelona tough with a corner and towards John Terry [Applause] meters goal from John Terry and Chelsea have their noses in front again this team flourished during the season winning game after game only losing one to Manchester City and on the 30th of April 2005. Chelsea traveled up to the macron stadium to try and seal their first league title in 50 years and after 50 years of waiting what is another five days [Applause] [Music] Chelsea the blue is the car Chelsea is the name on the Premiership Trophy and in his debut season as manager Jose Mourinho has got it he's team to title success finishing the league in first place and backing it up with the lead cup of the win over Liverpool Mourinho helped the ramovich achieve his goal and conquered England 15 goals conceded in 38 games phenomenal one of the most formidable sides to ever grace the Premier League and now that England's done all that's left for Roman is to conquer Europe and it was on a Champions League semi-finals night at anfield where Chelsea faced their true test Gerard to his face hunting towards barrosh he's beaten the goalkeeper made contact Luis Garcia wanted to make the line get her something away go all of the semi-final is a Liverpool goal and Phil bouncing the time has come for Liverpool to play in yet another European Cup Final Rafa Benitez and his team have rolled back the years it's just like the old days the next summer Jose of course went on another spanking spree of 77 million pounds bringing in the lights of Michael essien Sean Wright Phillips Asia dohorno and Asana diara Chelsea starting off the season on a great High going 11 games unbeaten and sitting comfortably at the top of the table in the Champions League Chelsea were going steady they finished second in a league below Liverpool to qualify for The Knockout stages their next opponents [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] Champion League [Music] after a tuna win at Bolton Chelsea was one win away from Premier League Triumph they traveled home to Stamford Bridge To Face Off against a familiar foe in what would be a glorious day [Applause] Chelsea take another step towards returning their Premiership type [Applause] Nicole brilliant Chelsea start the party now even with half an hour to go [Applause] Cavalia who's given it and gone absolute wide left I don't remember them playing as well as for Chelsea I think it's been great to do Manchester United are short of numbers here oh there is cavalho in on goal he is playing extremely well he has just made it three nil to the Champions Chelsea uh England's champions again back-to-back Premiership titles in the sweetest way today against their closest Rivals and this time at their beloved Stamford Bridge during the summer Mourinho spent money on some crucial signings the most notables being Andrei shoshenko jono B Mikhail Ashley Cole and Michael Ballack in the start of the New Year Chelsea made their way to The League Cup Final and defeated Arsenal 2-1 to secure their secondly cut on the Roman Abramovich at a glazing header and it's a wonderful goal by Drogba and he puts Chelsea ahead with just over six minutes left whatever time he's added and there's the final whistle and Chelsea have come from behind with two goals and Didier dropper now in the Champions League they made their way all the way to the semi-finals and their opponent Liverpool it was time to get revenge for what happened in o5 Gerard takes it short Daniel agar oh it's in it's a dream start for Liverpool and so it will be penalties to decide who will go first up bolo's ended for Liverpool well Neil the Reds Aryan Robin against Pepe Reyna Australian save shabby Alonso Liverpool at the advantage Frank Lampard score really for Chelsea Anders Stephen sharer the Liverpool Captain superbly done Billy [Music] the Raider saves dirt counts the man for the big occasion sends Liverpool through to another European Cup Final after that intense loss to Liverpool Chelsea will once again knocked out of the semi-finals and now we come to an intent title race after United won against City in a Manchester Derby Mourinho said had to beat Arsenal to stay in a race or they lose the title completely it all came to our heads in the London derby with the match finishing 1-1 and for the first time in four years the Premier League title returned to Old Trafford the team still had something to fight for though the FA Cup they went down to Wembley Stadium to fight a hard-earned battle against United the time the substitutions [Applause] final three minutes is up and Chelsea have won the first FA Cup final at the new Wembley Stadium courtesy of DDA drug bar in the second period of extra time so this is where things get a bit Rocky Chelsea started off the next season less successful than the previous two the team lost to Aston Villa and followed this with a goallish throughout home to Blackburn Rovers the relationship with Mourinho and the club soured over time beyond the point of being salvaged Roman was becoming ever more impatient and after a poor run of games it all came to our heads in a 1-1 draw with Rosenberg in a Champions League the club board held an emergency meeting and decided it was time to part ways with Mourinho and on the 20th of September 2007 Mourinho left the club despite having three years left on his contract he left the Chelsea's most successful manager in history having won six trophies in three years now don't get it twisted Abramovich was grateful for what arena had done for the club he came in and he completely changed the game created a winning mentality that would never go away but
