hello and welcome back i'm evm and it's that time of the year again it's time to save some money and look at which is cheapest in terms of av specific electricity types so if you own an ev you charge it at home then it's probably worth you watching this unless you already do this for yourselves and this is something which a lot of people don't or don't want to they're not interested in how much kilowatt hours it costs for something or doing all the sums or doing that internet search and looking at all the various companies and their various prices it is boring quite frankly but i've done all the work for you so if you're looking at an ev specific tariff and as i said you do have an ev and you charge it at home then there you go the job is pretty much already done for you based on my own usage pattern which i would say is fairly typical for an eevee owner so um let's get the ever busy whiteboard of truth um in use again now as i said earlier this is based on my usage pattern i do quite a few miles in my ev compared to normal but other than that i think this is a pretty strong indicator for anyone with an evu does charge at home in terms of who will be cheapest for them and predominantly it's based on time of day tariffs so the type of tariffs that i've been on for four or five years i think i've been doing this now uh has been one where it's cheaper at night and then the rest of the day is more expensive so i tell my car or the charger when to charge so i'm always charging it pretty much on 95 of it at night when it's cheapest and because the car is using more electricity than the house coupled with the fact that i can actually do some things in the house at that cheat time as well like dishwasher or washing machine you know some high load appliances and then the the majority of my energy comes from that night time periods um however i am going to base it off my um usage pattern that i've been using for again i think this is the 58 now so we can do a good comparison of over the last few years to see what prices were like to what they're like now right my total average monthly usage is 787 kilowatt hours worth of electricity so obviously that's going to be more in winter and less in summer and so that's the average over the year now the hard bit which thankfully i've had smart meters for years now was figuring out how much i used during the off-peak period and the peak period because then i have all the information i need to do the sums for split rate tariffs so on average again i use 400 kilowatts during the um off-peak cheap period which for me has been four hours and 387 of course for the rest of the day so effectively if you imagine you're on a tariff where it's i don't know 15 pence during the day and 5p remember when it was actually this cheap well that's that's long gone but let's use these figures for now you would basically do 387 times 15p 400 times 5p add the standing charge we end up with our monthly average estimate and then multiply that by 12 and we get our yearly yearly estimate so that's it let me now fill this in and get back to you in a minute ta-da and here we are in a great feat of editing green energy uk this is on their tide tariff there is actually three different rates for that one mid high and low and so i've done the calculations according to my usage based on my smart meter data so it is you know pretty accurate three thousand seven hundred and seventy eight pounds for a year's worth of electricity but all these i should point out are fixed well i'm not sure about the green energy effect monitors but all these are 12 months fixed rate so this is for the next year what it should cost you if you're on a variable tariff let me mention this now if you're on a variable tariff that might be what 21 22p at the moment that is going to skyrocket very soon in april when the price gap increases again in october when the price cap is now said to increase another 60 on what it is already going up in april so this is a fixed rate at least for 12 months and then it'll no doubt shoot up again but one year at a time and so yeah for me green energy is is well over the table not a good showing over second bottom with two thousand nine hundred and eight so it's still over a thousand pounds different than the cheapest one again based on my usage if you have an ev you don't do many miles and your house uses a lot of electricity then of course this might change slightly not not to this extent you know it will not flip on its head or anything so you need to do your own sums ultimately to be accurate for you personally everybody is different i can't do a table for the whole country and it'd be you know good enough for them all but it is a very strong indicator i believe for your typical ev owner who charges at home as i said and this is all based on no solar panels no home batteries or anything like that this is just pure maths not off what i actually use now because obviously i do have solar panels in a home battery and that changes things substantially third bottom british gas 2707 pounds not too bad for breeze gas actually they actually do have a time of day tariff but it is still again significantly we're talking hundreds of pounds this is what i find baffling whether you're buying a car or tv or looking at your energy prices yes it's boring spending a couple of hours doing all this sort of see knows cheapest but you could be saving up to a thousand pounds if you're on a standard tariff in fact let me tell you very briefly a story someone who lives near harry he bought an electric vehicle and they got rid of it after nine months because it was well it was costing them the same amount of money as their petrol car according to them and then we said well did you change tariffs no no i didn't what do you mean so the one electric car was on a standard rate tariff and wondered why it cost them a lot of money [Music] i i don't get that you're literally just throwing money out of the window anyway let's get on with this bulb fourth button this is their economy seven tariff two and a half thousand pounds give or take again still uh six hundred not pounds more expensive than the top one so who is third let me just get it up here now these typically haven't done very well over the last four years of doing this video but in third place we have the green company the company that everybody thanks the lord has sold the electric highway to someone else for it's ecotricity i think i'll do that again he could tricked there we go ecotricity 2137 pounds that's not bad now personally i would still want that money in my pocket making my house more efficient you know putting that money towards using less energy in the first place rather than just buying greener energy but that's not about showing from ecotricity they're usually quite expensive or at least have been over the years now second place it is edf and that is called they go electric 35 so i'll call that g e 35 just so you know which one it is i did look at the other i think it was go electric 85 or whatever it's called but this is the cheapest one so on uh go electric 35 2000 and well let's call it 2 100 pounds so yeah a couple of hundred quid more expensive than the top one which of course i'm sure if anybody's been paying attention to my channel over the years they will know who it is it's octopus energy of course on the go tariff now if you are wanting to change talk to the score i have a referral code where you get 50 pounds and i get 50 pounds brilliant so um yeah if you are thinking of changing talk to octopus go and this video has helped you out in any way shape art form then look in the description below you have to click on that link i'll put it in as a pinned comment as well and then sign up with that link if you sign up directly with their website you can still contact them and add this in after the fact uh at least fairly soon after you sign up i believe but just make it easy on yourself you get 50. i get 50 quid use the referral link and before anybody does it don't put your referral code in the comment section it's just going to get deleted do your own video then you might get your own referrals now that is four hours and 20 hours at the expense rate so four hours at the cheap rate 20 hours at the expensive rate this one i believe is five hours so you get an extra hour at the cheap rate on that one so i have done the calculations for the octopus go faster tariff because they do a five-hour version and that came to 1923 pounds uh so it's still in first place octopus is still the cheapest even on what is a half a pence per kilowatt hour deer i believe it is um so yeah it's still number one so four hours is enough for me that's enough to put 120 miles of range into any electric vehicle i don't really do that per day even though i do a lot of miles so for me you don't need to fill it up there's no point saying four hours isn't enough if you arrive home and it's nearly empty and you need a full charge on a big battery version ev then yes all right you're gonna be paying a bit into the expensive rate but it's very rare that happens i get almost 40 i plug it in back up to 80. there's no point in waiting until it gets low you don't treat it like you do a petrol car where you wait until it's nearly empty to fill it up again in the video i did in 2021 just pretty much a year ago we were paying on the exact same tariff i'll be obviously at a cheaper rate 971 pounds it's doubled electricity in a year has doubled so i've been on that for a year and mine expires i think in may and then it's going to go to that based on the same usage pattern you need to put more aside for your energy bills i'm sorry edf uh that was 1079. right uh the other two weren't on last year so we can't see how much they've gone up by and there are a couple of companies missing off this that do ev tariffs but when i looked at them when i contacted them they basically said we're not doing that at the moment so obviously i couldn't get a price for them it's between them two let's face it and uh i suppose you can get 50 quid if you've got an octopus and you're not already with them as can i yes i am a referral what can i say but ultimately again that's what helps pay for things like well these videos you do need for pretty much all of these i believe tariffs a smart meter smart meters are a very good thing not a bad thing this there's a lot of people out there that still go oh i'm never getting your smart meter you know it's like they're spying on me no they're not a bad thing the rollout was done so inefficiently and stupidly yes that's the bad thing about them but that's done gone the sorted that problem out now a smart meter is a very good thing because it gives you access to tariffs like this it means you've got all your energy you never have to do a meter reading and no they can't tell what you're using they're not going to use a smart meter to tax the electricity that's coming from your your electric car charger don't do that so let's just get that conspiracy thing out your head you're gonna need a smart meter that could take a few months just bear that in mind so for example let's let's say you are going to switch to octopus you need to switch to them on one of their standard tariffs then you need to apply for octopus go once you have a smart meter if you have a smith's two smart meter already or a smets one that's secure branded so if it says secure on it that's who makes the smart meter then you can go and talk to the score as soon as you transfer over to octopus we have to pick a normal tariff to then get the octopus go tariff if that makes sense uh i believe there are a few other smets one meters as well because i have a specs one meter and that they also support without having to swap it out for a new one because that can as i said take a few months to get a smart mirror so do bear that in mind when you're doing your calculations there we go right thanks for listening i think i've explained and answered every question that's why i go on a bit on these that's why your waffle on i try and predict any question that's going to be asked in the comment section so you don't have to ask it in the comment section okay i'm done promise actually i'm not promise this is the last one anyone who's a member of this channel got this video a week early and if there's something like this that i spot that's not worthy of video i will put up for members on like a community post the owning members see it costs 99p a month you can pay a bit more if you think it's worth more and all you have to do is click on the join button which is next to the subscribe button
