hey i'm adam jusko from proudmoney.com and in this video we are going to pit the new and improved capital one saver one card versus the chase freedom flex credit card but before we do that i'm gonna ask you to please subscribe to this youtube channel if you have not already and if you have already i thank you for doing so so earlier this week capital one uh they didn't really announce the improvements so much they just kind of added some improvements to their capital one saver cards the saver rewards and the saver one card for purposes of this video the saver one card is what we are going to focus on with the changes to the card with the enhancements to the saver one card i said that i thought it was now right up there among the very best of the no annual fee cards on the market and so i thought it would be interesting to actually do a little versus here and hit it up against one of the other best no annual fee cards on the market so it is the chase freedom flex versus the capital one saver one card so both of these cards no annual fee both of these cards three percent cash back on your dining purchases both of these cards as i make this video at least offering a 200 bonus opportunity both of these cards as i make this video offering a zero percent interest rate on your new purchases for the first 15 months that you have the card so a lot of similarities right there but obviously there are some differences too so we're going to look at each card and see what it offers overall and then we'll kind of look at what those differences are and pit them against each other and decide which one of these cards wins so let's start with the chase freedom flex card no annual fee three percent cash back on those dining purchases as we have said five percent back on purchases according to a calendar that chase provides every three months the five percent categories change so as i make this video it's five percent at gas stations and home improvement stores last quarter it was five percent at warehouse clubs internet cable phone services and streaming services those were all bunched together as places where you could get five percent cash back on up to fifteen hundred dollars in purchases in those five percent categories so every calendar quarter that changes where you can get five percent in addition you can get three percent back at drugstores five percent back when you make purchases of travel through chase's ultimate rewards travel portal one percent back on everything else as i make this video two hundred dollar bonus opportunity for new card holders there is the zero percent offer that i mentioned zero percent for 15 months on new purchases with this card capital one saver one card no annual fee three percent cash back on those dining purchases as we've said three percent back on grocery store purchases now that does exclude your big box stores like walmart target etc three percent back on most streaming services three percent back on entertainment purchases which includes a whole host of different things from movie theaters to amusement parks to bowling alleys to tourist attractions when you are traveling so a whole lot of stuff can fall under that entertainment category one percent back everywhere else same 200 bonus opportunity as the chase freedom flex has also the same zero percent offer on new purchases at least as i make this video zero percent for 15 months on new purchases when you first get the card so when you strip out everything that is essentially the same about these cards here's what you are sort of left with on the chase freedom flex side five percent rotating categories three percent of drug stores five percent on travel through the chase ultimate rewards portal versus the capital one saver ones three percent on groceries three percent on streaming services three percent on entertainment purchases now when you look at it that way which one of those wins to me it is sort of a toss-up if you were looking for one card to hold that was going to cover sort of the widest amount of you know your everyday purchases well in the capital one saver one card probably comes out ahead because it has the dining and the groceries and the entertainment and the streaming a lot of different things where you're getting an enhanced reward i could see that as being your sort of daily driver the card that you are pulling out all the time where with the chase freedom flex i think it is a little bit more of a complimentary card maybe if you had other credit cards in your wallet if you wanted to get it that five percent uh rotating categories or if you use the chase ultimate rewards travel portal and i don't know if most people would other than to actually redeem rewards versus actually making purchases in most cases but anyway if that was attractive to you this is a card that you would choose for those things so it's sort of a toss-up however in truth there are a few other factors to consider when we pit the saver one versus the chase freedom flex first of all foreign transaction fees the chase freedom flex has them the capital one saver one card does not capital one no extra charges levied on your purchases with the card outside of the united states if you use the chase freedom flex card outside of the united states you're going to have an extra three percent fee added to every purchase that you make ease of approval is the next place i want to look at capital one generally thought of as being easier to be approved for their cards than chase however in this case i think it's not all that far off in terms of what your chances of approval are with these two cards the capital one saver one card kepler one does say that it is for excellent credit now their idea of excellent credit is sort of goes down into what i would think of as pretty good credit where chase oftentimes is thought of as being a little more difficult than capital one but chase says that they are approving some people for the uh chase freedom flex card with credit lines as low as 500 so that means some people whose credit is really not all that great or their credit score is not all that high or maybe they don't have a ton of credit history under their belt are getting approved for this card so i don't know if there's a whole lot of difference the saver one probably a little easier than the chase freedom flex but not by much the chase 524 rule might come into play in your decision making that is the unofficial but pretty much acknowledged rule that chase is not going to approve you for a credit card if you have already gotten five or more credit cards in the past 24 months and that's five or more credit cards with any issuer not just with chase so some people prioritize chase over the other card issuers to make sure that they can get approved and that they don't have too many credit cards that would stop them from being approved by chase now you might say to yourself well who cares if i you know i'm over with chase i don't care that much about getting a chase card versus anyone else well the reason that some people prioritize chase with that 524 rule is the next point in our comparison here and that is points pooling which is hard to say without spitting with all those p's so you can pool your points with the chase ultimate rewards program across all of their credit cards pretty much and when you do this obviously that means that you can have more points that perhaps you are going to redeem but then you also have the potential with chase's sapphire cards to take your points from other cards pull them with the points on those cards and then use them to redeem through chase's ultimate rewards portal and get even more value out of them so if you have the chase sapphire preferred you can get a 25 boost on your points when you use them through chase's ultimate rewards portal and that means you can take the ones from the the points from the chase sapphire preferred and your points from the chase freedom flex and any other cards put them all together and get that 25 percent extra if you have the chase sapphire reserve you can get 50 percent extra now the chase sapphire preferred has a 95 annual fee the chase sapphire reserve has a 550 annual fee as i make this video so whether it makes sense for you to get those cards as well is a whole different question but that is the reason that some people prioritize chase because they want the whole package they want those travel cards they want the ability to get that boost on their points through the portal and to pull their points from all chase's cards and chase has some pretty good cards overall now i just talked all about chase so i should talk about capital one using those same metrics no 524 rule with capital one now capital one probably has some loose rules sliding scale in terms of how many credit cards you are allowed to get over the you know last year or two years before they would say no we're not going to give a card to this person but they don't have sort of a hard line in the sand at least as far as anyone knows when they are not going to give you any more credit cards so the 524 rule is not something really to think about with capital one in terms of points pooling in the past with capital one this wasn't something that would even come up you would not even think about uh you know the capital one saver one card in concert with the capital one venture card because there really wasn't a whole lot of extra value you're going to get by having multiple capital one cards things are sort of changing with capital one it does appear that you can pool your points or your cash back depending on how you look at it with your capital one saver one card with one of the capital one venture or venture one cards it's still a little bit less value as far as i'm concerned in terms of what those cards offer and what you would get by pooling your uh points together there's no travel portal where you're going to get an extra 25 or 50 on your points capital one does have some travel partners that they've also beefed up and that has made their points on the venture cards worth a little bit more in a lot of people's eyes and so if you can pull you know points from the saver one card with one of those cards and you really value the uh airline partners that they have well then you can see more value with capital one than you used to i think chase still wins here in terms of the points pooling but capital one definitely getting better time to name a winner now it's not really fair to name a winner because i could make a case for either one of these cards being the better card depending on your circumstances if you were someone that was looking for one card that was going to do a whole lot in terms of enhanced rewards on sort of everyday categories i'd probably choose the saver one if i was looking for a card to sort of complement other cards that i have in those five percent rotating categories in particular on the chase freedom flex were attractive to me well then maybe that is the way i would go now the capital one saver one has no foreign transaction fees if i was someone that traveled outside of the u.s on any regular basis that would be something more attractive to me because the chase room flex is going to charge me three percent extra when i'm outside of the us the points pooling is a big deal for a lot of people if you are someone that holds one of the chase sapphire cards there are many people that like to have multiple chase cards in order to get that pooling and put those points through that chase ultimate rewards portal and get that 25 or 50 percent boost so it all depends on what works for you but the whole point of this video was that we are going to name a winner and looking at all of those things together i give it to the chase freedom flex by just a hair and in the past capital one in many ways not even really competitive i think with a lot of chase cards so the fact that it is even sort of a toss-up and that i have to look at all of these factors and just barely give it to chase freedom flex is actually a huge compliment to capital one in terms of the changes they have made to their saver one card so i think cap or i don't even know which one anymore chase freedom flex still a little bit ahead of the saver one not so much because of the card on its own terms but more about the fact that the chase family of cards and the pooling of points makes it still stay a little bit ahead of capital one but capital one is working on things in that area too it looks like they may have some more cards or at least one sort of higher end card coming out they are redoing a travel portal which makes you wonder if they eventually are going to be doing sort of a points boost when you go through their portal so we will see what happens for now as i make this video chase freedom flex the winner so that's it questions comments disputes put them in that comment section below otherwise i thank you for watching and as always please go to proudmoney.com where we do credit card reviews we talk personal finance so we talk deals and all sorts of other fun stuff too thank you for watching bye
