what was the name of the place uh I'm Romanian I don't remember sh sha yeah sh how you pronounce it you English guys well I I have to say in a Romanian way otherwise I get shut down in flames so Shira Shira okay the original tourist Village Under chesu the first Charlie is in shida he lives here and I wonder why well it's a no-brainer for me uh when brexit happened I was commuting back from England and spending probably 9ine months a year in Romania and my partner wner and I decided that uh since uh most people in the UK voted to uh divorce themselves from Europe that we wanted to be a part of Europe still I voted to remain and uh we chose to live so you voted to r i voted to Romain of course ABS is Romanian term yes ramun run absolutely okay okay ramun run [Music] exactly yeah no I I I it's just the lifestyle for me here is so much better you know it was uh very tough living in England um with uh you know Rising inflation rates uh now mortgage rates are 10% it's expensive it's difficult the traffic is terrible and uh being up here in the mountains we have much better wi-fi and much better uh internet than I had in my Village in Hampshire okay and I can work I'm a digital Nomad we can work anywhere but since we're doing most of our work promoting Romania it made sense to actually be here and we wake up to the sound of cowbells in the morning and we look out at this gorgeous view and we're on the edge of P cryo National Park and occasionally you can hear a wolf howling at night or the of the wild bo uh and it's proper wild and you just don't get that in the UK you don't have this connection with nature we've lost that why would you want to stay wild why would you want to live wild because it's something from a civilized country well it's it's highly civilized here but we've hung on to Our Roots and traditions in Romania in a way that hasn't happened in Western Europe people here are very proud of their Traditions when when I'm asked uh you know we're doing a campaign at the moment for BBC world to to promote Romania with the ministry of Tourism and and I had to identify what are the unique selling points for Romania and I think one of them is is the pride that people have in their Heritage in their past and in their Traditions uh and and you see these crafts and traditions and costumes and everything here in all the different parts of this country and we've got a great cultural mix here you know it's it's a it's a cultural chorba of different ethnic groups all living under the same flag and and I find that fascinating I think for a tourist that's fascinating and and and you know we we we've lost a lot of that in in places like the UK now you said we have as if you're Romanian yeah I I I know that I'm constantly taking to task about that you know forget it you're English what are you talking about well I'm now a resident uh 5-year resident I intend to renew that I want to live here for the rest of my life I'm hoping well maybe yeah we we have some other ideas as well but for now in sha and and also um hoping to become a citizen I'm not brilliant on wait wait wait wait wait wait wait yeah you want to become a citizen of Romania I want to become a Romanian citizen do you know the exam how hard it is yes I do you need to know all the the rulers of Romania since Lan watch flavors of Romania season 2 you'll see I know a little bit about Romania's history now but it's it's not just that uh I know probably uh all the nine historic regions of Romania maybe better than quite a lot of Romanians let's put it like that cuz I've been making films here for n on 10 years um I was privileged enough to receive a nigh Hood U from the president uh the cross of the royal household from uh Majesty Margaretta and and so I feel like this country's adopted me and and also my language skills aren't that great but I I think that there's a there's an idea that I might be being put forward for cultural Services which would make it a bit easier when it comes to my linguistic skills uh you know I speak very good English and I'm a poet so you know I've been a poet for the BBC so when it comes to English no problem but I'm still struggling to master the Romanian language but I'm guessing there slowly but you know in order to become a Romanian you need to be the owner of at least one sheep yeah well that's okay we've we've sheep we've got six sheep uh which we share with daru who's my adopted father and his wife radika he's always every time the camera goes on and we have a new scre like copy your mail copy your mail and you know it's vice versa we sold the house to them a few years ago and they asked if they could stay on and keep the animals in the barn that was four years three and a half years another test roshi roshi uh what do you eat roshi with oh uh okay um uh cool well anything for example okay rosi being Tomatoes right yeah yeah that's what I mean Tomatoes I eat with everything okay what is a tradition Romanian dish okay chaper tomato and onions I mean that that works doesn't it that works KU oh KU evid evident evident yeah exactly all right but I with a lot of things so I needed a little bit more detail tell me some of us don't like the country some of us some of us like five well 5 million of us have left the country yes not all of them don't like it but most of them you know realize that they can be better off in another one in another country what is your message for people who have maybe have left 10 or 20 years ago they're thinking about returning returning um I think it's harder for people who really put down routes in other countries to up sticks and come back but I would still say do it I I'm I've lost both my parents uh my brother lives in Australia my family have largely gone I don't have family abroad now so you can pick where you live um but for people who've got family here in Romania they've got grandparents they got uncles they got aunts they got cousins my my view is that that blood is thicker than water and if you spend so much time abroad you're missing the last few years of your grandparents or maybe even your parents' lives and and these are people that gave birth to you brought you into the world people you can learn from and you can continue to share beautiful experiences with and it's okay to come back just for Christmas or you know for for Easter or whatever but you're missing out on the very important chapters of their lives and and and I think that's terribly sad I I know there's this dream that you can make more money abroad but my view is that you can't these days because I've seen Romanians in London for example and they've got for example the uh the underground charges they've got the rental charges on their house they've got the car insurance they've got all of these things and in the end they don't save very much money to send home and I think it's getting harder and harder with interest rates and everything else in places like the UK France Germany and Spain and and meanwhile Romania is a country that's on the up uh and it has fantastic possibilities and opportunities not least in terms of Tourism and I've met many Romanians when we've been making uh flavors season 2 who've come back and done very very well and they've got a much better quality of life and their kids are living in a beautiful place uh and they're getting a fabulous bilingual education and and they're also learning about their Roots surely there must be something here around you that can be improved there's so many things that we we can always improve on of course we can uh you know we need to improve on the education system here in the moment 70% of of kids who are School levers in this country School levers are functionally illiterate and that's the statistic I didn't make that up and that's terribly sad it means that they can't read or write properly when they leave school and try to find a job that is a shocking statistic and it's something that has to change uh and and we can only really change it if if there's investment in education and also if we reopen local schools in my opinion because it's not just the schools in the city it's the schools in rural communities where kids have to travel far too long to get to the school and it's a big school they don't get the individual attention that they need and and I I think we really need to focus on the Next Generation here uh and educate them and they're the ones that are going to be raising you know the bar here in Romania but we also have to find reasons to make them stay and that's vitally important we have to provide incentives and we have to have um uh apprenticeships and this kind of thing to teach people but look hey I mean I'm here I wake up in the morning I see this view I'm living in Paradise we have high-speed Wi-Fi Villages like this can be resuscitated new life can be breathed into them by bringing businesses out to the country when they can work with internet and they can leave Bucharest or the big big cities timara Yash and actually we can relocate businesses to Villages like this and create jobs and and employees bring their kids and then Revitalize schools this can happen and I I believe that this is the way forward but it it it needs help it needs investment now what is your daily routine you told me about waking up in the morning it's what do you actually do here in the middle of nowhere well it's kind of like it's a bit I'm buer that I don't think anything happens around here all right well let me tell you cuz cuz I I think it's a bit like your routine I mean you know you told me earlier that you interview like three people a day so when we're working and we're on the road it's like this well we're going to stay here we got to do this then we jump I jump back on the bike they jump in the crew car off we go we do something else uh so we have this flurry of activity for seven or eight months making the latest show or whatever we're doing we spent the best part of a year filming a life in a year in the life of the danub Delta when we did wild danub and then we come back for 3 months or four months here um usually in the winter time when you can't film anymore and the snow is nearly waste steep at times and we struggle down from the top of the hill with the shopping um but we have our edits site and we work and we put our films together so this is a place we escape back to but it's also a place that we work and we Cate all the stuff that we've done so it's home but it's also an office and and and you know that that's what's so lovely to be able to live and to work in such a beautiful environment but still you're not from these parts how how does a a place becomes home for somebody who's not actually home there well I I I think for me home is where the heart is and uh you know and I'd say this to Romanians living abroad you know you can you can mix mix there I don't have much of a home in the UK so it's easy for me to make that transition but for Romanians who've moved to another country their home and their heart is still here and they miss it and I know they miss it and they write to me and lots of people have said I've moved back as we saw your films because they they evoked that feeling of nostalgia of oh my god look I look what I I I had and now we're living in a a builtup town in Luton or somewhere like this and it's it's disastrous and you know it's really hard and we don't save much money at the end of the day yes you're going to earn less money back here possibly or obviously in many cases but if you set up your own business there are opportunities here that you can take advantage of and and actually you don't need as much money to live in Romania and you have a better quality of life the food the natural ingredients here you know this is the Bread Basket of Europe we have organic fruit organic veg I never understand why people you know uh import rushi from Spain or or melons from you know melons from Turkey when when on the Sun of the road you have people selling their own produce and you can buy these beautiful things right from right from people's houses and we need to encourage farmers markets I'm a I'm a supporter an ambassador of of slow food in buz and they do this and I I'd love to see Farmers Market springing up across the country where local producers have an opportunity to sell the things that they've grown and made and cut with their own hands smoked or stored or pickled and all that kind of thing so you know this this for me is tremendously exciting and uh I just pinch myself every day I wake up here and we we both look at it and we just feel blessed JY thank you very much good luck with your Romanian citizenship thank you so much you know you can run for office afterwards I still need to I need to speak a lot better Romanian or I'd have to be uh um you know behind wner and she'd have to be you know the the one in the front get a spokesperson be the shadow guy thank you so much that's in my dep [Music] part
