hi guys welcome to trollable and today i'm going to help you plan the things to do in charleville now charleville is located in outback queensland about eight and a half hours west of the queensland capital of brisbane it's known for a few reasons like the cosmos centre and being able to view the amazing night skies and the cute little bilbies which are native to australia both of these i'll show you today plus some other things that you should consider when visiting i post a lot of outdoor content and you can check out more by subscribing and hitting that notification bell any questions please put them in the comments below [Music] before starting any exploration don't forget to pop into the tourist information center and pick up any pamphlets and talk to the staff about what you want to do things like the cosmos centre and the bilby show is pretty popular and you will need to book this before you arrive first up we have the quick viewing of the water tower which was painted in may 2019 by guido van helton a 30 meter high water tower depicting four children intertwined through sport which is a rival game played with nearby kanama [Music] about 30 kilometers south of charlevoix you'll come to angelica creek and the remnant site of the largest truck explosion in australia which happened in september 2014. this destroyed the angelica bridge that was built in 1897 [Music] the truck was carrying 53 tonnes of ammonia nitrate which crashed and caught fire the blast was so large it felt like an earthquake 30 kilometers away and in the town of charleville the radius of the explosion was more than a kilometer and it looked like a war zone eight people were injured but luckily no one was killed you can view the site at any time during the day [Music] if you're looking at getting out in the fresh air and going for a walk and explore the local area then you might want to consider the river walk it's only a short walk and really nice way to end the evening [Music] there are a couple of tours you can do to learn about charlevoix involvement in world war ii the easiest is visiting the secret base building which is open daily from nine to five and cost eight dollars per person it will tell you about the 3 500 u.s army and air force personnel that were stationed there and you can walk through a self-guided display there is another secret tour that you can basically follow the guide in your own vehicle and goes to leftover bunker sites and more to learn about the classified base [Music] have you ever seen a weather balloon launched into the air well we're just about to see one in about 10 minutes if you want to drive out near the charleville airport there is a weather balloon released into the air at exactly 9 15 every morning it's an automatic release and will not wait around for you so make sure you get there in plenty of time it collects data such as temperature wind direction speed and helps with forecasting [Music] being part of the natural sciences loop we now come to one of the highlights of charleville in visiting the cosmos centre there are two main tours to see here one during the day or called the sun tour or the night time tour which is the big sky observatory they are both popular and will need to be booked before you get there other than the tours you can explore the center on its own watch movies learn about astronauts and even stop in for a coffee or snacks [Music] the sun tour is where we got to look through their hydrogen alpha sun telescope to observe the sun up close even close enough to see the solar flares the big sky observatory you get to look through the 14-inch mead telescopes and items in the sky available at that time of year or that time of month as it was a full moon for us we got to see the moon a few stars and even saturn well this time we are off to meet the little bilby so let's go learn about that lastly we have the bilby center which is held right beside the tourist information center and costs 20 per adult this will also need to be booked in advanced you will have a guide tell you about the bilbies and the programs in place to help save their survival [Music] after all of that you'll be taken into a dark room to see them note the red lighting as they are nocturnal animals and it's the only way you will see them active during the daytime are you adding challenge to your list of places to visit in outback queensland thanks for watching this far and hit that like button if you've enjoyed it and if you're exploring more of queensland or trekking through the outback i have more videos that you need to check out so click the playlist here to see some more [Music]
