Character Development in Writing | Creative Writing Lessons

are you struggling with character development do you need a tune-up for your character development don't worry i have your answers right here in this video in this video i'm going to cover some questions that you need to answer in the point of view of your character so if you want to follow along start off with drawing a character or stick figure in the middle of your paper and the first question you're going to be looking at is what does the character value the second one is what does your character want the third one is people who have made a difference in their life okay let's get to the fourth one what does your character hate the next one is what does your character love after that it's what does your character fear what decisions that made a difference in the character's life and last but not least is what does your character believe so let's use iron man the first movie as an example so the first question we start off with is what does your character value so we learned in the beginning of iron man that tony stark just wants to have fun he doesn't really have any situations or any values yet in the middle of the movie we learned that he wants life life is a value after he almost dies right and then he we learn that he loves justice he wants justice since he saw that the terrorists took over his weapons and at the end of it he keeps the same values from the second one where he wants to kind of write his wrongs by stopping obadiah stain the next question you have to answer is what i want and we learned that iron man or tony stark in the beginning wants us to sell his jericho missiles to make money and then in the middle we see that he wants to live once he gets captured and he's in the cave and then at the very end of the movie we see that he just wants to right his wrongs by stopping obadiah stain from using the iron monger suit from his technology he made from the cave the next question is people who made a difference in their life with tony stark it started out with obadiah stain kind of taking him under his wing once his parents were killed then you get to the middle of the movie where yohisin who is in the cave that saves his life kind of sets him on a new path of righteousness and then at the very end another last two people who really made the bigger difference in his life is pepper potts and agent coulson which changing them into a hero once you answer that question the next one is what does your character hate and with iron man at their beginning the first thing he really hates is responsibility by not even showing up to the awards ceremony but he also doesn't like authority in the middle of the movie we see that he doesn't like the terrorists because they captured and almost killed him and at the end he starts to see the injustice and that kind of leads us towards the future movies later down the line the next one is what does your character love and in the very beginning of tony stark we see he just really loves himself he loves women and he loves his money well after he gets captured in the middle he starts to see that life is more important than everything else he has so then that's what he loves he loves life and then at the very end we see that his whole world changes and he starts to believe that innocence is one of the most important things in the world and also becoming a hero the next question is what does your character fear and in the very beginning we can already tell that tony stark fears emotional connections and we think that is because of his father because of his parents which you find out later on but it just establishes who he is by starting off at the very beginning of the movie with him gambling and flirting with all the women in the middle of it his other fear is becoming dying and then watching his legacy become killing innocents instead of stopping wars and fighting terrorists and at the end of it his fear is still of innocence getting hurt and also we get a hint of him having the fear of losing pepper pots the next question decisions that made a difference in my life so in the beginning tony stark going to the middle east made a huge difference because that's where he gets captured and almost killed in the middle of the movie making the iron man suit is a huge huge life-changing decision because now he takes on a responsibility where he has to protect the innocents and protect what's going on in the middle east and again at the very end he's the biggest decision in his life is he's ready to sacrifice his life to save everybody else from the obadiah stain the next question is what i believe so what does the character believe iron man in the beginning believes that his weapon is doing harms against the terrorists against criminals but then as we see in the middle of it he finds out that his weapons are used against innocents because the criminals those terrorists have control over his jericho missiles and then at the end we see that he makes a big decision and what his new belief is that he needs to become the weapon to protect the world as he is now iron man for your homework build your character if you don't have the plot ready it's okay just start answering those questions from your character's past because the past is the most important part of your character to establish who they are in the beginning to who they are at the end revealing their character arc tony stark also had a past before they even became this movie right his parents died he inherited his family business all this money didn't have to really have any responsibilities inventing stuff when he was a teenager so you can go based off of that use your character's path to establish who they are for the beginning of the story and all of that is the
