hello and welcome to teachings and education chaos theory a look at a classroom every classroom teacher should expect the unexpected even the smallest of decisions can have an explosive impact now let's take a quick look at the many applications of chaos theory first understand that chaotic behavior can be found in many walks of life KS applications are found in physics many forms of mathematics biology and ecology and weather patterns and even computer science still teachers can apply the principles of chaotic behavior to their classroom practices it must be noted that chaotic principles have not been researched for educational purposes nevertheless it does apply to group dynamics which will be a part of any classroom so let me give a quick overview of chaos theory chaos theory in action one instance includes a mathematician that noticed an interesting phenomena based on his calculations the mathematician decided to round his numbers on performing the calculation and because of something as small as rounding just a few digits he achieved two entirely different results the butterfly effect has become synonymous with chaos theory the idea behind the butterfly effect is that something that seems as trivial as a butterfly flapping its wings can have a tremendous effect on something as large as national weather systems possibly causing a storm one of the principles of chaos theory is that feedback leads to more chaos the best examples would be the many fluctuations in the stock market stocks will rise and fall based on what is being said and perceived about that stock through feedback unpredictability now let's say you have two different helium balloons on one blue and one red and you release those balloons into the atmosphere you have absolutely no idea of knowing or predicting anywhere these balloons are going to wind up chaos theory will relate to education specifically in terms of group dynamics now let's take a general classroom where students are listening and instruction is taking place all it takes is the addition of one single student to completely change the dynamics of the entire group the collective students within the group begin to take on the same behavior as the student that was added on the other hand things would be completely different if a teacher were able to change that student's behavior they can do that by maybe identifying a small triggering factor and that positive change can have a ripple effect on all other students now let's move on to instruction for chaos how do you prepare for an unstable system such as a classroom the first thing you could do is get to know your students know their history their background and how to specifically manage them remember to remain calm your reactions may result in an increase in chaos remaining calm is important for a teacher because all students respond to your behavior next plan to the last detail there are things you can't control but there are things that you do control such as lesson plans having copies for everyone next up analyze the disturbances in the classroom try and identify the conditions that lead to chaotic and disruptive behavior in the classroom so what are some initial conditions and how do we manage them one of the first things you can do is clean your classroom Mesa's lead to stress and teachers often overlook this consider the seating arrangements and what students are sitting down and where don't place boyfriends and girlfriends next to each other the lighting of the room will affect the students having dark lights or bright lights on create different signaling effects something else to consider is the time on tasks that a student spends is - tasks too much time Orla lead to boredom also the rigor and the assessments can lead to different behaviors is the work too challenging or is it too easy what about a teacher's tone some students will respond better to a softer lighter tone all teachers know that planning and producing engaging lessons lead to productive student work teachers to know a bit about their students are they dealing with personal issues at home and lastly a day with all writing assignments is different than a day with presentations right now I want to say thank you for your time subscribe to this channel and like and share this video see you again soon [Music]
