it has been way too long way way too long since we had some carnage on the channel we've had lots of interesting failures some spun bearings we saw an engine jump time and ecotech and i had to pour the rocker arms out of the cylinder head we've seen blown head gaskets and a bad cvt there's some cool stuff in the last month or so but nothing with piston mcnuggets no mouse in the combustion palace and i wanted to change that my goal for this week was to find an engine that was blown up i didn't care what it was it could have been any engine i just i literally drove around to all the yards not all but some of the hours i deal with until i found an engine that was properly spent and that's what we have here it's a 2 liter out of a 2005 to 7 ford focus and these are actually pretty good engines they're only like three or four hundred dollars for a good running engine and i will tell you this there is no value in anything here this is literally all getting up into scrapping unless somebody wants something out of it they're nothing sells off of these so this is just for the video this 2-liter duratec makes about 135 horsepower and it was found in the 2005-7 ford focus i know there's some other engine options in those as well and they're actually pretty good engines especially when you compare them to the 2-liter split port the z-tech which was also an engine that's replaced those are pretty good too but the really astonishing thing about this engine is this is the first variant in north america of what eventually bred the ecoboost engines the 2-liter and the 2-3 they are all loosely based on this architecture and that's dating back to 2004 2005. it's pretty cool this has to be one of the dirtiest and most disgusting grimy greasy cores i've had in in a really really long time it's so dirty that i'm pretty sure that's the reason it's bad the previous owner was probably confused as to where to put the engine oil so you're supposed to pull the oil cap off put the oil in the crankcase here not pour it on the outside this takes inside oil not outside oil now when i said this engine was bad i meant it someone installed inspection ports on the back of the block and since the back is kind of hard to see when the engine's in the vehicle they also installed one on the front as always let's start with the spark plugs i mean the coils and then the plugs oh so we're just gonna it's gonna be like that that one came out it wasn't leaking i'm sure it ran great so good i mean there are better ways to increase the oil capacity of your engines [Applause] okay so the valve cover's broken which means this is a task for old blue see it uh let me pour that oil back in there i don't want to lose any of that the threaded insert this must be cross threaded or something's wrong well they're not overly tight or loose i okay maybe i shouldn't have said anything that one's kind of tight that one's full [Music] so much oil does this thing even have a valve cover gasket well they're all the right plug cylinder one looks okay cylinder two okay but cylinder three has been re-gapped by the piston now typically pistons don't get to determine the gap of a plug unless it wants to change something knowing what we know i think the best thing we can do now is try to turn the engine over because well i want to know is it locked up yeah maybe it goes backwards no no next is peel this intake manifold off no there's got to be more oh no there's one how am i supposed to get to this i've got a socket for this job but first the dipstick so they really want you to take the throttle body off to get this bolt out but we're not going to do that got this swivel quarter drive 10. it's like my right hand man i use it for everything don't take that the wrong way [Music] i think that's it let's just uh i don't know yank on it oh i must have missed a bolt where's the other one oh i see it i mean i don't really see it but i see where it could be because everything's just a mess of crap i need a flashlight for this yep turns out there's another bolt here now it's loose oh there's some vacuum lines and stuff harness connectors and stuff got to be gentle you know okay i think i think there's a crankcase vent hose behind this we're gonna find it out real quick yes there is i'm gonna cut this hose because i can precision tooling here i think i got it all that is dirty cylinder one intake port looks pretty good cylinder two about the same now this is cylinder 3 that had the adjusted spark plug and the valves are open it doesn't exactly look great but nothing terrible cylinder 4 looks alright as well on the exhaust side clearly sat outside just got some water on the top of the valve at least rust stains cylinder two cylinder three doesn't look so great it's really wet in there don't and then there's cylinder four now it's time to peel the valve cover off and to take the valve cover off i have to remove this engine hanger because yes [Music] that's a 10. and then there's whatever this is oh knock sensor maybe yeah that's what that is just kind of making some room i can go that way so the bolts weren't very tight which this cover just lifts right off oh yeah well it does not appear to be rubber anymore see if we can fish this out and see how brittle it is so it's really not that makes no sense to me why was it leaking so bad unless they only change the outside and this one is hard as a rock nope so i usually they're hard as a rock and brittle and i mean these are pretty pliable and soft they're not perfect but i think this just wasn't tightened down first look under the hood and it just looks varnished like it wasn't well taken care of but i don't see any there's no sparkles really up here that i can easily see you see something that's not so great and that is orange silicone between the timing cover and the block now that means someone's been in here they're not it's not supposed to be orange and it's likely not the good orange and considering i just pulled a huge hunk of it out from between the two usually gray if you're gonna do this use gray or whatever the factory calls for not cheap orange orange doesn't have very many places before we start to pull the cylinder head we need to get the timing cover out of the way so we're going to get this strip down get this cover off i know there's a 13 hiding around here somewhere now it's time for that crank pulley now these are not keyed at all that wasn't very tight either now we just have a ton of eight millimeter bolts i think i know why it was leaking i think there were two or three tight bolts in all of those bolts now the big bolts on the timing cup those are also too loose let's see how hard it is to pull this cover off i think i got all the bolts out okay i actually need blue oh my god too much guys too much it's two when it sticks this far into the crankcase that's too much it's too much of the wrong stuff i always get you i wonder what that stump's going to look like so this is a little confusing because typically the only reason you'd have the timing cover off is to i don't know replace the timing components and all of this looks like it hasn't been touched the same amount of varnish on this guide here everything looks the way you would expect for an engine in this condition the good news is everything is in okay condition i don't see anything majorly wrong in the timing system it's all very simple now to undo the timing system i'm going to make the right call and protect myself with the only way i know how and just okay nope hey i have no idea what happened there but it came out ah i didn't know if it was gonna shoot this heavy or not better safe than sorry so then this just comes right off yeah that looks really nice [Music] that rail looks good too but this chain what a chain all right we can leave all of this stuff alone till later let's get back to the cylinder head let's crack these cam caps loose oh chunkies ah cam is stuck you know what we do in this situation let me just give it a little tap just a little one now that the cams are out you can definitely see a little bit of metal in here surprisingly the journals don't look that bad it's really surprising the journals held up really well considering when i pulled the cam there was all kinds of metal on the journals on the cam but in the head and that one's got a little wear that was pretty ugly cam camps they look like cam caps definitely have a bunch of metal on them and on there and the journals on the cam they have like look at the amount of metal on that it's amazing that kind of metal that size i mean look at that made it through the oil filter maybe it didn't have to there is metal all over these cams same thing on the other side wow lots of metal in the wrong spot if we go any further and create another mess i'm going to remove the drain bolt and drain all the juices out of this engine because i have no idea of what might be in this pan it could be completely dry oh it's uh shiny what is this what kind of metal fluid is this but i'm glad i drained it so that would have been on the floor now i'm going to rotate the engine a little so that i have a little more leverage without chasing this engine around on the floor oh this too sounds like a cash register but now it's time to crack the head bolts loose and i'm not really a fan of the type of fastener these use it's a t55 i got to be different you know what we're going to remove that hook because that's going to be a problem [Music] oh time to pull the head this should just come right off oh yeah well i really can't see anything because the cylinders except for one filled with oil head gasket looks okay uh it's a lot of a lot of oil a lot and what's weird is there's nothing in here i mean i can feel some stuff oh hey look my hand's sticking out of the block there's stuff in there it'll be fun how much you want to bet that wrist pin is perfect so i'm going to kind of soak up some of this oil so we can kind of see what's going on here there's a lot of oil a lot oh my this one's like a quart of oil on this one so cylinder one looks good cylinder two there's a little bit of rust cylinder three deleted and cylinder four lots of carbon dingy very dirty engine the boar is just in fantastic now it's it's trash some pretty deep marks i'm sure the wrist pin had a lot of fun here they're cylinder one cylinder two and that's where the explosion happened lots of deep marks in both the valves and the combustion chamber this head is destined for the bin now normally this is the point in the video where i'd flip this engine upside down and remove the oil pan but there's a lot of stuff in the pan it's a full load is what i'm trying to say so we're going to pull the oil pan with the engine upright that way i can collect all of the engine excrement in one spot it's all in the pan it's much like a diaper and no i've never used ben gay to change my son's diaper i meant to say a d ointment but my brain is well it's my brain now we're just going to give this some help here [Music] oh this is this is a heavy one well uh yeah let's go check this out this is like the engine sampler here you don't really know what you want so you get a little bit of everything there's an oil ring a compression ring the bottom of a connecting rod is perfect shape that's part of the block there's the reusable wrist pin perfectly unscathed i swear this is the strongest part of all engines look at that piston mcnuggets look at that little bite-sized pieces too it's pretty cool sure this just blew up at idle oh look one of the rod cap bolts there's the bottom of the connecting rod the middle of the connecting rod that's where the wrist pin goes that looks like a bushing for the wrist pin yeah i think that's what that is that's uh yep i don't know what that is part of the piston and then this big piece that's part of the engine girdle oh man look what it did to the windage tray that baffle it's not windows tray it's a baffle but look what it did to that another ring and this is still really it's really too heavy there's gonna be there's gonna be some stuff down here okay let's get this baffle out of the way and what do we have here wow well there's another rod bolt and what's odd nope this broke off that rod bolt look at the threads are destroyed the ends destroyed oh there's more connecting rod oh a bearing yeah you need those to be a little thicker than that ring ring ring somebody pick up the phone already look at this the amount of debris in here lots of debris i didn't think that one cylinder could cost so much destruction especially in a relatively low stress engine all piston chunks that's amazing there's still a little bit of oil in here it's probably the amount of oil that was in this engine when it let go it's it's pretty bad there's the bottom of that baffle took a direct impact at least one actually more more like several some rings in there i pulled out of the pan of course wrist pin is perfect if they just made the whole engine out of the wrist pin it'd be fine okay now we can flip this thing over i bet it's going to leak a bunch of stuff because they always do wow so as you can see there's a few more holes in the block than there are supposed to be it removes the section of main cap girdle that's the center piece here it's much like the mazda speed engines i've torn down it ripped this section apart this section and this section and that's that's one rod and if you look really closely there's some remains of rod bearing there not much and what likely happened is this engine was run low on oil and g i have no idea how and this person ignored all the warning signs and continued to drive and likely when the engine was trying to stall they powered through it and then the rod powered through the inside of the engine now let's try to get this oil pump out of here [Music] oh that sounds bad i bet you there's some oil in here if i turn this the other way is it pumping oil out somewhere it's a really strong tensioner there i don't know if i can get this apart yet that's a no well we can try to force it i like that idea let's see what happens here oh it was an idea i didn't say it was a good one [Music] all right well let's get the pickup out of the way at the very least since we're struggling with this and normally i would take a hammer to the gear on the oil pump but instead of that we're just going to use these because these will literally cut anything except for maybe this chain i just need more leverage ooh sparks i'm wearing safety glasses don't worry yahtzee now i can slide that piece right off and into the bin now we need to get this out but first we're going to see if there's any earl in it oh that sounds funny all right i'm done playing and i've made a mess all over the floor it's worth it but i still can't get the 10 millimeter bolts out so we're gonna have to you know we're gonna have to uh we're just gonna have to you know wow that's a lot stronger than the mazda ones the mazda one's usually fatter like that so really we only need to break one part of it so that we can rotate it around and have access to all of the bolts and voila now these pumps don't usually come apart that easily when i can't get this out we're gonna try to give it a couple smacks with a hammer see what happens it's actually coming apart look at that we were able to get it apart the inside texture of this is not what it's supposed to be let's give this a bath so the oil pump has some wear on the outside of this part there's some grooves on this part and the overall finish of both this and the rotor pretty rough they're definitely not supposed to look like that they're supposed to have a much nicer machined finish we've seen lots of oil pumps on this channel and the inside of this it definitely had a lot of material run through it for quite some time before i get the rest of the rods and pistons out i have to be able to turn this engine over or remove this main cap girdle so that's what we're gonna do next we're gonna get this out of the way and then i should have access to all of the rod bolts let's try this one next it's always one all right now that my compressor's filled back up let's see if i can get a burst of air here yes i need a bigger hose that did it i don't know how hard it's gonna be to get this out because it's so messed up you know what where's the hammer oh it's in two pieces so it's a two piece one of those two piece units so does this one come out easy perfect now let's see if this crank will turn over i still have my doubts but you know oh yeah okay so now uh oh there's something going on back here that's just not right so what the let let go come on oh i dropped it so i got to show you guys this so there's cylinder one and there's cylinder two deleted cylinder three but look at the angle of the dangle why is that rod facing that way what is going on here there's some something bad is going on over here and it looks like there's another piston mcnugget in there to complete the meal you know as always you want to start in the front don't understand what's going on here oh oh cylinder ones bearings are spun cylinder twos are okay we know threes have been deleted and four looks okay as well but we haven't peeled them back yet no the bearings are one with all of this apparently oh we're relieving the engine of rods and pistons already i missed the memo i don't really know what happened there but see if we can get this crank out nope not that easy huh let's get the bearing out of the way oh it comes right out oh oh oh oh oh it's fine now cylinder four wow another piston mcnugget and it actually stretched that rod from part of cylinder three hitting the top of this rod while the crank was turning and it cracked the rod that is so awesome i've done my best to recreate what piston and rod number three would look like it's kind of like a bunch of bones from a skeleton but cylinder one the reason you don't see any bearings here i'll show you in a minute the wrist pin is really not quite as loose as you'd like to see yeah it's got some tight spots especially that direction yeah that's bad but the rod doesn't have any marks from a fight or anything i don't think any of the debris made it that far however the bearing is spun that's part of the crankshaft now on cylinder two well the bottom of the piston skirt is broken and the bottom of the piston has lots of marks the rod has marks this thing waged a and the wrist pin barely moves i can't even yeah it's very very stiff the bearings are ugly obviously this one's been deleted now this is the coolest one i think this is piston number four wrist pin feels good there's a little bit of marks on the bottom of the piston but the wild thing is that rod so what i think happened is this thing was turning you know at idle or 5000 rpm one of the two it was a manual i will tell you that so they were likely driving it pretty easily or as hard as possible and when this let go part of piston and rod number three made its way into cylinder number four and got lodged between the block and the top of the rod and that stretched the mo the momentum of everything stretched this rod and almost broke that rod in half that is amazing that is a counterpiece for sure or maybe i'll give it away we'll see the bearings for that cylinder pretty ugly but the best of the crank i mean the battering ram so you can see lots of marks here there's the remains of cylinder three's bearings part of the crank now there's even marks all the way almost to cylinder one but not quite so s cylinder one spun is bearings on its own accord i mean focus accord and the crank yeah pretty rough the main bearings are also pretty torn up classic case of oil starvation whether it was not enough or a blockage this is the result the block has all sorts of carnage there's a hole in the front hole in the back that one's for you jim a couple holes in the back and when you get into this cylinder it even broke a hole laterally in the block all right there's one more thing i'd like to do and i want to blow air backwards through the pickup because i want to see what comes out do we see any orange rtv or is it just metal or is it something else so this can i don't have my rubber tipped one so this one will have to suffice all right ready turn your head and cough i'm just flinging all kinds of crap out of here all right let's gather this stuff so it's all metal it did not look metal when it came out but it is all metal there's some varying materials some reynolds bearing wrap part of a ring and some more piston debris i don't see i think this is all aftermath lots of metal specs and bits sparkles this is where all the sparkles went i think we all know what happened here let's face it ford focuses are not super expensive vehicles and they're typically not treated or cared for as well as more expensive vehicles and they go to cheaper shops or your uncle or your neighbor or some random guy for repairs which can work out okay i'm not saying that those are all bad ideas however the further away from an actual business you go to repair a vehicle the more likely that you'll find a single cheek repair like this and that's what led to the demise of this engine it was both someone that didn't work on this in the correct way and someone that ignored all of the warning signs these this doesn't just happen i mean yes engines blow up all day every day however not like this this was a catastrophic failure somebody was hard on it maybe they hated the car and they want to get rid of it or maybe they had no idea and they were wondering why it kept going slower and slower and making all this racket and they gave it the old italian tune-up which doesn't work in this situation this was a lot of fun to take this engine apart and i've never torn down an early version of this type of engine this early duratec engine so it was kind of cool to see a lot of the same design as the ecoboost engines and as the mazda mzr which i also love regardless nothing's good out of this engine it's all gonna end up in the bin unless i keep that rotten piston that one is pretty cool i might give that away at some point we'll see i hope you enjoyed this teardown if you'd like to buy parts off of not this this is mine but i've got a 95 mustang gt manual in and i bought a three valve parts truck what i anyway i hope you enjoyed this video as always i love all the comments all the feedback and even the criticism i love it all and i'll catch you on the next
