hey guys deck here it's been a while since we've done a carving video or oiled my chair but it's time I would like to do a gnome I've been on gnome kick lately some of you have seen this book before secrets of the gnomes it is a fantastic book the illustrations are so good so good so here I'll show you one more picture here right one of my favorites look at the troll and the troll trap little decoy gnome that they made and there's a gnome making the decoy so that's what we're gonna do we're gonna do a gnome just like that another decoy so no it's good ears arms straight down and we'll keep it easy but I'm due for a tutorial for you guys and I just like to make one for myself I've died and similar in the past like I think I showed this guy before but little gnome here with gave him a little birdhouse and I'm bird on his hand I kind of like the king of the birds gnome little straightforward guy with his hands in his pockets so I've got a piece of wood here that is put into three eighths by four and a half inches high that's basswood and I think I use a inch and 3/4 he'll be one of my favorite knives was this get going so I'll move the camera and we'll start our Noma as we like to do when we're starting out is gonna find a center a center mark there on our wood now we're gonna do that on all the sides all the way around just to keep everything in perspective you went across the top maybe alright and then right off the bat we're gonna go if that's four and a half we're gonna go halfway say two and a quarter we're gonna put that mark on all the way around doesn't have to be perfect just roughly the center of the block will give a little a half inch at the bottom to just to mark where the the feet are gonna go okay so right off the bat I'm gonna go from the center mark here to here I'm just gonna make this a flat angle right right to Center all right I'm just gonna take a bit but I'll just do the one side and then I'll do the other side off-camera so this is where it's a little bit nicer to have a longer knife just to get more more wood and going on both sides but right from the line up now even this is not gonna have to be doesn't have to be perfectly straight it's all rough but we're just trying to get to that Center mark a nice fairly even plane we have a carving glove you better get your carving glove on I'm not wearing one I know it's hypocritical but I don't don't like to wear them although I know they're good for me so you know what to call me names like some of you have but I recommend the carving glove and keep your fingers out of the way of the blade all right all right let's got a little bit of a little bit of a round on it but basically that halfway mark just just a slight little curve on there but that's okay all right so I'm gonna do the other side then I'm gonna come back okay you see that just a little bit a little bit round there so your marker back out on the side that we cut off let's get our center line back on there like that all right then we're just gonna do pretty much the same idea trying to join that side to the front all right it's not gonna be perfect but just gonna go right across in fact we're trying to get to center here so it's gonna work better if we do both at the same time [Applause] [Applause] never doing there just a little bit of uh where we go see that I'm just kind of brought that to a point the exact same thing in the back okay now we marked where our feet are gonna go so I'm just going to take those little cuts out right now just to have them in place so that we can get it all in the right order here we know where our feet are gonna go and then we can go from there just barking it will go deeper later but just to have a general okay back to our our center line here we're just gonna come in basically that center line is gonna be the shoulders so we're just gonna get them marked in there just a big feet cut taking it with a the line all right and then we'll just coming across no we're not going full depth or nothing over just getting to know where the shoulders are gonna be all right so we'll deepen them up later but so a centerline is basically a top of your shoulders and that's gonna go in quite a bit different quite a bit deeper after like I said just trying to get everything placed where it's gonna be now we can clean up all the cuts after you go deeper but we know now that this is the feet here that's the back so we know that we can take this angle right to the center center point here sorry on the back so just again for perspectives sake we'll just take that off we're not marking this is not the blob of the hat or nothing yet it's just getting the shape but we won't do that yet on the front till we get the face in place all right so we got a rough shape we can do the take the corners off the back too you see how all that chipped off like that just kind of splintered off then you know you're going the wrong way you can come the other way and it shouldn't happen all right see that so that we can just kind of like that you know it doesn't break coming up that way all right now the center line we're gonna end up losing it so let's just put a little a little V cut in there just to separate the legs then we know what to keep marking it there just look all right we're getting there we can progress anyway you can see our centre line is here so if we want to come up just about Oh a good healthy half-inch five-eighths let's just put a knock cut in here like this like that and this is actually the bottom of our nose all right just like that so we've got a straight cut it's a ball my nose and then we'll just come back on the angle each way all right they're just like that okay that will take it Oh we'll give it another half inch as well and we can just kind of come in come down v-cut there we can get rid of that and make a little shelf here just going to flatten above the nose nice even flat spot above the nose well curve there okay so let's just gonna come down on each side of the nose roughly that I'll just come out of the angle both ways drink of that see her nose place down there alright okay you can see we've got our nose in place I'm just gonna come right on the center and I'm gonna make a little bit of a shelf just a little light shelf there Sammy other way we're gonna do the same kind of eyes that we've been putting on the pumpkin video kind of like cartoony eyes see how we got that a little bit of a say we got a little bit of a shelf now okay clean that up just a little bit more make sure it's dead center we've got that bit of a little ledge there on top there was nose we're gonna take that Center mark and draw a straight up here alright I'm ready to see the side of the valley ball here seems right here alright see that never just gonna try and loop them around as uniform as we can alright see that big guys but don't don't forget these are half half eyelids alright okay just stick the tip of my knife in there maybe a little bit of a back angle if anything at all just follow that line around say I'm on this side all right let's go undercut that okay I'm just gonna cut the outline on there like that I'm just gonna round it over a bit all right I'm going to go right down the center I'll take a little bit cut out of there on both sides the same all right now just draw the lids on their data coming coming back down on the aside and the same thing just cut him right now maybe a bit of a back cut I see my hand was shaking uh um I just had a coffee jittery must be camera nerves all right that's right we're just gonna take those little corner cuts that we like to do give it some depth in the corners so a shadow hmm there's our eyeballs all right okay you can see we've got our eyes done let's just come across here basically even with the top of the eyes and just put a little notch on that center line up atop the ice and come down okay just a little a little nick in there same on the other side all right don't come down oh my good give it a good half an inch and do the exact same thing on the bottom all right okay so that's the area of the ears so we're going to protect these spots here as ears but we can take a lot of this front corner off of here right on up through deeper than that cut on here in right down under that feet if you like splitting this is okay luckily we've got more to remove the splitting doesn't really matter just clean it up we are kind of working towards the center mark again and with this rounding of the front up this is making sense I haven't done tutorial for a long time but we'll stop there for now so he's got a nice sleek shape on the front all right so let's draw the Hat here mm-hmm no I want that ear on the side to kind of be above the Hat there to stick up outside of the Hat all right then you weighed it way down so we can take all these corners off to you they do nothing all right we should get those ears in place if the ear is in place and then we can start on the beard and the arms okay so from the centerline let's just come back a quarter-inch we'll just make it square square ear for now like that all right take the front to the back corner now you can see the shape of the Hat coming together let's get this down are really digging on the shoulders now oh yes the ears so if we take our pencil and come down a quarter inch in front of the ear like so same on this side you can just do it cut line cut these aren't these aren't fancy ears these are very simple because I'm simple I'm just think I cut up to that line a bit of a angle and then into it from the other side so now we're gonna we're getting them to come out of it okay you see how let's flare it out a bit same thing on this side we're gonna cut into it from both sides no there'll be side braids in front of it - all right let me take off front corner this one's a longer corner a little bit higher take that off this corner train I love it as the train goes by you see that a little bit alright do the same thing on this side on our ear we're gonna make a cut like this basically a triangle just like that it's kind of more of more or less a chip cut where I'm just gonna come in on three sides on the angle does an angle cut all three ways I'm just gonna take that chip over there you can't see I cut my fingers in the way say I take a little little three-cornered cut of there no this might get just a little bit bigger and really that's pretty much it for a simple ear you can't kind of flare it a little bit maybe this little little triangle chip cut let's uh let's bring these feet down before we mark the beard and we're gonna cut these quite a ways in all right take the corners off take the v-cut of the center then we don't have to worry about lines anymore at all all right we will revisit that again later but let's mark the bottom of our beard so that's still the center line right here so we can go oh we can still go a good good half inch below that right down there yeah oh he's gonna start coming together more in the same way we did at the bottom of our nose we can do the same cut up it's way all right and will this mark a quarter inch on each side of the the centerline and we can we got a rough in those arms maybe just above the foot groove so we can do that cut first with us take that alright see how we're just marking it on the side okay just come down you can use your v tool as well I'm gonna do one with this and we'll use the V two on the other side this is a Drake helvi quarter inch neat tool now we're not finishing the arms we're just kind of placing them so that we know where they're gonna be on both sides that's pretty square shoulder so I'm just gonna knock those round those off now you can see his back so we need to be a little but inden so let's come up with Oh an inch give a little button down take that right from the bottom up now okay now look around the back to the bottom of the head and we can fine-tune the but after this rough this wave is a bit of a to see on the backside all right alright let's go on to the moustache and the beard sideburns in the Hat a mustache that goes down gives her more of an angry angry look but if we take a mustache like that with the beard all right that is a happier mustache we're gonna make our gnome a happier gnome alright so we're just gonna take that mustache here where am I here you go and we'll just bring it out like that little little hook up like that and then right down like this alright so we'll get that mustache cut in there and then the beard will come up with the sideburns up into the Hat alright but mustaches first so let's cut this mustache in or you can see what I'm doing you get that just a little bit a little bit deeper looking mighty undercutting in the bottom here okay see these little corners here we do our little little chip cut here and give a little bit of shadow to the nose a little more depth look on this side a little freaking three-way cut let's see what this gives that shadow all right we're getting there okay hat I want that top of the Hat just above his eyes okay but that I wanted to come down and out the ears outside of the Hat okay same on this side I want that ear outside of the Hat come down yeah we'll just joined up I think so all right so I was gonna cut in there up to it all the way around okay there's our little a little hat see I like to have the ears up into the Hat like that all right so now the beard we need the sideburns in front of the ear all right I'm gonna come down to the to the mustache okay there you see we got that sideburn in place right down the moustache hang like that Oh your little corner chip out of here okay we're making progress I take a little to stab my knife in the little V in the mouth take a little a little hole little V cut for his mustache line all right I'm gonna take that a little little lip in there it's a little a little bit of a lip that's kind of come right up underneath of it like that okay okay quite the nice round beard bring that down like that the year you draw a line right down there we're gonna cut that down just like so it's gonna separate the hair a lot of guys do the hair and the beard all in one one swoop like right around but it should be separate okay I'm just gonna make the hair here okay a nice big big beard on the guy we got the hair separated both sides alright so now we're just gonna go around and kind of round the beard a little bit I'll just do that off camera it's gonna get with some shape taking off all these marks we're getting there so we've got there our head pretty much done at the hair in the back got the beard separated from the hair so we got these arms that we started just to know where they were so let's just dig them down a little bit deeper see that good those arms I'm going to use the V tool again just for a speed sake let's kind of get those arms down in there I'm gonna do just a shoe with the pant legs coming up like this okay just bring those pants down do the pants will come over the top a little bit I'll just round them all off to till we do that one side there like that then a couple of well-placed the beat cuts here I give the illusion of the pants kind of bag it up a little bit I'll do that all the way around gonna get this center line up to the butt a little cut across the bottom little V and again the feet cuts just like so uh some kind of saggy saggy pants so what I want to do is see how I I finished his pants around there like that you got a little jacket on here and so I need to transfer that jacket around to the front of him and I want to give it a little bit of a little bit of a belly you know normal attack it doesn't really hang straight oh oh excuse me again so I was gonna cut that that's like so just to get the bottom of that jacket in place and then we can split the legs on the front and I get that I want to get a belt on the little jacket now we're ready for a bit of a belt oops all right with a buckle on the front so basically all I'm gonna do with that means which way we go here just gonna cut that around like that then just cut up to it just like that all right same thing in the bottom [Applause] something that yeah now this is a little bit different on the front and where I'm gonna put that buckle so I'm just gonna kind of cut the buckle on first okay good too fancy here I'll just cut up to it make that all the same level then they'll come in to Ilyas all right okay no I'm just gonna cut down I'm just gonna do the same things as the back on the front I don't want to be labor like the video too long there's the belt a little buckle on there just a square and a square but that's basically it so what we didn't do is we haven't split our legs yet so that's just I was going to do a little deep cut right to the bottom of the coat and just kind of hook it around not a big deal all right always has to be one little splinter hanging off all right all right legs are split so just gotta do some hands so right off the bat let's just come up a half an inch on the hands put a cut across and then cut into it from the bottom all right same the other side up into it now it's up to you what you want to do with that but the hand is not as wide as the shirt sleeves so you wanna cut back into it this way see on the front they cut down into it then we've got our sides Sam the other side down up into it all right take the corners off and you can do whatever you like if you want to keep it a glove I think I'll just keep it a glove there should be a little thumb here which is basically just a matter of taking that rounding that over just gonna make a little little thumb around it I hope you can see that very good a little bit deeper all right you see that no he just came a little little thumb a little notch there it shows of thumb with the same thing on this side I put a little a couple little creases in the and the arms like here yeah same on the back there we can see a little bit of texture you can put a couple couple little notches same to the bottom like do if you want do that here - what no I think we're just we're ready for paint so there's our little little gnome we're ready for some paint all right so here's our finish a little man actually I kind of like him I was a little bit nervous this I hope this video doesn't come out how I feel a little bit clunky but I'm still having fun I just had a practice I think but I'm not going to texture the beard or anything we're just gonna paint it as is and the paints I'm going to use our full cart paints I'm going to just take my brush take a little dab of paint dip it in the water and I'm gonna put on wet so it soaks in like a stain and I'm not gonna make you watch the whole thing but maybe I'll just give you a little quick little montage and then I'll see you on the other side of him painted the end the video all right [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] all right here's our little our little fella Oh paint it up I've been using a new antiquing solution that's made by our art minds it's just antiquing wax I picked it up at Michael's craft store so that I don't have a link or anything but what I don't like doing and I forgot I think the same thing on this guy - I don't like antiquing on white and I forgot to remember from this one on this one but you can always go back and repaint the white after you've antique if you want antique you don't even have to antique it all but you can always go back and repaint the white I always do the eyes after the antiquing as well because you just get the blood out so anyway there's our little fella I think he would pass on the troll decoy test in anyway we're all learning together having some fun hope you like it and I'll see you on the next one see ya
