yeah [Music] Wow [Music] Liz like the ultimate Hot Wheels car [Music] hi I'm Dennis gage and welcome to my classic car well this week we're down in st. George Utah to visit Ron Barry check out a couple of his crazy cartoon custom creations I met Ron a few years ago at a car show and he had just debuted this crazy shorebreak woody about his extreme and insane things I've ever seen did a little piece on it there but I said I got to get closer to the someday then I hear Ron finishes this 23-window VW Bus that's like totally over the top I said we're going to Utah this is gonna be so much fun [Music] Ron great to see you again man hey it's a pleasure you never stop do you I don't know I guess doesn't seem like I can come to a finish so I'm gonna keep going I'm gonna keep going in well use it was a few years ago that I met you right and you had you had the shore break this crazy crazy cartoon woody and I was just I fell in love with and we did a little piece on it there but I always knew I wanted to come back and look at it more closely but then you did this but then you went and did this this is probably one of the craziest things I've ever seen Ron it's a 23 well started as a 23-window bus right VW bus it actually still has 23 windows actually 24 actually 24 would you put the 24 right let me split the back window at the back what's the inspiration where do you get rid of these things come from man that's inspiration from all the cartoonists and me too I kind of use their artwork and come up with my own artwork but it has a lot of character you know to where I don't think I've ever seen anyone walk up to it and not smile how do you do that that's gonna be a tough thing to achieve I'm just looking for that wow factor as well as the animation then with all my background on you know 50 some years of doing this I'm able to hammer out some pretty unusual stuff yeah well and that's another thing I mean this is all metal also steel I was in your shop I didn't see an English wheel oh yeah yeah I've got done some of the most exotic mallets and hammers you've ever seen and sandbags and stuff mean is that are you basically forming right whatever is the right shape is what you this isn't still a Volkswagen platform a little bit of it the front control mechanisms for the throttle you know pedals and the steering I used all that I used of course the Volkswagen motor and transaxle torsion bar suspension I did change the front to a coil over suspension we've done a lot of crazy stuff you know I mean I like I like the the kick-out windows out your air conditioning of course yeah I'm Safari when the Safari windows and then I was looking at your headlights which again everything the proportions are always extreme but correct so they're big headlights and what do those come off of and I'm looking at them well you know you can buy headlight buckets through the catalog yeah and they're you know 7-inch bucket well that's not the scale so I went to Walmart and found these 11 inch stainless steel solid bowls that's what that is that is what that is the Walmart solid bowl yeah and then how about the bulb mount well yeah in the center I turned a I shook up backwards and mounted my bulb so it hangs out there where it should be to reflect and be correct and it's just insane and then you kept the the vwv but you've got this incredible chrome mmm strip that goes you know belt lines very high belt yeah highways high-water belt when you get older than you open yeah open her up and everything's key fob operator right yep everything is underneath I will leave a remote so I mean I love the sofa what we call Road couch Road couch very nice very nice I also like how you mounted the gauges in the door yeah I mean in the dash door because the dash is the door you got all your push buttons there because I'm a jenever ething SunPower but you know even your headlight I mean everything about this is just it's incredible the wood and the wood everywhere is fantastic and one of the things I don't see a single screw or fastener how did you pull that off oh that's something I come up with and was introduced to these rare earth magnets so I applied all the wood in here with magnets you see the magnets on the back and every piece of wood in here is like that so you can you can have this ultra clean look yeah and you know a blonde who a girl that had to be hard to find oh yeah it was a tough one I had to go clear to Redondo Beach oh my goodness yeah worth the trip though you know the other thing I think is cool is you kept your rain gutter on the car I think that I mean it looks so Volkswagen right and then this the one door the one side door is is over here and it opens like it would normal in a bus oh man it's just again I mean it's just incredible and you could put at least four across even five across this isn't fatter than the bus or not oh yeah quite a bit wider so you bulged it I did that's part of that cartoon look yeah I'll say and you can take a nap on the sofa at a car show and she shuts beautifully I love the wheels and and again they're huge but proportionally they're right I'll bigger these back here these are twenty fours my goodness and then you know all the way back here and by the way I love I love your run bear oh I love devices that's just with the stash I mean and by the way that's one heck of a stash I am humbled by your stash I got so what's the engine the engines a 20 to 75 and it a pretty exotic which of course opens by keyfob right of course and one of the neat features about this motor is that it was designed by a famous drag racer dick Landy well I see dick Landy's name right there right so him and bnm got together and designed the intake system for this in late 80s early 90s probably an ultra rare engine oh yeah I think we're thinking it might be the last surviving one man what are the what are the wooden will oh that's what seem like that's just in case because pretty hefty motor yeah you need wheelie bars just in case that's my take on a weenies get bored wheelie bars I like that and you're you're a surfer from back in the day - this is perfect oh yeah it's pretty insane you and let let me driver would you oh heck yeah oh heck yeah whoa whoa what so you're a Volkswagen guy okay I am today by golly let's do this thing we both look like a couple cartoon characters let's go man yeah yeah it would be fun oh here we go it's pretty rowdy engine two in it yeah rowdy boy this sounds healthy my goodness what this baby really barks it marks you like doing that dude [Music] this is pretty insane you just not have to lay down to see out of it but the Headroom in here is crazy like a backseat especially it's amazing how much room there is it here the height is all part of that character in the animation if it didn't have the height that would look more like a standard Volkswagen bus slow and you'll see that you'll see short buses right and and they look you know they just I don't know they look kind of odd they don't boy listen I can they don't have any real character this one you short did the squeeze did and it popped up right that that made it I mean that was like that's it [Music] how long did it take you to build this I mean this there's some complicated engineering in here it was about 17 months total that's I'm astounded at that and this is all steel - this isn't some fiberglass right I mean this is a lot of work oh yeah but uh you know I'm kind of like when I get focused you know that we're excessive yeah thanks yeah like anonymous was obsessive right yeah there you go this is crazy you know what the challenge is now how am I gonna top this and how are you I don't know how you're gonna pull that one I don't I'm working on it I've had several sketches so if you've been sketching all your life I mean like we've the kid in high school wasn't really paying attention was drawing cars yeah I knew that I knew that I missed out on some education what a crazy vehicle I just I can't get over this thing I like looking at the darn thing but still today well that was totally crazy that was that was as crazy as it looks that thinks that things are a handful Oh Majan you cruise it all that much Raya it's not for driving to my fish well this is this is the car you had when I met you yeah this number of years ago what do you call you call the shore break right yep totally crazy a woody but it but a totally crafted accentuated rendition of one right right yeah my my subtle animations your subtle animation and and this was your first cartoon car right right the first in my series there will be a there will be a seriously they run very serious I love that I love it and I love the door handle it that I don't know it reminds me of something I just I can't think what I got I open it oh sure let me give it a little oh that's right here it's right it's all fob no no wonder and I mean when I first saw this Ron it's just everything about this car cracks me up but you know the the beach theme is everywhere here right so what are the seats did you did you have to make those or those yeah I made the seats or made the tubing and course had it chrome but there's a seatbelt material inside of the only actually you're actually sitting on a seat the webbing well nylon webbing and then you you know you got the surfboard inside oh yeah that's a kind of a trick deal I had to figure out a way to hold it in place and also fill up the gap work yeah board goes in so I put a bicycle tube inside of a box I built so it runs around it runs around the board and then you inflate it with a handle in the center of console and it pinches the board right and fills the gap totally crazy dip take the fender off to get a tire oh no yeah that feature came about because of the size of the tire so I created this where I can open the fender Oh with a key fob it also allows me to put fuel in it well that's what the gas filler is - and then you can get your tire on right oh that's Brian man that is that is pretty smooth - what are your motors are they oh I have most everything I've use and this is a lineal actuator uh-huh well that's how the front end opens - right right let's open that up and have a look at the power plant for this baby the doors basically have to be open because the vendors tucked down under the door under the door yeah okay off we go now this one's moving a fairly hefty chunk oh yeah that's fiberglass and frame - that's a sizable piece of body there dad looks pretty healthy that's a 302 Mustang roller motor they call him man and I put a little bit of an exotic intake system on it I like that do we take this one Oh - oh sure wait please yeah the driver today [Music] I can see out of this one Ron oh yeah you know I still don't know where the body is no I can't figure out where that is but but at least I could see ahead of me and these kids have got a big this thing what is that yeah it is it's like the ultimate Hot Wheels car though you know I mean it's like it's like this ultimate toy what's the platform that this is built on well there's a lot of features in this that are from a 83 Mustang so like the Fox Body Mustang yeah but they call the box the bus is a handful I mean if you're on you gotta be on that thing all the time this is this is pretty nice to drive yeah how we're steering yeah air conditioning oh man just like downtown it's a little bit squirrely when you drive it because pretty well-known you don't mix radio tires and bias-ply tires together yeah okay well we got bias on the rear and radio on the front just a rebel from the beginning I found out why'd you do that by the way the rear tires of big Pro Street is for the scale give that animated look and then front tires had to be large as well and the only thing I could find to scale was these radio BM Lynn rich we gave you the look and feel of a cartoon another feature I get a kick out of here is you know you think of the old fast the cue ball shifter hmm well this is more like a bocce ball it's a bocce ball yeah hello your air bag the beach ball yeah safety for safety first and I actually feel like I'm a cartoon character he's caused myself it's great I love it I can't wait to run build something else too I'm coming back here

It seems like the engine would not get enough air? They have a huge air intake, but it's in the trunk all covered up

Wow, these cars took amazing skill and craftsmanship to build, yet they don't take themselves too seriously. I love it!
