and then i clicked buy because it was a ridiculous under pricing on the behalf of carmax when you're the car person in a relationship or in a family you occasionally get tasked with having to find cars or help with the sale of cars for individuals be it your significant other mother father sister brother whatever it might be and typically that's invited you know i'm happy to happy to help out and in this case i certainly was too my significant other she's a just finished her residency a new physician she had a toyota corolla that was time for the pastor as we sought out a replacement and she was you know excited to get something that was perhaps more enthusiast oriented because she knew that i was in the car market she was pursuing i think new accords perhaps the sport model i of course suggested a 2018 amg e63s wagon and a beautiful color combination that was available cpo with a warranty it was a little big for her she wanted something smaller but it had to be cpo with a warranty something she could live with as a shrewd negotiator we settled right in the middle with a 2018 bmw m3 dct but you know close enough tanzanite blue over the tobacco interior very very nice car she claims to enjoy it very much i certainly do in the process of searching for cars for her because i knew that having a warranty um or a cpo was essential warranties are not all the same you know cpo warranties especially from large manufacturers can be great they are not what are called exclusive warranties they are inclusive warranties they say hey we'll cover the following things and nothing else what's great about certain large volume dealership national companies is they have what's called an exclusive warranty it says we'll cover everything except x y and z now that when you have a particularly complicated car it's really really great because most inclusive warranties don't write things like massaging seeds or night vision because it's typically not on the menu such as the case with the car that i ended up finding as i was perusing a website that i don't typically look for rare amg cars for carmax i had an alert set up for the w221 s65 amg had it set up for a couple of years it never goes green and you know hand to god happened to be looking for whatever it is that she wanted at the time i think it was some sort of is f or something and i had a little bing that went up in the corner and there's a new w221 s65 amg in your search history and i looked at it it had 36 000 miles it was black over cashmere and i looked at the auto check and had low ownership i didn't have a story i didn't have rims on it and it didn't have any significant problems it was priced at about 36 37 000 so i went on to a few other websites to look at recent sales and i saw this car for about 37 000 and then i looked at the recent sales from a few days prior about seventy thousand dollars and then i looked back i looked back again and then back again and then i clicked buy because it was a ridiculous underpricing on the behalf of carmax because despite what mmr or whatever calculations they might have been using it was nowhere close to the value of this car they priced this car in line with mmr values now must have a story right it must be you know a total wreck it's not you know the car is very well sorted it's got full expel it's got full ceramic coating on it they put four brand new michelin pilot sport 4s tires on it it's got a great service history there are no blemishes no issues i just i think they me they missed it on this one which is you know fortunate for me but the the point is is that it happens maybe there's they didn't update their models for the s65 amg because it's not something that comes through all the time and there there could have been a gap in in the pricing because these haven't been as in demand as they are now recently certain large volume dealers have an extra incentive to want to buy a car from them so buying a used car is always a risky venture risky proposition you never know quite what you're getting you have to trust the salesman that he's giving you something is represented honestly that it's been maintained you can use carfax you can use records to sort of verify some of that stuff but you're never insured against future disaster carvana is one company that offers a 30-day period within which if you have an issue they'll fix it you can take advantage of that you can exploit that take it to the dealer have them replace as many things as you want to maximize your dollar value with that purchase but that's only a 30-day period as we all know from seeing doug's videos uh every other youtuber in the world's video that's talked about carmax carmax has a fantastic warranty you can get it up to five years or 125 000 miles i think and get it with a deductible as low as zero dollars or fifty dollars but they will insure the car bumper to bumper against anything that's not a consumable not factoring in what i found to be the cherry which is the bumper two bumper carmax warranty which is an exclusive warranty providing coverage for everything that is not a consumable or an interior wear item so should i decide to blow up two turbos or burst the abc system they can cut a check for 40 000 to cover it and i'll continue to enjoy my s65 amg i knew i had only a few minutes to make a decision whether or not to secure this car and have it shipped or let it disappear into the ethos and some other fast fingered clicker so i had it sent i got it bought and was incredibly happy with the result the issue being of course is that i don't really need an s65 amg with a five-year bumper-to-bumper warranty for a hundred thousand miles because i have 15 other cars and i don't drive that much were i an individual who commuted significant distance on a daily basis and wanted the perfect luxury rocket sedan to take me there this would be the car for it but it doesn't happen to fit my particular lifestyle at this moment so what this affords me the opportunity to do is take this car and curate it for the mb market this is an example of the cars that we seek out to bring to the enthusiast market that follow us so that they can find opportunities that otherwise would be lost in the in the ether of the internet so what i think is a sort of notch in our bed post or you know significant example of what has worked for us in the past is something that happened very early on in our existence it was actually the second car that we had listed and it was a big part of our launch campaign a car that we set a world record for only eight days after having been in existence is a public auction platform this is a car that a prior company that i worked with helped import from japan about a year or two prior a 1990 300 ce 24 valve 3.4 amg wide body coupe of which there are very very few that just so happened to be in the savannah area where we had sold it to the prior owner and he for some reason or another felt that facebook marketplace with like two photos would be the best place to say give me a hundred thousand dollars for the car 90 000 whatever he was asking and when i saw it i thought it might be a scam because i recognized the car but nothing seemed to make sense i reached out to him was able to make contact and it was in fact the same person we had sold the car to and after a brief conversation i was able to show him that craigslist facebook marketplace auto trader not auto tempest but these other places were not the best place to maximize value for this asset that he had what he needed is someone to help tell the story of why this is a valuable car this wasn't just a black mercedes wide body that he had some information about but this was in fact a documentable block stamped amg card that was built in a falter box it was sent direct from the factory to a faulter box to become one of the less than 200 wide body w124 coupes so with significant happening on our part which we're happy to give we set a world record selling that car for close to 160 000 with fees which is far more than he was asking for in his facebook marketplace post and something that brought us a lot of pleasure you know because i had prior experience with that car and because we thought it was emblematic of what we're trying to do with the mb market is to take cars that should be brought to a larger market that should be brought to enthusiasts who want them and give them the opportunity to find them this thing could have died on a facebook marketplace post in south georgia and nobody would have ever known about it or somebody may have stolen it for 85 thousand dollars wish it had been me but it wasn't uh instead we were able to use our platform our brand new platform at the time to bring that car to market now it's in canada with a very well-known dealer and i'm sure it'll go on to live the life that it should live as a heralded example of pre-merger amg history patrick adair designs makes some of the coolest rings out of the most interesting and exotic materials on earth whether it's a wedding band a fashion ring or just whatever reason you want to wear a ring he
