hi i'm dr lokendwala i'm the interventional cardiologist and today we're going to see a cardiac catheterization procedure done via the wrist [Music] so a heart catheterization procedure is a standard procedure used to diagnose and treat blockages in the heart arteries this can be for patients sometimes that are stable as an outpatient but at other times it can be in patients that are having a heart attack where this is an emergency procedure because the faster you open up the 100 blockage and restore the blood flow the more muscle that you can save and the better long-term outcomes that we have we identified by the ultrasound and then you can see that local fading structure there that's the artery traditionally cardiac catheterization was always done through the groin approach that's where we went up with the catheter nowadays we have had a newer approach where we go up through the wrist and this makes it much more easier safer and more convenient for the patient the wrist is a much more superficial artery and can be easily compressed and so we eliminate the chances of any major bleeding it also makes it very convenient for the patient because they don't have to lay flat after the procedure they can get up and walk pretty quickly an hour or two after the procedure and it cuts down their length of stay in the recovery unit so whenever you're having chest pain and we're worried about a heart attack the safest thing to do is come into the emergency room because if there is a blocked artery every minute counts towards saving the heart muscle
