you hey everybody out there on the interwebs I'd like to thank 52 cards Assad for having me on his channel my name is Jeremy Griffith also known as Los Angeles on Instagram I'm going to be showing you guys how to do the kuku dish also known as a kickback dish it has a lot of utilities you can use it as a visual change or vanish or you can use it as a hidden utility to steal cards in the middle of some other motion so we'll go into detail right now about how to do both those things okay so to begin with a ditch is in this case based on the concept of laughing a number of people have contributed to this probably the most famous contributor would be sleight Dini has excellent chapters in the annotated Slydini as well as in stars of magic which pulls from there there's also been works from Marlowe there's an entire section in card college on the concept of laughing what we're going to be doing here is lapping the card that's on top of the deck so the first thing to look out for is the position of the deck as you hold it in your hand now I'm I'm a lefty so if you're a right-hander sucks for you you're going to want to just reverse it so imagine that you're just staring at a mirror you're going to take the deck and you want it to rest at the crux between the side of the hand and the base of the thumb so right about there so there's a clear line off the deck toward you what you don't want is this corner digging into your thumb I see this happen a lot especially with people who have much larger hands it'll dig into their thumb in which case that top card doesn't go anywhere the kickback part of this happens because the side of the thumb contacts the front of the card and then shoots off the deck toward me and that happens in the same motion as I would use to grab the deck from my hand to place it forward so I would come here and I would grab the deck and set it down the kickback would happen in a very very similar motion the only difference being is that I'm going to take this thumb and make contact with the card as I reach for the edges of the deck to grab it so in full speed it's going to look like this you're going to come and kick it back and grab now this can be used in several applications this will be the non visual application meaning that it's not going to be perceptible from the audience point of view so you're going to use laughing as a form of card stealing in this case a card is chosen it's displayed and this is my favorite way to do this you display the card you set it back on top of the deck and you sweep away as if you're like wiping away dust and then as you go to grab the deck you kick it off into your lap and you set it down or you set it in front of someone to shuffle the deck at which point they can or you can start shuffling and hand it to them tell them to do the same thing that would be great because then they're not going to turn over the top card just a check but that's a very very good utility especially if you want to take a card out of play the second version of that is used as a visual change and you can either do this by turning the deck face up so having a card on display and then showing it and then kicking it off as you go to set the deck down this is great but it is risky what I normally suggest doing is a double lift and you can use your favorite I'm the fan of mark Nash's knockout double you set that face up on top of the deck and then the same motion you go to wipe dust or something and then you do the kick back set down and now it's visually changed into a completely different card the third application that you would want to do would be a vanish of vanish I would only recommend if you plan to make it reappear somewhere else in fact I sort of feel that way about vanishes in general people don't like it when the pretty lady just goes away and doesn't come back safely in this case if I were going to do this what I'd be doing is I'd be setting it on top in full view and then making some gesture I'd look up some form of misdirection and I set the deck down and then I would bring attention to the fact that the card is now gone some final thoughts that you want to bear in mind whenever you're using this ditch this form of lapping or any form of lapping it's very very difficult to do it as a visual surprise it usually works best with some form of misdirection when I do this I usually look up as I'm doing the ditching motion also you want to avoid the twitch that comes with doing this which is you come here and you try to really knock the card off the edge of the deck if if you tilt your hand just slightly the card largely falls into your lap so you don't have to do a quick a super quick motion to get it off the edge of the deck but I would recommend it's a lightness of touch Roberto gob had a great way of putting it in the very beginning of his books he says hold the deck as though you were holding a live bird not so hard that you'll crush it but not so light that it would fly away I would recommend that in this case the touching and the holding of the deck you want to be just light enough so that you've got freedom of motion but not so light that you know half the deck flies off when you go to do this move other than that guys if you have any questions again my name is lost Angeles on Instagram I'd love to hear from you you can send me a DM and look forward to talking with you about it you you
