totally honest this comes from a very very petty hustle where a guy would have say four spades and a club and at the end of the hand would throw them down like this and call a flush now in a loose game he may get away with that but the spread makes it devastating so let's say I'm the mainsheet and the guy who's holding this hand is my partner what I do is I bring the club to the front and I start betting as if I have a flush then at one point I put my hand down in front of me but I power away the odd club as I reach for money or whatever but I ditch the club and now literally a floor flusher because I'm only playing with four cards but I still keep betting a five-card flush that's at one point I'll pick them up do a bet I'll flex the card slightly upwards so now they have a little bit of a bend in them meanwhile my partner having been signaled to and he knows what I want will Palm off the one spade card here now it's not the same as a magician's palm a magician tends to palm this way a gambler tends to palm this way it means his hand can be nice and flat on the table the end of the hand is nigh I throw down my four cards and call them as a flush my partner pretending to be annoyed that I haven't shown the hand properly says let's have a look and spreads out a full five-card flush now what's important on technique for this is that the pawned card doesn't go on top there's a nine there if he spreads this way it's very obvious that an extra card has appeared so what he does is this as the hand comes in he lets this card ride down and underneath the hand so with the card the wrong way out as he comes in he spreads so the card appears underneath the hand so there you have the spread a devastating poker move designed to take the money five out of ten times maybe eight out of ten times and after all that's what cheating is all about mucking is the professional term for switching in Parman cards as an example let's take this as a stud poker hand it's pretty good as it stands with two face-up aces unfortunately our ever so humble cheat only has the four of spades in the hole however sneakily and unbeknown to the other players he also has the ace of spades palmed in his hand he is now about to in the process of turning this card face-up switch the ace of spades in here's how he does it he comes over and switches the cards in one motion leaving the bad card here and the good card here let's shift these out of the way so you can see how the switch works as the hands come in the fingers grip here and the cards slide together he now lifts with his thumb lifting away that bad card the card slides in and lifts into a palm position leaving the card switched to make the actual turn over he comes in lifts and at the point of doing the palm turns the card between his fingers so at some speed this is what the switch looks like here's the ace here's the bad card the cheats hand comes in and switches the card now exactly the same switch we've just used for one card can be used with two cards for a game of pontoon or blackjack in the pub for example the ace we've just switched in this one and found a good card to go with it King blackjack a great hand but the hand you've been dealt is a 9 and for a 13 which is not the greatest of hands so you have the two cards palmed here somebody says what have you got in your hand and as you turn the cards you switch in the blackjack now this is exactly the same switch but just I'll let you just have to be tighter with your hands because you're now holding 4 cards and not just two so the good hand is here the hand slides in again the cards are going to go to this position as they slide in underneath you then lift with your thumb stealing the top two cards away and as you do that you turn these two cards over it's a sort of thing that looks incredibly difficult to do but actually when you try it is not that bad so you're here lift and turn very exposed again the move one last time in super fast motion or super ish fast motion there's the good hand there's the bad hand somebody says what have you got and you turn to show your blackjack while sneakily stealing away you're somewhat sordid 13 the closest a lowdown petty hustler a pub player will come to true sleight of hand in a gambling sense is known as running a slug and here's how it works let's say he's playing stud poker at the end of the hand he's dropped out because it's not a great one he'll remember his cards - 5 9 10 and ace that's all he has to remember like a telephone number - 5 9 10 ace he throws those cards onto a discard pile but as he does so he'll bend the top card slightly crimping it let's make this very exaggerated so it's gonna show so he's crimped that - so there's his hand - 5 9 10 ace now one thing to notice about this is he positioned the highest card the ace at the back of the hand so they go onto the discard pile thrown away at the end of the hand the deals going to come to him he'll do a cut of the cards cutting at the crimped card so now he cuts here cutting that original hand back to the top of the pack he cuts the cards and shuffles leaving at least 5 cards on top he'll now do some form of false cut and depending on his expertise it may just be that or he may go for something quite swish but he'll false cut the pack now he's got a deal out the hands stud poker in most games is one card facedown and every other card face-up now they're going to be three more face-up cards to each hand but this guy already knows that the whole cards are 2 5 9 10 not an easy got the advantage of knowing everybody else's home card but he also knows that he holds the highest whole card the ace now he won't win every hand using method but he's certainly going to win 6 out of 10 in most pub gains of blackjack or pontoon the dealer will place cards face up underneath the deck it's known as burning up the cards it means that at the end of a full deck deal he can see exactly when the decks gone so they now know to shuffle again however this little system has given the gambler a tremendous edge his why let's take a hand that's come out as so a great blackjack for this player so the dealer can gather up the cards throwing them under the deck he'll now play the next hand 20 plays 1213 Oh should I go for it no unfortunately bust out so the dealer gathers up these hands squares the deck and is now in a perfect winning position but heavy money on this card a nine for you an ace for me five for you and there's my world pontoon exactly as predicted now how does the dealer do this well it's very very easy he waits for a good hand to come out for example an ace and Kings split this way so this guy has 15 this guy has 20 but what's very important is the cards face up under the deck so assuming this is the end of the hand the dealer will gather the cards in such a manner as to stack the pontoon for himself they go under the deck he then deals the next hand with now with no trickery at all as he gathers these cards this is when the sneakiness happens he gathers them on the original top of the deck one handed the squares the deck onto the table then as his hands come back the whole deck is turned so now he's dealing the hand off the original bottom of the deck which means of course that he'll get the pontoon now if you think that's a very obvious ploy that nobody could get away with but exact technique was used in Atlantic City casinos where they still deal blackjack from the hand to take two hundred and twenty five thousand dollars over a three-day period so don't say the easy stuff doesn't work so there you have it you now know some of the methods of both the amateur semi-professional and professional card cheats but a couple of points to bear in mind firstly if you knew nothing about this game before remember I've taught you everything you know about it that I haven't taught you everything I know about it so next time you go into a pub and sit down and think oh I may just try one of those moves remember it may be somebody like me sitting opposite you who knows an awful lot more so you're just as well to do the moves for fun and to make your friends happy and I must stress again entertainment purposes only because if you meet somebody like me somebody behind me will be a 14-week Freddie and they are going to be very violent if they catch you cheating
