Canvas Preview (Rundown)

hey everybody today righto previews a prototype of canvas but before I get going please turn your subtitles on to the Klingon channel so that when I make rules go to see what they are and if you've done that then welcome to our artists studio where we are gonna make beautiful works of art oil paintings I believe on our canvases and each player has three total canvases that they are gonna convert into beautiful works and we are gonna be judged on the quality of our works based on one two three four metrics and in this game it's gonna be space style movement and emphasis in this game how the judges do not care about unity or rhythm or repetition or variety or composition or symmetry or hierarchy or even proximity all of those are out it's all about emphasizing our stylish movement in space that's what our art is supposed to do and now each of us we have one canvas at the ready that we're ready to paint on to more laying in the wait and once a player has made all three of their works they are done hi and chances are the other players will be done very quickly as well and then we'll see who wins the art competition we also start with each of us for imagination tokens which receives these lovely little things that we use to pay to use our imagination to come up with what we're gonna paint and as part of set up in addition to these we shuffle this art deck up and drew five and we are ready to paint okay so I'm the first player and what do I do well on my turn I am either going to grab one of these cards from the main board and add it to my own little pool of imagination I guess or I can transfer exactly three no more no less of the cards I previously collected put them on my canvas and get rated on how well I went for space style movement and emphasis it's one or the other every turn so I think since I don't have three of pieces of art to put on my canvas I will go on ahead and grab a card and I think for starters I'll just get this lonely lighthouse this guide as you can see folks these are transparent arge and what we're gonna be doing when I put three over here they are going to be layered on top of each other to create an ultimate work of art a lighthouse on the lookout for teacups entitled fragile guide for example and as you may have noticed there are icons down here at the bottom and when they go on they give me the opportunity to score based on how we're rated so I've already taken this but why this one well it may or may not be ideal for space style movement or emphasis but the first slot this is easy it requires no imagination to come up with this lighthouse image in my head if I wanted this complexity icon because it's really perfect where I'm trying to do well I'd have to spend to imagination which would go here and here I would take this these would slide over and now if somebody does fragile or guide in the future they get some imagination back so think small worlds or offer ends up okay which is why I'm just gonna go ahead and start out and just get a quick and easy one and we'll see how well it goes that was my turn it is now gents turn everything slides over a new thing comes out Oh something is imminent as you can see now let you decide artistically what that might represent what is imminent so Jen is now gonna take one and again she could take the one for free or she could pay a little bit to get one of the other ones and so just gonna spend a little more time thinking so style means that once you put three of your art cards on here down here in the icons there have to be at least three of these Suns they don't have to be next to each other just have to be three of them there's no Sun here there's no Sun here beloved is the first one that could get you towards style movement needs you to have three icons that look the same either the triangle the Sun the square or the color icon next directly next to each other which can be tricky so um right so yeah that's gonna be something to think about emphasis says hey only use one of these color icons so fragile if fret you know fragile went on Jen's canvas and it was the only one of this icon she would have made emphasis on a specific color the yellow color apparently so that's a possibility and the space you have to have a pair a colored circle and a triangle although you could do this multiple times but they can't be next to each other so like if so this unfortunately it's what she needs the circle a triangle but there's no space between them so she would not score a ribbon for that but um you know if later on she got this one then there is at least one space between this circle and this triangle and she would get a green ribbon as an example so that is what she's thinking about as she tries to decide which card draft and does she want to pay I think she will just go for free right now we'll see how we'll see how this plays out all right slide on over and now that I've got something to build on the question is do I just go for another free or do I start trying to target things they beloved like I said this is the first one that actually could get me towards style here's beloved here's oh and look at this graceful is awesome because it's got two Sun symbols graceful plus beloved combined gives you three Sun symbols so it's stylish and they're right next to each other so it's movement as well oh my gosh yes I am definitely gonna pay one to skip complexity to get beloved and I'm hoping I can snag graceful because if so I will have gotten I'll get two ribbons a blue and a purple ribbon nice okay so that was that it is now Jen's turn and Jen well I don't know if complexity is the right move for her but if she does she gets some imagination that she can use on a later turn to grab whatever she wants hmm if she were to take this what good would it do her how would it combine with this and by the way folks oh hi Jenna I found you end up doing a lot of this I do this for this day y'all I mean there's a lot I know this seems like a really simple game but that is deceptive it is really deep so again Jen's created a pair but she's nowhere close there's no sons and no three things in a row there's another a nice thing is by the way you can just tell hey here's another triangle obey his blue it'll cover up this or be covered up by this you can just you don't necessarily have to lay them out to see what's gonna happen hmmm alright does Jen want wait was it just no I think she had fragile or did she have complexity I don't member she's chose whatever was cheap we'll say that's what it was and I just skipped over it so if I miss it up folks that's why we watch the thing on subtitles turned on okay so what does Jen want no no she did have this one right because she had a color yeah there we go so does she take the complexity which may or may not work but yo you can be collecting multiples of these to go for different stuff and by the way also just knows you can see there's a lamp or a head because of the reflectiveness of this game oopsie uh Sammy hmm alright if Jen goes for that oh I was gonna say you can collect up to five of these you don't have to put the first three of these you collect directly on your canvas you can have up to five once you have five though you must make a canvas because you're not allowed to take a sixth this is interesting too this peaceful is really nice because there's two colors right next to each other and this surrender has a third color in green so these two combined would create movement three colors in a row but they would totally fail at emphasis where you're only supposed to have one color yeah I think Jenny is gonna pay one skip the complexity and go for this all right things slide over and I'm yes perfect I will definitely play the last of my imagination to get this bit of gracefulness and only then does Jen see what I've managed to do if I've done this correctly yes I've completed style and movement with this graceful guide sorry about the green screen there okay so there we go as my turn Jen's turn and all right what is Jen going for I've totally forgotten I was so focused on my own thing right if she gets okay mmm boy oh boy oh boy yeah I think Jen's gonna pay big she will skip complexity and eminence and go right to peacefulness just because well emphasis is the least valuable trait we could go after if at the end of the game I have earned one emphasis trophy that's one point if I've earned two emphases trophies I've done it on two of my three campuses it's four if I do it on all three it's eight compared to movement which is four eight or thirteen if I do it one two or three times so I think Jen cares more about trying to snag that movement because with two she now has movement and she could still maybe go for style but she'd have to get to style over here and that'd be pretty tough to do um but if she gets another triangle over here she would have movement and she would have space because if she gets a triangle over here it could be there could be space between them so and in fact she does have a triangle but that doesn't give her the movement does it no it doesn't this gives her the space this gives her the movement alright so that was it for Jen more stuff slides over and you know what folks ice can't turn down I'm getting a huge burst of imagination by going for complexity okay and that's Jen's turn she has two more of these she could spend to skip and wasn't I just saying was I just saying she would like another triangle over here oh but here's something to bear in mind this is interesting this extreme has another icon if this is if this is not covered up in her final canvas she will get well in my prototype it says she will get one point for every colored icon but they've actually done some tweaking and bouncing adjustments so it's actually two points so she will get two points for this which would be really great because she's already thinking about this but this would cover up ah so okay so yeah maybe it doesn't necessarily work she wants to get triangle over here and then she could do that with this eminence yeah she's just gonna get some of her inspiration back and I'm thinking she's thinking that this is probably how did I do that this this oh wait huh oh this one yeah they are there and I see so we have to go like this and a peaceful surrender gives her space and it gives her movement so I think that's what Jenna is thinking about and then we slide on over back to me now how many do I have here I've got four I can take one more card before I am required to make my first canvas and I've already feel so focused on Jen right okay so I had this in this I'm totally doing this to get the movement and the style and this is interesting this is two points per color if I could put another color in this spot then that would score twice but that means I would need a color in a perp and no not in a purple in a blue and there is one right there if I could get this and slip it in like this oh my gosh well this would be one first so I get 3 / 6 points:4 that I do man ohh but if I do that then I mean right now I've only I do have emphasis by only having one color yeah you know what I think I'm happy with this I could go on ahead and grab another but I'm just gonna chill for a little bit I'm gonna make my first piece of art right now I'm gonna make a V I'm gonna call it graceful complexity although this is only 2 points but it's okay it's okay okay so um I could take another one and then I'd be full I'm gonna go early I'm gonna make my first work of art I've done exactly three this is a layout and here's your same thing folks um as you see I've got some reflection problems you're getting to see because of the angle my my ceiling here this game all of your canvas cards are actually sleeved and so when you make a work of art you're supposed to take the canvas and slide everything in so you have made a solid finalized work of art just like that and then it's all yo nice and easy and transportable but I left my sleeves off because I'm already creating enough glare I didn't want to create more but that is my final work of art graceful complexity okay so let's grate it now I have three sons that means it is stylish I have three of the same icon in a row that means there is movement I have one an only one bit of color that means there is emphasis and I have a pair of oh no I don't color I do not have space because my color is next my triangle I almost had the full gamut I had all three but still I'm pretty happy with this plus two points for that that was my first work I'm gonna start working on my second but that was my whole turn nice okay it is now Jen's turn and again this is hard to keep both of these in head in my head what I'm trying to do alright yeah Jen likes this because it was these two it was this yeah this was interesting and this would be three so she's got movement she's got space but she but she doesn't have emphasis and she does not have style she does have a lot of imagination she has four cards she could take one more is there one that is worth taking she can't get to this one but she could get to this one which would give her another colorway over here which doesn't really help it would get her a second but she needs two suns if she could get harmonious and reach no no no the they're both on green so you'd only be able to see one of these Suns right and it beep now okay okay well here's the deal if Jen is ultimately planning on making a work of art called peaceful surrender she doesn't have to do it right now she can keep that aside and start collecting for this because what does this want well combined with extreme gets her two triangles a third triangle gets her movement although there is no third there's no green triangle coming but one might show up you never know uh let's see here man is she gonna go like this or does she jettison trying to get the three no no but kept me she's got to make something pretty soon I think she's pretty happy with that so she's thinking ahead the triangle Plus this doesn't cost anything yeah okay she'll take it and if she hit a third triangle hey she'll have movement if she doesn't she's getting two points per color and there are some color ones out there so that was Jen's turn sliding on over and my turn well I'm starting all over from scratch because I've already done my first work of art and what do I want hmm I would like a purple triangle or a blue square with color oh that's nice is that square in that square although but no here's the problem I can't cuz that square covers up this square or that square it covers up this square ah these two won't work together drat hmm I don't think I'm gonna get yeah yeah oh yeah all right and are there any triangles I could work on trying to get in another bit of movement because now that I've done one movement I definitely want to do another to go from four points to eight points I gotta take something or maybe I'll just pay one and try to start collecting more Suns because of the style alright so that was it for me sliding on over and oh master look oh my gosh two triangles in a Oh Jen what's that oh but Jen could get it alright so Jen she asked five she must make a work she's gonna do her first work she calls it peaceful surrender and now let's uh see how well it rates again you put it in your sleeve so you can try you can hand it to all your teammates and see oh there's a meteor stole her man there's a cannon shooting confetti at the beautiful butterfly Oh what does it mean peaceful surrender alright so Jen has movement three of the same thing jen has space and nothing else so that was her first work alrighty but Jen definitely wants to get that mask because it'll work with fragile and she'll have movement with three triangles nice okay but before we get to that it's my turn I couldn't make it work even if I wanted to and I want to get more suns and there are no suns for going for style so what are the chances I'm gonna get another one but hey here's a color that's two colors forget about emphasis and instead go for movement yeah I'll do it I'll take that because these could work like that and forget about a single Sun does any good so I might cover it with Oh oh I need a I need a green color and not one well we'll see how it works out slide none over and it's Jens turn and jen is gonna pay big boom boom boom she got the masked oh yeah look at that she has nailed her movement and she gets that color over here she can have her second emphasis which will take her from 1 to 4 points she is very very happy about that for her next canvas ok ok and I was like oh why do I never have that I could have gotten that I didn't even see it ok so back to me what was I trying to do oh I was trying to get know ok so there's still no green rainbows here so I can't go for that movement necessarily mm what to do what to do oh boy uh-huh all right there's no sir so this is 2 points per Sun a blue rainbow which could go with my purple rainbow and then again so either way I need a green rainbow where are the green rainbows oh but it's also it's a blue square so a purple square blues where if there's a green square no green squares all the green Suns what is up with that this is proving challenging and I'm all can pick up two more before I'm gonna have to make my second work so I'm really feeling the pressure I got to choose wisely and sometimes you just gotta make do with what you got I mean hey yo if I got this maybe I just and if I go like this if I can get one more triangle here or here then this would be a pair and this would be a pair and I would get to space ribbons is there a triangle like that no yes there is but it's literally risky oh okay so I want that risky and I can't have it 1 2 3 4 so I can't have it so I just got to get something else and then get risky on the next turn so I can go for 2 space which would be 4 points for those ribbons okay so I'm putting this aside which means I'm now I'm thinking about what am I gonna do with this hey I would like to get this blue Sun to go with my green but if I spend all my imagination on that I can't get there risky so no I need to get one of these and just start collecting ideally this one what I think I think I think I will but if I kick this then this is I've already got one Sun so that's two points there if I go for this one and I could potentially get forbidden no but and that would cover so that would be four points and then another green where are the other color Suns I'm just gonna take dreams just cuz it's the cheapest and in fact I earn back all right so that was that sliding on over and the one thing I know I was safe I get cuz Jen she only has one imagination left right so Jen's got her movement and I forgot what else is she trying to do oh she wants to get she wants to get some color so oh she could do it either way so this two points for Sun which what she wouldn't have any or this one she either way so she'll take this one cuz it's cheaper and that's what she's thinking uh-huh so she getting nothing for that but she's got movement and she's got space alright so that's not bad coming on over and I'm like yes risky paid off one too risky hey that was my fifth so next turn I have to build which I think that's gonna go there if I recall correctly I don't remember I remember I really wanted that risky card alrighty and then Jen said okay she can get one more is there something better she can do than this again big mercy and only put three down so now I think she'll take this just to get a lot more to give her flexibility later alright so that was her fifth so next turn she has to make her second canvas and I think I have to make my second gameis right now yes and folks my canvas my work here is all about risky desire and as you can see uh-huh it is all about eating dice while the lighthouse is on the lookout all right that is the definition of risky desire and what did I get for this all righty I've got a pair and a pair so that is to space ribbons I get two points per square so that is gonna be two points I get at the end of the game I have two colors so I don't get any emphasis and so I don't get any style or movement because I did not get three suns but still I mean heck that was four points for these two ribbons and it means I could jump up seven so and I did get two points for that so my second work is done I'm gonna start working on my third canvas and then meanwhile its Jen she's got to make one as well and I think it's gonna be about masked movement okay so ahaha righty she has movement three of the same icon in mass movement she gets two points per Sun she doesn't have any she has one space so she got two medals not bad but not great okay and she is starting on her last canvas as well and so am i but you know what folks I think I'm gonna stop right there cuz I should give you a pretty good idea of how canvas plays out and now it's time for final thoughts but before I get to that folks please remember this was a paid Kickstarter preview so you should take any subjective opinions I've got with grain of salt and with that out of the way I'll tell you my subjective opinions are this is excellent this just combines so many things that I love I have always been a huge fan of the drafting method where you pay to skip over stuff and thereby make the things that were skipped more attractive for future drafting I oh I first time I ever saw it was in small world I'm and it's been around a long time and it works wonderfully here and even well as a two-player game which it isn't always quite so interesting there but here because there's such a finite number of I mean it's not at all out of the realm of possibility the one player might just completely dominate the market and have all of them and then you just bleed your opponent dry and that combined with the fact that you have such ace all hand size your hand will fill up very very quickly and you're like I just need one more or I just need one more imagination so I can get the one that be perfect but it just never quite seems to work out and so you just gotta make the best work of art you can with the constraints you're in while trying to hit the variety and every time you play you are gonna get a big amount of variety for what types of objectives you're chasing after and it is excellent I love the variability from the setup I love the pieces of art we end up creating and I love the fact that it borrows the idea from mystic veil where ultimately your piece of art goes in this sleeve so it does feel like a real thing um which is absolutely excellent - they didn't have to do that and to be fair if you don't like that idea you could just leave these sleeves in the box because all you gotta do is just stack them on top but there is just something really satisfying about slotting in and showing off your work graceful complexity there um but more importantly getting all your ribbons to score the scoring system is really nice as well because you know this idea you would think it's always great to go broad and complete a given work that has you know three or even all four metals on it but that's not necessarily so great compared to focusing like a laser on just a couple because the LOD scores double if you specialize rather than diversify but then on top of that there are the bonuses to be had for these little ribbons that are on here because I mean you could say attack with all these I'm just gonna try and get as many of these and turn this into a six or an eight point card and that more than makes up for the fact I didn't go all those so there's a fair amount of variety and yeah my wife and I have really liked it my only complaint about this is having played this with my wife now is oh my gosh can this be analysis paralysis prone you gotta know that going in because you know they all trying to figure out which is the best one does lead to a lot of okay with this Plus this and this over here and okay I'm even want to show you I'm looking at that one cuz that's the one I want cuz it'll work out perfectly like say the developers do a pretty good job of helping minimize it because you strictly speaking don't have to put them because I can see that well okay I can see I need a blue or a yellow to fill these spaces in I can just locate oh yeah there's a yellow over there fine I don't have to put it there so I do think the you know the visual element does really help minimize that but even still playing with my wife I found she was very thoughtful uh although you're wrong she was loving every second of it you know just trying to puzzle out the absolute peak efficiency way to do it and when I talked to the developer they said oh my god we've never heard of anybody who's been able to play this game as well as your wife so she loved it and it's like said I'm getting back to my only complaint it meant that well I might take my phone out of my pocket every once in a while while waiting for Jim cuz I've already decided what my next is the other interesting thing too I've only plays a two-player game I guess there would be arguably a little bit of an issue playing at higher player counts because there's only five out here and if you're playing is a four player game well after your turn is over four of the five you're seeing are likely not going to be there when your next turn comes around so it doesn't really behoove you to spend a lot of time when it's not your turn thinking about what you might do because you cannot necessarily anticipate um what it is I mean you can still look at them all but I mean it's just constant change you sue the players a new one comes out an old one is gone um I mean I guess because you know oh look I've only got these two I could only get any of these three so I just have to look at them and OOP that one disappeared and a new one came in so you can do some planning but that you can't really again it this comes back to the same issue if you or someone you love is prone to analysis paralysis this game will give it to you and it's just something you gotta know going in now my wife is definitely prone to that I mean I would certainly feel a little bit while I was filming but it doesn't change the fact that it is a good crunch it is a healthy delicious crunch just trying to work out more um you'll all these things all these decisions that have to go into what ultimately results in making a lovely or three lovely pieces of art in canvas and that is the preview folks uh thanks so much for watching have a very
