yesterday the Canadian House of Commons passed an anti Islamophobia motion called m103 this is the text of the motion in full that in the opinion of the house the government should a recognized the need to quell the increasing public climate of hate and fear be condemned Islamophobia and all forms of systemic racism and religious discrimination and take note of the House of Commons petition efore 1:1 and the issues raised by it and see request that the Standing Committee on Canadian Heritage undertake a study on how the government could one develop a whole-of-government approach to reducing or eliminating systemic racism and religious discrimination including Islamophobia in Canada while ensuring a community centered focus with a holistic response through evidence-based policymaking to collect data to contextualize hate crime reports and conduct needs assessments for impacted communities and that the committee should present its findings and recommendations to the house no later than 240 calendar days from the adoption of this motion provided that in its report the committee should make recommendations that the government may use to better reflect the enshrined rights and freedoms in the Constitution acts including the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms the motion was tabled by liberal backbencher ikura khalid all NDP and nearly all Liberal MPs supportive motion which passed with 201-409-1811 Barry Conservative MP Alex Nuttall and both abstained the votes follows months of bitter debate in a series of protests and counter protests across the country over whether the private member's motion would limit free speech or single out Islam for special treatment in Canadian law this article streamlines calles motion down to these three points condemned Islamophobia and all forms of systemic racism and religious discrimination quell the increasing public climates of hate and fear and compel the Commons Heritage Committee to develop a government-wide approach for reducing or eliminating systemic racism and religious discrimination including Islamophobia the latter would require the Heritage Committee to collect data on hate crime reports conduct needs assessments for affected communities and present findings within eight months the wording of this bill has been contentious and Liberal MPs rejected an attempt by Conservative MP to remove the word Islamophobia from the motion and change the wording to condemn all forms of systemic racism religious intolerance and discrimination of Muslims Jews Christians Sikhs Hindus and other religious communities and therein lies the rub Anderson argued that Islamophobia was not defined in coloreds motion and that its inclusion contributed to widespread confusion and fears about the effect on freedom of speech it was a really collaborative effort amongst all Canadians and amongst all parliamentarians and I was not able to find consensus Khaled said really changing the wording of the motion would have watered it down and I think the committee can really look into this if it's an issue it's important to note that this is not a law or bill and is in fact a non-binding motion it's more a way of getting the houses of parliament to agree on a course of action so let's talk about this my first point of contention is why anyone would think they need to do this that's all this has obviously been raised in response to the Quebec mosque shootings but I find it highly unlikely that anyone will suggest that this will prevent any further shootings the increasing public climate of hate and fear surrounding Islam is not coincidental it is a direct result of Islamic attacks against the West and I'm not going to waste my time with discussions such as it's not all Muslims all these weren't real Muslims or they don't represent the majority the people committing terrorist attacks in the name of Islam are Muslims yes I know they do not represent any Muslims let alone all Muslims and yes I am fully aware that it is not every single Muslim who is doing this I find it bizarre that the Canadian Parliament needs a motion to condemn Islamophobia and all forms of systemic racism and religious discrimination what systemic racism and religious discrimination is enshrined in the legal system and institutions of Canada Canada is famous for their tolerance diversity and Pro multiculturalism attitude I highly doubt anyone would even suspect the Canadian government of any form of racism systemic or otherwise religious discrimination systemic or otherwise or the dreaded Islamophobia again systemic or otherwise that is a pointless thing to have at the beginning of this given how not racist Canada is you have to wonder why anyone would even begin a motion asking them to condemn it the most interesting parts of point a is the fact that they refuse to remove the word Islamophobia there is simply no need to privilege Islam in such a way there is nothing wrong with the wording of condemn all forms of systemic racism religious intolerance and discrimination of Muslims Jews Christians Sikhs Hindus and other religious communities at all that completely encapsulates the spirit of what you are trying to say in far more precise language because as many other people have noted Khalid and other supporters of this bill refused to define Islamophobia the neologism Islamophobia is a very interesting word for a few reasons proponents of this word seem unsure whether it refers to people who practice Islam the Muslims or the metaphysical concept of Islam which is the religion even if you choose to define it as meaning both then it is rendered unfit for purpose because in the West we do not protect groups we do not protect ideas we protect India Jules and this bill and the use of the term Islamophobia would be through subtle linguistic sleight of hand a group and an idea would be given distinct recognition and protection of its own the proposed rewording of this motion would actually circumvent that by giving equal consideration to all forms of religious expression and if you'll allow me to conjecture for just a second I think that's why it was rejected because the term Islamophobia has been heavily co-opted by the far left and incorporated into the package ideology of intersectional social justice but more importantly it's a linguistic weapon that has no other rivals in the West because Islamophobia is bigotry against of religion and in English we don't have any other terms like that even the term anti-semitism refers specifically to Jewish people rather than the Jewish religion but conversely Islam itself does contain a whole package of terms that refer specifically to discrimination against other religions you might well be a kaffir or a non-believer someone who's rejected Islam you might be living under a caliph which is a spiritual leader of Islam which means that you would be a Dimi a non-muslim resident in a caliphate and you would have to pay a Jeezy ur a religious tax on non-muslims so that they may retain their original religions because Islam dichotomize 'as the world along religious lines and it distinguishes between not only Muslims and pagans but also between Muslims and people of previous Abrahamic faiths or to be given some form of protected status this is difficult for the english-speaking world to understand because we do not even have a word to describe religious discrimination and bigotry we do not have unique words to describe a fear of Christians or Buddhists or pagans or ten greatest sword hours or any other religion but we do have one against Islam in the West we should treat all religions without distinction this motion does not do this and gives express priority to Islam above other religions by marking it out as distinct from the rest I find it very interesting that within Islam is a totalitarian ideology that seeks to control and regulate every aspect of a person's life from the cradle to the grave your entire life can be controlled by the ideology of Islam under Sharia law and in dozens of Muslim countries this is precisely what happens and that brings us to Point C the request that the Standing Committee on Canadian Heritage undertake a study on how the government could develop a whole-of-government approach to reducing or eliminating systemic racism and religious discrimination including Islamophobia while ensuring a community centered focus with a holistic response through evidence-based policymaking again there is no reason to distinguish Islam from other religions in this case unless you are specifically attempting to privilege Islam above the others which they clearly are but more importantly I find it interesting that they're trying to create a mandate to eliminate or reduce systemic racism and religious discrimination is that not something that the Canadian government already does through mission of action by instilling liberal principles in their citizenry and maintaining their systems of government as free democratic and secular but what bothers me the most and this is coming from my position as a liberal is the fact that all of this should be done under the rubric of personal freedom the individual freedoms of practitioners of these religions who should I agree be free from systemic racism and religious discrimination aren't even mentioned in this motion save for in the name of the Charter of Rights and Freedoms my problem with this is the elevation of the concept of reducing or eliminating systemic racism and religious discrimination without concern for the people that are being affected by such a thing if you can find any at all that are basically my worry is that this will create a witch-hunt mentality among a group of people who let's face it are prone to anti racism witch hunts and who see white supremacy fascism and racism everywhere they go while I appreciate that the Canadian conservatives will at least demand the definition for Islamophobia they should also demand a definition for racism because it is probably not the same as the one that they hold in their minds also the inclusion of eliminating systemic racism gives the people who table the motion an infinite mandate to continue indefinitely with this at what point do you think that these people will ever say that systemic racism has been eliminated and this is to overlook the fact that if systemic racism can be eliminated it probably already has been in Canada I find it highly unlikely that Canadian lawmakers have on their books any kind of racial or religious discrimination in law I imagine that they have thousands of pages of anti-discrimination laws but I can't imagine that they have any Pro discrimination laws so it will not be systemic racism that is the problem it will be individual racism within these systems and I am also sure that there will be many many laws to deal with anyone who is caught being overtly racist in their jobs again I must point out that this is going to become a witch-hunt as it already is in the minds of these people for fascists and Nazis racists are just another brand of bad person that they must root out and eradicate at all costs and I only know this through long dealing with these people you cannot trust them to set their own limits and abide by them but these are merely my personal concerns and criticisms they are not reflective of the general public we know what the general public thinks of this thanks to a poll that we have done on this very subject Canadians doubt that the anti Islamophobia motion will have any effect even if they support it and if you remember a parliament how would you vote on this motion with only 29 percent voting in favor with 42 percent voting against and another 29 percent abstaining this does not have popular support and half of all Canadians don't even agree that the government needs to condemn Islamophobia presumably because such bigotry is implicit in the laws of Canada already and their own intellectual traditions there is however a great deal of concern that this will impact free speech 31 percent believe that it should not be passed it is a threat to Canadians freedom of speech 26 percent think that it's not worth passing because it won't do anything and it's a waste of time 31 percent think it's worth passing for symbolic reasons alone but won't have any real impact and only 12 percent think that it's worth passing and will help reduce anti-muslim attitudes and discriminations this motion does not have widespread support and if I were to take the time to look into the individuals who have passed this then I am sure that I would find a history of extreme regressive opinions from their Twitter feeds and social media and various other initiatives they have championed this appears to me to be a power grab it seems to be a way of trying to cajole and force other people dissenters to do as a small cabal of people wants but more importantly what is the end goal here what is the purpose of this do they expect to criminalize fear of Islam that don't think that's going to work do they think that they can legislate this problem out of existence of course not do they think that changing the focus of Parliament's intentions and actions into harassing hounding and hectoring their own population into accepting limbs is going to make them more accepting of Muslims and do they think that placing special focus on Islam and Muslims is going to make people think better or worse of them this is a motion that is probably not needed is not going to do anything productive and is going to engender more resentment both towards the regressive left and the Muslim minority in Canada [Music] [Music]
