can you use the brand new apple silicon mac mini as your only video editing computer let's find out i got nothing it's all i had to slam what's up everyone i'm the everday dead and if i can figure it out you can figure it out apple has promised that their new m1 chip is a vast jump in performance over their previous computers that have had intel based chips in them and before we get started i would like to thank apple for loaning me this mac mini i did personally purchase one and it should be here any day and i cannot wait for it to come in because this this is actually the mac that i'm now most excited about the mac mini is currently the cheapest computer that you can get that has mac os on it so let's find out if we could use this as our only video editing computer now the one thing that i want to make clear at the beginning of this video is i was going to have my screen recorder capturing everything through the mac mini but the screen recorder i don't know it's decided that it hasn't wanted to work in like my last three or four videos so we're going to do the internal screen capture so just imagine that whatever we get today it will be even better for you because you won't be screen recording the program we're going to use today is apple's own final cut pro it's not called final cut pro x anymore with big sur you see they took out the x there is no it's just final cut pro fcp now we do already have some footage that we've imported we're just going to cut it up see how it works and if this is as powerful as apple says it is so the big the big chunk that we've got today is we're going to take the what i call the a roller the talking head footage from the you should buy the ipad air video and we'll take that and we'll just drop it and then we'll see we'll export it we'll see how everything goes the mac mini has been incredibly snappy i've been very impressed thus far with like general usage stuff so you just saw we imported all of the b-roll and it went really quickly okay so that you guys could see everything let's make this a little bit bigger so we'll do our very first there's that look at that handsome guy look at that handsome guy right there so let's actually let's add our one of the things that i do like about final cut pro is you can save all your presets we've instead of having to go and color grade each time boom we hit it with our preset our lumix s5 preset because that's what we're shooting on and we are that's good to go audio let's crank this up just a little bit the mac mini also has its own speakers so let's turn this up so that you can hear what's going on it's that the volume is not as important but you know you want to be able to hear because the thing i got to get a different monitor when you do these videos because this monitor counts as a speaker but it doesn't have any speakers so we'll figure that out in the future so the brand new this is 4k 10 bit footage it's not all i footage so it's not the big beefy stuff that's easy to edit this is the smaller code because the s5 does not have that bigger codec and so this is actually a little bit harder to edit and what i've seen i don't i also have here so that you can see that we're not trying to cheese it or cheat at all i have background render turned off so one of the ways that you can make this even easier on yourself is you can turn on background render which generates optimized media while you just stop when you stop final cut pro in the background will generate media that's even easier for it to edit we haven't done that here this is just straight up out of camera um there's no there's no slowdowns here and check this out this is not in better performance this is in better quality this is the actual 4k you're seeing it's not optimized media look at this there's not a normal slowdown when we have computers on here that have problems with video editing or at least the playback it'll take a few seconds for it to get going it'll it'll go from like one frame to five frames to 30 frames a second and here it's just yes look at that is impressive that is it i haven't seen a slow down yet okay so when it comes to just straight up playback this is all right apple okay so let's actually get into the video editing so let's round let's expand you a little bit let's go back over here close so the brand new generation four of the apple ipad air the brand you always mess up look i mess up all the time when it comes to uh stuff like that so don't don't judge okay there we go the brand new generation 4 of the apple ipad air released a little over a week ago and in that time i've used this as my primary productivity work slash creative coordination computer i still can't say that that many times fast i couldn't even make it twice so how has this held up so one of the things that i do like about final cut pro is you see this like the header that you move around with the mouse you just click and cut from that no other program lets you do that that wasn't too bad at all gary was genuine what's up so really quickly okay so so far as we're just cutting i'm not seeing a single problem there's no problem or slowdown with this like period we've also got we've got our color correction on here we do one thing we're going to need to correct going forward is it does look like this shot's just a little too wide so let's crop in a little bit when i say it's too wide that means this lip right here that's the edge of this table and i don't want the edge in the shot i want it to look more like that so now we've got the adjustment we've got the color grade we've got a little bit of audio processing i don't do as much audio processing when it comes to final cut pro but we have increased the decibels just a little bit so this is basically what i would do in a normal video so we've got the intro just about good this over the ipad pro let's do the ken burns because the ken burns is where the magic happens let's find out okay so let's add in our audio really quickly right about there we'll add our transition which is a push it doesn't go up and down what are you do final cut you're embarrassing me in front of my friends here you're embarrassing me in front of my friends here it's delayed a little bit right right what was that there was a weird thing right there what's up everyone i'm the everyday dad if i can figure it out you can figure it out and look there there you go we've been going for what a little over 10 minutes now we've got basically the intro of this video edited maybe let's add some b-roll because normally to the beginning of my videos i do like to have a shot of whatever i'm talking about so we can go back to video editing video let's get this right here turn that volume off we'll add another one right over here turn the magnetic timeline back on so we get that lined up properly turn it off okay now let's see a little over a week ago and in that time i've used this my slowdowns productivity work slash creative coordination computer that's impressive okay that's legit impressive no slowdowns 4k files b-roll color grade audio processing transitions i don't really ever do effects myself but and remember all of this is happening while we're still recording the background screen remember that so it's still using part of its processing power to record the screen okay so now we're at a five minute clip we'll stop the screen recording we'll get our timer and let's see let's see how long this will take to render so here we go five minute clip we'll render it we'll export it in 4k settings 4k we'll do fa i do faster encode anyway so here we go next we'll call this yeah video editing ready get set go okay let's check this out here's our percentage one percent two percent mass moving three percent it's moving pretty fast dang um okay so six percent okay so what we'll do i'm not going to make you sit here the whole time we'll pause while i sit here and wait for this to render and i'll see you in a second and while this is rendering you can see we're still not even halfway something i want to point out is listen we're in a very quiet studio and i can barely hear the fan like my head has to be right next to the computer to hear the fan this thing is dead silent look at this we're using 12 maybe 13 of the cpu to do this and look at how fast that's going we're halfway done we're not even to two minutes yet so we're going almost double real time for rendering holy cow okay we'll wait until we'll wait to see the official time i'll see you back in a second okay i want to make sure we actually catch it so we're at 92 93 let's get ready to stop 94 95 and done three minutes and seven seconds for the five minute clip so we did end up slowing down a bit it's not double real time but it's almost double real time and that's that is the fastest i have ever seen final cut pro render and we just did that on a 700 mini pc that doesn't have a dedicated graphics card what what did the fan we barely could even hear the fan this is this is wild this is three minutes look at this three minutes and seven seconds apple okay okay apple you got you've got my attention now apple that's legitimately impressive normally when i get that kind of speed it's on the ipad which we've been talking about for so long about how powerful that is but but but here's here's the real trick this was an h.264 and it's great we did it fast but editing it is not that impressive editing to h.264 people have been doing that for years here's where we're going to get a little bit trickier because normally this is the part of video where i'd be like yes of course you could use it as your only video editing machine but we're clearing the board clear the board check this out so that was h.264 see all of this footage right here all of this footage is in h.265 which is a high efficiency video codec out of the lumix s5 but this is terrible for normal computers it will generally cause them to grind to a halt let's see how the mac mini does let's just take this full one minute clip let's see if it'll play this is me and my son out hiking uh the other day so if you hear us talking in the background that's where it's that's where it's from so let's expand this a little bit i yeah look at that this video no ramping no slowdowns no anything and here's the proof that it's hevc check it out hevc high efficiency video codec no slowdowns it just it just works i haven't transcoded it i haven't done anything else this footage to pull the highlights down a little bit dang look at that okay here's another one here's another hevc clip playing back perfectly it plays back perfectly here's like a fake vlogging shot that's him playing with a stick man man you want to talk about impressive this is where this is impressive stuff and maybe you're not a video editor and you don't really care about this this is crazy i can't believe how easily this is playing back we still there's now look at all this stuff there's four 4k 10 bit high efficiency clips on here not a single slowdown and it cuts check this out cut cut cut delete delete delete cut cut cut delete look at how easy this is i never i'll never ever ever use h.265 footage because it's such a pain in the butt to use check this out here's the activity monitor see these little spikes that's all that here can we minimize this a little bit so you can see what i'm talking about here you can check this out let's see what the cpu does when we start playing back barely does eight percent it barely does eight percent of the cpu to play this stuff back on my windows pc and on my windows laptop when i tried to play back the hevc files from these computers it would it would shoot up to like 90 cpu everything would slow down and it just wouldn't work and this is totally smooth it's almost like using a transcoded file and it's not transcoded it's straight up h.265 let's go out let's get a five minutes worth of clips we're at four minutes right here let's add another one let's add this oop almost let's add this out to five minutes okay so five minutes so again this is five minutes of the toughest footage that this camera puts out and causes a lot of other computers to grind to a halt let's see how long this takes to export okay let's reset ready save go here we go how fast is it gonna go one two look at that it's still incredibly fast it's still incredibly fast and check out the cpu usage again we're at about 13 maybe we're at about 14. we're using a whole nother percent of the cpu to work on this footage and just in the time that i've made fun of it we're at 10 done already okay we'll skip to the end and i'll see you in a second okay we're back to 92 okay here we go 93 as soon as again the same thing as soon as it pops up we'll call it done and boom three minutes and nine seconds so practically the exact same time frame to render and export h.265 look at that that's i don't know what else to say i don't this is a 700 pc this is the cheap this is the base model apple's letting me borrow the base model to do all of this stuff so this isn't like some kind of hidden secret tricked out machine with all of the ram it's got eight gigabytes of unified memory 256 gigabytes of storage and it just crushed that like any like no computer i've ever seen before so to answer the question the video can you use the cheapest macbook mini as your only video editing computer not only can you it's not like this thing barely scraped the minimum saying oh yeah i guess it could be feasible if you're willing to accept this limitation of this limitation this is one of the best video editing computers i've ever used in my entire life and i've been doing a lot of video editing over the last four years this thing is this thing cost less than an ipad pro and it does the best it does the best now it will be a little bit slower if you use davinci resolve or premiere pro this is the final cut pro version that's optimized for m1 so as those other nles update 4m1 they should be just as fast as this too but if you use final cut pro this is it's a no-brainer this is a no-brainer i cannot wait for mine to show up because mine will be my new video editing machine and if you liked this video and you'd like to see what my initial impressions are of this after using it for basically a week you can find that by clicking right here click click click click click click click thanks for watching
