this is the quest for the best Chinese in the USA [Music] see milk when you think of England for instance when you think of you know typical British food what is the first thing that comes to mind porridge rations it's bleak grim soup kitchens barely fish and chips yeah I'd say I'd say I think if anyone if you asked anyone other than you so I mean fish and chips is probably the most iconic British dish you know and for China I'd say probably the most iconic at least what I would think is you know Peking Duck all right Beijing though yeah call in America right yeah it's called Peking Duck everywhere in the world is that yeah I mean we call it Peking Duck yeah we call it Peking Duck in South Africa it's called Peking Duck in the UK it's called Peking Duck in America's Peking Duck yeah and Peking actually is the old name for Beijing yeah that's correct yeah azar that was Google search away yeah we'll figure it out either way maybe you could tell everybody what Peking duck is well Peking duck actually it's wicked wicked old dish yeah there was a history of like Chinese people roasting ducks all the way back and like the Han Dynasty and stuff yeah what they would do is actually take take some air and then shoot it between the skin and the meat okay so that it would kind of the juices are allowed to kind of flow around it the ironic thing is you'd think that would make the meat more tender but the way that they serve Peking Duck in Beijing is they don't eat the meat I know actually that's one of the biggest disappointments you know for me anyway is that it's basically just skin right and with a little bit of fat attached to it sometimes we don't live in Beijing and we do have duck and it's actually it's kind of prepared in almost an identical way except that we right you know whenever you see a Cantonese tchodson teen or you know it's basically a Cantonese canceling place yeah you'll always see the the duck carcasses hanging in the window yeah in Beijing what they do is they they only take the skin usually inside and you basically wrap it in this little pancake little wheat pancake you get some hot poison sauce yeah I've got some scallions and sometimes you know every restaurant can be different obviously just put all kinds of stuff but it's like a little almost like a tiny little taco yeah it's really delicious actually it is you put you put some cucumbers and onions and you know they have those kind of different things you can add so it's actually very nice but you know we had Peking Duck in Beijing that time remember was out there and we had it and I'll be honest it wasn't the best Peking Duck it was pretty good it was good but I've actually had better in other parts of China writers of course you can get it everywhere in China you're a very famous dish right I'm just curious as to how the Peking Duck here in America tastes never had it in America before and I have to say the scary thing about Peking duck is it can be done really poorly yeah because it's such a labor-intensive dish it tends to be pretty pricey if you go to like any place it's not really expensive I have a feeling it's not very good I've had bad Beijing duck before okay it's not it's not great it can be soggy it's not crispy you know long story short we're in the outskirts of LA and beautiful snowy mountains beautiful day out today yes and we're gonna head to this place called Beijing tasty house where we're not only gonna get Beijing duck but Beijing food in general yeah I'm not super familiar with Beijing food other than the times that we've been to Beijing and tried it out it's not something I eat very often sure it'll be cool to compare yeah I'm very very curious to see what they have on offer and I really do like you know Peking Duck a lot so let's give it a try hopefully it lives up to you know the authenticity of the mainland [Music] welcome to Beijing pesky house woman libyan yippe punks have a to award a holiday turns out that rip a jungle caught way no yes reunion woman deviance with a total chin ue but if I'm clear in the coal bed I hope I didn't hire me yeah you don't really meet here is yuliana the don't release GRCC initial video debating hi young college I had a foundry beautiful you don't belong here you don't require Korea when the unnatural time the maloca yeah the home the Cardinals a cottage and the rhetorical triangle or even water mellow horizon where I work whether you sympathize Johan Street Jellico God would be a qualifier how this year darkness young sinner who proved our akhada show or maybe an official founder change already been told our cilantro dr. pay by we chairs right which is weird it's really weird one use it it's kind of interesting and also maybe you can explain what's on this place Matt over there this was a little bit weird usually when you go to like a diner something in America and maybe they have like Jim's towing repairs or a vacuum cleaner company this is porous conceptions where you can be compensated for donating your own eggs from your ovaries yeah $20,000 not a bad that's not bad dicing my car with that any of your own kid running around yeah not really yours anymore so look traditionally what we usually do with this is right this is the way this has been displayed yeah the Ducks kind of looking at its own flesh he's like offering itself to us that's nice anyway it's nice yeah they use your usual way you meet this is you take this pancake type thing over here let's go put some of that sauce which is usually plum sauce or something along those lines more voices this looks like poison looks very savory yeah and then you put some of the cucumbers you put some of the whatever sliced up onions or probably spring onions yeah looks like it and then you put some of the skin and that's usually what you do it's in this one like I said you're gonna have some meat with yours what you're gonna really appreciate it angle yeah because yeah there we go I mean it is it is skin I'm gonna put a little a little meat on - I wonder if they've done this just for the Western taste because yeah you can see this is actually just skin there's no no meat attached to the thing is speaking to spin one of the managers yeah he said that there's never any white people that come in here or Western yeah that's true you're actually right so yeah maybe it's not for Western taste see this is what I would say as a pancake not like IHOP okay like this kind of thin stuff right I think I hopes like flat we definitely didn't good I have a restaurant okay so put some of your babies on there yeah exactly like a Beijing duck pancake that I've had anywhere else that's good you know it's quite cool is um sometimes in the night markets they'll kind of wrap these mini you know just exactly like it makes it how many ones you get a whole but you don't have to do what I do it yourself yeah I like making it myself though yes kind of fun I like a lot of onions I might let's try it out do it on the bin of this pan cook mm-hmm a little chewy hmm and the skin isn't to skin like avian almost poultry it doesn't have that poultry flavor which is nice I have a feeling it has to do with a kind of birch news the sauce is super super strong I wouldn't use as much hmm like it don't go too liberal with listen onions are good cubes are good and I think they use these because the group duck is really greasy like even than me it's super greasy fatty meat this stuff kind of cuts through all that gives a little freshness to it otherwise of you thank you much I think other forces of our duck is alright yeah just yeah okay I'm gonna try please the skin I'm just gonna try the meat I can appreciate that yes good job that's better than what I had in Beijing yeah yeah also cheaper $80 that's because it's a tourist thing right so when you go to Beijing you've got these set up sort of Beijing Kai are famous restaurants and they're incredibly expensive you can sort of just go down the road and get it much cheaper if you know where to go you can but I like this better me too that's great so far this yeah how they just say I'm gonna agree with you I've seen pancakes like this but these are they take here yeah they taste very different to what we're used to it's almost like a pastry yeah yeah yeah I don't know about that so authenticity it's weird for me what would you give it because normal Beijing duck is carved on the side of the table yes and then also usually just give them meat and maybe they make a dish with other stuff later on you never really see that because this is put together with a meat almost in a more Cantonese style I would say and impaired with this kind of pastry like pancake I would say I would give the authenticity like a seven authentic compared to like trin Judah or one of the big kind of chains up in Beijing yeah yeah and for me the taste I would give a 8.5 it's really really really good I'm gonna go for like five okay although the taste of it is very authentic right right though the taste is really up there and about seven like you say for the taste right but as far as being tasty is concerned yeah I really like it it's great I've got six because you're not a skinny boy yeah it's not my ducks not my favorite meat either I like that they have an outfit boy though mm-hmm you know for people that don't like scanning a lot of people don't like spam you some people love it like me right very very good stuff can recommend this for sure now we got two other preparations of the duck which is cool they didn't waste the whole duck because we ordered a whole duck right now after then I'm puffing up the air into the skin and separating it from the meat what they do is actually the meats left over right so after they slice it all up in the in the kitchen back there which unfortunately we're not obviously yeah we couldn't see that sorry yeah sorry to interrupt you but that is a huge difference every time I've been for baiting charcoal picking a Leon right Pablo yeah they bring it out on like a tray of some carpet right there it's kind of part of the experience so I'm a little bummed that that wasn't part of this huh you know but you know when the other two dishes do two preparations here so obviously as soon and the super should we go without yeah I've never seen that before yeah this is interesting right it looks very variable yeah thank you looks like very rich it looks like it's full of tofu and some of the duck parts that's a duck parts it looks like a nice broth though a lot of times in soup with soups especially in Guangdong like down south you'll get you get really watery soups and this looks like it's got a nice base to it it does it does yeah that's very Chinese soup flavor is it it's not bad though it's quite salty mm-hmm I like that it's a little better in Cantonese soups and there is actually Solan yeah it's salty you can definitely taste the duck in there it's nice I mean I'm gonna say it's good it's really guilty actually I normally can't stand Chinese see if I call it oily water right yeah my wife hates me for that cos I live down south and we we live down south Cantonese soup is usually very watery with oil and bits of random stuff in it and it is it looks like oily water a taste like oily water this soup is really good one thing I can say is have a bite of that tofu and tell me what you think cuz I definitely not Chinese dough mmm it's very nice actually very very um very Japanese yeah it is a three Japanese but it's it's got a very sort of um how much rubbery texture you know I like to get it so yeah it's firm that's so tired that kind of mop what though who like that gelatinous kind of falls out of your slips right out you know sorry this is very good I like this suit back Sam a suit guy yeah me neither they using better duct using bit of tofu better water right better everything and it tastes etc it does it just better ingredients better cow yeah hmm absolutely Papa John's so yeah for the soup I would give this a eight out of 10 for authenticity because the tofu is definitely not what I get in China yeah it's very firm too but usually don't see that kind of super super complete like in the soup it's bizarre super nice sorry about that guys um in poor taste I would also give it an 8 do book I am so surprised by this suit yes authenticity it taste I've tasted the same sort of flavor the same medley of flavors in China because my wife being Cantonese is always trying to make me drink the Cantonese suit and I hate it I really just despise it I'm like I'm not drinking that only water I do taste it often and I can taste that in here but you know what this tastes good right you know don't you want to sneeze hi okay I give it an 8 or a 9 as well taste I'm actually going to give this one a 7 okay and for me not being a soup guide us that's the big thing we're eating a little pro tip you guys we go to China you have the word to consume soup was actually to drink soup right you actually just just said that I would actually say you can eat this super for a while it was actually stuffy in here yeah that was rare yeah yeah it did say drink soup didn't I thought about that no it's good yeah a little culturally I think our last dish way up here is they've actually deep-fried all the bones very Beijing style here with some chilies and I guess you're supposed to gnaw around them see a duck neck here we are you're no stranger to know I mean spicy duck neck it's everywhere I'm not a huge fan right but it's there it's a street snack we got the bottom of a leg I'm just trying to see what you get in this dish I got a random piece of something here you know what it smells like human yes yes yes it's weird it's like you'd expect that's not from the lamb right right right for this stuff Christ try it out for a good dog mmm his bizarre in flavor of nitrous I've never had duck prepared like that before you know it's nice they actually prefer that they should do all the stuck like that for sure take that meat and fry it up like that mmm although you do lose a bit of the crisp penis when you pan fry her when you start fire it down I don't care I should do it but it's good I usually don't like cumin that's well done it's not overpowering got half a mind to tell the chef to take all of this back to the kitchen and fry it up like that no no just cuz it's so good that is really yes that's I mean I don't like the idea of eating bones because it's really annoying as I say in China is a mouth on right which means irritating but this tastes so good to meet the meat on the bone steaks come easy that's great I'm surprised so yeah I mean authenticity I don't even know if I can give it an authenticity rating I've never seen this cool right I mean I've seen lamb prepared like this right first time I've seen ductile plate like this I think it's great it's a little spicy it's got some some bean sprouts in there it's got the cumin yeah it's a different way to do it now one thing I love about this restaurant I gotta say is that they haven't wasted any bit of the duck every single piece of duck is on the table right now so they're not like stashing the meat in the back or later like we probably saw Beijing yes yes yes there's we saw that and yeah I'm just loving the food man that's a really good stuff I'm actually gonna go in for another pancake while we wrap this up you know what I mean yeah absolutely anyway this this bone dish we got to give it a score right yeah so authenticity because I've never seen it before I can't really give it a later although the flavors I've had in China bitch I just know man until like a dish that you would yeah okay then it's typically a seminar okay get the flavor wise and giving it a nine it's just so good I'm gonna go for an eight on authenticity because I've had a lot of stuff it tastes like that yeah my go for seven on the taste for me just because I'm not a huge fan of cumin but they didn't overdo it and I'm happy about it it's like you know just taste like Chinese barbecue it really you know just white like you are on the side of the road yeah yeah it's really clip but yeah huge recommend for this I mean I can say that I was a little bit worried that this is gonna be completely inauthentic but everyone around in this restaurant is Chinese they told us that we are the only way which I find kind of weird but you don't you don't need a feel intimidate intimidated though if you are in the area because the manager speaks English they do have English on the menus and okay yeah I'd like to reiterate you want real Atlantic Beijing duck this is probably about as good as you're gonna get in fact I'm gonna say it's better than the Beijing duck we've had in Beijing I'm it's almost it's almost a little too weird what's happening to us yeah is that we keep consistently finding that some of this food is more authentic or more delicious than what we've had in China yeah which I find a little bizarre I'm trying to get very bizarre but it's not a bad thing I know the thing is I don't think it's just our Western palates I'm pretty sure the Chinese people would have realized this it's really good and you've got Chinese people around us eating it and if it wasn't good there wouldn't be no I mean talk about discriminating taste people are incredibly picky with their Chinese food that makes any sense well I must say it's pretty awesome to know you can get like proper Beijing food here in LA I'm kind of surprised for sure we've now tried China's most iconic dish in America that's true yeah it's also you can get it here yeah I know you're not a big fan of avian skin no but you can appreciate the dish yeah I tell you you know whenever I got with a show even with you guys I can I get chicken or anything I'm always like taking the skin off and giving it to other people because I can't handle it yeah I usually eat others yeah and that note yeah next time on quest for the best Chinese in the USA we head all the way up the west coast the Newport Beach to meet the famous winged lamb and his father winged lambs father is said to be one of the original people to bring Chinese food to America
