[Music] behind me is the new toyota camry now available with all-wheel drive in this video we are going to put that all-wheel drive system to the test to see if it's any good [Music] in order to test this new toyota what we're going to do is we're going to put it through the tfl roller test and during this test we're going to get various wheels stuck on purpose in these rollers and then let the all-wheel drive and the traction control try to figure out a way to get the car unstuck using the wheels that are still on the ground [Music] this first test is a test we call the front wheel slip test so basically both front wheels are going to be stuck in these rollers both the left and the right and the rear wheels are going to be on the solid ground so these rear wheels are going to have to engage to push us off now for all these tests i'm going to leave the vehicle in normal mode here i'm not going to engage eco or sport and traction control is going to remain on if possible because i want to simulate just normal driving conditions so backing on to the front wheel slip test now the aim for this test is to simulate how this vehicle will do in low traction situations so snow ice maybe a little bit of mud maybe a little bit of sand on the road let's see if the audio drive system can figure this one out so i'm in drive actually go to neutral let the vehicle settle now into drive we are stuck in the rollers i'm going to slowly accelerate put off the brake onto the gas almost no difficulty a great result [Music] i was very surprised when toyota launched this camry all-wheel drive because toyota is going an interesting route with many of their new vehicles a lot of the new toyota products use something called the toyota e-all-wheel drive system and what that means is that they're hybrids the front wheels are driven by the gasoline engine and some electric assist but then out back the rear wheels are driven only by an electric motor well that is not i repeat that is not how this new camry all-wheel drive works this is not a hybrid it's just a standard 2.5 liter gasoline 4-cylinder and then there's a mechanical linkage to the rear wheel so it's a much more old school than some of the toyota and lexus modern hybrid systems [Music] now for the diagonal slip test so the right rear wheel and the left front wheel are stuck in the rollers the other two are going to have to pull us off and this is very common in very snowy environments say you're going down a snowy street you turn off maybe up a little bit of a curb oftentimes the snow packs up around the curb those wheels don't have traction perhaps the right front and the left rear or vice versa the other two might have traction on perhaps the dried out surface that people have been driving on it's actually a pretty good test very common in the snow the roller test is interesting because not only does it test the all-wheel drive system and the traction control system it also tests suspension and articulation now in a perfect lab setting it'd be great to have all four wheels at the same height but the world isn't perfect when you're driving over snow certain areas are going to be higher certain areas are going to be lower so i'm not really all that concerned about it i actually kind of like that we have different wheels at different heights i'm in drive normal mode diagonal slip test i'm blending off the brake here a little bit of throttle all right the car's thinking about it traction pro light is blinking come on there we go oh so of course no locking differentials in this vehicle but the traction control was able to figure out where to send the power and we were able to glide off with a little bit of difficulty but i'm still doing pretty good [Music] we are stepping it up a couple of notches now so both rear wheels completely stuck in the rollers the left front wheel stuck in the rollers only the right front has traction the three wheel slip test this little engine doesn't have a lot of low end torque it doesn't have much torque at all actually but it is adequate for driving around town and you know in the mountains it just won't do it with the confidence of a sports car but it's a camry so in a neutral we're settled in a drive traction control on off the brake onto the throttle oh it's really trying come on figure it out figure it out oh very good so i definitely felt a lot of power go to that right front and we were able to drive off even with that really challenging test that was an impressive work of not only the all-wheel drive system which had less to do with that result because the rear wheels were totally sucked but an impressive result with the traction control which really grabbed onto that left front brake and sent power to the right front [Music] this camry is kind of rocking it it's doing so much better than the toyota hybrid all-wheel drive systems i'm actually really impressed now for the three wheeled slip test finale both front wheels the primary drive wheels are stuck as is the left rear only that rear right has traction so that wheel is uh is going to be important to watch but some other quick observations if you're buying this camry for snow driving all-wheel drive system seems to be working well but take a look at this really not a lot of ground clearance at all not a lot of space in this fender well um as well considering that we have these 19 inch wheels so i do i do see some issues in really snowy environments with snow building up not only the fender well but also getting high standard potentially so i wish they included a little bit more ground clearance this is the sporty xse one so it does have these cool side effects if you're looking at you know buying one of these for a really harsh environments maybe maybe skip the excess e it's difficult to make it to this point in the test at all the three wheeled slip test to accomplish even that first three wheel slip test is a major major success for toyota here but let's see if it can uh can do this most difficult of the tests only that rear wheel has traction the other three totally stuck including both fronts which are a big deal in a camry because it's primarily driven by the front end still but all right in a neutral foot off the brake we're settled in a drive accelerating gently oh it's trying to figure it out come on okay well we did make it off i think that uh i got enough wheels spin to the point where we slid off the rollers um i'll give it one more go but i think uh i don't think we're gonna do much better than that [Music] all right three wheel slip test take two if you're wondering why i'm putting my seat belt on it's so it doesn't beep and uh annoy you find folks from the audience the other great thing about this camera it's a real transmission not a cvt cvt is a real transmission of course too but this one has proper gears so it means that you've got a nice kind of engaged feeling as you drive up steep slopes or back on the rollers in the drive oh it's working it come on figure it out figure it out figure it out yeah i think we may have slipped again but i did feel power going to that right rear wheel that was impressive this is a good all-wheel drive system at least in this controlled environment i would love to bring it out into some snow but unfortunately we're having a very mild week here in december when toyota loaned us this vehicle so uh i don't think we're gonna have that real world test this time around [Music] all right well there you have it the new camry all-wheel drive a very interesting result for this toyota product now like i said toward the beginning of this video i actually like this mechanical linkage between the engine and the rear wheels more than toyota's e-all-wheel drive i find with the hybrid all-wheel drive systems that toyota uses in so many of their vehicles the rear wheels just don't have a lot of torque especially right off the bat whereas even with a relatively low horsepower engine that mechanical linkage means that when you accelerate you get pretty instant torque and traction to the rear wheels to push you off the obstacle or the snow or the ice or a little bit of sand that you may be stuck on well let me know what you think in the comments section below and as always this has been
