Can I Install New Shingles Over an Existing Roof? [Northern Virginia Roofing Tips]

hey everyone this is a question that we get all the time can I install a new roof over my existing shingles let me break down the answer to that right now I'm Andrew from whistle and we're your roofing specialists [Music] reroofing does allow you to install a new roof over an existing one but as you'll see there are a lot of considerations to take into account before you do something like that the first thing to consider is whether reroofing your roof is even possible first of all you need to consider whether you have asphalt shingles or not because reroofing can only happen when you have asphalt shingles second you need to take into account what your building area code is you need to comply with that third you need to consider what the manufacturer warranty is of your roofing products and make sure that you comply with those as well fourth you need to make sure that the weight of your roof can support a second roof on top of your existing roof and fifth you need to make sure that your homeowners association or HOA is okay with roof in your house if you do decide to reroute here are a couple key important aspects you need to consider you're going to want to check to see if the roof decks aren't damaged this is difficult to see without tearing the roof off but sometimes you can check from the Attic you want to make sure that all of the shingles on your roof are flat and that the roof is dry over time and with where shingles can curl up go missing and get damaged so you want to make sure that that's not the case with your roof before you decide to re roof you also want to make sure that all important parts of your roof such as a chimney a skylight or where anything needs a wall its flashed properly this is gonna tip eclis involve reflashing it which means taking a piece of aluminum that goes up from the shingles and meets that side surface whether it's a skylight or a chimney and that seals water off from getting underneath the shingles and helps keep your roof dry and finally you're going to want to make sure that the pipe flashing and the box vents are replaced before you decide to remove so after hearing all that if you do decide to risk having your roof re-roofed we're gonna give you a couple reasons why you should maybe think about not doing that you're not going to be able to tell how other components of Rufe are faring damage-wise without ripping everything up you can see and visually inspect the shingles and maybe the shingles won't be damaged but you don't know if layers underneath that such as the underlayment are damaged as well another really important key aspect and reasons why you should not wear a roof is because shingles are meant to be installed over a flat surface that's how they were designed and how they work properly circling back to warranty issues when you re roof you may not have the same warranty support as your original roofing products have building codes have also been updated in recent years and now require things like ice and water shield if your roof was installed 20-plus years ago and all likelihood it may not have these things that are required by building codes now and so if you go to reroute you're still not gonna meet the standards of today Murray roofing also may not look as good on an inspection report if you're planning to sell your house and finally Murray roofs are more prone to leaks and issues and there you have it these are just a few of the reasons why although reroofing may be possible we strongly advise against it again I'm Andrea whistle and thanks for listening [Music] you
