[Music] [Music] hello this is patrick with new jersey's outdoor adventures youtube channel here in bricktownship new jersey and i met up with jerry and jerry has a really cool custom camper van conversion he's going to give us a tour of today so join us hello jerry and welcome to new jersey outdoor adventures hi uh this is my uh 2017 ram promaster 2500 high top that i converted into a camper van uh before we get started i just want to show you some things that we did i used a one inch uh insulation here uh with a lvp floor vinyl floor on top of it we use the stair stepper uh guides here to keep it from chipping and we have the switches that are mounted right here for the shower and the uh the overhead led lights with dimmer control we'll take you right in come on in if you notice the first thing you notice when you come in is the shower um the shower's a tile shower uh can't use regular thin setting grout because of the van movement so we use a a very good adhesive and then we use a flexible grout caulk to seal all the uh the tile in place we use a frp uh fiberglass board for this that's water water repellent and the base is made out of plywood with um a fiberglass cloth and resin that i uh put together and then sealed it with flex seal and it does not leak i filled it up with water and let it sit for a day and no leaks i used a cedar uh rack here that i assembled and built to stand in had to level it off because of the pitch of the shower we have a toilet that's a cassette toilet comes apart it's it's basic accommodations and the nice thing about that is that you could take it apart and take the the bottom part and just dump it into any uh bathroom while you're on the road we have this regular uh shower curtain here so uh so the water stays inside we made a little box here for your shampoo and your uh conditioner we have an rv shower faucet and shower head all the promasters come with a shelf up here because of the head room and sitting here and we have the curtain that lines up here for privacy that you could uh really blast it out so while you're here at night you can close it up and no one knows you're here along with that i've i've made blackout blinds for the for the windows for the side window and then the back they stay secure with magnets and then the the cab area here we have a the standard seating with cup holders and so forth i installed a apple carplay here that connects to your phone behind the seating here is where i keep the diesel heater it's in that box that's right behind the driver's seat here it has a vent that comes out here and heats the whole cabin it runs on diesel fuel and we'll i'll show you where that tank is in the back when we get there we have a little storage here that we can put as you can see the uh this is a little extra and the reason why we put this here is because this with the swivel seat if you didn't have some place to put your feet they would dangle so you can see that you have a place for your feet you can enjoy the uh the company of whoever's in the back look up at the ceiling you'll see these are tongue and groove uh knotty pine boards and um i um i treated them before i put them up we have the ax max air fan vent here uh manual that will come on it has the rain guard on the top so you could actually raise the the lid while you're driving or while it's open and not being able to have to worry about rain coming in and then there's a lot of uh not straight it's not straight uh lines in in vans and so you have to tie things in and cut things a certain way we have to cover this we insulated the door all of the all the insulation uh on the walls and the doors are made with our with rock wool it's a one-inch foam board that's on the ceiling to be able to allow at least the wires to be able to move back and forth and these all have been screwed in on the the panels the front and the back um with quarter inch oak uh plywood uh we used a acacia wood butcher block top it gave it a nicer look i felt because the variation of color than just the standard uh butcher block top uh you had a little uh definition of the the colors and as you finish it it really makes those colors pop we have a refrigerator that's in here that acts as both a refrigerator or a freezer you can control the the settings by uh by the plus or the minus here has an eco setting also um if you take this off you can actually get to the uh cool it off quicker it these have 60 pound magnets here but still with the fridge being heavy it uh would still open so we used use this to to keep the door from opening a couple of drawers and they're tight also have magnets to hold them in place because as you're turning corners you'd be surprised how the the drawers will open on you inside here we have a in induction cooktop that plugs into the uh to the outlets on the counter there and the thing about induction is you need certain cookware cast iron uh frying pans and pots work just fine with that so you don't have to go out and buy special expensive uh cookware on that there's a cabinet here where we have access to unplugging the fridge when you're not using it so you're not drawing power when uh when you're not using the van over here we have the inverter access to turn it on to uh to have so the outlets are able to be in use and again you shut it off so you're not pulling draining power on the battery when you're not using it we have the victron gauge that tells you your battery and uh and if you're charging and what you have left on that on this side we have the sink i included a cutting board that fits inside the uh the sink itself we have the stopper it goes down there and uh the regular sink that'll come out to clean that [Music] we have we have four drawers also magnets all the manuals are here so check all of that we have the switch to uh to turn on and off the uh the water pump uh so again when it's not in use it's not uh pulling power we have a gauge that tells you how full the water tank is and underneath i have 20 gallon eight inch pvc uh water tanks for both the um gray water and the fresh water and then this is a switch to that controls the evacuation of the gray water tank that's a ball valve with that this controls the um the water tank for the air conditioner system that i'll talk about in a little bit that will actually fill it from the fresh water tank we have the controls for the diesel heater right here all you do is just put turn that on it'll start to uh come on it'll come on and take a few minutes to to warm up for the glow plugs to work and it starts blowing air immediately but then it slowly warms up which controls this and simple on and off we have a thermostat to tell us the temperature in here with that we have a shelf that will allow you to keep things here everything has a little ledge so things don't move around and fall down uh because you're moving around in the van we have cabinets here a couple of those here that'll allow you again with a ledge to store whatever you need to uh to put into here we have the outlets with the usb connections to be able to charge your phone on this side we also have cabinets that open that enable uh for storage here we have a little ledge either for a plant or whatever you you particularly need for that behind me over here is the um is the power station which allows us to have access to the circuit breakers and to the fuses that runs everything in that it also has a battery charger in here when we're hooked up to shore power when it's turned on above me here is a is a fresh air water water air conditioner there's no compressor it just runs simply on 12 volt you simply turn it on it pulls the water out of the tank runs through the system and it in an arid climate it drops the temperature 30 degrees up to 30 degrees more humid climates maybe 10 degrees most likely you'll be using this at night so even if it's humid out you'll you'll be able to be comfortable with sleeping especially with the other fan going on we have the lagoon table here that has all kinds of adjustments that you can control here for if you're doing work or you're have you have people here having a meal it simply just lifts off here this comes off and then we can make up our bed it's a queen-size bed it's 72 by by 60 and you can either put these in the middle here or pull the uh the big ones out and put those on the outside depending on how your your comfort level would be [Music] we have a box here that's a storage box uh that there's always room to be more storage this box will actually uh come out if you need it to it will sit on this end if need be depending on how you're sitting at the city at the table you simply put the table back together sliding this in the more you do it easier it gets and you can tighten these up so it doesn't move and the other thing is with this is you can while you're traveling just for more space back here you can just push it out of the way there's a raised platform here and that serves a couple of purposes one is that we are able to put a drawer which is a good size drawer for uh for storage here there's one on the back that we'll see when we open the back doors there's also a chase right in the middle of that so any water lines or electrical lines can run between them without without having any problems to open up to see the electrical end here so this is all the electrical here i have a 200 amp hour renergy battery a 2 000 watt renergy sine wave inverter that runs all the electrical which would be the the water heater the outlets it has the the solar control panel here we have 350 watt solar panels on the roof i have a relay box transfer relay box so when you're hooked up to shore power uh you don't have to use the the battery or the um the inverter it automatically switches that okay we have a kill switch here that shuts everything down uh that's on a 250 amp uh breaker we also have um a block here that runs the victron battery monitor if you look back here you'll see my water fill line comes in from the outside port with the vent and goes down into the tank on this side we have we have the water system this is a six gallon heat exchange water heater what that means is it has hoses that come from the engine that run antifreeze through the system that heats the hot water while the while the engine is running and it just constantly runs through that so it's always and then we have the electric backup with the breaker that you saw in the control panel the nice thing about this is that it allows you to heat that water while you're while you're driving and because there's so much power that that takes away from the battery to to run the the electric if that's all that you did you'll see the water pump here that comes up you'll see my drains all the pecs lines blue and red cold and hot that run that and then this is the the tank that stores the water for the fresh air air conditioner this is the fill line from the sink where that lever was that you saw earlier if you able to look over here you'll see where the uh the pump pulls water out of the tank up through lines into the unit and then comes back into for the top we're going to go around the back uh to see uh the the back of the van with the doors open and i can show you how that works back there again we have our box here come out [Music] and a drawer here 24 inch deep drawer for a lot of storage i always need a lot of storage this is the uh the fuel tank for the for the diesel heater i built it this way so you can actually take it out set it on the ground fill it at the the pump anything that spills will be on the ground out there if so happens and then simply just slip it back in here and we have a little window so you can kind of you see when you need to uh to fill it you have a little better view of the the fresh air fresh air uh air conditioner you have four vents you have its own light that it has there it has a setting to where um it'll tell you when you're low on water that you need to uh to fill the water tank and it has a its own just fan if you want to just use it as a vent and not and not run the air conditioner on the sides here this is where you hook up to shore power you plug into there and then the relay will automatically switch over and then the water fill to which you can just stick a hose in there which works out nice jerry thank you very much for taking the time to give our viewers a tour of your creation here can you tell our viewers a little bit more about why you chose that style air conditioning versus a standard rv air conditioner well the standard rv have a compressor and it uses so much more power this runs on a 12 volt system with a uh with a 20 20 amp fuse and essentially doesn't pull anything at all it just runs the fan and and the pump for the uh for the water and the systems designed uh primarily it was it's used in uh the the southwest for golf carts that even open golf carts they have it mounted on top of there and it'll drop in arrow temperatures up to 30 degrees uh to make it more comfortable for for golfers out there and then somewhere along the way somebody got the idea that these would be great in van builds and so they've been doing this for a little bit and uh i started to incorporate it uh for uh for my builds now what inspired you to start building vans what was uh the reason why you jumped into this my daughter and son-in-law built a van in october of of 2019 and they sold it made a profit and i thought wow i'm retired from from home improvements i can do this so last january i bought a 2008 sprinter van and just went to town just started to to learn as much as i can about the whole van builds and that living off the grid realize that there's a whole subculture of people that not only just are out there for weekends but actually live full time in vets and so i just continued to educate myself on all the systems that were involved i understood the carpentry end of it because of my home improvements but i did not understand the 12-volt system or or anything else but little by little i started to put that together this is my third van and i'm finished with this and i actually bought a fourth van that i'm that i started uh last week now the shower and the toilet and the refrigerator all these systems that rvs have and vans have coming from the home improvement industry was there a learning curve to start putting all this stuff in oh yeah yeah because you realize even with the uh the carpentry end of it when you build a kitchen everything's square and rectangular every has has everything in vans at least on the inside areas all curved and there's so many things there's girders and things that you can't really cut to make it fit you have to cut the wood uh to make that fit and so you you just experiment and you learn as you go uh each van i've incorporated some new things because i've learned as as i'm going and i finish one van i think you know my next fan i'm going to do it this way and then i and that keeps happening no matter how good i get it seems to be uh i keep i keep saying that my next fan i'm going to do something a little different did it simplify things going with an rv converter charger fuse breaker box oh completely completely it just saved on the wiring because everything was just up there i wanted it to be accessible i've seen some ones where people have all the switches in one place and everything and i thought if we could have all the breakers and everything in one place it would make it just and then the way this is set up is that if a fuse blows it lights up so you can see that because you when something goes just like at the house you have to wait for the breaker to pop but uh here the lights up and then you can see if you have to replace well that's a good tip i mean coming from the rv industry they've been doing this for a long time they figure things out and and maybe visiting an rv dealership and looking through their inventory and kind of get an idea what systems they use would help someone building their vans oh that would be a great idea and they would have to have some knowledge of what they want to do with a van build and then look at the uh the rvs and then just in their mind make those connections now did you design this floor plan yourself or is there like a set floor plan online that people have there there are there are certain ones a lot of a lot of vans have the fixed bed that are raised and uh but then you have to have certain seating away from that and so i thought if we did a bed with um seating that was lower and then it turns into a bed you have the rest of the space for cabinets and for storage jerry thanks again for taking the time today give us a tour of your beautiful creation well this is patrick with new jersey's outdoor adventures youtube channel hope you enjoyed this video please like this video comment share and subscribe i love it and we'll see you soon great thanks
