world holiday bowl and great offensive potential byu's aerial attack is a potent weapon that's always ready to explode the thrust of the cougars offense is a passing game engineered by sophomore quarterback ty detmer who leads the nation in passing efficiency wide receiver jeff franzen is part of an arsenal that includes running back matt bellini who's dangerous out of the backfield and a lethal tight end in chris smith outland trophy winner mohammed al-anibi gave detmer and his receivers time to break 11 ncaa records as lavell edwards's team finished 10-2 and won the whack bob davis leads a linebacking core that's rock solid with hard-hitting rocky beagle as one counterpart and chad robinson is another the cougars are psyched for their festive eighth trip to the holiday bowl penn state stands in the way and the lions enter their first holiday bowl with a message diego prepared and equipped to stop byu with a stinsy defense led by butkus award finalist andre collins who had 130 tackles this season the defense ranked fourth in the nation allowing under 12 points a game with mark dinafrio leading the sac charge and causing fits for quarterbacks like major harris joe paterno has relied on a healthy supply of running backs over the years and this season is no exception blair thomas who successfully recovered from knee surgery fulfilled his college dreams this year with over 1300 yards rushing and he finished strong with six straight 100 yard games tony sacca took over at quarterback when tom bill was suspended and helped lead the lions to another lambert trophy to beat byu saka's offense will probably have to produce plenty of points if he sputters get ready to see tom bill it's the best of the east against the best of the west next [Music] a hearty hello and welcome to the 12th annual sea world holiday bowl and tonight's game as a perennial power from the wac conference byu against the lambert trophy beast of the east penn state this young sophomore can throw it and on the other side this old veteran can run it tim blair thomas is one of the many great tailbacks amazing record between them they represent between the two of them 42 years of head coaching experience they have compiled together almost 400 victories 33 career bowl appearances and three national championships this time byu was here in the holiday bowl what a tremendous courage he had here in the first half robin you left the game in the first quarter with a lot of pain and a knee injury an ankle injury you hobbled back on the field through two touchdown passes led your team and a come-from-behind win not only for the holiday bowl but to keep that record perfect and win the national title so this bowl has to have pretty special meaning for you it really does you know it brings back great memories it was a great win for our team and the university we wore a helmet tonight he'll wear a headset but he's hoping the results will be the same a win for byu timmy all right and the champ we are penn state comes to san diego and their friends from provo hope to be unfriendly here are the cougars of byu [Applause] you see the strange alignment that penn state starts their kicking game from they begin in a huddle and then break and they make the defense concern themselves about the possibility of both that pooch and or the onside kick nothing strange just your basic football with the opening kickoff coming deep to mortensen he starts a yard deep in the end zone down at the 16-yard line and that's where the cougars take over first and ten tag detmer will be at quarterback backing him up matt bellini and fred winningham the running backs the wide receivers they'll use six of them nyberg and voice of the starters the tight end is chris smith and up front robert stevens is the center flanked by the guards brian may and mount muhammad muhammad al-awini will wear 79 rather than 64 tonight mike tyme and neil fort are the tackles some problems with his usual jerseys so muhammad alowanibi will be wearing number 79 for lavell edwards here in this holiday bowl game first and 10. [Applause] [Music] [Applause] and it's the out pattern complete that strands it jeff franzen out to the 43-yard line back in this byu offense [Applause] quick drop and the pass complete to nyberg and brent nyberg has yet another cougar first down looking for nyberg he's got it touchdown byu a marker down back at the 44-yard line so hold on our referee ineligible receiver down field offense [Applause] number 17 andy boyce now in the game at the top of your screen and he'll pick this one up near the 40-yard line five receivers out and he dumps it for nyberg he may have heard footsteps and patterns of byu with their big hits third and four it's the out pattern again complete number 88 in byu byu has committed far more you can scramble and he finds bellini matt bellini down and a bundle now for the cougars they come with a blitz and he dumps it to bellini sherrod range will usher him out of bounds and chaffetz and they don't try the punt to pin penn state back looking for friends and incomplete elias sackett quarterback and who else claire thomas with his first carry already he picks up eight yard drive out of the split backs saka looks to throw it's caught by daniels for the first down leroy thompson gets by robinson and cuts back there he runs into bob davis on second and five blair thomas cuts it back inside for another first down the delay draw to thomas and ferguson comes up to meet him the question is did blair carry him [Applause] thomas appears to have the first down or he gets thomas in your backfield why not he gets it again [Applause] and i think he got six it'll be a 31-yard try for tarasi it's been an outstanding tent byu corley on the pitch stacy corley [Applause] for they fake byu bellini they pick up the blitz and it's complete to smith the tight end out to the fourth first and ten from the 41. boy detmer has been right on target this is his first scramble opportunity and it's for a first down first and ten you see the time remaining in the first quarter whittingham whittingham down to the 36th first and ten with the ball at the 36 of penn state stacy corley intercepted by sherrod range penn state's got it at their own 18. that one may be picked off crutchfield i thought it had plenty of stuff on it but watch crutchfield come right in front of daniels and make this interception back it even hit his knee as he killed number 24 of the cornerback one setback it's corley and detmer delivers [Applause] and whittingham gets it out whittingham he has over 600 yards rushing and he's down to near the 20-yard lines and in motion winning him again while they did stop it they did he runs the 4-7-40 which is pretty fast for a nose guard here comes the blitz gary brown coming denmark gets away caught first down at the one andy voice to stay there he kept rolling out now watch him throw off balance watch the touch boy he pays the price right here because andre collins pops him but watch the touch on that ball and watch where it lands and they boyce will catch the football you can't you can't leave your receiver like henderson did then first down from the one corley he may have fumbled it he may have fumbled it but it appears that byu has it at the three-yard line this is what they do coralie and you're right i don't think ditma really did a very good job of putting the ball in there he wouldn't do it [Applause] it's a play faith and the man was there but it's incomplete fotu katoa [Applause] play fake to corley detmer again now no it's incomplete this year he much like tarasi an outstanding season this is a sharp angle a 20-yard try and it's good e-line dragged it a little bit well he had to hook it it wasn't pretty but it counts for three chaffetz and company have tied this one at three in san diego touchdown this one very short and being taken by an up back and look at him go jeff anderson an inside linebacker down to the 38-yard line at 27-yard return something penn state does not like saca one of four so far mcduffie first down nittany lions and in three with terry smith in motion to smith and he made the catch mcduffie in motion ah they come back with o.j misdirection from paterno and he's out of bounds at the 25-yard line so joe is an excellent football player look at here max smith touchdown penn state zaka looked out saw smith by himself the quarterback was way in the cornerback didn't even go out with the receiver and that was mitchell who was playing almost in a strong he missed it for the field as their inspiration falcon will stand beside the field with his walker and try to walk now a few weeks ago when coffin was married it was chris smith who actually carried his brother down the aisle and helped him kneel to make the vow bellini in motion and matt fellini makes the grab about a yard shy of the first down detmer with a pump fake and another pump fake plenty of time and smith makes the grab on third and nine detmer looks to the corner to nyberg it's rule to completion first and ten corley on the pitch and he's got room but look at penn state converge down to the 32-yard line and he can see some playing time tonight third and three detmer for nyberg brant nyberg look out range has him inside the penn state team they're on hand for all the byu games first and nine from the nine detmer to smith and they don't rule it a touch [Applause] poorly he does not get in third and goal probably go with a quarterback snake here yes that's what they wanted to do but they didn't get it off time out called by penn state crunch one in from a yard away and now detmer may be calling a timeout he is wendell shelton out of the southwest conference i don't believe lavelle really believed the timeout had been called he said he came they advertised it oh let's go play look at roger french he's heard those conversations before 18 years an assistant under lavell edwards san diego's jack murphy stadium this side sold out again for this matchup of the east and the west 12th play of the drive again third and goal from the one play fake detmer touchdown well it's a half an inch and probably for byu great fake by detona as he comes out scoreless and he scores because of the great fake with four completions and eight tries now back on the field leroy thompson his second carry of the game loves coaching this sophomore well he's a very outspoken youngster and i'm sure the coaching staff had a lot to do with him being quiet and the pass over the middle from sac to mcduffie good for a first second down and eight for penn state counter play and another first down for blair thomas first and ten thompson leroy thompson down to the 25. this kind of business second and 17. saca looking for daniels and running out of time and bob davis is there approach to the game as a quarterback third and goal from deep and down to the 19-yard line a 36-yard try markowitz to hold and it's good sunny okay you got to be awfully proud of this young man yes sir this is the nicest tie i've ever gotten for christmas he has matured so much as a quarterback over the past couple years here at byu yes sir he's had an outstanding year this year but you know it comes over a little process of playing and going through that freshman year and you got to learn a lot when you go to college it's awful tough for a freshman to play and and as a sophomore i'm really proud of what he's done this year he had some pretty good coaching in high school here from dan of course and uh from mission texas another pretty good coaching mission texas [Applause] with dr punch detmer with a pump fake look at him get away from the traffic look at the patience fellini's open and winning ham is as well out of bounds could not get the foot inbounds but unfailing ability and finally says get on down there and he throws it back across his body just a little bit outside smith the tight end and another first down so she has a tight end it's obvious they're missing dinafrio in that pass rush detmer to bellini 41 seconds left in the first half defmer dumps it whittingham has it down to the four yard line shy of the first down look at that 11 ncaa records this season those are the four major ones there are seven others all of those records by the way all 11 of them belong to jim mcmahon look look here [Applause] 22 yards knocks it through down to a field goal late in the game kaufman will kick off and mcduffie has it at the 13. wow a huge hit by alema he absolutely threw his body went flying up in the air let's see him right wow look at that missy time i know my goodness what a shot airborne from the 22-yard line but by the way out of american samoa boy he came all that was a hit right from samoa right from the island yeah i'm watching coach coach seconds remaining in the half time for one play [Applause] thomas stop that near the line of scrimmage and then look at him fight for another three maybe four yards craig patterson made the stop and that'll do it we've come to the end of the first half here at the sea world holiday bowling san diego 13-12 the cougars of byu leading the pitney lions of penn state mcduffie at his three o.j mcduffie out to the 49-yard line a punt return for a touchdown against syracuse and now the nittany lions with fine field position first half statistics show that byu in the air 245 yards penn state on the ground more than doubling byu no punts in the game so far yet only 13 to 12 to score living up to the billing here in the holiday bowl thomas again cutting back inside as he does so well down to the byu 40 underway third quarter byu with a one point lead and on second and four blair thomas gets four and more down to the thirty nine ten thompson by blair thomas can block two kenny look at him take chad robinson right out of the play for the moment and marco which to hold again it's true but is it long enough it is whittingham the lone setback play fake to him and detmer's in trouble finds smith and he drops it pressure detmer gets away and he gets out of bounds 10. blair thomas penetrating byu 57 on the left side protecting saka quick drop and dave jacobs has it jacob had the critic thomas oh nice cut back to the 16-yard line blair thomas tackle he's all over the field the line back of the byu and on first down thompson now outside leroy thompson scores touchdown it's 22-13 penn state with a lead over b.y.u 9 38 remaining blair thomas starts it but leroy thompson finishes up and penn state football power we'll talk about that when we get an opportunity detmer dumps it to winning hand past the 40 to the 44-yard line andre collins made the stop and quickly the flag it's the draw to whittingham brian chismar made the stop it's complete to franzen down at the 23-yard line it's our speculation second and ten friends in first down byu in the arms of brian chile and rush it's hard to get much pressure [Applause] whittingham fumbles it but he's on top of it at the 13-yard line who means so much in your pass rushing game that they're having problems there and they have to keep as many people as they can back to protect against the pass in the secondary they do need to get more pressure on them though don't they well they do they've got to keep mixing it up trying to find what the best way to go three-man rush four-man rush four man of the same size and there's the not field they could use him the leading sacker with eleven but he's been hurt second and thirteen detmer [Applause] [Music] another fantastic catch conference is on him good how could you cover him any better what an unbelievable catch and look where he puts the ball just about the only place you can put the ball in that kind of a situation three backs and winning ham in motion whoa look play fake same result as a sneak person [Applause] has his extra point he blocked it too low entirely too low he hit it about in the middle didn't get any height on it within one field goal of a tie i beg your pardon yes again comes out with a naked he's putting the pressure trying to throw the ball but watch this move on willie thomas who's in great position to make the tackle stops and slips back inside for the touchdown what a play the youngster from san antonio has put on a show [Applause] there goes blair again he has six he has seven and more out to the 43-yard line of b.y.u third and six [Applause] wayne johnson is blitzing and saka is running to mcduffie [Applause] mitchell knocked it away [Applause] in that backfield and they have him whoa look at him out to tyson thomas down to the 31-yard line for a first down penn state here we go again smith nice touch on the pass to tyson thomas for conor back who was flanked out penn state excuse me on first and ten thompson that the byu defense is getting tired and that's what this running game is all about there's davis for instance the overran is a missed tackle by crutchfield number 24 in the secondary and leroy thompson looks fresh but then penn state comes right back and pounds it right in their face have a tendency to go to the big ten or to the eastern schools the up back picks it up scott charlton for byu and they've got good feedback andy boyce in motion fade pattern for nyberg he's got it at the 40-yard line of penn state 23 of 34 316 yards one interception i asked him if he had had a better half than the first half we saw against washington state back in september he said no he said really i haven't had a great two halves in one game all year that i'm a player that's broken 11 ncaa records this year he might have it tonight the way he's going winningham with a big hole down to the 30-yard line willie i'm defensive coordinator to joe paterno stacy corley stacy corley keeps the motor running receivers detmer goes in his direction to bellini underneath down to the 13-yard line this game has been a sellout since november and then when penn state was picked as the entrant it even grew larger detmer for boys touchdown [Applause] opens the fourth quarter to thomas and what a buttonhook blair thomas he made a very classy way i might add big play again on third down the blitz is on he got away from robinson and he found thomas tony sacca with savvy finds thomas for first and goal from the seventh thomas touchdown that's all it takes for blair thomas bad hold markowitz boy look at markowitz he had a chance didn't he bob davis finally hauled him down on the extra point they still have the lead though [Applause] denver with the play fake and andy boyce is open he looks to the other side and wants help from winningham and he's got him at the 47-yard line center with tom mees and chris over the middle to franzen first down at the penn state dedmer finally is sacked woodmers completed nine of his last 10 passes out of bounds at the 40-yard line the second interception of detmer tonight defensive play of the night take over thomas claire thomas who really got back to being the old player thomas first half of the year they got all they could out of him but he wasn't 100. mcduffie daniel touchdown dave daniels with a remarkable lynn swann catch [Applause] all year and we've seen a lot of games big big play here it is right here you can see the ball crutchfield in good position but watch the concentration as he goes down continues to concentrate and then what a what a play they're going for two incomplete intended for mcduffie so it's still a 15 point game with 9 28 remaining and byu can certainly score more points but the problem is they haven't stopped penn state yet 41-26 our score more college football the mazda gators tigers detmer still with time or bellini and he's got it at the penn state 40-yard line [Applause] nine minutes plus remaining in san diego quick out pattern a huge hit by chismar two plays look here they're down to the 22-yard line again same pattern and humphreys hits him this time oh you're not going to see 45. whittingham touchdown cougars just don't stop do they three plays they're one score and a two-point conversion away from tying the game swing it out to thompson thompson crawling to the 47-yard line who would think penn state would be scoring this many points thompson cuts through past midfield davis finally gets thompson behind the line of scrimmage and rocky beagle he delivers first down nittany lions staying to the end because it always comes down to the last play of the last drive in this bowl game tyson thomas chasing down a 36-yard strike short of last year's blowout and the barry sanders exhibition every game in the holiday bowl of the decade of the 80s has been like this [Music] getting a workout along the sidelines watching their collective offenses somebody moved in we got a flag look at this guy finally berger holds him down along with tony madison the game a touchdown and a two-point conversion is what byu must have he dumps it to the secondary receiver voice from the 27 first and ten smith first down [Applause] [Music] [Applause] at the 17-yard line todd berger can't believe it frank collins made the stop [Applause] detmer knocks the way the marker down brown gary brown is guilty [Applause] white smith bounce off bounce off of brown knocks him off which is okay here i don't know i think there was contact prior to that now that may not have been it but the contact made earlier that you feel smith initiated smith initiated that that wasn't part of it the officials felt the other way the ball was in the air in the air gibbons incomplete now they've given him a chance and he may aggravate that pull second and three from the three touchdowns you're behind by two you go for two no question about it roger french and lavelle edwards talked with detmer now the execution becomes the critical [Applause] factor intercepted by collins andre collins this could go this is the new college rule we've seen it all at the sea world holiday bowl down but they're not out penn state by four timeout part of the sea world holiday bowl on second and eight to montgomery of reverse and davis big bob was not fooled they're backing man again which means they're blitzing coming after him oh he's going after it is in trouble and he's down the clock right now elkowski with a nice boot nice kick sending mitchell back to his 10. and he slides down at the 12-yard line so now they go rush with about three or four at the most and dinafrio will be one of them number 38. complete and out of bounds at the 26-yard line 40 remaining no timeouts left bellini stopped at the 39 and pushed back andre collins makes the hit it means chaffetz cannot be a factor they need a touchdown smith first down byu at the penn state 46. the clock stops as the chains move and it restarts out pattern to voice [Applause] smith incomplete knocked away by charade range he had [Applause] gary brown reveals it gary brown steals it and penn state will win it finally rest more comfortably in san diego 50 to 39 hours not this way you win them anyway me it doesn't make any difference but i know what you're talking about but you're happy to win it i'm happy for joe but i'm also sad for laval because two great coaches two fine gentlemen in every respect and i've been in both situations i've been in that situation when you lose and it hurts and it's going to hurt for a good while and i've been in the other situation football campaign comes to an end on espn this year and it has been thrilling as always fellini underneath out to the 40-yard line again the clock cannot be barbara by the way is the acting athletic director in atlanta well coach dooley's with us look still still completing them as a clock runs down be back they're the lamborghini champions they're headed to the big ten in the future and joe paterno still winning games and that's it and it ends on the second sack of the game for penn state todd berger gets it and that'll do it joe paterno's penn state nittany lions close out the year eight three and one with the victory tonight over a byu team that proudly represented the up-and-coming white conference goes right to ty ditmar and that's where he wants to go into lavell and he even though you're happy you still have that feeling for a friend that you know how he feels and his great compassion students in the coaching industry it's been my honor to work with yet another legend
