what's up guys tim little matt allen welcome back to tactical bastion today we have another buyer's guide for you today we are talking chatter baits and spinner baits we got our favorite baits trailers and gear let's go [Music] spinnerbaits and chatterbaits each honestly deserve their own buyer's guide each one of these is a giant category a major placeholder in bass fishing but with these buyer's guides it's crunch time to get this information to you guys that's why when buyer's guides kicked off we were going a full blown seven days a week just trying to get them in for you so we've combined these two categories tim will talk well really we'll both talk chatterbaits and spinnerbaits but tim's going to get us started talking chatterbaits because he's got this passion for chatterbaits a lot of time when we go out together he'll throw a chatterbait i'll throw a spinnerbait as we find our bites and then we jump in to one or the other because they fish in similar situations but on one day one is firing and the other's not and vice versa yeah chatter baits or bladed jigs have been around for many many years now and they've caught tons of big fish the reason i like throwing a chatter bait versus you know every bait has its time in its place right but every angler has their confidence bait and they lean on the history of catches and and such and a bladed jig or a chatterbait i mean throwing around grass around structure hopping on the bottom fishing it like a lipless there's just so many different ways to fish it but big fish eat chatter baits so i'm gonna start it off uh and i guess one of the main reasons i really like throwing a chatterbait is you always feel really connected with the bait you always feel that vibration that big thump you you know what your bait's doing when it stops uh thumping you you pop it through that grass and then dawn and it's just so much fun you're just connected to that bait all the time it's a lot like burning a a lipless crankbait if you will so you're always feeling that that vibration i'm gonna kick it off with talking about the jackhammer and why not i mean that is the number one uh bladed jig or chatterbait on the market you know evergreen and z-man partnered up and created like the almighty chatter bait on the market right uh so many terms has been one so many big fish have been caught but it's just when you're shopping for a chatterbait or you're going through the different brands and there's so many different models on the market you want something you want a bait that when you fire it out there and you get that first half handle turn you want that blade to start kicking you don't want to take three or four or five or six handle turns for that blade or that bait to start working because you've you've missed a lot of opportunity a lot of of ground you you could have fished properly but you didn't because the bait wasn't working correctly so you don't have to worry about that and that's what you're paying for you know you're paying for a good hook good vibration and a bait that works and they are a little bit more pricey but if the money's on the line or you're out fun fishing and you're wanting to catch fish all my confidence is in the jackhammer and we'll talk about some other uh baits that work very well but the jackhammer again you don't have to worry about that blade not working comes in great colors some of them if you can get them i know some of them are sold out over like always sold out but we'll link just like every video we'll link all of our favorite colors and trailers down below in the video description but the jackhammer you guys that i paired that up that is the zako by uh yamamoto i pretty much have three or four trailers that are are on my baits 100 of the time you know the zako it's a it's a swimbait profile it's got a little swim bait tail on it it's got a little vertical wedge on it real subtle action it's got a kind of a riveted body so you got a real a lot of kick in the mid section so if you're looking for something has a lot of action the midsection that bait or that trailer works really well another one is going to be a keitech you know we've talked about in previous videos rigging the kei tech upside down take your favorite swimbait and rig it upside down it has a little bit better action upside down and really gets that secondary action with the with the the skirt and the whole bait working together as one bait to really look realistic but uh before i talk about all the the trailers let me talk about this guy right here this is the stealth blade so i already talked about the jackhammer this is the jackhammer this is the stealth blade and it's something that we talked about earlier on this year that came out sometime this year i believe i think early this spring it came out but it's a bait that when they came out with it everybody was like duh you know this should have been out a long time ago what they did they took a clear blade hopefully you guys can see that and it's more of a finesse chatter bait if you will it has a little bit different vibration it's not as aggressive it does start real quickly on your first rod twitch or your handle turn uh but it's a real tighter action uh from what i've experienced i don't know if you've got to play around with this much yeah no i think you're exactly spot on it is literally a finesse chatter bait right it's still vibration but it doesn't it doesn't give you that like raw beating that you get out of an actual chatter rate it's somewhere between there and a swim jig right so the stealth blade is a another uh bait that works really well in pressured waters in clear waters you know a lot of times you're fishing this up shallow in grass around structure so if you've got a lot of visibility or clear water i should say try that guy right there i'm going to finish up and talk about the baits i know you got another chatterbait you want to talk about the last two baits i want to talk about real quick before matt talks about the the other chatter bait this guy right here this is the hog farmer spunk shad and we really learned about this bait when we were doing the underwater testing and this thing is awesome i mean it it's probably our number one trailer now it yeah everybody throws a swimbait on a on a chatterbait and this thing has just a lot different action it looks super good but if you guys have not tried the spunk chat on a chatterbait or a swim jig they work awesome and if you're looking for something that's more like a creature bait or something that has a lot of kind of appendages moving this is the cowboy by yamamoto got two big kickers two little arms on the side you can rig this vertically or horizontally totally up to you but that is another great trailer on a chatterbait yeah that yamamoto that thing is massive when it's in the water those arms stick out so far and their kick is so big if you want that like slow rolling on the bottom creature bait look that big profile to get a big bite that thing rocks so the last one i want to add into the mix tim's already nailed it i mean if you're going to throw a chatter bait and you can afford it you buy a jackhammer that's it is completely swamped chatterbait fishing right there there are so many styles of baits there are so many brands jumping into it but they've got it locked up because that jackhammer you throw it out there you engage that handle and it's kicking right right then and there and so many people that have tried to get around patents or find another way to make one work you throw that thing out there and you start reeling and nothing's happened you gotta like shake that rod tip to get that thing started and you're already three or four feet away from your target that's what that extra money is it's getting that consistency every single time solid components now that said for the guy that just can't swing a jackhammer they're not cheap the best thing that we have found is still actual chatterbait brand and it's the custom the chatterbait custom is going to give you really really good colors a really nice hook a major major upgrade from the original bait it's got a solid solid hook and it fishes really well it is not a jackhammer but it's still way above everything else and then again that spunk shad is just awesome i really really like that spunk shad because it perfectly matches the speed of the blade some trailers you'll get the ch the blade going one speed and the trailer is totally different they just don't look right these pair so well together all right now that we've talked about chatter baits let's talk about spinner baits because this is kind of a one-two punch video so i'm gonna go i'm going to talk about two if that's all right and then i'll have you kind of round it up okay my two favorite spinner baits are these guys right here this is the river to see bling and the revenge double willow spinner bait now let's talk about the bling this is a really light wire spinner bait this came out several years ago and a lot i mean it's got paper thin blades this thing is awesome for spotted bass fisheries smallmouth fisheries but a real light wire so you can get real aggressive with this bait and give it some rod twitches and really get those bait those blades moving get that thing pulsating and pumping but the river to see bling is probably my number one spinner bait if i want to throw something that has a little bit more a little bit heavier wire um actually i haven't want to add another one in here because this comes in a heavy wire but this is the revenge double willow again beautiful beautiful spinnerbait revenge makes some awesome awesome baits but uh this guy right here in the heavy version we used to fish a lot at clear lake right through the heavy stuff just like you would a heavy swim jig a lot of times at night and again multiple double digits caught on a spinner bait at night and another trick don't always have to throw a big colorado blade at night those big willow blades work very well at night just like they do during the day but these two spinner baits the revenge and the river to see if you guys are getting into uh spinnerbait fishing these two right here are must-haves again oh this is almost like a finesse spinnerbait i mean you can catch almost like the crossover between you can catch giant and we have caught giant large mouth on this guy right here but it's it's a lot lighter lighter wire real thin blades hopefully you guys can see that just paper but paper thin and a lot of action so you can get away with throwing these on your favorite jig rod it doesn't have to be a super stout rod unless you're going with the heavy then up size your gear and we'll talk about that here in a sec but these two guys right here are winners now those are both full size spinner baits if you will that that standard full profile full-size blades i'm going to go the other direction and this is something that i do with spinnerbaits a lot so i have three more for you spinnerbaiting is something that i just love doing the the way that tim will just reach to that chatter bait when we get to that same situation i reach to the spinnerbait there's a time and a place for a full size and there's a time to downsize if you need to get bit if they're chasing smaller bait fish if the water's clearer you go to those smaller profiled spinner baits but here's the trick you don't necessarily go to lighter weight spinner baits our standard size spinner bait is a half ounce we'll throw 3 8 sometimes we'll throw three quarters sometimes but standard weight is a half ounce and that doesn't necessarily change when i go down to these guys with little tiny blades like here as an example let me see that revenge the spinner baits themselves same basic size but look at the difference between the largest blades on these two night and day different right so there's a reason for that the reason that i like to do that is one it's a little finessier those fish just seem to eat it more often in in varying conditions i know that i can pick that up and i'll get bit more frequently but the biggest difference is that i can go faster much like we like to speed crank i also like to speed fish a spinner bait so if you're slow rolling you know that revenge double willow you just roll that thing and that big old thing is just thumping and they just come and eat that thing but sometimes especially that clearer water you just want to you just want to go little rod pump he mentioned with the with the uh with the bling with those paper thin blades it's almost like that jackhammer where they just start up immediately so you can pump it you can work it and they'll flare and flash and they come right back in they don't get all screwed up so same thing with these little guys so three of them no particular order here this is a mega bass v9 little tiny blades tiny hook really small hook so you can take that guy and you can drop down 10 12 pound line no issue i mean you can go lighter than that except you don't want to risk breaking off your mega mass spinner rate but you could set that hook with eight pound so you can drop down speed that sucker up really fish it aggressively now one thing there's no keeper on here so you want to glue a trailer onto this one and i'm glad i said trailers i'm gonna come to that in just a second but that's the first one second one this is a dimiki and we'll link the exact chatterbaits the exact spinnerbaits trailers favorite colors everything down in the video description so don't worry about that but the damiki is just a little bit bigger all the way around slightly larger blade but still way smaller than a full profile slightly larger hook but still way smaller than a full profile okay so it's just more of an in-betweener but i've really enjoyed that one as well the big thing for all three of these for me is the shad spawn in the springtime this is my favorite time to do this the shed early in the morning to get up shallow those bass are up there eating them and you can just burn and just cover water and those smaller blades going really fast do a fantastic job of getting those fish to just come out and react last one this is a war eagle now war eagle makes a full size just like a revenge and it's also a great spinner bait but for me when i turn to a war eagle i turn to what's called the screamin eagle which again tiny little down-sized willow blades so i can speed that thing up the thing about the war eagle is it has more of an o'shaughnessy style hook but it's a heavy wire hook so this is i'm on big fish i still want to get those big bites but they're just a little they're just a little funny they won't eat my regular spinnerbait i go to that screaming eagle i can speed that thing up i'm a smaller profile overall but when i stick them i'm sticking them on a really meaty hook so that's the difference between these three the mega bass is that lightest wire that the miki's in between and that war eagle is that heavier wire option but all downsized now for trailers i keep it really really simple night fishing i always joke my favorite trailer when i night fish is a 6-0 hook and that's it's sort of true there's no reason not to throw a great big stinger hook on when you're night fishing because at night those fish are coming up for the vibration so they are going to come up and they're going to eat those blades you if you pay attention some spinner baits that back blade is up here some it's way down like this if i was throwing this in the dark that fish is coming they're getting that blade they're not getting that hook other baits just sit differently that one's kind of in between there's one where it's clear halfway up that thing they're way more likely to get the hook on that one so if you add a trailer to any nighttime spin rate a trailer hook they're just more likely when they come up to get a mouthful to get that hook in the daytime on the opposite i don't throw trailer hooks if you want to if you still want that in between you can use something like a zoom a little split tail where you've got that two different tails and they just ride in there behind that bait but you can throw a small trailer hook on top of that and it will ride above that trailer and not mess anything up but because we typically don't use trailer hooks in the daylight my number one trailer is a keitech we rig them right side up and it's a very specific size for the tiny spinner baits i use a 3.8 for the full size you use a 4.3 and there's a reason for that i do not use a 4.8 a 4.8 is just long enough that when that thing's sailing through the air and that trailer is flapping in the wind on its way out on the cast that hook or that tail will come around and catch that hook point and you foul i don't know 10 of your cast maybe it's probably less than that but a 4.3 is just short enough that that problem is almost completely eliminated i'll foul up on my hook every once in a blue moon it just makes the actual fishing that much smoother so use a keitech as a trailer in the daylight to really get a full profile on that bait when you've got a swim bait on the back of a spinnerbait they come in for flash they come in for vibration they come in for profile but when they get there they eat the swim bait and you'll get them every time and you do not need a trailer hook whatsoever but again a 3.8 for the little guys and a 4.3 for the full profiles will make your life so much easier again the each of these baits have a time in the place matt talked about the shad spawn you're getting that extra flash you're kind of mimicking a school of bait chatter bait you're getting that vibration they can sense it stained water they can feel it a lot farther so they each have a time of the place time and a place and we each have our own confidence baits but hopefully that kind of simplified chatter baits and spinner baits real quick let's talk about um gear as far as a chatterbait or bladed jig i like to throw a glass rod the x-pride the 7-2 glass is an awesome awesome rod the benefit of a glass rod it's a lot slower action it's a lot more whippy so when you rip that bait through out through grass kind of it kind of slingshots it out it kind of if if you can follow me it kind of loads up and then pops out and that that that last pop when it pops out of the grass that's what gets those fish to trigger as that bait speeds up and shoots off so a glass rod uh it's also fun to fish too because it's like it loads up deep into the rod but that x pride is a great rod as far as spinner baits you can get away with your favorite jig rod you know you don't have to be real rod specific for a spinner bait what's your what's your favorite well so for bigger spinner baits definitely any of my jig rods literally the same rod i would throw a jig on i can cut it off put a full-size spinner bait on and go for a downsized spinnerbait you want to go to a finessier rod if you want to crossover i sound like a broken record through this entire buyer's guide but those loomis mbrs the exact same rods an 843 844 that 844 in particular will let you throw all your spinner baits but that's just a rod where if you set the hook on that smaller hook you just don't hit them as hard and if you're setting the hook on a full size you just freight train them but it'll work for all of them it loads up well and it keeps those fish pinned yeah and and going back to the chatter baits as well you can throw any of your favorite four power or heavy light heavy action rod and get away with with throwing a chatter bait you're going to feel that vibration so you don't need a very sensitive rod but um both of these techniques are great ways to catch a lot of fish and big fish so to wrap it up one other thing we've been standing here for like weeks wearing tactical apparel but we're like our own worst sales people because sales is just not what we do we're just tackle junkies so guys you should be aware all of our apparel is now available on tackle warehouse we kind of got out of the middle because if you tried to buy apparel from us you know it was a disaster right it would take us forever to respond we're just so busy out there actually fishing we're terrible about getting behind the computer so now it's all through tackle warehouse new hats are finally back sun shirts you know i've i've been struggling with some some cancer things lately skin cancer uh more on that to come but you need to cover up so sun gear this time of year hoodies but it's all there if you want that going into the holidays going into the cold season uh but i think we'll wrap it up there hopefully this helps you guys again we will link all of it for you in the video description drop that menu down it'll open up and we'll break these out by category to make it really simple for you because we know we covered a lot of baits but we'll really dial it in so you can find exactly what you're looking for and our
